How to measure a TV screen: From viewing distance to sizes, a step-by-step guide

IF you’re thinking about buying a new TV and need help figuring out if you’ve got the space for a bigger one, we’ve got you covered.

Whether you’re treating yourself or you’ve been gifted a set and want to know its dimensions, it’s helpful to know how to measure the size of a TV screen.

Person measuring the back of a TV screen with a tape measure.
Read our step-by-step guide to measuring your TV the right way

You’ll find plenty of TV deals out there, with retailers offering price drops on televisions ranging from a tiny 24 inches to a humongous 85 inches in size.

It’s also important to remember that TV manufacturers list diagonal, not vertical or horizontal screen size – this is an industry standard.

If you’re working out where to install your TV, it’s a good idea to measure its depth, too.

With that in mind, read on to find out how to measure a TV screen, step by step – all you’ll need is a measuring tape.

Before you purchase a new TV, make sure you know which TV size you should buy.

How do I measure a TV screen size?

Here’s our step-by-step guide to measuring your TV screen.

1. Diagonally measure the whole TV

To begin with, you want to take measuring tape and run it from one corner to that of one diagonally opposite.

This will include the bezel (the border surrounds the screen itself) – in other words, the entirety of the television.

You’ll likely notice a few millimetres’ discrepancies between what you measured and your television’s advertised size – don’t worry, this is pretty standard.

2. Diagonally measure just the TV screen

Now, measure from the same corners, but this time just measure the screen – don’t include the bordering bezel.

Don’t be surprised if this measurement is a little smaller than the advertised size – this is because most TVs have a tiny portion of their screens hidden away under the bezel.

3. Horizontally and vertically measure the whole TV

It’s always worth recording the overall dimensions of your television, so use your tape measure to make a note of the TV’s width and height.

This will probably be useful if you decide to buy a TV stand or TV bracket.

4. Measure the depth of the TV

Most TVs take up very little depth these days, but there can still often be a chunky component behind the screen.

Make a note of your television’s depth – this is particularly handy if you’re thinking of putting your TV on a shelving unit, cabinet, or inside an alcove.

Screen size by viewing distance calculator

Selecting the right screen size based on your viewing distance is essential for an optimal viewing experience.

Luckily for shoppers, there is a clever trick to calculate the optimal TV size for your viewing distance.

The simplest thing to do is to work out where you want to position your TV, measure the distance to the seats in your room, and then consult the list below.

TV sizes and distance from the screen

TV size: 32 inches – Viewing distance: seven feet or two metres

TV size: 40 to 43 inches – Viewing distance: eight feet or 2.5 metres

TV size: 49 to 50 inches – Viewing distance: nine to 10 feet or 2.7 to three metres

TV size: 55 inches – Viewing distance: 11 to 12 feet or 3.4 to 3.7 metres

TV size: 65 inches – Viewing distance: 13 feet or four metres

What sizes do TVs come in?

Common TV sizes include 32”, 43”, 50”, and 55”.

There are also larger sizes available for those seeking a more immersive viewing experience.

Retailers like LG and Samsung stock larger models, including 75-inch, 85-inch, and 98-inch TVs.

How to decide what size TV will suit you

Trying to figure out what TV size works best for your space?

You’ll want to consider key factors like viewing distance, room size, and resolution.

Higher resolution, like 4K or 8K, provides a sharper image, especially on larger screens, and allows for closer viewing distances without pixelation.

What is the most popular TV size to buy?

According to a recent YouGov survey: ”The most desired screen sizes are between 44 and 55 inches, preferred by 35% of British adults.”

Meanwhile, 21% of Brits prefer a TV between 56 and 65 inches, and 8% want a screen over 65 inches.

Sh had already lost 4st in six months[/caption]

After being on Mounjaro for six months, she shared the things she wish she knew before starting her journey.

In the clip, she said: “The weight won’t magically come off, you need to have a lifestyle change.”

She said walking and a calorie deficit were vital to shift weight even with the help of the fat loss jab.

Kathryn also warned that you won’t notice the weight loss on yourself for months even if it is happening.

“That being said, my face was the first place I noticed it,” she explained.

Kathryn also had some advice for those dealing with negative side effects of the drug.

She said: “Drink at least 3 litres of water a day, trust me. It makes the world of difference for how you feel day to day and helps numerous side effects.”

After losing 4st, she also revealed fibre was super important to help shift the weight.

With weight loss jabs, many people feel less hungry so struggle to eat enough fibre.

But Kathryn recommended fibre supplements to make sure you get the daily recommendation.

“I’m a terrible veg eater so I get mine mainly through vitamins, oats or fibre bars you can buy at the shops. Graze do one that is sticky toffee pudding flavour and it’s great,” she added.

Kathryn also warned those going on the drug not to totally restrict what they eat and drink.

She said you can have everything in moderation instead of changing your whole diet.

The clip has since gone viral on her TikTok account @kathrynelizabethx with over 160k views and 2,000 likes.

People were quick to share their experiences in the comments.

One person wrote: “My nausea is so bad for the first two days and I have absolutely no appetite whatsoever! I feel like I can’t win.”

Another commented: “Completely agree with all of this! I’m at the end of my 5th week and lost 18lbs. Feeling good, and both myself and friends have said they can see a difference.”

“Do you still have to drink water even if you’ve got no side effects?” penned a third.

What are the other side effects of weight loss jabs?

Like any medication, weight loss jabs can have side effects.

Common side effects of injections such as Ozempic include:

Nausea: This is the most commonly reported side effect, especially when first starting the medication. It often decreases over time as your body adjusts.

Vomiting: Can occur, often in conjunction with nausea.

Diarrhea: Some people experience gastrointestinal upset.

Constipation: Some individuals may also experience constipation.

Stomach pain or discomfort: Some people may experience abdominal pain or discomfort.

Reduced appetite: This is often a desired effect for people using Ozempic for weight loss.

Indigestion: Can cause a feeling of bloating or discomfort after eating.

Serious side effects can also include:

Pancreatitis: In rare cases, Ozempic may increase the risk of inflammation of the pancreas, known as pancreatitis, which can cause severe stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Kidney problems: There have been reports of kidney issues, including kidney failure, though this is uncommon.

Thyroid tumors: There’s a potential increased risk of thyroid cancer, although this risk is based on animal studies. It is not confirmed in humans, but people with a history of thyroid cancer should avoid Ozempic.

Vision problems: Rapid changes in blood sugar levels may affect vision, and some people have reported blurry vision when taking Ozempic.

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar): Especially if used with other medications like sulfonylureas or insulin.

Kathryn replied: “Yes! I found that the days I haven’t drunk enough water I get the side effects the next day. It’s a vicious cycle.”

Meanwhile a fourth said: “Looking fabulous! Well done!”

“You look amazing,” claimed a fifth

Someone else added: “My favourite part is scaring the daylights out of people I’ve not seen in a year. I’m a new me.”

Una often gives fans a glimpse into her day-to-day life with her kids on social media.

And yesterday, the Tipperary native and her 13-year-old daughter Aoife joined the crowds at Olivia Rodrigo‘s sold out show in Marlay Park, where the American pop sensation was playing to 40,000 fans.

The 43-year-old and her lookalike daughter posed for a quick selfie in the car on their way to the gig.

The duo looked the part in their white graphic tees with purple details, which is Olivia’s signature colour.

Una opted for a natural makeup look while Aoife styled her hair with decorative embellishments and completed her outfit with face gems.

The mum-of-two captioned her post: “Great day out @oliviarodrigo.”

Fans and friends were all left saying the same thing as they flocked to the comment section to share their love.

Laura said: “Her mamas twin.”

Peter wrote: “Looking like sisters.”

Claire commented: “Twins.”

Teresa said: “Clones of each other.”

Another added: “Both beautiful.”

Una recently got shot down by her former bandmates after suggesting a reunion.

The Saturdays racked up 12 UK top ten hits and released four studio albums between 2007 and 2014.

Una opened up about her experience being in a girlband on Lisa Snowdon and Andy Goldstein’s podcast We’re Not Getting Any Younger recently.

WHAT ABOUT US

Speaking about Rochelle HumesVanessa White, Frankie Bridge and Mollie King, Una said: “We all got on really well and we spent all the time together because we were travelling together, getting ready together in little tiny changing rooms.

“There was no kind of getting away from each other. So we were just like a family. I’m close to all of them. I speak to them all. We’re all in a group chat.”

The mum-of-two admitted that herself and her former bandmates “don’t see each other often enough” and would like to see them more.

She added: “But we definitely need to organise more get togethers, all of us.”

And when asked if the Tipperary native missed her glory days, she confessed: “Yeah, I really do. They were so… I just felt like I was living the dream.

“I’d worked so hard and grafted and singing in bars and pubs. So getting into a girl band and having that experience and everything was the best years of my life.”

The 43-year-old even said that she would “totally” be up for getting back together and added: “I would love to.”

The Chase fans left screaming as player gets ‘ridiculously easy’ question wrong – but would you know the answer?

THE Chase fans were left screaming at one of the programme’s contestants after they got a ‘ridiculously easy’ question wrong.

The moment had viewers at home up in arms as they were left raging at the error on the ITV teatime quiz favourite.

Shaun Wallace went against her to get the right answer[/caption]

Bradley Walsh was back to host the show as ever as four players all attempted to beat the chaser and make it to the final round in hopes of bringing home some cash.

Attempting to stop them during the episode was Shaun Wallace – better known as The Dark Destroyer.

The four players attempting to take him on were Justin from Manchester, Reanna from Liverpool, Nicola from Nottingham, and Matthew from Leeds.

However, after first player Justin was caught – all eyes were on Reanna to bring back some cash.

But it was not meant to be for Reanna after she was knocked out by Shaun on her final question that many deemed as “ridiculously easy”.

The moment in question saw Bradley ask the player: “In legend, how did the basilisk kill its prey?”

Reanna was then given three choices – either stinging, singing or staring.

Sadly, she answered incorrectly by opting for stinging.

The programme went on to reveal that the correct answer was in fact – staring.

It led many to fume at Reanna who insisted it was an easy question – with many referencing the Harry Potter films as their reasoning.

One wrote online: “She’s clearly never watched Harry Potter #TheChase.”

Another added: “These questions are ridiculous! #TheChase.”

A third went on to pen:  “Ridiculously easy? I quite agree.”

Before a fourth posted: “Nah, I’m screaming that was easy.”

The team did not fare much better after her exit as Matthew was also caught by the chaser.

Nicola managed to take on Shaun alone but was eliminated with over a minute left on the clock.

Hardest Quiz Show Questions

Would you know the answers to some of quizzing TV's hardest questions

  • Who Wants To Be A Millionaire – Earlier this year, fans were left outraged after what they described as the “worst” question in the show’s history. Host Jeremy Clarkson asked: “From the 2000 awards ceremony onwards, the Best Actress Oscar has never been won by a woman whose surname begins with which one of these letters?” The multiple choice answers were between G, K, M and W. In the end, and with the £32,000 safe, player Glen had to make a guess and went for G. It turned out to be correct as Nicole Kidman, Frances McDormand and Kate Winslet are among the stars who have won the Best Actress gong since 2000.
  • The 1% Club – Viewers of Lee Mack’s popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The query went as follows: “Edna’s birthday is on the 6th of April and Jen’s birthday falls on the 15th of October, therefore Amir’s birthday must be the ‘X’ of January.” It turns out the conundrum links the numbers with its position in the sentence, so 6th is the sixth word and 15th is the fifteenth word. Therefore, Amir’s birthday is January 24th, corresponding to the 24th word in the sentence.
  • The Chase – The ITV daytime favourite left fans scratching their heads when it threw up one of the most bizarre questions to ever grace the programme. One of the questions asked the player: “Someone with a nightshade intolerance should avoid eating what?” The options were – sweetcorn, potatoes, carrots – with Steve selecting sweetcorn but the correct answer was potatoes.

Jake Paul says WBC and WBA plan to rank him with victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr to set up controversial title shot

JAKE PAUL says the WBC and WBA plan to hand him a world ranking if he beats Julio Cesar Chavez Jr – setting up a controversial title shot.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer has voiced lofty ambitions of challenging for cruiserweight gold – despite only turning professional in 2020.

But to do so, he must be ranked within the governing bodies’ ratings.

And Paul claimed the WBC and WBA – boxing’s oldest organisations – will do so if he beat ex-middleweight champion Chavez Jr on Saturday.

Paul said: “My goal is to become world champion and the WBA and WBC plan on ranking me depending on my performance. And once I’m ranked I can go for the title shot.

“He’s a formidable opponent, former world champion, it’s a great, test ten rounds to get ready for what will ultimately be a world championship fight one day.”

Per WBC rules, a contender must be ranked within their top 15 to be considered for a shot at the world title – held by Badou Jack at 200lb.

And the WBA evaluates boxers based on factors, including their record, activity, and the caliber of their opponents.

Boxers also need at least two ten-round bouts to be considered for a ranking – with Chavez Jr indeed Paul’s second fight scheduled for that distance.

But Paul is yet to beat anyone ranked within the WBC or WBA – losing to the former No39-ranked cruiserweight Tommy Fury in 2023.

Jake Paul vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr

JAKE PAUL’S controversial boxing career rolls on this weekend with the Problem Child facing boxing royalty in Anaheim, California.

Paul will face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, a highly-decorated former world middleweight champion.

The Mexican, 39, has fought just once in the last four years but has the best boxing resume of any fighter to step into a ring with Paul – bar Mike Tyson, who was aged 58 at the time they fought.

Is it safe to travel to Turkey? Latest flight and holiday advice

TURKEY is a Brit-loved holiday destination, with sun-soaked beaches, rich culture and amazing food.

But as tensions escalate in the region between Israel and Iran, many holidaymakers heading to Turkey are asking themselves whether it is safe to go — here’s what you need to know.

Is Turkey close to Iran?

Turkey shares part of its eastern border with Iran.

Iran is currently engaged in hostilities with Israel and both sides have launched missile strikes in the last few days.

Some of these have affected neighbouring countries such as Qatar, which despite not being actively involved in the conflict was the target of an attack on a US air base.

A ceasefire was announced yesterday morning (Tuesday June 24) but the deal was broken not long after.

Turkish tourist hotspots such as Bodrum, Istanbul and Cappadocia are not located near the country’s border with Iran.

Is it safe to travel to Turkey?

Turkey was visited by 4.4 million British tourists in 2024.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has not changed its travel advice for the country.

A statement — which predates the Israel-Iran unrest — reads: “FCDO advises against all travel to within 10km of the border with Syria due to fighting and a heightened risk of terrorism.”

However, it does not advise against travel to any other part of Turkey, indicating that the majority of the country is safe to visit and holidays can go ahead.

Have flights to Turkey been affected?

Several countries in the Middle East closed their airspaces in recent days, with a number of airlines cancelling flights as a result.

Many planes flying over the region were diverted to different airports, causing widespread chaos and severe delays including for travellers heading to Doha and Dubai.

Flights to Turkey are not currently affected by the volatile air traffic situation and package holidays to the country are continuing as normal.

Antalya, Dalaman, Istanbul and Bodrum Milas airports are all operating without delays, according to data on tracking site FlightRadar.

Can I cancel my holiday?

It is unlikely that you will be able to claim a refund from either a holiday provider or insurance company due to the FCDO having not advised against travel to Turkey.

If you wish to change the date or time of your trip, it is worth contacting the relevant airline or tour operator to see if they can offer any flexibility.

However, there is no guarantee that you will receive a refund for your booking.

Flight compensation rules

A look at your rights if a flight is delayed or cancelled, when your entitled to compensation and if your travel insurance can cover the costs.

What are my rights if my flight is cancelled or delayed?

Under UK law, airlines have to provide compensation if your flight arrives at its destination more than three hours late.

If you’re flying to or from the UK, your airline must let you choose a refund or an alternative flight.

You will be able to get your money back for the part of your ticket that you haven’t used yet.

So if you booked a return flight and the outbound leg is cancelled, you can get the full cost of the return ticket refunded.

But if travelling is essential, then your airline has to find you an alternative flight. This could even be with another airline.

When am I not entitled to compensation?

The airline doesn’t have to give you a refund if the flight was cancelled due to reasons beyond their control, such as extreme weather.

Disruptions caused by things like extreme weather, airport or air traffic control employee strikes or other ‘extraordinary circumstances’ are not eligible for compensation.

Some airlines may stretch the definition of “extraordinary circumstances” but you can challenge them through the aviation regulator the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Will my insurance cover me if my flight is cancelled?

If you can’t claim compensation directly through the airline, your travel insurance may refund you.

Policies vary so you should check the small print, but a delay of eight to 12 hours will normally mean you qualify for some money from your insurer.

Remember to get written confirmation of your delay from the airport as your insurer will need proof.

If your flight is cancelled entirely, you’re unlikely to be covered by your insurance.

The Cotswolds pubs where you’re most likely to bump into a celebrity next to your pint

THE Cotswolds is a popular spot for celebrities enjoying a pint or two, but there are specific boozers where you’re more likely to see them.

holidaylodges.co.uk has revealed three must-visit pubs in the Cotswolds where celebrities have recently been spotted, and they have pints from £6.

The Bull is a beautiful stone pub in Charlbury, Chipping Norton that has been around since the 1500s and has been known to draw in famous faces.

From Jack Whitehall to Robbie Williams even Princess Eugenie and Beatrice – all of them have taken a seat in the historic pub.

The Bull serves food from classic pies, to fish and oysters, and there’s a cocktail menu and an enormous wine list.

Another popular pit stop is The Chequers in Chipping Norton.

In January of this year, Victoria and David Beckham enjoyed a cosy countryside pub lunch.

The glamorous couple even bumped into Clarkson’s Farm star, Gerald Cooper during their visit.

It is no surprise that these three have been spotted there – and are probably frequent visitors.

Gerald works at the nearby Diddly Squat farm in Chipping Norton and the Beckhams‘ Grade II-listed farmhouse is located on the nearby Great Tew estate.

One visitors to the pub wrote on Tripadvisor: “The locals are more than welcoming, entering into lively conversations.

“The space is cosy and this amplifies the energy and the experience. Well worth visiting for a pint or more and a bite.”

Of course, at The Farmer’s Dog in Burford, the TV star you are most likely to see there is Jeremy Clarkson because he owns it.

One visitors even said when they visited that Jeremy was sitting just a “few tables away.”

The Clarkson’s Farm star opened The Farmer’s Dog in 2024 – and it’s been pretty busy since then.

At Jeremy’s pub, visitors can treat themselves to the steak pie, ham hock terrine, rhubarb crumble, and a wide range of other menu items, that comes from local farmers.

Since the pub opened, it has been extremely busy with locals and out of town visitors.

Last year, Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi were spotted in the pub watching live music.

It is no surprise as the pair reportedly moved to the Cotswolds in November last year from California.

Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia and British star James Blunt were also spotted at the pub for the event.

Another pub that has become a popular spot for tourists, although you are now unlikely to see a celebrity there, is The Falkland Arms.

The pub appeared in scenes of Mobland series two which stars Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Dame Helen Mirren.

So, while you will not actually see the movie stars in the pub (sadly), you can order from the bar and sit where they did.

Tearful scenes as Slane icon Lord Henry’s kids follow coffin with ‘party on in memory’ tribute & U2 star joins mourners

GRIEVING loved ones of Slane Castle’s Lord Henry Mount Charles have vowed to “party on in his memory”, his funeral service heard.

His funeral was held at St Patrick’s Church of Ireland in Slane on Wednesday, following his death at the age of 74 last week after a long battle with cancer.

Some of the best known names in Irish society turned out to pay their respects, including former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, rocker Adam Clayton and MCD boss Denis Desmond.

During the service, Alex Conyngham said his father “truly loved” Ireland despite initially struggling with his Anglo-Irish identity.

Since 1981, Lord Henry, a rock fan, hosted a series of open-air concerts at his ancestral home of Slane Castle in Co Meath.

The Slane estate, which acts as a natural amphitheatre due to its sloping lands, has played host to several top acts including The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Queen, U2 and Madonna.

The last Slane Festival was in June 2023, when Harry Styles performed for 80,000 fans.

His son, the ninth Marquess Conyngham, recalled a joke by Frank Kelly that described his father being “born with a silver dagger in his back” with his unconventional but privileged position at Slane Castle.

He said his father was “immensely lucky” to have had a “colourful string of people” working on the estate for which he was grateful as they “rolled through the good times and the occasional dark days” including when the castle was significantly damaged by a fire in 1991.

Alex Conyngham said: “Dad initially struggled with his Anglo-Irish identity, and described it as feeling like he had a leg either side of the Irish Sea with each side treating him as something of an outsider.

“It was when he went to Harvard and immersed himself in the study of Irish history that that fog of uncertainty lifted.”

He said it was there that he realised that, as an Anglo-Irish aristocrat, he belonged to one of the “many streams” that fed Ireland and could make positive contributions towards the country.

“Politically, he was a passionate constitutional Republican, and he truly loved this country, its culture and people, and he counted himself blessed to be an Irishman.”

TOUCHING TRIBUTE

However, he noted that not everyone agreed with this perspective and the castle walls had previously been defaced with aggressive, negative graffiti.

“But this only emboldened dad to strive all the harder.”

Alex Conyngham said his father had a great commitment towards peace, and it also came to him that he had to open up the castle gates while being “driven by a conviction that music is a universal language that brings people together.”

The first “real breakthrough” came with a Thin Lizzy concert in 1981, with U2 and Hazel O’Connor also on the bill.

SAVE ROCK AND ROLL

At a time of financial difficulty, he said Slane Castle was “saved by rock and roll”.

Alex Conyngham also paid tribute to Lord Henry’s interest in politics, saying his father “loved to connect”.

Although his political ambitions were unrealised, he found other ways to express his opinions – including the “Lord Henry” column in the Irish Mirror.

After saying Lord Henry was blessed to enjoy the love of two remarkable women – his first wife Eileen and his second wife Iona, he thanked his father for trusting him with his legacy.

He added: “Dad’s thanks and mine to all of you in Slane and online who have gathered here to say ‘slan’ to Henry.”

WISE WORDS

The service featured readings by Lord Simon Conyngham and Wolfe Conyngham, as well as U2 member Adam Clayton.

Lord Henry’s daughter Tamara read a tribute called “lessons from my dad”, which included: “Never give up, ever.”

She said: “Dad was one of the most determined people that I know and he proved what can be achieved when you truly put your mind to it.”

Also recalling an anecdote about being admonished for going to bed before the last of our guests, she added: “He fought for so long because he didn’t want to leave the party and all we can do now is party on in his memory.”

Following the service, his coffin was carried out of the church while Bad by U2 played.
