Inside Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s controversial marriage… and how it survived ‘grooming claims’ and vile stepdaughter slurs

SHE’S been labelled a “cradle-snatcher”, “sexual deviant” and even a “groomer” – while he has been accused of having “complex mother issues”.

Yet stepping out on the red carpet in London earlier this week for the world premiere of his new film 28 Years Later, Sam and Aaron Taylor-Johnson looked unfazed by the furore that’s forever stalked their relationship.

From where they’re standing, they’ve proved the critics wrong.

Tomorrow marks their 13th wedding anniversary, after all – an impressive feat by Hollywood standards.

But it’s even more startling considering the never-ending noise surrounding their age-gap romance, and its very unconventional beginning.

They first met in 2008, when Aaron, then just 18, was cast in the role of a teenage John Lennon in Sam’s directorial debut Nowhere Boy.

Filmmaker and double cancer survivor Sam was 41, more than double his age, and had two daughters with her ex-husband, the art dealer Jay Jopling – to whom she was married for 11 years before they “amicably” split in 2008.

While seemingly worlds apart, the pair connected and reportedly got together upon completing their film

As Sam told Harper’s Bazaar in 2019, “We were very professional through the entire film… But everyone on set knew.

“And as soon as we finished, he told me he was going to marry me. We had never been on a date, or even kissed.”

She was quick to stress the fact that he pursued her, seemingly trying – and failing – to squash the “granny groomer” accusations swiftly lobbed in her direction.

Filming concluded in March and, by June – when Aaron turned 19 – they were stepping out together on date nights.

Neither confirmed a romance, but the PDAs did the talking.

By their film’s premiere in October 2009 they were officially a couple.

Walking the red carpet arm-in-arm – Sam in a glitzy gold dress and Aaron in a tux – they started as they meant to go on: loud and unapologetic.

Needless to say, the reaction was deafening.

Comments from the time included: “She looks like his mum!” and “How can she do this to him? He’s only a child who barely knows his own mind yet.”

Double standards

Some were also quick to point out that any positive reactions would have been very different were things the other way around.

Sam wasn’t just more than two decades older than Aaron. She was also wealthier, more established and – with friends like artist Damien Hirst and Elton John – enviably better connected.

What’s more, as the director of his breakout movie, she was effectively his boss.

But despite the cascade of “casting couch” accusations, the couple remained defiant – and a year after they met, Aaron got down on one knee.

Critics loudly declared it wouldn’t last, with one commenter suggesting: “Let’s see how long he sticks around if he makes it big.”

Another scoffed: “I give it three months.”

By 2010 they’d welcomed their first child together – daughter Wylda Rae, now 14 – and second daughter Romy followed in January 2012.

They married five months later at Babington House in Somerset – a lavish do attended by Beyonce and Elton John – and combined their surnames. They now live down the road in a £1.85m farmhouse in Bruton.

Aaron claimed he wasn’t nervous about fatherhood as he’d already settled into the role of stepdad to Sam’s two daughters – Angelica, now 28, and Jessie Phoenix, now 18 – despite the fact that Angelica was only six years his junior.

He’s made a point of stating he considers them both his own daughters, affectionately calling Jessie his “babygirl” in an Instagram caption last year to mark her 18th birthday.

Obviously any suggestion he’s anything more than a loving stepfather is unfounded – which is why the latest slew of rumours surrounding Aaron and his stepdaughter must have stung.

Last December Aaron and Sam were joined by Angelica and Jessie Phoenix on the red carpet for the premiere of his movie Kraven The Hunter.

Posing for the cameras, Aaron put his arm around Jessie Phoenix and gave her a reassuring stroke on the back.

The candid moment – a fatherly gesture no doubt intended to reassure the camera-shy teenager – was catnip to twisted internet trolls who branded the it “disgusting”, while TikTok lit up with clips of the moment.

Wild conspiracy theories of an illicit affair flooded the comments, with one commenter questioning: “Are they flirting?” and another writing: “What if being with the grandma is all a show and he’s with her daughter?”

A third added: “If I didn’t know their story, I would think that was his girlfriend.”

Unsurprisingly the couple, nor their children, dignified the ludicrous furore with a response.

Their reaction was the same when, two years ago, vicious rumours swirled that Aaron had an affair with his much younger Bullet Train co-star Joey King, 25.

I much prefer being a parent to working. Doesn’t everybody?

Aaron Taylor-Johnson

In his early 20s, father-of-four Aaron claimed he was just as happy playing a stay-at-home dad as he was leading blockbuster films.

His early roles in their relationship included Kick Ass, Savages, Anna Karenina and Godzilla.

When Sam won the highly-contested directing gig for Fifty Shades of Grey in 2015, he took time off to man the fort at home.

As he later told The Post, “I much prefer being a parent to working. Doesn’t everybody? The best time I have is with my kids, experiencing their growth and their life with them. I think it’s important to have time to enjoy that.”

As for Sam, she paid tribute to him while promoting the film, saying, “Being in an amazing relationship, having come out of a difficult one, it felt so good [that he stayed at home while she worked].

“And I feel like that stability has enabled me to get on with doing this momentous project.”

She then returned the favour, enabling him to star in 2016’s Nocturnal Animals to rave reviews and a Golden Globe Award

Paying tribute to his beloved in his speech, he said: “I want to thank my wife for being there with me, supporting me through this.

“Thank you for putting up with me. Jesus, that was not very pleasant in this role, so you’re my soulmate and I love you very much… I’m blessed. I have four beautiful daughters: Anjelica, Phoenix, Wylda, and Romy, I love you all very much.”

Sam has described Aaron as an old soul in a younger man’s body, and claims their strong union has come from their ability to ignore the uproar.

Sam’s ex Jay Jopling, now 62, had a fling with Lily Allen, now 40, when she was 23

In 2017, she said: “If I gave a second thought to other people, I would be the unhappiest person, probably still in a miserable marriage.

“People like to talk about [the age gap]. I’m like, ‘Yeah, but it works better than my last marriage’. It’s lasted longer than a lot of my friends’ marriages.”

Ironically, months before she and Aaron went public, her ex Jay Jopling was embroiled in his own age-gap romance when he was pictured kissing a then 23-year-old Lily Allen in the Caribbean

The fling fizzled out quickly, but he was never tarnished with the same “groomer” label as Sam.

Power play

Speaking in 2023, Amelia Kelley, a trauma-informed therapist, told Business Insider that criticism surrounding the Taylor-Johnsons was blatant misogyny.

“When we see an older woman with a younger man, it underscores that the woman isn’t as young as we think they should be,” she said.

“That could be uncomfortable for someone to see.”

Yet Elizabeth Jeglic, a professor of psychology at John Jay College in New York, argued against the gendered critique, suggesting it was Sam who could have abused her position of power

“The person who is older tends to be a person who has more power or more experience,” she said.

“They often will select individuals who are younger and more inexperienced because they’re more vulnerable. And that creates an unequal power dynamic.”

Aaron’s still surprised by the furore and frenzy his age-gap romance stirs up.

Speaking last year to Rolling Stone, he said, “What you gotta realise is that what most people were doing in their twenties, I was doing when I was 13.

“You’re doing something too quickly for someone else? I don’t understand that. What speed are you supposed to enjoy life at? It’s bizarre to me.”

General consensus is that Aaron wasn’t seeking a mummy figure because of any maternal hole in his life.

He’s in fact remained incredibly close to his own mother, Sarah, who accompanied him to film sets throughout his young career, taught him “how to be a man” and has played an active role in raising her grandchildren.

As for his early dating life there’s no sign of any prior “older woman fetish”, with previous flings including actresses Georgia Groome, 33, and Alice Connor, 34.

Likewise, it doesn’t seem like Sam was simply looking for someone to baby or boss around.

She may be a bigwig director, but she’s just as happy sharing the spotlight with her incredibly successful, increasingly handsome younger husband.

Aaron’s role in Danny Boyle’s latest epic promises to strengthen his position as one of the UK’s most successful actors on both sides of the pond – while whispers that he’s favourite to play the next James Bond continue.

As the couple hit the red carpet this week, now aged 35 and 58 respectively, one cynic wrote, “son and great-grandma”, while another commented, “She really got her claws in deep, that one.”

But refreshingly, many comments now celebrate the pair, with one writing: “Good on them for proving haters wrong.”

Another added: “Age is just a number when you love each other as this couple obviously do.”

It’s safe to say they’ll never stop courting controversy – as every time they step out together, the public are reminded of how it all began.

But over a decade later, the Taylor-Johnsons continue to put two fingers up to their doubters.

BBC Breakfast likened to ‘the Hunger Games’ amid toxicity claims and Naga Munchetty bullying row

THE Sun’s exposé on toxic BBC Breakfast has ripped a chasm through the show — with staff likening the workplace to Hunger Games.

We told this week how editor Richard Frediani is on extended leave amid bullying claims, and separate complaints were made about host Naga Munchetty

Crew are trapped in the middle as the scandal has triggered stories from opposing sides.

Staff are terrified about what is going to come out in case they are caught in the crossfire.

A source said: “Breakfast is no longer just divided, it’s been ripped apart.

“Some workers back Frediani’s tougher, more traditional journalistic approach and think the ‘softies’ need thicker skin.

“Others find him to be a bully and have welcomed the investigation into his behaviour. That already created two camps on the show. But the revelations about Naga have thrown a new twist on the scandal.

“Some find her a passionate advocate of people behind the scenes, while others find her as difficult as Fredi.

“This explosive mix has led to a deluge of revelations from both sides, creating a huge headache for the BBC as it scrambles to mop up the mess. It’s everyone for themselves like the Hunger Games.”

Naga arrived for work promptly yesterday despite our front page on two complaints lodged against her for bullying and making a slang term for a sexual act

Viewers noticed Naga, 50, and co-host, Charlie Stayt, 63, failed to browse the day’s newspapers, as is customary.

She also looked tense as the pair smoked cigarettes outside the Salford studio.

Naga, who has also worked across Radio 5 Live, was hauled before bosses for the incidents in 2022 and 2024 and reprimanded but no formal action was taken.

Her supporters believe she is at the “end of her tether” with the fractious working environment.

They add: “Naga finds the whole situation frustrating, particularly with Fredi.

“She is passionate about speaking up if she believes something is wrong, has spoken to people who are unhappy and is always trying to help others behind the scenes.”

However, another insider has shared opinion that Frediani’s tough leadership may be a response to Naga’s behaviour, not the cause of the problem.

The source said: “Managing Naga is a full-time job. She makes it incredibly hard to do the job and when Fredi tries to enforce boundaries and run a tight ship, he gets accused of being draconian.

“People are too scared to challenge her, because of who she is.”

Among the divide are those who are just trying to uphold the BBC’s standards on the show.

A separate source said: “The fact remains that bad behaviour is bad behaviour and no one — be it bosses, talent, crew — should be above reproach.”

BBC said: “While we do not comment on individual cases, we take all complaints about conduct at work extremely seriously.”

Naga and Frediani’s representatives were approached for comment.

New Club World Cup rule introduced for first time in Fifa history in major boost to Lionel Messi

LIONEL MESSI’S bid for shock Club World Cup glory has been boosted by a rule change.

Messi‘s Inter Miami are joint top of Group A after his majestic winner against Porto.

And for the first time in the competition’s history, Fifa are adopting Uefa-style rules to sort out who goes through – if teams end up tied.

The leading two sides in each of the eight four-team groups qualify for the last 16.

The problem will come if two clubs are tied on points for a qualifying place.

Fifa used to decide it on goal difference.

But this summer they have switched to head-to-head records.

That’s left David Beckham’s Miami in a brilliant position to go through – one they surely could only have dreamed of.

It means Miami will go through – unless they lose to Palmeiras on Messi’s 38th birthday next Tuesday AND Al Ahly overcome Porto.

Fifa will hope the full range of tiebreakers won’t be needed to split teams if they are level on points.

That’s because the eighth and final option is the dreaded drawing of lots.

After points and head-to-head record, goal difference between the teams in question is the third criteria.

Goals scored between the two sides is next – followed by group goal difference and then group goals scored.

Down at number seven is disciplinary points from yellow and red cards.

A booking for a player of staff member is minus one point, two yellows for the same person is minus three, and a straight red card minus four.

Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi will of course aim to produce more magic to kill off the need for such tiebreakers.

Fans raved he was “still the GOAT” and “from another planet” after his curling free-kick sunk Porto 2-1 on Thursday night, watched by 31,783 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Fighter jets scrambled to Brit TUI flight to Lanzarote after terrifying bomb threat note is found in toilet

HOLIDAYMAKERS were left terrified after a bomb threat note was found on a Brit TUI flight from Cardiff to Lanzarote – forcing fighter jets to scramble.

Cheryl Sainsbury, 43 and her pals, from Pontypridd, were all smiles en route to the Canaries – until the pilot made a chilling mid-air announcement.

While flying over Portugal on Thursday morning, Welsh pals Cheryl, Leanne Thomas, Cherie Gurner and Tara Pumford were stunned when the pilot announced the plane must land urgently due to reports of a “device” on board.

Cheryl said: “We were sort of looking at each other thinking ‘what’s he on about’?

“We were all scared but there was no sense of panic as such on board. Everybody seemed to come together and just looked out for each other. We all wanted to make sure everyone was ok.”

Everyone was told to remain in their seats.

The crew searched under the seats and in the overhead lockers to check that all the luggage was accounted for.

Cheryl said: “I think they were looking for a black rucksack.”

Passengers reportedly tried to message loved ones to tell them what was happening as they anxiously waited for updates from the cabin crew.

The group initially thought someone had phoned in a bomb threat – only later did they learn a handwritten note was found by a crew member in one of the aircraft’s toilets.

The pilot then announced a risk assessment had been done and the threat was deemed low, meaning the plane would no longer be landing earlier in Portugal.

But for everyone’s safety, two Portuguese fighter jets escorted the plane to its destination of Arrecife in Lanzarote.

Lanzarote is a popular holiday destination for Brits[/caption]

Cheryl said: “Once we landed on the ground, it was the biggest celebration and sense of relief.

“We were taken to a remote part of the airport and there were police and fire engines surrounding the plane. We had to get off one-by-one.”

The group then had to wait for the emergency services on the ground to check through the luggage before they were allowed to leave.

Cheryl explained: “We had to stand on the tarmac with all the luggage but we weren’t allowed to touch of any of it.

“They brought sniffer dogs and the bomb squad so we just had to stand their and watch before they let us on the bus.

“We got taken to some form of compound where there were no refreshments and just one toilet.

“We just had to wait their until they had approval from the police to let us go to get back to the normal part of the airport where we could go through immigration and collect our cases.”

The friends are now unwinding in Lanzarote with a drink or two to help “settle their nerves” after the ordeal.

They are due to fly back home on Sunday – and are hoping that flight will be less eventful.

Cheryl said: “It was such a weird experience especially as I’m a quite anxious flyer so I don’t know how we did it. Even though we were all scared, we just stuck together and tried to keep it calm.”

She added that the cabin crew from TUI remained calm and were “brilliant” with all the passengers.

Specialists from the GEDEX (Explosives Deactivation Group), the Fiscal and Border Section, investigation units and citizen security patrols all intervened, as reported by The Sun on Thursday.

The inspection found no explosive device on board.

Flight BY6422 landed at Lanzarote airport at around 10.55am on Thursday.

A spokesperson for Cardiff Airport said: “We are aware of an incident involving flight TOM6422 from Cardiff to Lanzarote on 19/06/25.

“The safety of our passengers is our number one priority. No concerns or suspicious activity were raised prior to departure.”

Spain’s Civil Guard has launched an investigation to determine who wrote the note.

The force stressed that this type of act is a serious crime, as it causes alarm, compromises public safety and forces specialised resources to be used.

TUI has been contacted for comment.

I work at Costa – the five annoying things people always do – please stop ordering whilst on your phone for starters

A WOMAN who works as a barista in Costa has revealed the most annoying traits of customers.

Lauren Taylor, from the UK, took to social media to inform people about what they shouldn’t do when ordering a coffee.

Lauren Taylor didn’t hold back[/caption]

The first annoying thing many customers do is simply forget their manners.

Lauren will greet customers with a ‘hello’ but instead of saying it back, many bark their drink order at her.

“A simple hello goes a long way,” she reminded them.

Another grievance of Lauren’s was that customers would not pick a size for their drink, instead insisting they wanted a ‘normal’ size.

She urged them to simply look at the available sizes and pick one.

The barista was also fed up with customers thinking she was a mind reader when it came to what coffee they wanted.

Many would ask for ‘just a coffee’ despite having twenty different ones to choose from

Lauren would often suggest a classic Americano with milk, but would be corrected by the customer that they wanted a latte.

The barista was often stuck calling out the coffee order to the customer standing in front of them with no reply in return.

She said it seems like customers often forget what they ordered or choose to blatantly ignore her.

Last but not least, Lauren was sick of customers ordering their coffee while being busy on the phone.

Not only was it rude, but customers often order the wrong drink as they’re preoccupied and then blame the barista.

“Somehow, this is still my fault,” she said.

The video has since gone viral on her TikTok account @laurenjtaylor with over 88k views.

Costa Coffee loyalty scheme perks

COSTA Club members can get early access to new menus among other perks.

To join download the Costa Coffee app, it’s free to download via the Apple app store or Google Play store.

Stamps can be collected in any of the chain’s 2,800 coffee shops, as well as around 12,000 machines in petrol stations and convenience stores.

You can get stamps for spending in store and using a reusable cup.

You get a free drink after collecting ten stamps, or beans as they are called.

For a small latte, at £3.50, it’s £35 to get a free coffee.

Those going to a Costa store can earn an additional bean with a reusable cup, so that cuts the outlay down to £17.50 or buying five coffees.

  • How it works: 1 drink purchased = 1 bean, 10 beans = free drink
  • Small latte cost: £3.50
  • Number of drinks to hit target: 10
  • Cost for a ‘free’ coffee: £35
  • Reusable cup bonus: Yes, one extra bean

You also get free cake on your birthday.

Plenty of people who work in hospitality took to the comments, sharing their own stories.

One person wrote: “I work at Greggs and I feel your pain.”

Another commented: “I had a woman last week ask me for a normal coffee… she wanted an oat milk flat white.”

“‘Regular latte’ ‘Ok medium’ ‘No?? Small,'” penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: “I work at Costa and can confirm all these things are 100% spot on.”

“As someone who works in a cinema I totally understand this! No one ever tells you what they actually want,” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “’Can I get a white coffee’ then proceeds to argue with me that a white coffee is a latte and there’s no such thing as an americano with milk.2

Moment man crumples to floor after ‘UK’s hottest curry’ – could you handle it?

THIS is the moment a diner crumples to the floor outside a restaurant after eating the “UK’s hottest curry.”

The man, named Daniel, took on the challenge of eating the extremely spicy curry served by London restaurant, Bengal Village, located in Brick Lane.

Video of Daniel’s attempt shows Mr Raj, who is the face of Bengal Village, serving Daniel the dish whilst wearing a gas mask, gloves and sunglasses.

Mr Raj warns: “It does get to the back of your throat a bit.

“Have some water, we’ll be alright.”

Daniel can next be seen taking a spoonful of the dish and struggling to tolerate the spice, then turning red.

It then cuts to Daniel collapsed on the pavement outside the restaurant, with his shirt off visibly sweating, and a small carton of milk beside him.

Mr Raj attempts to comfort his customer outside on the floor, bringing him a large glass of mango lassi.

“It will cool all your insides, your livers, and within ten minutes you’ll be back up,” Mr Raj says.

“Believe me, just take it, please listen to me.

“I know I’m not a doctor, but it will help you.”

If a customer is able to finish the curry within 15 minutes, they are able to receive their whole table meal for free no matter how many guests.

London’s so-called “hottest curry” contains 72 spices, including the hot Carolina Reaper and a rare chilli from Bangladesh known as “snake chilli”.

On the Bengal Village website, the restaurant writes: “Disclaimer: We take no responsibility of any after effects.”

Owner of Bengal Village, Mo, 24, who has been running the establishment since he was 17, has seen the challenge blow up after sharing it on social media.

The restaurant owner believes it is the worlds hottest curry[/caption]

He told The Sun: “We believe it’s actually the worlds hottest but the public can decide that.

“We add 72 different chilli’s to this curry so it cost us a lot more to make than to sell it.

“The chilli’s we use for this curry are from all around the world especially India and Bangladesh where my heritage start.”

He added: “We do not encourage any customers to have this dish, they do on their own accord.”

The restaurant also offers a number of other challenges if customers have no chance of completing the hot curry challenge.

They include consuming three poppadoms within 60 seconds without any fluids, or a “roll the dice” to get two sixes.

However, the hot curry remains their most popular challenge.

Daniel was reportedly fine after a short while with restaurant owner Mo telling The Sun: “After about 30 minutes he was fine and well, it’s a temporary pain.”

How to manage a spicy dish

Here's how to cool down your mouth after a spicy dish

To effectively manage the heat from spicy food you could consume dairy products like milk or yogurt.

Alternatively, acidic foods like lemonade or orange juice can help neutralize the spice.

Starchy foods such as bread, rice, or potatoes can also absorb some of the spice and provide relief.

Capsaicin is the chemical compound that gives chillies their heat. Dairy products, acidic foods and starchy foods all work to eliminate capsaicin in different ways.

  • Milk: Whole milk is often recommended over skim milk due to its higher fat content, which helps bind to capsaicin.
  • Yogurt: Provides a cooling effect and contains casein, which helps neutralize capsaicin.
  • Other Dairy: Sour cream or ice cream can also be helpful.
  • Lemonade, Limeade, Orange Juice: The acidity can help counteract the spicy sensation.
  • Tomato-based foods: The acidity can also help.
  • Bread: Crusty bread with its nooks and crannies can help distract the taste buds.
  • Rice, Potatoes, or other starchy foods: Can absorb some of the capsaicin.

Bale’s group sent a letter of intent to Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan last month, which was rejected.

But it is believed the desire to acquire the club, relegated from the Championship, remains strong.

The 35-year-old was born in Cardiff and his uncle Chris Pike played for the Welsh club as a striker between 1989 and 1993.

Bale, who had a glittering career for Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid and LAFC as well as for the Dragons, had been linked with a takeover at Plymouth.

He led his country to their first World Cup since 1958 as well as appearing at two Euros finals, including the incredible run to the 2016 semi-finals.

Bale is also Wales’ most-capped player on 111 caps and record goalscorer after netting 41 times.

He did not play for Cardiff but the ex-forward did have talks with the club in 2022 after he left Real.

Instead, Bale went to LAFC before he officially retired in January 2023.

Bale’s potential investment in Cardiff comes just weeks after ex-Spurs and Real team-mate Luka Modric became a co-owner of south Wales rivals Swansea.

Cardiff appointed Brian Barry-Murphy this week ahead of their first campaign in the third tier since 2003.

After Omer Riza was sacked in April, Wales star Aaron Ramsey was interim boss for three games.

But Bale’s close pal is set for a move to continue his playing career in Mexico.

I’m beating the heat with phone-controlled Dyson fan – sleep mode is great but best perk has nothing to do with cooling

I JUST visited Dyson’s website and it told me 1,600 people were also looking at the same fan I’ve been trying out.

I’m not surprised: it’s absolutely baking this week and the weekend is only going to be hotter – so I’m thrilled I’ve got the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde pointed directly at my face.

The name is a mouthful admittedly, but don’t let that put you off.

This posh fan is an elite bit of cooling gear, and would probably be better suited on a spaceship than my desk.

It cools you down, obviously. You’d expect that for £699.99. But it does so much more. Somehow, I’m convinced it’s absolutely worth the money – but first, let’s talk about how it looks.

DYSON HP09 DESIGN – THE LOOKS

This is one of Dyson’s quintessential bladeless fans.

It’s the classic design of legendary inventor Sir James Dyson, who recently spoke to The Sun about ambition and the future of Britain. They’re a brainy lot at Dyson HQ.

To an observer, there are no moving parts. No whirring blades that risk slicing a fingertip off (and it doesn’t make that whoosh-whoosh-whoosh noise either).

There is a blade-like impeller in the base that draws air in and accelerates it, pushing it out to create a cooling airflow. But you don’t see any of that. You just feel wondrously cold.

The one I’ve been trying has a white and gold trim that should suit most rooms. It’s not gaudy – but it looks fancy enough to justify the price tag.

The squat design means that it’s fine to live on the floor, but can also sit on a desk if you prefer.

And it can oscillate up to a whopping 350 degrees, so you can send a breeze to everyone in the room. Or just can have it locked to cool you and you alone. The choice is yours.

All in all, it’s especially pretty and, as a bonus, your pals will be impressed by (and envious of) your luxe gadget. Especially in the heat.

DYSON HP09 PERFORMANCE – HOT OR COLD?

This fan heats and cools. The clue is in the name: Hot+Cool.

It does both very well, though I think its real benefit is heating.

Cooling is fine, and works best when the fan is pointed directly at you.

But the heating function can really warm up an entire room very quickly, even if you’re not in the line of fire.

Some Dyson fans only cool, so having one that does both massively increases the value for money. After all, you can use it all year round.

The cooling really does work, even when it’s not at max power. And its reach is impressive – I can sit across the room and feel the breeze.

It’s not particularly loud unless you put it on power level 10, and even then it’s not awful. You can easily have a conversation over it.

I can sleep through it at max power too.

But for light sleepers, there’s a night mode that dims the built-in display and lets it run especially quietly.

That’s probably the best way to use it, especially if you’re sharing a bed and value your relationship.

DYSON HP09 FEATURES – THE BRAINS

The Dyson comes with a remote control, which is a handy way to control fan speed, cooling power, and rotation.

But I prefer using the app, which is free to download and has all of the same buttons.

It’s better because I always have my phone, but I’m not always with the remote.

And if I’ve forgotten to turn it off before I go out, I can easily check on the app and shut it down.

DYSON HP09 PURIFICATION – THE REAL PERK

What I’ve completely avoided talking about up to this point is the purification.

You attach filters during setup – it only takes a few seconds[/caption]

Why? Because I’m saving the best until last.

The real perk of the fan isn’t the heating or cooling – but its ability to preserve your life by scrubbing the air of pollutants.

This fan comes with a series of filters (you snap them in during the 60-second setup) that snag all kind of nasties that would otherwise be entering your lungs.

I don’t know about you, but I quite like my respiratory system.

The app has all of the features you’d find on the remote – and plenty more[/caption]

All of this can be monitored inside the app I was talking about earlier.

It shows exactly how polluted the room is (and by what – down to specifics, including dreaded formaldehyde) and you can watch the levels go down as the fan works its magic.

You can also see air quality reports on the fan’s built-in display, but the screen gives a much more detailed view.

Heating and cooling is fine, but it’s hard to put a price on your health.

WHERE CAN FORMALDEHYDE COME FROM IN YOUR HOME?

Formaldehyde is a polluting gas that you'll often find in homes

Here’s Dyson’s list of sources for the gas…

  • Paint
  • Varnish
  • Glue
  • Air freshener
  • Mattresses
  • Household cleaners
  • Carpets
  • Particleboard
  • Plywood
  • Electronics
  • Dryer sheets
  • Nail polish remover
  • Moth balls
  • Toys
  • Fireplaces
  • Wood-burning stoves

Sure, you’re paying a lot. You can get fans for significantly cheaper. If you’re on a budget, don’t buy this. But if you’ve got the cash to spare and want a super fan, you can’t go wrong with this model.

The filters will last about a year, and you’ll get an alert when it’s time to change them.

And they promise to remove 99.95% of particles down to a shockingly tiny 0.1 microns.

That means you’re waving goodbye to mould spores, allergens, bacteria, viruses, and (as the name suggests) irritating formaldehyde, which can come from paint, furniture, carpets, tech, and more.

You might not “see” the benefits, but having the peace of mind that you’re not breathing in rubbish will help you sleep easier.

So will the fan, though.
