Martin O’Neill fires hilarious dig at ‘vitriolic critic’ Keith Andrews amid rumoured Brentford appointment
MARTIN O’Neill has hit out at pundit-turned-coach Keith Andrews who was previously critical of O’Neill during his management career.
Keith Andrews looks in line to make the step up from set-piece coach to manager of Brentford following Thomas Frank’s switch to Tottenham Hotspurs.

Despite having no previous management experience, the former Ireland star looks set to land the Premier League head coach position.
Andrews coached at MK Dons, Sheffield United, the Republic of Ireland and Brentford since his punditry during the O’Neill Ireland era.
O’Neill recalls Andrews’ time as a pundit which overlapped his Ireland tenure.
Speaking to talkSPORT O’Neill said: “He has been their set-piece coach. The irony is when I was manager of the Republic of Ireland he was a particularly vitriolic critic of mine at the time.
“He was really dead against me trying to use set-pieces to try to win games.
“The irony is he becomes the set-piece coach. Really I say good luck to him. Brentford have decided, if it is the case, that he should get it.
“I hope he does get it because then he will realise what management is all about.
While Andrews was a Sky Sports pundit, he was particularly critical of O’Neill’s tactics and put the entirety of the blame on him for Ireland’s poor form following Euro 2016.
The two-time European Cup winner took a sly dig at Andrews’ inferior footballing career.
While Andrews boasts an impressive CV including Premier League football, his biggest honours arguably came in the 2007/08 season with MK Dons when he won the Football League Trophy as well as topping League Two.
The eight-time Premier League Manager of the Month gloated: “It’s not as easy to be sitting in a pundit’s chair sitting to criticise someone who in all honesty had a much better career than he had.
“He was dealing at the bottom end of it when I was winning the European Cup. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be criticising. Everyone to their own. But it’ll be a different ball game now.
It wasn’t only negativity from O’Neill for the mastermind behind Brentford’s 13 set-piece goals this season.
He praised some of Andrews’ work throughout the season which helped Brentford to a 10th place finish in the Premier League.
The 73-year-old added: “In terms of some of the decisions he has made, I think he has done very well as the set-piece coach. A lot of credit has gone to him for the fast starts Brentford have made in games.
“He is stepping into an unknown. It’s all very well when you can be the friend of the players.
“You can have the set-pieces, you can be the coach sitting there in the room. It’s a different ball game when you’re making the big decisions.”
The Bees’ 13 set-piece goals puts them in the top five in the Premier League in that category – behind just Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and level with Arsenal.
Andrews will be hoping to transfer some of his set-piece successes into a successful time in charge of Brentford, if he is to get the role.

Contaminated perfume sold at Superdrug urgently recalled in UK over ‘serious health risk’ after harmful chemical found
SUPERDRUG has issued an urgent recall for a contaminated perfume as another major retailer announced it was pulling the product.
The item has been marked as a “serious” chemical risk, with customers being warned against using it.

Several varieties of Soulcal & Co 236ml body mist sprays have been removed from shelves at Superdrug.
A notice on the health and beauty retailer’s website explains that the item is no longer available.
The Chinese-made perfumes have also been removed by popular chain Farmfoods over health concerns.
Affected products include Soulcal Body Mist Raspberry & Lotus Blossom, Mango & Passion Fruit, Apple & Waterlily, Coco Plum & Jacaranda and Beach Rose & Coconut Water.
The Office for Product Safety and Standards confirmed that the sprays contain a substance that is banned in Europe.
Shoppers have been advised to stop using the items immediately and return them to stores for a full refund.
A safety notice read: “The product presents a serious chemical risk as it contains butylphenyl methylpropional, which is prohibited in cosmetic products.
“BMHCA may harm the reproductive system, may harm the health of the unborn child, and may cause skin sensitisation.
“The products have been recalled from end users by the manufacturer.
“Affected products have been withdrawn from sale by Farmfoods.
“Owners of any of the affected products should stop using it immediately and return the product to the seller they purchased from for a full refund.”
It comes after TK Maxx recalled a perfume over similar fears.
The Byblos Blu Happy Hour Eau De Toilette was sold in the department store between January and March this year, but has now been removed from shelves.
Customers were urged to stop using the item to avoid unpleasant side affects.
Recent product recalls
Tony’s Chocolonely issued a warning to its customers, telling them not to eat the Dark Almond Sea Salt and Everything Bar.
Elsewhere, Sainsbury’s has issued a voluntary product recall for two air fryer models from electronics brand Tower.
Customers are being urged to return the gadget for a full refund.
And Lidl shoppers are being told not to eat one of its savoury snacks over fears it could contain salmonella.
The discount supermarket has urgently recalled its Sol & Mar Chicharricos BBQ Pork Scratchings after the problem was found.
Your product recall rights
Chief consumer reporter James Flanders reveals all you need to know.
Product recalls are an important means of protecting consumers from dangerous goods.
As a general rule, if a recall involves a branded product, the manufacturer would usually have lead responsibility for the recall action.
But it’s often left up to supermarkets to notify customers when products could put them at risk.
If you are concerned about the safety of a product you own, always check the manufacturer’s website to see if a safety notice has been issued.
When it comes to appliances, rather than just food items, the onus is usually on you – the customer – to register the appliance with the manufacturer as if you don’t there is no way of contacting you to tell you about a fault.
If you become aware that an item you own has been recalled or has any safety noticed issued against it, make sure you follow the instructions given to you by the manufacturer.
They should usually provide you with more information and a contact number on its safety notice.
In some cases, the manufacturer might ask you to return the item for a full refund or arrange for the faulty product to be collected.
You should not be charged for any recall work – such as a repair, replacement or collection of the recalled item

Senior figure in feuding Dublin crime gang caught in bulletproof vest with 3D printed gun amid attack on ‘rival’ fears
A SENIOR figure in a feuding crime gang in Dublin has been caught with a 3D printed firearm.
The suspect – who was wearing a bulletproof vest – was with another man when he was stopped by Gardai as he entered a taxi in the Turvey Avenue area of Inchicore at 8pm on Tuesday night.

As officers from the Community Engagement unit at Kilmainham Garda station searched the suspect after discovering a “strong smell of cannabis“, the weapon fell from the ballistic vest.
The suspect was arrested and the weapon seized.
One theory is that it was ordered on the darknet.
Both men are known to Gardai and have previously been targeted by their rivals in petrol bombings and drive-by shootings.
One source said: “Both of these suspects are currently involved in a feud that has already seen a lot of violent incidents.
“It looks as if they are using 3D printed weapons to target their rivals.
“Gardai suspect that the main suspect was planning to use the weapon on a rival.”
The seizure was welcomed by the Gardai’s Assistant Commissioner for Dublin Paul Cleary.
AC Cleary said: “I want to acknowledge and commend the work of two uniform members of An Garda Siochana yesterday evening going about their duties diligently and proactively.
“This was a timely intervention likely to have saved lives or prevented serious injury and is another dangerous firearm which has been taken off the streets of Dublin.
‘ON DUTY 24 HOURS A DAY’
“Gardai across the Dublin region are on duty 24 hours a day, supporting local communities and working hard on the An Garda Siochana mission of keeping people safe.”
The Irish Sun can also reveal a second firearm was recovered by Gardai in recent days.
On that occasion, the weapon was found in the south inner city on Sunday night by the Serious Crime Unit in the Gardai’s South Central Division.
