Ireland’s most popular cheap and FREE outdoor swim spots from heated €3 pools to riverside dips and scenic sea plunges

DRYROBES became a Covid-19 trademark, while Sharon Horgan and her Bad Sisters crew put one of Dublin’s favourite swim spots on the international map.

With outdoor swimming part of the Irish psyche for decades and temperatures rising, we take a look at the best places to take a dip this summer.

We take a look at top swim spots across Ireland[/caption]

With schools closed for the next few weeks, parents and children across the country are looking for the ideal place to spend a day in the sun.

And while the beach, a forest, or a theme park are all popular options, the number of top swimming spots in Ireland is on the rise.

From indoor to outdoor, and temperate to heated, the family-friendly places are in every county.

Here are some of Ireland’s most popular swimming spots that you can visit, many of them are free while prices for others start at just €3.

Clontarf Seawater Pool, Dublin

The Clontarf Outdoor Seawater Pool, which dates back to 1886, was refurbished in 2018 at a cost of €2.4million.

It is 40 meters long at its longest point and 25 meters wide.

The attraction was previously only available to members of local swimming clubs, but is now available for all to use.

Sessions are available from just €10 but swimmers will need to pre-book online.

The pool also offers a safe and sheltered alternative to anyone who enjoys seawater swimming.

Best of all, it’s open seven days a week.

The Forty Foot, Dublin

In suburban murder mystery Bad Sisters, Sharon Horgan has arguably captured the beauty of Dublin's coastal towns better than any other filmmaker in recent memory. Filming across Malahide and Skerries in the north and iconic sea-swimming spot The Forty Foot in the south, she zones in on the parts of the city most tourists miss out on. She ground her story – about four sisters who band together to murder their siblings' abusive husband – in these outer-city areas where real life happens. With an undoubtedly healthy Apple TV+ behind them and some fortunate breaks in the rain – they filmed much of the series in late Summer last year – the camera crew managed to make Ireland's capital look nearly as appealing as Big Little Lies' Monterey.

It ended up serving as inspiration for the composition of a song by Bono and the Edge called 40 Foot Man featured in the credits of show.

Other stars such as Matt Damon and Sam Smith have also visited the spot while in Ireland.

A major €20,000 grant was secured by DLR Sports Partnership last year to upgrade the popular location.
