AFTER moving to the UK, one American woman noticed a big cultural difference.
She revealed a common US habit that is considered to be “crass” by Brits.
An American woman living in the UK pointed out one of the biggeset cultural differences she has come acrossTikTok/@yorkshireyank
The TikTok user, know as Yorkshire Yank, often discusses the cultural quirks she has noticed between the two locations.
And while things such as tipping culture and humour are widely known to differ between the nationalities, there is another significant difference, according to the American.
Talking about money is something which the British and those living in the States approach in opposite ways.
“One thing that you’ll hear in the States is how much somebody paid for a house, or whatever,” the TikToker said.
She recalled how a friend of hers in the US spoke openly about how much she paid for her sofa and stove among other things during a “house tour”.
On the other hand, she pointed out how people in the UK tend to be a little more reserved when it comes to financial matters.
“Brits just don’t talk about differences in money because, honestly, it’s crass and why do I need to know how much your sofa cost? It’s like you’re bragging or something,” she explained.
The influencer went on to say that she thinks people in UK are “more mindful of others”.
According to her, Brits are aware that not everyone has the same things as them whereas most Americans tend to take a “Well, I have this and you don’t” approach.
Her British followers shared their thoughts on the observation in the comments section.
“We brag more about how cheap we got it. I’m a charity shop shopper,” said one viewer.
“Whereas in Britain you might tell me you like my dress and I’ll immediately brag about getting it on sale, or the pockets,” agreed another person.
“It’s not classy to talk about money, and I personally don’t want anyone to know my financial situation,” commented a third TikTok user.
“I don’t want people to borrow money or feel sorry for me because I don’t have any lol.”
“We don’t talk personal money in the UK. It’s just not on,” added another follower.
How easy is it to move abroad?
Brexit means British citizens now have to apply for visas to move to countries within the EU. While some countries residency restrictions are easier than others, here's what you need to do at home before moving:
Notify HMRC about your upcoming move.
Let your local authority know and provide a forwarding address.
Contact your mortgage and utility providers and bank before leaving.
If you have paid enough UK national insurance contributions, you can qualify for a state pension abroad – contact the International Pension Centre.

AIR India has been slammed for “repeated violations” with three officials sacked over “systemic failures” following the tragic crash.

All passengers and crew – except for one miracle survivor – died in the horror accident on June 12 which killed at least 270 people.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) urged Air India to remove three company executives from crew scheduling roles, it has been revealed.
The three officials include a divisional vice president, a chief manager of crew scheduling and one planning executive.
Their sacking relates to lapses linked to flights from Bengaluru to London on May 16 and May 17 that exceeded the stipulated pilot flight time limit of 10 hours.
The order on Friday cited “systemic failures in scheduling protocol and oversights” and criticised the lack of strict disciplinary measures against the officials.
Despite the latest action by the aviation authority against Air India being unrelated to this month’s tragic crash, it has laid bare the significant issues with the airline.
On Thursday, it was also brought to light that authorities previously warned the airline for breaching safety rules after three of its Airbus planes flew despite being overdue for checks on emergency equipment of escape slides.
The latest order by assistant director of operations at the DGCA, Himanshu Srivastava, said: “Of particular concern is the absence of strict disciplinary measures against key officials directly responsible.”
Air India said it has implemented the DGCA order and in the interim, the company’s chief operations officer will provide direct oversight to the Integrated Operations Control Centre.
The airline added: “Air India is committed to ensuring that there is total adherence to safety protocols and standard practices.”
The DGCA stated in its order that Air India had voluntarily disclosed the violations.
Investigators are continuing their probe into what caused the airline’s London-bound plane to plunge to the ground moments after takeoff in Ahmedabad.
The airline’s chief N Chandrasekaran also hit back at “speculation” on what caused the London-bound flight to crash a minute after take-off.
And it was revealed that the black box recovered from the flight could be sent to the US for analysis after being rescued from a blazing 1,000 degree inferno.
The Indian government has the final say on who probes the device, but reports say the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in Washington, D.C. is being considered for the analysis.
A team of Indian investigators is expected to accompany the device to ensure all protocols are followed during the advanced data extraction.
Investigators warned on Tuesday that the recovered black boxes may have melted due to the intense heat of the raging explosion.

Planes usually carry two black boxes, which are small but tough electronic flight data recorders.
One records flight data, such as altitude and speed, whilst the other monitors the cockpit sound.
The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR), were recovered 28 hours after the horror crash.
Despite the name, these devices are painted bright orange for visibility amid debris.
Investigators believe the CVR on this 2014-delivered aircraft likely stored only two hours of cockpit audio.
The jet predates a 2021 rule which enforced 25-hour recordings on all planes.
But the FDR is capable of logging thousands of flight parameters for over 25 hours, including altitude, airspeed, and control inputs.
The aircraft had climbed less than 600 feet before its ascent stalled, according to the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
A distress signal was sent but was met with complete radio silence.
Moments later, the plane crashed into the BJ Medical College hostel complex near the airport’s northeastern boundary.
The damaged black box is now seen as a crucial piece of evidence in understanding what led to India’s worst air disaster in nearly three decades.
Investigators hope the data from the box will shed light on the aircraft’s final moments.
52 Brits died on board the flight, but London local Vishwash Kumar Ramesh managed to cheat death when he escaped the blazing inferno following the crash.
THESE are some of the leading theories explaining the tragic Air India disaster which killed at least 270 people.
Emergency power system: A small turbine generator was seen deploying as the Boeing 787 went down, experts said.
Footage showed a “protrusion on the belly of the aircraft” with a “little grey dot” beneath it.
Commentators say this was a system called Ram Air Turbine (RAT) poking out from the fuselage of the plane.
Bird Strikes: A bird strike could have taken out both of the jet’s giant General Electric engines.
While a bird taking down something the size of a commercial airliner might sound fanciful, there are numerous examples.
Wing flap position: Aviation experts have suggested the position of the aircraft’s wing flaps could have played a role in the disaster.
Video evidence suggests the flaps were either fully retracted or on a very minimal setting, which would have provided very little lift.
The flaps provide crucial extra lift at low speeds during take-offs and landings.
Pilot error: The state-of-the-art Boeing 787-8 is highly automated, with human pilots making only key decisions – but human error cannot be ruled out.
Co-pilot Clive Kundar had more than 3,400 hours of flying experience and made the mayday call but Captain Sumeet Sabharwa at the helm had 11,500 hours – making him one of Air India’s most experienced pilots.
Heat: Planes get less lift on a hot day due to lower air density, and therefore they need to go faster to get as much lift as on a cooler day.
This is particularly important when an airliner is heavy with fuel, passengers and baggage, as the Air India flight was.
Technical error: Catastrophic technical or engineering issues have not been ruled out.
The jet’s complex design mean it could take months for a design or engineering fault to be pinpointed.

The defender was playing in his first match since the Champions League final, having turned down an Italy call-up.
Acerbi missed games against Norway and Moldova, as he felt “disrespected” by boss Luciano Spalletti, who has since resigned.
The 34-cap star wrote on Instagram: “It’s not a decision I have taken lightly. However, I believe that in light of recent events the conditions aren’t there today for me to go forward with serenity.
“I demand respect. If that respect is lacking from those who should lead the group, I prefer to step aside.
“I won’t stay where I’m no longer truly wanted and it’s clear I’m not part of the coach’s project.”
Spalletti subsequently resigned following an awful 3-0 defeat in Norway, with Gennaro Gattuso taking over.
Inter return to action this evening, as they face Japanese side Urawa Reds in Seattle.
They will then conclude their group stage campaign by taking on River Plate at the same venue on Wednesday.

The UK’s most stressful junctions have been ranked and rated – each infamous for causing numerous problems for motorists.
Scrap Car Comparison recently surveyed 1,000 UK drivers and asked them to rank road layouts based on feelings of confusion, anxiety, fear and confidence.
AlamyLondon’s Hanger Lane Gyratory tops the list as the UK’s most stressful junction, with its complex layout and high accident rate[/caption]
GettySwindon’s Magic Roundabout is a multi-mini roundabout system that confuses many but surprisingly boasts a strong safety record[/caption]
AlamyDrivers can navigate the Magic Roundabout’s central island in an anticlockwise direction, adding to its unique complexity[/caption]
These responses were then used to build a unique ‘Stress Score’ out of 100 – helping reveal the road layouts that most vehicle owners would rather avoid.
London’s mind-boggling Hanger Lane Gyratory came on top as the most stressful to navigate.
The gyratory – which is essentially a large, circular intersection – is located in the north of the Ealing borough in West London and serves as a major junction where the A40 (Western Avenue) and the A406 (North Circular Road) intersect, with the A40 passing underneath in a tunnel.
It also connects to Ealing Road towards Wembley.
Outrageously complex, the confusing layout boasts a high accident rate and often causes a bottleneck for traffic
At peak times, it’s known to take on some 10,000 vehicles per hour – making it not only very busy but also quite intimidating.
The infamous Magic Roundabout in Swindon followed closely behind in second place.
A multi-mini roundabout system, the roundabout – which gets its name from the popular British children’s television show, “The Magic Roundabout” – is made up of five mini roundabouts arranged in a circle around a central island.
Though the mini roundabouts are all driven in a standard clockwise movement, it is possible to navigate the central island in an anticlockwise direction.
But despite being wildly confusing, the Magic Roundabout boasts a surprisingly good safety record – with only 14 serious accidents and approximately 100 minor incidents over the last 25 years.
UK's top 10 most stressful junctions
Hanger Lane Gyratory – London (Stress Score: 44/100)
Scrap Car Comparison not only ranked the most stressful junctions in the UK but also created a global leaderboard, ranking some of the world’s most anxiety-inducing intersections.
For globe-trotting drivers, it might be best to avoid the Meskel Square Roundabout in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which picked up a Stress Score of 56 out of100.
Meskel Square lacks basic road markings and formal traffic control, relying instead on driver intuition… and honking.
Despite appearances, it’s functional for locals but is known for being deeply unnerving for outsiders.
The Judge Harry Pregerson Interchange in Los Angeles, a towering 8-level highway structure, came in close behind in second place with a score of 51/100.
This score was matched by Paris’ Arc de Triomphe roundabout, known for its 12 converging avenues and reversed right-of-way rules.
Indeed, Europe features heavily in the rankings – with five of the top ten most stressful junctions located across the continent – with Paris, Rome, Madrid and London all making the list.
Matt Clamp, Customer Service Manager at Scrap Car Comparison, said: “Driving through unfamiliar junctions can rattle even the most experienced motorists.
“Junctions often combine high traffic volumes, poor signage and confusing layouts, making preparation essential.
“Our advice? Start by planning ahead, tools such as Street View or route planners can help you visualise the road before you set off.
“Once you’re behind the wheel, try to get into the correct lane early by watching for signs and markings.
“If you start to feel overwhelmed, take a breath and don’t let other road users rush you – it’s perfectly okay to go at your own pace.
“Always signal clearly and confidently to show your intentions, especially if you need to change lanes.
“And if you’re really nervous, consider driving at quieter times of day when the roads are less busy.
“A little preparation can go a long way in turning a potentially stressful drive into a safe and confident journey.”
