THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

Separately, Dunnes Stores designers have dropped more summer items – and they make the perfect festival look.

An Irish shopper has taken to social media to share a look at the new must-have items.

Emer, who posts under the username @arlolnyrd on Instagram, shared a picture showing off her fabulous outfit from Dunnes Stores for a concert gig.

She revealed the stunning outfit consisting of the Gallery Athena Mesh Skirt, the bargain Savida Bailey Tassel Waistcoat, a black top, a pair of Birkenstocks and sunglasses.

And it’s perfect for festivals and outdoor events during summer.

Talking to The Irish Sun, Emer said: “Beautiful long pink tiered tulle skirt €30 can be dressed up or down very light and a statement piece. I got so many questions on it.

“Soft faux leather fringed cropped waistcoat €15.

‘ON TREND’

“Dunnes styling lately absolutely on trend.”

The Gallery Athena Mesh Skirt is priced at €30 and comes in a gorgeous light baby pink.

It comes with an elasticated waist and a comfortable lining, combining comfort and luxury into one.

Dunnes Stores chiefs said this skirt will “bring some individuality to your wardrobe” if you’re feeling adventurous.

Shoppers can bag it in sizes 8 to 18 in stores only, as it is no longer available to purchase online.

The bargain Savida Bailey Tassel Waistcoat is priced at €15, reduced from €30.

It is crafted from a high-shine faux leather and boasts a clean, streamlined shape perfect for layering.

The waistcoat also comes with all-over tassels, making a fashion statement piece for a festival or night out with the girls in town.

Fashion fans can pick it up in sizes XXS to XXL online and in stores nationwide.

Hong Kong’s dystopian ‘coffin homes’ where 200,000 live in tiny boxes with barely enough space for a bed amid high rents

HONG Kong residents crammed into so-called coffin homes sleep on tiny beds which fill entire rooms without enough space for luggage.

More than 200,000 people in Hong Kong, China, are forced to endure cramped, squalid conditions – living in tiny box-like homes with barely a few feet of personal space.

The former British colony has topped the list for the world’s most unaffordable city for the 14th year running.

And it also suffers one of the worst inequality rates on the planet.

Its subdivided flats, barely big enough to squeeze in a double bed, have become notorious for eye-watering rents.

Last week, YouTuber Drew Binsky, 34, shared shocking footage from inside one of the cramped properties.

After witnessing the horrifying conditions, he dubbed it the “sad reality of life in HK”.

He revealed that tenants are coughing up around £217 a month for a space in a flat packed with 26 box-sized “coffin homes”.

Astonishing footage showed a man lying in his makeshift cubicle, surrounded by belongings stuffed against the walls and spilling across his narrow bed.

A tiny TV sits at the foot of one resident’s bed, almost completely buried under a tangled mess of wires and plugs.

The exterior appears nearly entirely derelict, with many of the so-called homes wedged into crumbling tower blocks in run-down business districts.

Over the years, many photographers have captured the shocking scenes within the minuscule pads.

Each pod measures just 15 to 18 square feet, barely enough room to lie down and stash belongings.

The airless, windowless cells leave tenants with a severe lack of ventilation during seasons of sweltering heat.

Many try to alleviate this problem by keeping their flimsy sliding doors open, sacrificing any shred of privacy.

Residents also have to share filthy, bug-infested toilets with dozens of neighbours.

The stench of damp and decay is also potent when living inside the cramped cells.

These cramped homes are a world away from the luxury enjoyed by Hong Kong’s upper and even middle class, who live in mountaintop mansions or even standard flats.

“Coffin homes” have long attracted the international media spotlight as a symbol of the city’s failed housing policies.

The living spaces are a symbol of the city’s inequality[/caption]

But Hong Kong officials have pledged to phase out the infamous “coffin homes” by 2049.

They have set new rules on minimum living space and safety standards for subdivided flats.

Local authorities said they have identified enough land to build 308,000 public housing units over the next decade.

Since July 2022, around 49,000 people have been moved into public rental housing, with another 18,400 units of temporary accommodation made available as a short-term fix.

Hong Kong was also known for its sprawling fortress which was once the most crowded city on Earth.

With some 50,000 people crammed into a few blocks of concrete jungle, Kowloon Walled City was an ungoverned place plagued by lawlessness.

The city was a wonder in itself – with thousands of families and businesses housed in some 300 interconnected high-rise buildings across 6.4 acres of land.

Haunting pictures showed the grim reality of the concrete jungle, which existed as a Chinese territory, with narrow tower blocks packed tight against each other.

The astonishing scenes echo living standards in Manila, where slums are among the most tightly packed in the world.

Extraordinary aerial images shed light on just how crowded the shanty towns really are in the Philippines capital.

Beauty & The Geek star, 34, pictured ‘topless in wedding veil’ in strange stunt days before arrest over partner’s murder

A BEAUTY & The Geek star was reportedly pictured standing half-naked in a wedding veil just days before she was arrested over her partner’s murder.

The TV star, 34, is said to have performed the bizarre stunt just days before police found a corpse when responding to a small fire at the couple’s shared property in Port Lincoln, Australia.

Local cops immediately arrested the reality star in South Australia‘s Eyre Peninsula after finding the man’s body at the blazing house.

The Beauty & The Geek contestant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with murder shortly after she was taken into custody on Thursday.

It is understood she had moved in with the man just a few months prior to the shocking alleged murder.

Eerie footage has now surfaced reportedly showing the accused killer standing topless at the Port Lincoln war memorial while wearing a white wedding dress-style veil.

The creepy video showed the woman standing motionless and silent at the Garden of Remembrance while holding what appeared to be a sharp object.

A horrified bystander recorded the strange ordeal after noticing the TV show contestant’s haunting behaviour, 7News reported.

Neighbour Jody Miller told the outlet he was one of the first people on scene attempting to put out the fire – while unaware that there was a corpse inside.

He said: “It’s devastating.

“This doesn’t happen in a small town like Port Lincoln.”

He added that he had seen the woman before and told how she was in a relationship with the alleged victim.

“She seemed normal, she was good,” he explained.

Details of the case cannot be revealed for legal reasons, but cops said the burned up home is a complicated scene.

Authorities continue to gather evidence from within the pad, and police are still piecing together the woman’s movements before the man’s death.

Assistant Commissioner Ian Parrott said on Friday that a cause of death had not yet been determined.

And he said that the dead man’s family had not yet been notified.

He said: “There is a range of things at the scene that need to be worked through.

“It is a very complex scene.”

The woman is expected to return to court in December.

The social experiment programme brings together attractive women with nerdy men in a mansion.

Another contestant who won the show in 2021 posted online to clarify with those speculating that she was in no way connected to the case.

Kiera Johnstone said on social media about the man’s death: “Although no names have been released, for reasons beyond my understanding, there has been speculation online suggesting that I am involved.

“Let me be absolutely clear: I am not involved in any way. I have not been charged with a crime.”

She added: “As this has nothing to do with me, this will be the only time I speak on the matter.

“Thank you to those who reached out with kindness and common sense.”

Shocking Abuse Case in Samut Prakan: Teacher Chanaphon Konduang Under Investigation

In a distressing series of events unfolding within the peaceful bounds of Samut Prakan, a male teacher is under scrutiny for allegedly committing unspeakable acts against his students. The situation has shaken the local community to its core, as a 31-year-old mother has courageously stepped forward with a harrowing account of what her son, Pae, has endured. Accompanied by his mother, Pae made his way to the Phra Samut Chedi Police Station to report the vile abuse he suffered. His chilling testimony exposed that he was merely one victim in a string of others, revealing that the teacher, later identified as Chanaphon Konduang, proudly displayed photographs and videos of multiple students. The events traced back to a seemingly innocuous invitation on June 13, when Chanaphon promised Pae a brand-new mobile phone in exchange for a visit to his residence at Suksawat-Chulachomklao Fort. Pae recounted the unnerving day when he rode…
