Premier League club set to get green light for £130million stadium expansion that will boost capacity by thousands

A PREMIER LEAGUE club have been given a huge boost after getting the green light for their £130million stadium expansion.

The club moved into their current home ground all the way back in 1898 – 127 years ago.

The project could cost £130m but see the capacity increase to 35,000[/caption]

And now Nottingham Forest are preparing to make their latest improvements to the historic stadium.

The City Ground was updated in 1957, 1965, 1980, 1993 and 1996.

But no major work has been done on the venue for almost 30 years.

Now, though, Forest have taken a big step closer to moderning and expanding their home.

Plans to bulldoze and rebuild the Peter Taylor stand will be put forward to the Rushcliffe Borough Council on June 26.

And the planning committee will consider the application after the council planning department “recommended that planning permission be granted subject to a series of planning conditions”.

Should it get through as expected, Forest can start making progress with the update.

The plans will see a new 10,000-seater stand built.

It would also be the tallest of the stands at the stadium at 38m tall.

The new main stand’s opening should take the City Ground capacity from 30,404 to an initial 35,000.

When first proposed in 2019, the estimated cost was £94m.

However, that has now risen to £130m.

The longer-term plan is then to develop the Bridgford end and increase the number of seats to 40,000 while a 169-apartment block of flats is also in the works.

A Forest and council joint statement said: “Nottingham Forest has been in regular dialogue with Rushcliffe Borough Council, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council regarding the redevelopment of the City Ground.

“The parties can confirm they are working towards the Rushcliffe Borough Council Planning Committee date of Thursday, 26 June to consider the application.

“There will be no further comment other than as required by the relevant legal process.”

It is thought the final administration will be through in 2026, with Forest set to start construction work as soon as possible after that.

Roy Keane’s future son-in-law makes statement on England career amid ‘one-cap wonder’ fears

TAYLOR HARWOOD-BELLIS fears becoming a “one-cap wonder” – after Southampton’s relegation to the Championship.

The Saints centre-back, 22, made his Three Lions debut last November against Ireland.

But after relegation to the Championship, the centre-back admits it will be tough to break into the World Cup squad[/caption]

Harwood-Bellis found the net in a 5-0 victory at Wembley.

But after relegation back to the second tier with the Saints, he admits a place on the plane for next summer’s World Cup is unlikely.

Harwood-Bellis told Sky Sports: “It’s the dream to play for England and my dream came true.

“You want to stay there and not be a one-cap wonder.

“I’ve got a long way to go. I wouldn’t say I’m mad close to the team at the minute, with the season going the way it went.

“At the end of the day, it’s how you do it at your club.

“Personally, if I look at it selfishly, to get back in the England squad, I need to be playing well in the Premier League.”

Southampton have brought in Will Still in a bid to bounce back to the top flight at the first attempt.

SunSport revealed earlier this week that Burnley are preparing to hand Harwood-Bellis a Prem lifeline.

But the 22-year-old – who is engaged to Roy Keane’s daughter Leah – is fully focused on his job at St Marys.

He continued: “If I want to play for England, we’ve got to get promoted.

“People around me know that, and I think the fans know that as well.

“We don’t want to be playing in the Championship, we want to be playing in the Premier League. We’ve got a taste of it now.

“We’ve got the bit between our teeth to go and do a better job.

“It couldn’t have gone any worse in the Premier League last time. We’ve got to put that wrong, right.”

Away from the pitch, Harwood-Bellis got engaged to Leah last year.

Keane was there to watch at Wembley as the youngster netted on his Three Lions bow.

Asked about Harwood-Bellis joining his family, Roy joked: “It’s not done and dusted yet.

“Things can change really quickly in the Keane household.”

But he also gave him a glowing review, saying: “It’s nice for him, it’s good for him to make his debut.

“He is a really good kid and his family have done a great job.

“He has got a goal threat. Over the last few months, he has showed he has got a goal in him for Southampton.”

Owen Farrell reveals why ‘Lions will learn a hell of a lot’ from shock Argentina loss as Andy’s son debuts on Sky Sports

OWEN Farrell believes has weighed in on the Lions defeat to Argentina.

And he’s sure the British and Irish Lions will “learn a hell of a lot” from their opening defeat to Argentina – a disappointing result that has ramped up the pressure ahead of next week’s tour of Australia.

Andy Farrell’s side jetted off to Australia today after last night’s shock defeat

The Lions fell 28-24 to the Pumas at a packed Aviva Stadium on Friday night in what was their first-ever fixture at the Dublin venue.

Despite a few attacking glimpses, the home side never found their rhythm and were punished after too many fudamental mistakes.

Speaking on punditry duty for Sky Sports, ex- England captain Owen Farrell said: “I think a lot of the game was played in the right parts of the field.

“Obviously a lot of balls didn’t stick and there will be a lot of images that they’ll look back on the game from and learn from.”

He added: “Argentina did incredibly well to counter punch when they got the opportunity, whether it be a ball on the floor or a turnover, they seemed to turn things into points pretty quickly.”

“I’m sure the Lions boys will be frustrated, but I think the main thing is that they’ve played this great game now, this great competitive game that they’ve played in, and they’ll have some images to go off to see what is the standard and what’s not.”

“Why some of those balls went down, why some of those decisions were good and some not so good. I think they’ll learn a hell of a lot, a hell of a lot about each other, a hell of a lot as a team and it will put them in good stead for next week.”

Head coach Andy Farrell slammed his side in his post-match comments before praising the Pumas’ performance and the Lions’ flaws.

The Ireland boss said: “Yeah, we made it a tough game, didn’t we.

“Obviously the first and appropriate thing to say is congratulations to Argentina, they thoroughly deserved to win the Test match.”

“They capitalised very well on the back of quite a few errors from us. Congratulations to them. I’m sure that’s a big moment in Argentinean history.”

“You can try and throw it all around and say we had plenty of opportunities and we should have done better to convert that, but the whole story of the game is that we compounded too many errors.

“In the end, we weren’t able to put the pace on the game because of that.”

“We’re not sugar-coating anything because we need to be honest because if we’re not honest how do we gain trust with each other.

“We have to say it as it is. There are certain things we said we were going to do and we need to own that and review that properly.”

Andy Farrell’s side jetted out to Australia this afternoon from Dublin airport as they prepare for a tense schedule.

British & Irish Lions full schedule

The Lions will play 10 matches in total in 2025, with the first on June 20, and the final game on August 2.

All the fixtures will be at 11am BST, apart from the clash against Argentina in Dublin.

The fixtures are as follows:

  • vs Argentina, June 20 (8pm BST)
  • vs Western Force, June 28
  • vs Queensland Reds, July 2
  • vs NSW Waratahs, July 5
  • vs ACT Brumbies, July 9
  • vs Invitational Australia & New Zealand, July 12
  • vs First Nations & Pasifika XV, July 22

Experts reveal a handy tip for sleeping on hot nights – it won’t cost you a thing and only takes seconds

AS the scorching weather continues across the UK, many people have been finding it difficult to sleep.

And as weather experts now say the heatwave is reaching its peak, a handy hack will help make your bedroom feel more comfortable tonight.

A simple step can help you get to sleep during the hot summer nights (stock image)[/caption]

Avoid another night of tossing and turning in a sweltering room with this completely free step.

A sleep specialist has revealed that the position of your door can significantly affect your night’s sleep.

Choosing the perfect angle can help to reduce bedroom temperatures during heatwaves, helping you to sleep through the hot summer nights.

Dr. Jordan Burns from AmeriSleep explained that the way bedroom doors are positioned affects airflow patterns within sleeping spaces.

This creates a cooling cross-ventilation or can trap even heat, depending on the angle chosen.

“Most people focus solely on windows for cooling, but bedroom doors control how air circulates throughout your sleeping space,” Dr. Burns said.

“A properly positioned door can make the difference between restful sleep and hours of uncomfortable tossing and turning.”

The expert recommended keeping bedroom doors fully open during daytime hours if the rest of the home is cooler, allowing for maximum air exchange between spaces.

This approach works particularly well for rooms that receive direct sunlight.

“When outside temperatures climb higher than those inside your home, keeping your bedroom door wide open allows cooler air from north-facing rooms to circulate throughout,” he said.

“This creates a natural current that pushes hot air up and out while drawing cooler air in from below.”

For night-time cooling, however, he suggested a more precise approach to door positioning.

“The optimal angle for a bedroom door at night is approximately 45 degrees,” Dr. Burns explained.

“This specific position creates what fluid dynamics calls a ‘venturi effect’ that accelerates airflow through the narrower opening, pulling hot air out more efficiently than a fully open door would.”

The sleep specialist points out that most people make the common mistake of either leaving doors completely open or fully closed during hot weather.

The best sleep routine and environment

Thomas Høegh Reisenhus, TEMPUR® sleep specialist & sleep counsellor, reveals the key components of a good bedtime routine and environment...

A sure-fire way to facilitate a better night’s sleep is to practice good sleep hygiene.

Establish a sleep routine that works for you and stick to it.

This will help your body establish a consistent, natural sleep-wake cycle which can do wonders for your overall sleep quality.

As such, try to avoid making up for lost sleep with a lie-in.

Instead of sleeping in, spend your morning reading a book in bed or having a leisurely coffee in the kitchen.

Ensure that your bedroom, bedding, and sleepwear are fit for purpose too.

The ideal sleep environment is dark, quiet, and cool – much like a cave.

If you find unwelcome sources of light are keeping you up, consider investing in an eye mask or black-out curtains.

Adding soft furnishings can be a great way to reduce noise, with the surfaces having an absorptive quality, but if this doesn’t work, consider embracing a soothing soundtrack to block it out.

In terms of temperature, try to keep your bedroom at 18°C. You can further reduce the risk of waking up due to overheating by ensuring that all your bedding and sleepwear is made with natural, breathable materials such as cotton and linen.

Bear in mind that everyone is different; what might work for most, may not work for you!

Whilst knowing how much sleep you should get, how to overcome common barriers, and practicing good sleep hygiene can facilitate a great night’s sleep, if you continue to struggle with sleep or fatigue persistently, do not hesitate to visit a doctor or health professional for support.

“A completely open door actually slows down airflow in many cases because the opening is too large to create the pressure differentials that drive air movement,” he said.

“Conversely, a fully closed door prevents any air exchange, trapping heat and moisture that build up while you sleep.”

According to Dr. Burns, door positioning must work together with window management for maximum cooling effect.

“If your windows and door create a straight-line path, you’ll generate the strongest possible airflow through your bedroom,” he said.

“The ideal setup in UK homes is having your bedroom door at 45 degrees with windows open on the opposite wall, creating a direct pathway for air movement.”

The expert also stressed the importance of furniture placement in relation to door positioning.

“Keep furniture at least 30 centimetres away from the door swing path,” Dr. Burns advised.

“Tall wardrobes or dressers near doors can block airflow and create stagnant air pockets where heat accumulates.”

Sleep experts revealed how the position of your door can help you from overheating at night (stock image)[/caption]

For flats and apartments where cross-ventilation options are limited, Dr. Burns recommends changing door positions throughout the day based on sun exposure and temperature variations.

“In single-aspect flats, try keeping your bedroom door closed during the day if that room receives direct sunlight,” he said.

“Then open it to precisely 45 degrees at night when the rest of the flat has cooled down.”

He suggested a simple method to test if your door positioning is working effectively for bedroom cooling.

“Place a lightweight ribbon or tissue near the gap between the door and frame,” he advised.

“If it moves toward the door, you’re successfully drawing air through the room.

“If it remains still or moves away, adjust your window and door configuration until you achieve proper airflow.

“Good sleep remains possible during hot weather if you understand how to control airflow in your home.

“Door positioning is a cost-free intervention that can improve your sleeping environment while reducing both energy costs and environmental impact compared to mechanical cooling options.”

TRIBUTES have been paid to a teen who tragically died after drowning while swimming with pals in Meath yesterday.

Talented footballer Kofi Owusu, 15, has been remembered as a “gentle giant” as his club declared: “We are heartbroken.”

His body was recovered from the River Nanny in Laytown, Co Meath, on Friday night —  three hours after the alarm was raised.

Kofi, who also went by the surname of Jackson, became the second teenager to lose his life in the water this week.

Kofi was with friends enjoying the hot weather in the water near Laytown Beach when tragedy struck.

A member of the public called emergency services at around 6.15 pm and a major search got underway involving the Irish Coast Guard Rescue 116 helicopter the Drogheda Coast Guard.

At around 9.30pm, a body was recovered from the water following the operation.

Kofi was from the Blackrock area of Dundalk and had travelled from the northeast town to Laytown with his pals.

In an emotional post by his football club Redeemer Celtic, they lay two No 6 jerseys and flowers on their pitch in his memory.

In a post on social media, the club said: “We are Heartbroken. Closed until further notice.”

Tributes have been paid by club members, with one saying: “RIP Kofi. Thinking of his family, friends and teammates. Absolutely devastating news. A lovely kid and a gentle giant.”  Another said: “Rip Kofi, you’ll be missed pal.”

Colaiste Chu Chulainn Principal Thomas Sharkey also paid tribute, saying the school community was “heartbroken” by the teen’s death.

He also described Kofi as “a fine young man, a very kind, a very caring and a very diligent student”.

He added: “He’s an excellent sportsman. He had just played in an All-Ireland basketball final and in a Leinster soccer final in his age group of under-16.

“He finished his Junior Cert exams only 10 days ago, and his older sister was a past pupil of our school. Kofi and his family are in all of our thoughts.”

SCHOOL SUPPORT

Mr Sharkey also said that the school will be there to support its students at this difficult time.

He added: “The school community are being supported by the Department of Education and Youth, and the National Education Psychological Service.

“The school will be opening to give an opportunity to students and staff alike to come together and to support each other and to remember Kofi at this very, very sad time.”

A post-mortem will take place at Navan Hospital before Kofi’s remains are returned to his family for a funeral service.

“He’s an excellent sportsman. He had just played in an All-Ireland basketball final and in a Leinster soccer final in his age group of under-16.”

Thomas SharkeyColaiste Chu Chulainn Principal

Cllr Sharon Tolan told how the community was “devastated” over the incident as she passed on her condolences to the young lad’s family and friends.

She told the Irish Sun: “I think it’s just support for the family and friends and everybody that was there that’s needed. That’s the most helpful at the moment is to do that, you know, just share our condolences.”

Junior Minister and Meath East TD Thomas Byrne said it was “devastating to hear of the tragic death”.

‘HEART GOES OUT TO FAMILY’

He added: “My heart goes out to his family, friends, all those who were around Laytown tonight, and all who are grieving.

“A summer moment has turned into an incalculable loss.”

Gardai said they were aware of videos of this incident in circulation but urged people not to share them.

It is the second such tragedy in a week after 17-year-old Peter Byrne died in the River Burrow on Tuesday.

The funeral for the young lad from Carlow town is due to take place on Monday morning.

Inside Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s 3-day Venetian wedding with star-studded guest list, $500m yacht, & unique gifts

BILLIONAIRE Jeff Bezos and fiancée Lauren Sanchez are preparing to tie the knot in a lavish three-day wedding in Venice next week.

The couple have remained tight-lipped about the upcoming nuptials but as the date nears, more details about the star-studded extravaganza have emerged.

The star-studded guest list will include the likes of Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, and Eva Longoria who attended Sanchez’s bachelorette in Paris[/caption]

The 61-year-old Amazon founder proposed to Sanchez, a former TV journalist, with a multi-million dollar ring on his yacht in May 2023.

Mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, confirmed in March that the popular Italian city would host the couple and their guests for the highly-anticipated ceremony.

He said the city was “extremely proud” the couple had chosen it for their wedding and called it “an honor that Bezos is coming to Venice”.

The happy couple appear to be keeping the celebration intimate with reports of around 200 guests being invited.

But that relatively small list is thought to include some big names including celebrities, politicians, and business moguls.

This is certainly the case if Sanchez’s star-studded Parisian bachelorette party is anything to go by.

The final hoorah before the “wedding of the century” was attended by the likes of Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Katy Perry, and Eva Longoria.

Multiple reports suggest stars including Leonardo Di Caprio, Orlando Bloom, Mick Jagger, and Beyoncé, are expected to attend as well as Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner.

The upcoming bash is said to be as extravagant as a royal wedding with Sanchez’s brother Paul telling TMZ it would “be like a Princess Di thing”.

“It’s gonna be an amazing event. It’s gonna be star-studded and fun,” he said.

The couples’ children from their previous marriages are also expected to be in attendance.

Bezos has four children with his ex-wife Mackenzie Scott and Sanchez has two children with her ex-husband Hollywood agent Patrick Whitesell and a son with ex-football player Tony Gonzalez.

Exact details for the celebrations have been kept under wraps but are believed to kick off on June 24 and end on June 26, a spokesperson for Brugnaro told CNN.

As preparations are underway, city officials told NBC News. that 30 water taxis out of 280 have been reserved and up to four hotels have been booked.

LIFE OF LUXURY

These are thought to be several luxury venues along the Grand Canal including the Belmond Hotel Cipriani, the Grand Aman Hotel, the St Regis Venis, and the Gritti Palace.

A room at The Aman, built in 1550, will set you back at least $2,700 per night, with prices going up to $10,000.

This is where the couple are said to be staying, per TMZ, as sources claim the entire hotel has been booked out from June 25 to June 29.

City officials added that “the celebrations, attended by 250 guests, will blend into the daily rhythm of a city”.

“Once again, Venice proves to be a world stage,” Brugnaro said.

The actual ceremony is reported to be taking place on Bezos’ $500 million yacht which will be in the Venetian lagoon, according to People.

Meanwhile, the whole island of San Giorgio Maggiore which lies opposite St Mark’s Square has reportedly been booked out.

A source told the Daily Mail that the whole island will be “off limits to visitors” from June 24 to June 29.

The power couple have also booked the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, a grand event building in the city’s historic center, per the outlet.

The couple are said to be using mainly local vendors to cater for the huge event.

Around 80 percent of the wedding is to be locally sourced including from Rosa Salva, the city’s oldest pastry maker and Laguna B, a studio famed for its hand-blown Murano glass.

Rosa Salva, which has been in business since 1876, has been asked to provide an array of surprises for goody bags , Antonio Rosa Salva revealed.

It is not known how Laguna B will contribute to the celebrations, with the business remaining tight-lipped.

One source told The Mail that a celebrity wedding planner not connected to the event has been told guests are being given “opulent” gifts just to attend.

The three-day celebrations could cost as much as $21 million, The Mail reported.

‘JUST BEGINNING’

The 55-year-old bride is thought to have taken on the majority of the organizing for the big day, as Sanchez previously told Today that she has been obsessively adding to her Pinterest board “like every other bride”.

“I’m very excited about it, thinking about the dress. I have to say, I do have a Pinterest. I’m just like every other bride,” she told Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb back in November.

“I never thought at 54 — I’m going to be 55 — that I’d be an author, that I’d be getting married. I mean, life is just beginning.”

Her billionaire husband-to-be told Vogue in 2023 that he would not have any involvement in the planning saying, “Oh, God no. Do I look that dumb?” when asked if he would be helping out.

As some locals launch protests against the wedding taking place in their city, officials have reassured them that they will not be adversely affected.

Fears are increasing among some Venetians that they are being priced out of their own city by tourism.

“The city is fully accustomed to hosting high-profile events of this nature and scale, including other celebrity weddings, international summits such as the G7 and G20, as well as traditional events like the Festa del Redentore and the Venice Biennale,” city hall officials told NBC.

“The celebrations, attended by 250 guests, will blend into the daily rhythm of a city that, with dignity and respect, welcomes thousands of visitors from around the world while safeguarding the quality of life for its residents, workers, and students.

“Protest initiatives are in no way representative of the majority of citizens, who are proud that Venice has been chosen as the wedding location”.
