Iconic compact convertible hinted at return after 20 years away – and could compete with the Mazda MX-5

AN ICONIC convertible could be returning to the road – some 20 years after it was discontinued.

Better yet, the compact roadster might produce some fair competition for the world’s most popular little convertible, the Mazda MX-5.

According to Auto Express, Smart has left the door open for the return of the Smart Roadster – with the brand preparing a successor for its famous ForTwo city car.

Indeed, back in March, we reported on how the much-loved ForTwo – the quintessential ‘park anywhere’ city car of the noughties – is being considered for a comeback in the coming years after being pulled from the market last year.

That could spell good news for the Roadster model too, a two-door, two-seater convertible that was Smart’s sports car offering at the time.

Introduced back in 2003, it was widely respected for its balanced mid-engined layout – with iconic F1 designer Gordon Murray a famous fan who used the Roadster as his daily driver.

The model was ultimately discontinued in November 2005, with just over 43,000 units produced.

In a recent interview, Smart UK CEO Jason Allbutt talked fondly about the Roadster, saying: “We used to have one of those in the family, and [it was] particularly good fun.

“For a country that has more rain than probably any other European market, we are lovers of coupés and roadsters.

“So yes, I could see a possibility for such a car in the UK.”

Allbutt did however reiterate that nothing is concrete and that the brand currently focussed on the launch of its biggest model yet – the all-new Smart #5 SUV – with an electric family hatchback called Smart #6 to follow.

ELECTRIC FEEL

As the industry continues to transition into electric power, several marques are lining up all-electric sports cars to replace their ICE counterparts.

An electric version of the universally acclaimed Alpine A110 is already in the pipeline, while Porsche is rumoured to be lining up some kind of Boxster/Cayman EV.

Meanwhile, Lotus are waiting for battery tech to catch up – especially in terms of weight – before drawing up an exciting electric sequel to the Elise.

Even the aforementioned MX-5 is being earmarked for an electric replacement in the coming years.

But according to Auto Express, Allbutt appears to have reservations about whether petrolheads are ready to embrace electric convertibles.

Smart Roadster history

  • First introduced in 2002
  • 43,091 produced between August 2002 and November 2005
  • Produced in Hambach, France
  • Created following Smart’s “reduce to the max” philosophy
  • Coupe and Roadster introduced in 2002 were designed to be reminiscent of classic British roadsters like the Triumph Spitfire and MG B
  • Roadster was powered by a 45 or 60kW version of the turbocharged 698cc 3-cylinder Suprex engine in the rear
  • Roadster Coupe had the more powerful 60kW option only
  • Car weighed as little as 790kg – creating the emotion of driving a sports car at an affordable cost
  • Awarded Fun Car Of The Year by Top Gear in 2005

He said: “I think a lot of people that drive these cars historically have been traditional car enthusiasts.

“Part of the joy of having the roof down, in case you have less hair to be ruffled nowadays, is also to hear the sound of the engine.

“Maybe there’s a new audience that would be looking at [an electric roadster] in a different way. I’m not quite sure yet as to who the buyers of that car really are.

“It’s too early to tell right now, but we’ll see.”

Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury enjoy day out with her mum Debbie amid family feud

MOLLY-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury have enjoyed a day out with her mum Debbie amid claims of a family feud.

The Love Island alum, 26 – who recently confirmed she and the boxer, also 26, had rekindled their romance was also out with their daughter Bambi aged two.

Debbie had allegedly said that the reunion would end in tears[/caption]

In February pals told The Sun that the Hague family, including Molly’s dad Stephen and mum Debbie Gordon, were “horrified” that Tommy was back on the scene.

“Molly-Mae’s closest friends and members of her family think this is a terrible idea and that it is all going to end in tears again,” the source said.

The reconciliation has also infuriated Molly’s older sister, Zoe, who has been vocal about her fears for Molly’s future and how she believes Tommy’s issues with alcohol could cause problems again.

And that in turn has allegedly rubbed Tommy’s family, including boxer brother Tyson and his wife Paris, up the wrong way.

However, the couple have firmly put that rumour of her feud with her mother to sleep – following their day out with Debbie.

Mother and daughter were both dressed in stylish black outfits paired off with sunglasses.

While Tommy wore a CrossFit T-shirt, grey shorts and sliders.

It comes days after Molly-Mae posted an emotional tribute to baby-daddy Tommy gushing he was “made to be a dad” following the pair’s reunion.

Following the launch of her latest Maebe fashion collection, the mum of one took to her Stories to upload a snap showing Tommy‘s celebratory cake emblazoned with the phrase: “Love you daddy.”

It sat perched on a table filled with images of him and Bambi, as well as a piece of painting art created by the tot.

The influencer then shared a black and white snapshot showing daddy and daughter cuddling in bed, with Molly-Mae posting a sweet message alongside it which read: “You are the most patient, calm, kind and loving daddy ever.

“Watching the way you love our little girl is one of my favourite things in the world … it’s completely unconditional.

“You were truly made to be a dad. Happy Father’s Day.”

The Filter tan brand founder – who split briefly with Tommy last year – then posted a candid snap showing the trio in bed.

Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury - Reunion Clues

MOLLY-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury are on holiday in Dubai after splitting in August. Yet have they dropped clues about their reunion before?

Molly-Mae Hague and Tommy Fury appear to have confirmed their romance is back on with a joint holiday to Dubai.

Yet in January, the rumour mill had already started turning on their reunion after pics of Molly-Mae’s NYE snog with the boxer resurfaced

In February, Tommy, 25, then gushed how “life has been looking up” after the pair’s romantic getaway for Valentine’s Day.

The Sun exclusively revealed how the pair were spotted “canoodling” on their cute getaway.

During the same month, Tommy was also spotted leaving Molly-Mae’s Molly Maison home in his G Wagon in the early hours.

Fans then spotted clues the pair had spent another romantic weekend together earlier this spring.

Molly-Mae was also heard discussing having a second baby on her vlog, in yet another potential sign they are giving their romance another go.

Bambi was seen snuggling up to her dad, who was fast asleep.

Recently the little family also enjoyed a getaway to a stunning Cotswolds retreat.

The family stayed at the luxury Estelle Manor, where rooms start from £700-a-night.

Molly-Mae’s images at the time showed off the venue’s amazing pool area and some of the views.

The couple split up last summer but shared a New Year’s Eve kiss and then headed off on a loved-up trip for Valentine’s Day last month.

After months of keeping fans guessing, last month Molly gave her followers an update on her and Tommy.

The couple then revealed they have rekindled their romance and make things official during the recent part of Molly-Mae’s Amazon docuseries later last month.

During episode six, Molly revealed that she and Tommy were back on.

In January, Tommy revealed his battle with booze was behind their break-up.

‘Gamechanger’ €500m home retrofit loan scheme barely used by public as urgent ‘need to fix it’ alert issued to Minister

A LOW cost loan scheme to enable people to retrofit their homes has been dramatically underused.

Just €17 million out of the €500 million scheme has been drawn down, The Irish Sun can reveal.

The Home Energy Upgrade Loan Scheme was launched last year by then Climate Minister Eamon Ryan.

It gives people the opportunity to take out a loan of between €5,000 and €75,000 at as low as 2.99 per cent to carry out energy upgrades to their property.

The former Green Party leader hailed the scheme a “gamechanger” after spending months negotiating with the European Investment Bank and Irish lending institutions to come on board.

However, new figures obtained by The Irish Sun show that since the programme was launched in April 2024 just 355 loans have been approved worth a combined €17million – almost €48,000 on average.

The low uptake has raised concerns that the scheme is too complex for people to access.

Fine Gael TD Grace Boland urged new Energy Minister Darragh O’Brien to cut the red tape and help get access to the cash more quickly.

She told The Irish Sun: “The uptake of the scheme is far too low — and the Minister and Department need to fix it.

“When people either don’t know about the scheme or find the process too complex and frustrating, we risk falling short.

“Most people want warmer, more energy-efficient homes — but we have to make it easier for them to get the work done.”

Homeowners can apply for these loans through financial institutions, with all three pillar banks on board, along with Avant Money and seven credit unions.

In order to get access to the loans, homeowners must use an SEAI approved ‘One Stop Shop’ contractor — with only 24 such businesses listed on their website.

Another requirement that may be blocking access for homeowners is a rule that requires any upgrade under the scheme to achieve a minimum 20 per cent improvement in BER rating.

This would rule out any smaller energy projects.

The Department of Climate said they are working with banks to promote the scheme and encourage take-up.
