Inside UK’s BIGGEST red phone box graveyard full of 70 rusting kiosks abandoned next to train line – and why it exists

EERIE snaps from the UK’s biggest red phone box graveyard reveal rows of rusting kiosks.

The chilling snaps show the 70 rotting booths stood next to the abandoned train line, but the graveyard hides a heartwarming secret.

When mobile phones became popular, phone booths fell out of fashion and many fell into disrepair.

Left to decay, the 70 kiosks in Merstham, Surrey, are a sinister sight.

However, the kiosks are actually part of a massive restoration project.

Unicorn Restorations use the site to bring the boxes – which are a beloved national symbol – back to their former glory.

The site’s hardworking staff spend 30 hours on each box, stripping them down and repainting them in the General Post Office’s iconic red

New glass is installed in the phone booths’ doors to finish off the restoration.

There are also three different models of red telephone booths, including the original K2, the famous K6 and the modern K8.

The K6 boxes were designed in 1935 to mark King George V’s silver jubilee and, at one point, 60,000 of the boxes were in use across Britain.

Often the boxes are used in films to create quintessentially British sets.

Film franchises including Harry Potter, Paddington and Disney’s Christopher Robin are just a few famous productions to use Unicorn Restorations.

The booths are available to buy too and are priced from £4000 to £20,000.

Nicolas Ritter, a professional photographer, recalled visiting the yard back in 2012.

He said: “Being at the telephone graveyard was a great experience for me. It felt like a journey back into the history of the country as the phone boxes are such a unique symbol of British culture.

“Viewing this museal location now after the beginning of a new age of communication the phone graveyard bears a mystic vibe of a past era.”

The news comes as plans are made for an iconic steam train to return to the nation’s rails.

The 60163 Tornado will travel from London Waterloo towards Woking and Basingstoke from August 16.

It will follow the route of the classic ACE trains which travelled along the South West coast.

Kelly Osborne, managing director of The Railway Touring Company, said: “We are delighted to be working with the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust to provide opportunities for people from Woking and Basingstoke to travel with Tornado and for many more to see the locomotive in action.

“It is very exciting that Tornado will be back on the national rail network.”

Stephen Bradley and Alan Reynolds speak out on Damien Duff’s dramatic departure from Shelbourne

STEPHEN BRADLEY said he has not tried to contact Damien Duff since his shock resignation – and if they do speak, it will remain private.

The Shamrock Rovers boss and ex-Shelbourne gaffer, who quit on Sunday, previously worked together and were on friendly terms until this season when there was a public falling out.

So too did Alan Reynolds in spite of their previous clashes

But Bradley insisted that any future thawing of their relationship will be done away from the media glare.

He said: “That’s between me and Damien. When we were in it, it’s about he will do everything to win for his team and I will do everything to win for my team.

“And that will never change. There was lots in it, but that’s not for me to talk about right now.

“I am sad to see him leave Shelbourne and the league as a whole.

“He’s obviously a very good manager and coach, he’s a good person and he is and was very, very good for the league.

“Sad to see him go and hopefully he comes back in the league at some point.

“Look, I’m sure he has his reasons for making the decision, you’ve got to respect that.”

Bohemians boss Alan Reynolds – who also fell out with Duff last year with the pair not shaking hands before any of their last four meetings – also felt he is a big loss for Shels.

Reynolds said: “I don’t know the ins and outs of it but I’m disappointed.

“He’s been fantastic for the league, to go win a title after only a few years as new manager.

“I don’t think people realise the pressure of managing. It’s 24/7. You go away from the ground losing a game and there’s no feeling like it.

“You try to describe to people how you’ve put in some much, it’s 24/7 all of the time and it has an effect.

“I’m just disappointed because I thought he was fantastic for the league and he’s a good manager.

“We have had our different views and not a great relationship. We don’t know each other but I’d still admire him from a distance.”

EastEnders exit revealed as star is axed from soap after eight years

EASTENDERS shock exit for Bernie Taylor has been revealed after actress Clair Norris was axed from the soap.

The actress – who has played Bernie for eight years in the BBC soap – was told her contract would not be renewed earlier this year after new boss Ben Wadey took over the show.

Bernie’s time in Walford is rapidly running out[/caption]

She faces down Ravi – but will he realise what she’s done?[/caption]

Viewers next week will see Bernie exposed as a thief who has been stealing from the Panesar family after late killer Nish gave her control in his will.

Vicki Fowler will attempt to blackmail her for some of the skimmed cash – as Bernie’s cousin Felix also warns her to be careful.

And when Priya and Ravi start to suspect Bernie’s abilities to run the Panesar accounts aren’t quite there, Suki is adamant she’s up to the job.

Later, Kathy tells Suki that Bernie has stolen money from the accounts, and Priya tells Ravi who intervenes by requesting an audience with Bernie at No.41.

Realising she has nowhere to hide, Bernie tells Ravi, Priya and Suki that Vicki is the one responsible for her crime.

However Ravi and Priya aren’t convinced and enlist Vinny into finding out the truth.

Actress Clair recently teased her exit from Walford – teasing Bad Bernie’s return.

She said: “My exit is very Bernie, and it’s back to bad Bernie.

“It’s very dramatic, and must-watch, I’ve already filmed my exit and it will play out later this summer.”

Clair also recently told The Sun about her plans after she has closed the EastEnders chapter in her life.

She said: “My plan is to work out what I want to do. EastEnders is the only thing I’ve ever done, so all I know is soap.

“I came from college and went straight into it. I think having a varied career, going into theatre would be great, and also, doing a drama would be great. I’m open to anything.

“I’ve just been on holiday which was great and the perfect timing. And now I’m back it’s about getting cracking with show reels and self tapes.”

I lost 6st with fat jabs & now have abs at 42 – the exact diet I follow not to put any weight back on

A MUM has revealed how she lost 6st using weight loss jabs after hitting a size 18.

Ellen Ogley, 42, weighed 16st 12lbs at her heaviest and said comfort eating was the primary cause of her rapid weight gain.

Now she has lost 6st thanks to the fat loss jabs and a new diet[/caption]

SWNS
The mum-of-three is now happier than ever and is chuffed to have abs at 42[/caption]

Now, the mum-of-three has abs after completely changing her relationship with food.

She first lost three stone naturally but on an “unsustainable diet” so she could get a “quick fix” tummy tuck but was still unhappy with her body.

Ellen then decided to try Mounjaro and immediately found it helped with her “food noise” and stopped her from constantly raiding the snack cupboard.

Now the mum has kept between a healthy 10st to 10st 3lb and a size six for eight months.

She says the one thing she’s done that’s helped her maintain her weight is swap two-weekly takeaways and binge drinking weekends for ‘fakeaways’ and weight training and now feels “amazing”.

Ellen, a nursery manager, from Ilkley, Yorkshire, said: “I wanted to make sure I wasn’t reliant on Mounjaro.

“I used this as a tool. I’ve done so much work on damage limitation.

“I want to give others hope they can keep it off. I feel incredible.”

Ellen started “comfort eating” and piled on the weight in a period of sickness – before she was then diagnosed with cervical and ovarian cancer.

She said: “I had blow outs and would have takeaways and binge drinking – it was a coping mechanism.

“I’d have two to three takeaways a week. My drinking was excessive.

“My husband and I would have three bottles of wine between us – it helped numb everything.”

Ellen had to have a hysterectomy and was told she was at a higher risk due to her BMI – which was 36.5 at her biggest.

She said: “I said to myself ‘if I come out the other side I will try and take control of my health’.”

What are the other side effects of weight loss jabs?

Like any medication, weight loss jabs can have side effects.

Common side effects of injections such as Ozempic include:

Nausea: This is the most commonly reported side effect, especially when first starting the medication. It often decreases over time as your body adjusts.

Vomiting: Can occur, often in conjunction with nausea.

Diarrhea: Some people experience gastrointestinal upset.

Constipation: Some individuals may also experience constipation.

Stomach pain or discomfort: Some people may experience abdominal pain or discomfort.

Reduced appetite: This is often a desired effect for people using Ozempic for weight loss.

Indigestion: Can cause a feeling of bloating or discomfort after eating.

Serious side effects can also include:

Pancreatitis: In rare cases, Ozempic may increase the risk of inflammation of the pancreas, known as pancreatitis, which can cause severe stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Kidney problems: There have been reports of kidney issues, including kidney failure, though this is uncommon.

Thyroid tumors: There’s a potential increased risk of thyroid cancer, although this risk is based on animal studies. It is not confirmed in humans, but people with a history of thyroid cancer should avoid Ozempic.

Vision problems: Rapid changes in blood sugar levels may affect vision, and some people have reported blurry vision when taking Ozempic.

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar): Especially if used with other medications like sulfonylureas or insulin.

After she got the all clear Ellen decided to lose weight in September 2023 but wanted a “quick fix”.

She said: “I was looking for an easy way out. I went to see a surgeon for a tummy tuck.

“But I needed to lose three stone in order to have a tummy tuck and liposuction to get skinny.”

Ellen started intermittent fasting and restricted her diet to get down to 13st 10lbs.

She said: “I was doing it in not a very healthy way.

“I was almost starving myself. It was not sustainable.”

Ellen went for her £10k tummy tuck in February 2024 and was happy with her results but had hoped the surgery would help shift more of her weight.

She said: “I only lost 4lbs more after the tummy tuck.

“I was devastated.

“I became obsessed with my body – pulling at it, I had huge hang ups over my arms.”

Ellen decided to give weight loss medication a go and started Mounjaro in May 2024 – coupling it with cardio exercise.

She said: “I thought it was going to be another diet trend but the food noises got switched off.

I got trolled – they called me Skeletor, I was being told I looked like a 60-year-old.

Ellen Ogley

“Before I would raid the cupboard when my husband took his daughter to gymnastics.

“As soon as I went on I realised ‘I’ve not touched the snack cupboard’.

“I started making better lifestyle choices.”

Ellen was on the jab for just 22 weeks – weaning herself off slowly – but started become obsessed with getting as “skinny as possible”.

She said: “I lost my focus. I got trolled – they called me Skeletor, I was being told I looked like a 60-year-old.”

When her husband, Phil Ogley, 53, a surveyor, told her she looked ill she had a wake up call and refocused – taking up weight training.

Now she feels “healthy and strong” and has maintained her weight loss without micro-dosing Mounjaro.

She said: “I’ve been learning how to fuel my body.

“I have hacks in place – if I’m craving sweets I have Greek yoghurt, berries and granola.

“I still have takeaways but I exercise portion control.

“We make chicken kebabs as fakeaways instead of ordering them as takeaways.

“I have abs at 42 – it blows my mind.”

Ellen's Diet Change

Diet before
Breakfast: Skipped
Lunch: Jacket potato, cheese and beans
Dinner: Pasta bake, apple pie and custard
Snacks: Packet of biscuits, cookies

Diet now
Breakfast: Greek yoghurt, berries, granola/ overnight oats

Horror moment Brit couple flee from giant 6ft swimming SNAKE off Ibiza as holiday island is gripped by serpent ‘plague’

THIS is the terrifying moment a 6ft snake slithers through the water right up to a couple’s boat off the coast of Ibiza.

Stefanie Daub and her husband were relaxing on a boat when they noticed sudden movement in the waters of the popular Balearic island.

Snake sightings in the Balearics have surged, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin[/caption]

In a shocking video shared online by Stefanie, a snake is seen slithering through the sea toward their boat while they visited Ses Balandres – a rocky cove on Ibiza’s northwest coast.

As the boat edges forward, the reptile eerily trails close behind.

After over 30 seconds of following the couple, the snake finally appears to change course.

Stefanie wrote as a caption for the video: “A boat trip is a good idea, they said… if you like swimming with snakes.”

Tourist numbers have taken a hit at beaches in the Balearics due to a rise in snake sightings, reports the Majorcan Daily Bulletin.

Some of the Balearic Islands’ most popular coves – like Ses Balandres, where the couple were visiting – have seen their reputations damaged because of the reptiles, the outlet adds.

While experts say these snakes are not venomous, their growing presence causes concern for both locals and visitors.

Though Stefanie has lived in Ibiza since 2006, running yoga and healing retreats on the island, the snake sighting in the sea took her by surprise.

The Brit initially believed the reptile was a “big bird” or “fish”, she told the Mirror.

Describing the ordeal, she told the outlet: “I went out with my husband for a few hours on June 8, before I started work.

“We arrived in Ses Balandres and I saw a movement in the sea.

“I said to my husband ‘look there must be a big fish or a bird under the water’.

“He realised very quickly that it was a snake. We went closer and the snake swam behind the boat. It was really strange.

“I’m not afraid of snakes, but I don’t want to have them on the boat.

“We went away and for a long time we were watching around if she comes back. I was quite relaxed and had a little sleep after a while.”

Stefanie later learnt that a snake had tried to “enter a boat” a few days later.

She said she was relieved that she had not been swimming in the water at the time of the snake sighting.

The Brit added: “I did not even know that they go into the ocean to swim. There are too many and getting more.”

According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, snake sightings are becoming more common in tourist hotspots across the Balearics – especially in Ibiza and Formentera.

As many as 3,800 snakes were captured across the Balearics in 2024 alone, based on figures from environmental officials cited by the outlet.

Ibiza reportedly accounted for over 3,000 of the snakes caught, while nearly 800 were found in Formentera.

Spanish authorities are tightening checks on plant shipments in a bid to stop foreign snake species spreading to island environments, the outlet adds.

Why are snakes increasingly common across the Balearics?

Snakes are increasingly spotted in the Balearic Islands due to a combination of factors:

  • Ornamental olive trees imported from the mainland sometimes carry snake eggs hidden in the roots or soil
  • Warmer temperatures linked to climate change make the region more hospitable for reptiles, providing ideal conditions for snakes to thrive and reproduce
  • Habitat changes can disrupt local ecosystems, allowing snakes to spread more easily
  • A lack of natural predators on the islands means snakes can thrive with fewer threats
  • Growing tourism and trade can unintentionally introduce non-native species

The signs of an allergic reaction and anaphylaxis + what to do

SYMPTOMS of an allergy usually occur within minutes of contact with with the offending food or trigger, but they can also come on up to one hour later.

Most allergic reactions are mild but they can also be moderate or severe.

Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction which can be life threatening.

In some cases, anaphylaxis symptoms lead to collapse and unconsciousness and, on rare occasions, can be fatal so it’s important to know how to recognise them and act quickly.

Mild to moderate symptoms include:

  • Itchy mouth, tongue and throat
  • Swelling of lips, around the eyes or face
  • Red raised itchy rash (often called nettle rash, hives or urticaria)
  • Vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea
  • Runny nose and sneezing

Severe symptoms of anaphylaxis include:

  • Swelling of your throat and tongue
  • Difficulty breathing or breathing very fast
  • Difficulty swallowing, tightness in your throat or a hoarse voice
  • Wheezing, coughing or noisy breathing
  • Feeling tired or confused
  • Feeling faint, dizzy or fainting
  • Skin that feels cold to the touch
  • Blue, grey or pale skin, lips or tongue – if you have brown or black skin, this may be easier to see on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet

Anaphylaxis and its symptoms should be treated as a medical emergency.

Follow these steps if you think you or someone you’re with is having an anaphylactic reaction:

  1. Use an adrenaline auto-injector (such as an EpiPen) if you have one  instructions are included on the side of the injector.
  2. Call 999 for an ambulance and say that you think you’re having an anaphylactic reaction.
  3. Lie down – you can raise your legs, and if you’re struggling to breathe, raise your shoulders or sit up slowly (if you’re pregnant, lie on your left side).
  4. If you have been stung by an insect, try to remove the sting if it’s still in the skin.
  5. If your symptoms have not improved after 5 minutes, use a second adrenaline auto-injector.

Do not stand or walk at any time, even if you feel better.

I tried the viral Korean skincare routine to get glass skin – a Boots serum with unusual ingredient made a difference

IT seems that no matter where you look these days, K-Beauty has taken over.

In fact, there are almost 2 million videos on the subject on TikTok and the Korean skincare industry has taken over the UK’s beauty scene.

In two weeks she went from dull, clogged skin, to glowy[/caption]

A Boots spokesperson told Fabulous that one Korean beauty product sells almost every 15 seconds at Boots and represents over a tenth of all skincare sales.

And it seems for good reason, many beauty experts have said that South Korea is estimated to be 10-12 years ahead of Europe and the US in terms of skincare and aesthetic treatments.

Here, Fabulous reporter Leanne Hall, tries out the viral Korean skincare routine for two weeks to see whether she ends up with glass skin and which new ingredients are worth the hype.

For context, I love South Korea and its culture and even visited earlier this year, and yes, I took home lots of skincare goodies.

But I had no idea that many of the products were now readily available to buy in the UK, thanks to Boots, and I was eager to see what was on offer and how well they worked.

I retired my normal skincare routine – opting for a new six-step routine using only K Beauty products for two weeks.

My skin is on the combination side and pretty sensitive, meaning active ingredients, fragrance and sunscreen all tend to break me out quickly.

Anua Heartleaf Quercetinol Pore Deep Cleansing Foam – £13

Boots product page for Anua Heartleaf Quercetinol Pore Deep Cleansing Foam.
The perfect cleanser for all skin types

This is a relatively basic foaming cleanser, but one that does the job.

With somewhat oily skin, I prefer a foam cleanser to others, and while this left my skin feel squeaky clean, it didn’t dry it out.

I don’t think this did much to make my skin have that shiny glass finish, but it was the perfect building block to start my skincare routine with.

Medicube Zero Pore Pad 2.0 – £24

Medicube Zero Pore Pad (70 pads) containing AHA, BHA, panthenol, allantoin, and sodium hyaluronate.
Boots
These toning pads help banish clogged pores[/caption]

These Medicube pore pads are constantly coming up on my TikTok timeline so I was eager to try them out.

They promise to gently exfoliate the skin with a blend of chemical exfoliants – 4.5% AHA Lactic Acid & 0.45% BHA Salicylic Acid.

The pads are super easy to use, and I did see a difference with blackheads and clogged pores after using the toner.

It also promises to help shrink pores, but I’m yet to see the difference there.

Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum – £20

This hydrating serum instantly refreshed skin[/caption]

Once the toner has been absorbed into the skin, it was time for a serum.

A serum was not something I used before this experiment but is now something I can’t live without.

This Anua PDRN serum is super lightweight but packs a punch with its active ingredients.

The blend of PDRN (salmon DNA taken from it’s semen) and hyaluronic acid gives your skin a well-needed boost of moisture, increases collagen and help skin rejuvenate quicker.

What is PDRN?

Leanna Zaman, Boots Beauty Specialist, explains: “PDRN is hitting the headlines for all the right reasons.

“Derived from salmon DNA, which surprisingly shares a lot of similarities with our own DNA, PDRN-based skincare is great for most skin types and suitable for all ages.

“In fact, anyone experiencing skin damage, dryness, or dehydration can benefit from PDRN’s skin-loving properties.

“I recommend pairing it with other humectants, such as Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramides, to enhance its hydrating and barrier-restoring effects.”

I’m fully aware the thought of putting salmon semen on your face is weird, but it works and has become a holy grail ingredient in South Korea for a reason.

Tocobo Multi Ceramide Cream – £21

Tocobo Multi Ceramide Cream jar.
Boots
Tocobo’s whipped face cream provided moisture without clogging the skin[/caption]

When I first tried this moisturiser I was nervous.

It has a thick whipped texture which is often too heavy for my skin type and clogs my pores.

But after two weeks of using it I am pleased to report that I haven’t had any issues with it.

Instead, my skin has never been softer or more hydrated thanks to it being enriched with ceramides to moisturise the skin.

I’ve often suffered with flaky dry skin around my chin but this immediately cleared it up, a total must-have.

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++ sunscreen tube.
Boots
This sunscreen was quick to absorb and left a glowy look to the skin[/caption]

I know sunscreen is important to wear, but this is another product that I tend to skip.

I have tried too many SPFs to try and count them all and each one has had my skin breaking out almost immediately.

But I’m pleased to report this doesn’t seem to have caused any acne since using it every day.

Not only has it kept my skin clear, it absorbs quickly, leaves skin glowing and doesn’t hurt when it goes near my eyes.

Rating: 4/5

Medicube Collagen Night Wrapping Mask – £26

Screenshot of Boots website product page for Medicube Collagen Night Wrapping Mask 75ml.
Boots
The Medicube mask locks moisture in overnight[/caption]

This particular Medicube buy has been going viral on TikTok with many praising it for giving you instant glass skin, so naturally, I had to try it.

You simply do your usual skincare routine before applying a thick layer of this clear mask to your face.

You then want to let it dry for 15 minutes to dry down and then you can sleep.

Not only is this super fun to peel off (don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt like the ones in the 90s) it also instantly makes your skin glow.

After peeling it off you are left with the softest skin you’ve ever had which reflects when the light hits for the perfect glass skin.

Rating: 4/5

Final Thoughts

Using these products together has absolutely made a difference in how my skin feels and looks.

My skin genuinely feels more hydrated than it has ever been. (Trust me, I can say this with confidence, as I was berated for how dehydrated it was when I went to a facialist in Korea.)

Not only was it so much more hydrated, making fine lines (hello 30) disappear but it left my skin more plump and glowy.

While moisturising the skin, I also found I didn’t break out as often as I normally would.

For those wanting an extensive skincare routine, I would recommend all of these products. For those wanting to splurge on one wonder product, the collagen wrapping mask is a must-have to give skin an instant lift, perfect for prepping for big events.

Belle Dingle’s schizophrenia in Emmerdale – Belle’s (Eden Taylor-Draper) traumatic journey in Emmerdale took a dark turn when, after accidentally killing her best friend Gemma at just 16, her mental health began to spiral.

The storyline, which saw Belle struggling with her grief and guilt, showcased her battle with hearing Gemma’s voice inside her head, leading to a dramatic decline in her well-being.

Hannah Ashworth’s anorexia in Hollyoaks – Viewers were horrified as they watched Hannah (Emma Rigby), a seemingly innocent teen, spiral into dangerous behavior, starving herself in an attempt to achieve what she thought was the ideal body.

As Hannah’s condition worsened, the storyline became more intense, culminating in her being hospitalised for two months as she fought for her life.

Bethany Platt’s grooming ordeal in Coronation Street – Vulnerable schoolgirl, played by Lucy Fallon, was at the centre of one of Corrie’s darkest storylines to date when she fell under the spell of her older boyfriend and sexual predator.

The controversial scenes saw Nathan groom and manipulate the 16-year-old before coercing her into sleeping with his friends, with one of them raping her.

Whitney Dean’s abuse from Tony in EastEnders – Since the age of 12, she had been in a twisted relationship with her stepmum Bianca’s boyfriend, Tony King. The predator had groomed young Whit (Shona McGarty), making her believe she was in love and planning to run away with him.

On her 16th birthday, the traumatised teen finally revealed the years of abuse to Bianca. Tony was swiftly sent to prison sentenced for 13 years.

She then discovers Alfie isn’t in Australia like he claimed.

The bombshell leaves Kat reeling as she realises she’s been lied to… again.

Will Kat finally uncover the truth about Alfie’s real reason for disappearing and that he’s been secretly digging into Zoe’s whereabouts?

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One or stream from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
