Chris Nolan inspires Carlow to historic win over Waterford in Division 1B hurling league as Antrim beat Westmeath
CHRIS NOLAN was the goal hero as CARLOW claimed their first-ever competitive win over WATERFORD to blow the promotion race in Division 1B wide open.
Nolan scored goals at either end of the game as Carlow stunned the Munster side, 2-21 to 1-19.
Nolan’s early goal helped Carlow into a 1-3 to 0-0 lead after just four minutes and Waterford simply could not find a way to get on top.
They trailed by 1-10 to 0-9 at half-time, but points from Conor Sheahan and Pádraig Fitzgerald were followed by a Seán Walsh goal.
Instead of folding, Carlow rallied with a string of Marty Kavanagh frees, along with scores from Jack McCullagh, Ciarán Whelan and Paddy Boland.
And Nolan’s late low drive sealed victory.
With Offaly winning in Portlaoise, Waterford will now be looking nervously at ANTRIM, who were full value for their 2-25 to 1-19 victory over WESTMEATH.
James McNaughton hit 1-14 for Antrim, while David Williams replied with 0-12 at Corrigan Park in Belfast as Davy Fitzgerald secured his first competitive win as Saffrons manager.
