Marc Guehi makes decision between Arsenal and Liverpool with England defender lined up for summer transfer

MARC GUEHI is prepared to turn down joining Arsenal this summer which has put Liverpool on high alert to swoop.

The Crystal Palace and England defender wants regular first-team football and assurances from boss Mikel Arteta that he will get it in the North London team.

But William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes would almost certainly start ahead of the 24-year-old if he was to move there.

With Liverpool selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen the club are on the lookout for a centre-back and sources say they are eyeing Guehi.

The defender does not want to be sitting on the bench with the World Cup coming up next summer and Liverpool could be the perfect fit.

Arsenal have just tied Gabriel down to a new contract running until 2029, while the Gunners top brass are also keen to extend Saliba’s stay at the Emirates.

The pair, who have formed the crux of the best defence in the league for two seasons, are seen as part of the long-term future at Arsenal and would likely be preferred as starters over Guehi.

Guehi featured 44 times for Crystal Palace last season, scoring three times helping the Eagles to earn a record Premier League points tally and lift the FA Cup.

While he has become a regular for the England national team in recent seasons, racking up 23 caps and standing out as one of the Three Lions’ top performers at Euro 2024.

Arsenal missed out on the signing of Dean Huijsen already this summer after the 20-year-old centre-back chose a switch to Real Madrid over joining Arteta’s ranks.

The Gunners remain focused on signings elsewhere in their squad too.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is already in London to finalise his Prem switch.

While the search for a striker continues with both Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko still of interest to the Gunners hierarchy.

Meanwhile 18-year-old rising star Myles Lewis-Skelly is reportedly on the brink of putting pen to paper on a new long-term deal to seal his future with the club too.

Peter is believed to have been swimming with friends when he got into difficulty in the river in the Milford area of the county – around eight kilometres from Carlow town.

The teen, who had just finished Transition Year in the local CBS secondary school, and his pals were at a local gym earlier in the evening.

It’s believed that they then decided to go swimming.

And Peter’s friend saw him get into difficulty in the water and tried to help him.

The emergency services, including the ambulance, fire brigade and Garda Water Unit, were called to the scene.

But sadly his body was recovered at about 11.30pm.

His remains will be reposing in his home in Carlow town from 1pm this Sunday, followed by prayers at 8pm that evening.

Peter’s funeral mass will take place on Monday, June 23, at 10am at The Cathedral of the Assumption, followed by burial at St Mary’s Cemetery.

The tragic teenager was a player for New Oak FC over the last number of years.

And heartfelt tributes have been paid to the young player on social media by family, friends and local community.

New Oak FC wrote on Facebook: “It is with a very heavy and broken heart that we share the devastating news of the passing of our much beloved youths player Peter Byrne who tragically passed away this week.

“Peter was a pocket rocket in the team over the last number of years.

“Small in stature but big in personality. He was a huge character with a touch of Roy Keane about him, not afraid of anything or anyone.”

A notice from RIP.ie said: “He will be sadly missed by his loving parents, step-father, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents, nephews, nieces, extended family, relatives and friends.”

Paying tribute, one local said: “Rest easy Peter, it’s all going to be so different without you. I hope you have the best bed up there.”

‘KINDEST SOUL’

Someone else wrote: “Rest in peace Peter, you have always been so sound to me from play school to primary.

“And even when I’d see you in the vault playing pool going to the vault and not seeing you there with your friends is truly heartbreaking.

“You were the nicest chap ever, rest in peace Peter and look over your friends and family.”

A heartbroken friend added: “Peter was genuinely the kindest soul who would always manage to brighten anyone’s day with a simple hello.

“His ability to make everyone laugh and smile was truly precious.

“And everyone will always remember him for this.

“And of course for his cheeky smile, that will be engraved in everyone’s memory until we meet again, you are a true legend.

“The brightest smile in the town to the brightest star in the sky. I’ll miss you so much Peter.”

A NEW ‘Ozempic pill’ leads to faster weight loss than the popular ‘skinny jabs’, studies have suggested.

The new weight loss medication, which can also be offered by injection, can help patients lose a significant amount of weight.

The new weight loss pill has seen promising results in early trials[/caption]

An early study found that patients who received amycretin as a weekly jab lost 24% of their body weight after 36 weeks of treatment.

But initial trials assessing a tablet form of the jab saw promising results with patients losing an average 13% of bodyweight in just three months.

This suggests the drug leads to greater weight loss than Wegovy, the ‘sister jab’ of Ozempic.

Such treatments have been called transformative by NHS leaders.

It’s estimated that around 1.5 million Brits currently receive weight loss jabs through specialist weight loss services or private prescriptions.

But weight pills offer a new hope to millions looking to lose weight as the injections put additional pressure on an overstretched NHS.

However, further clinical trials are needed before the treatment can be made available in the UK.

This could take several years and there’s no guarantee that regulators will approve the use of the drug.

Amycretin, made by Novo Nordisk, contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Ozempic and Wegovy and helps control blood sugar and appetite.

It targets specific receptors in the body – the GLP-1 and amylin receptors – helping you feel full and stops overeating.

An early trial published in The Lancet found that 125 adults taking weekly injections containing higher doses of the drug lost nearly a quarter of their body weight after 36 weeks.

It also showed signs of improving blood sugar levels.

However, there were some mild to moderate side effects including nausea and vomiting but these were resolved by the end of the treatment.

Experts said that the medicine appeared “safe and tolerable” but further studies were needed to fully assess the drug.

But a second trial, also published in The Lancet, assessed the drug in tablet form in 144 people.

Those taking the highest dose of 100mg lost 13% of their body weight over four months.

The authors wrote: “Amycretin effectively lowered body weight and improved metabolic and glycaemic parameters in people who were overweight or obese.

“Longer studies with more participants are warranted for evaluation of the safety and efficacy of amycretin in individuals living with obesity and type 2 diabetes, and to optimise the dosing regimen.”

As with the first trial, there were also some mild to moderate side effects including loss of appetite and similar gastrointestinal issues.

It comes as a separate study examined the effects of the weight-loss jab, Wegovy, at higher doses.

The researchers found that giving patients 7.2mg of Wegovy once a week led to an average weight loss of 21%, with a third of participants losing 25% of their body weight over 72 weeks.

The studies were also presented to the American Diabetes Association’s Scientific Sessions in Chicago.

But now, luckily for those feeling hot and bothered, here are four easy hacks you won’t want to miss.

Thanks for these handy tips, you’ll be able to beat the heat with barely any effort or cash involved, making them great for those on a budget.

Not only have the experts shared a simple trick that will reduce your body temperature in an instant, but there’s also a piece of advice that will ensure you have the best night sleep on even the warmest of evenings – yes, you heard that correctly.

Posting on social media, an expert at EarthKind, a luxury and sustainable bedding company, revealed four “easy steps to stay cool this summer.”

The first step is all about your hygiene habits and it appears that hot showers are now out of the question.

The pro advised: “Take a shower 20 to 15 minutes before you go to sleep to cool down your body temperature.”

Next up, the sleep guru shared how a flannel could be the answer to sleepless summer nights.

The pro suggested: “Take a flannel and run it under some cold water – this can be used to dab your face throughout the night to cool you down or as a cold compress on your head.”

Not only this, but it’s also important to ensure sunlight doesn’t invade your home where possible.

“Make sure all your blinds are down so the sunlight does not warm up your bedroom,” the expert stressed.

Finally, the EarthKind employee shared her “favourite” piece of advice for hot sleepers.

Not only will it change how you make your bed, but it’ll work in just 10 minutes too.

How to keep cool in hot weather

Most of us welcome hot weather, but when it's too hot, there are health risks. Here are three ways to keep cool according to the NHS...

Keep out of the heat if you can.

If you have to go outside, stay in the shade especially between 11am and 3pm, wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothes, and avoid exercise or activity that makes you hotter.

Cool yourself down.

Have cold food and drinks, avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks, and have a cool shower or put cool water on your skin or clothes.

Keep your living space cool.

Close windows during the day and open them at night when the temperature outside has gone down. Electric fans can help if the temperature is below 35 degrees. Check the temperature of rooms, especially where people at higher risk live and sleep.

She beamed: “Take your pillowcase and put them in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes and trust me, you will have the best night sleep with these hacks.”

The TikTok clip, which was posted on the official @earthkinduk account has clearly impressed many, as it has quickly racked up 112,300 views.
