Dramatic moment disqualified driver leads cops on 80mph police chase before trying to flee on foot

THIS is the dramatic moment cops chased a disqualified driver who was racing at speeds of up to 80mph before he tried to flee on foot.

Charley Lance, 24, led police on a dangerous high speed chase through the town of Harwich, Essex, before being pinned down by PC Johnny Lee.

Incredible footage shows police in hot pursuit of Lance as he races through the town at around 4.45pm on November 13, 2024.

Sirens can be heard blaring as the cops continue chasing down Lance, with one officer saying: “It’s gonna be a decamp.”

As Lance’s motor comes to a screeching halt, PC Lee’s colleague can be heard asking him to “get after” the dangerous driver.

PC Lee can then be seen jumping out of the patrol car as it comes to a stop before he breaks into a sprint, chasing after Lance on foot.

As he gains on the dangerous driver, PC Lee can be heard exclaiming: “Officer with a taser,” warning Lance of his weapon.

After a quick chase, Lance appears to stumble on the grass, falling to the floor and allowing PC Lee to reach him with ease.

Shouting, the copper orders Lance to “stay where you are” as he lands the criminal in cuffs.

Sirens of PC Lee’s colleagues can then be heard getting closer in the background as the officer informs Lance of the nature of his arrest.

Then, the policeman raises Lance off the floor and begins walking him back to his patrol car.

For his shocking and dangerous behaviour, Lance was charged with, and later admitted to, dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance.

He was sentenced to 13 months in prison.

PC Lee said: “We knew we had to bring his dangerous driving to an end and when his vehicle came to stop, I knew the only thing to do was to catch him on foot.

“Thankfully, he didn’t get too far, and I was able to make the arrest.

“We can’t accept behaviour like this. He put himself and the public in harm’s way by driving dangerously through Harwich.

The officer added: “I’m just glad we were able to catch up with him.

“As response officers, it’s only through working together – often making very quick decisions – that we’re able to keep Tendring safe and ultimately catch people who are causing harm in our neighbourhoods.”

Brits could be slapped with higher fares just to get to hospital under new ‘Taxi Tax’

BRITS could be slapped with higher fares just to get to hospital under a new “Taxi Tax”, campaigners warn.

Campaigners say a 20 per cent VAT hike on minicabs would “price many out of vital journeys” and cost the NHS tens of millions each year.

CEO of Disability Rights UK Kamran Mallick said: “For many disabled people, private hire vehicles are not a luxury, they are essential.

“They provide a vital means of transport where public options are inaccessible or unreliable.”

Polling for the Stop the Taxi Tax campaign found 53 per cent of disabled people or those with long-term health conditions used minicabs or ride-hailing apps to attend medical appointments in the past year.

And Bolt data shows a 62 per cent jump in trips to Birmingham Children’s Hospital since January 2023, with sharp rises in Nottingham and London too.

A spokesperson for the Stop the Taxi Campaign, said: “The NHS’ own figures show how vital minicabs and PHVs are for helping patients access medical appointments.

“Increasing fares won’t just make life harder for disabled and vulnerable people, it will put even more strain on stretched NHS budgets and potentially cost the health service tens of millions of pounds.”

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is under growing pressure to block the charge, which follows a High Court ruling that could force operators to add VAT to every fare.

Previously, most minicab drivers were classed as self-employed and didn’t meet the £90,000 threshold for VAT – but the court ruled operators are the ones providing the service, meaning VAT could now apply across the board.

Leading trade bodies – including the Federation of Small Businesses – warn the change could force 25,000 drivers off the road and hammer already-struggling high streets.

The Treasury says it is still reviewing responses to its consultation.

Major railway station used by 100,000 each year set to close for 10 months for upgrade works

A MAJOR railways station used by 100,000 passengers each year is set to close for 10 months for improvement works.

No trains will run from Ty Glas station in Cardiff station until spring 2026, Transport for Wales said.

Improvements will include five new, quieter Class 756 tri-mode trains rolled out on the Croyton and Caerphilly to Penarth lines and a new level crossing at the station.

During the works, passengers will be directed to nearby Birchgrove station where they can seek alternative routes.

While those needing to cross the railway will be diverted towards the Caerphilly Road bridge.

The improvement works form part of the Welsh government’s £800 million investment in new trains across the country.

Dan Tipper, chief infrastructure officer at Transport for Wales, said: “The temporary closure of Ty Glas station and its level crossing is a necessary step in our commitment to ensuring the safety of our passengers as we prepare to introduce brand-new tri-mode trains onto the Coryton line.

Further details, including diversion routes, are available on the authority’s website.

This comes as it was announced that no trains will run through or stop at Huddersfield station in West Yorkshire between August 30 and September 29.

The works are set to spark travel chaos for the roughly 300,000 travellers who use the station each month.

After the closure, just three of the six current platforms will reopen on a temporary basis.

This is to allow for work on the multibillion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) to continue.

Gareth Hope, TRU sponsor, said the scheme would be “key to improving the journeys of millions of people across the north.”

Network Rail says the closure will allow developers to remodel the track and platforms.

This change will “transform the layout of the station and enable more trains with more seats to run through the area on a greener, more reliable railway”.

The works will also enable future upgrades at the busy station to take place, including the restoration of its Grade II listed tea rooms.

A new footbridge is also planned to be installed at West Yorkshire’s second busiest station in the future, as part of its £70 million internal modernisation project.

Huddersfield station has already completed some of its restorative work, which began in November 2023, with the terminus’ canopy roof having its refurbishment finished up in April.

The station’s modernisation programme is due to be complete by 2027.
