Shelbourne fans spot hilarious twist in Damien Duff’s exit as fans choose to laugh rather than cry

SHELBOURNE fans have spotted an unusual set of odds given by a bookmaker for the next permanent Shelbourne manager.

A bookmaker had Damien Duff as the favourite candidate to fill the role he has just left vacant as Shelbourne boss at 2/1 odds.

The two-time Premier League winner will likely have his sights set on a new challenge
Betting odds for the next permanent Shelbourne manager.

The list contains many names that would be familiar with Shelbourne and LOI fans[/caption]

The above bookmaker has Duff as the favourite to return, while fellow ex-Shelbourne bosses Kevin Doherty, Ian Morris, Pat Fenlon and Dermot Keely are also in the running.

Ex-Shelbourne players Jim Crawford, Ciaran Kilduff, Jim Gannon, Stuart Byrne, Stephen Elliott, Pat Scully and Paul Doolin also make up the bizarre table.

The former Ireland international suddenly stepped down as first team manager on Sunday just a day before Shelbourne’s tough fixture against Waterford and a few weeks before their Champions League meeting with Linfield.

The decision has come as a shock to the League of Ireland community and even gained international media attention.

League rivals Alan Reynolds and Stephen Bradley were most complementary of the 2024 league winner as he resigned from his role, saying: “He was fantastic for the league.”

Shelbourne fans were left amused by the bookmakers odds, one fan saying: “Honestly that 2/1 wouldn’t surprise me.”

Another fan persisted: “Duff at 2/1 are great odds.” While most fans have another League of Ireland manager in mind saying “it’s got to be Kevin Doherty, you would think.

His assistant manager Joey O’Brien has taken the interim reigns as the North Dublin club look to find a permanent replacement to the League of Ireland’s golden goose.

O’Brien’s first match came just 24 hours after he was named interim boss. Despite a strong team performance his Shelbourne side could only come away with one point from the Regional Sports Centre against Waterford.

The former West Ham star spoke about Duff’s exit after the game saying: ““It was a shock for everyone in the football club. From a personal point of view, I absolutely loved the manager. He will always be my manager.”

Duff’s last game in charge of the ‘auld reds’ came on Friday in a 1-0 loss at home to Derry in the league.

Despite his outrage in his post match interviews nobody had anticipated his resignation over the weekend.

Blockbuster weight loss jabs ‘significantly lower’ the risk of dementia

WEIGHT loss jabs may also help ward off dementia, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that semaglutide – the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy – could “significantly” slash the risk of the brain-robbing disease in people with type 2 diabetes.

Weight loss and antidiabetic jabs like Ozempic and Wegovy could have other health benefits[/caption]

Study leader Professor Rong Xu said: “There is no cure or effective treatment for dementia, so this new study provides real-world evidence for its potential impact on preventing or slowing dementia development among a high risk population.”

Semaglutide, part of a group of drugs called GLP-1 agonists, was originally invented to treat type 2 diabetes.

But trials found it could also cause major weight loss – about 10 to 15 per cent of body weight over 18 months.

It triggers fullness hormones in the gut to prevent hunger and over-eating.

Semaglutide has already been found to lower the risk of heart disease, bowel cancer and fertility issues.

But researchers at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, now have evidence it could play a key role in preventing dementia.

The syndrome occurs when brain cells are damaged and their connections stop working properly.

That damage, which worsens over time, impacts memory, thinking and reasoning.

It can be caused by various conditions and events, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, traumatic brain injury and stroke.

Previous research has indicated that 45 per cent of dementia cases could be prevented by addressing these “modifiable risk factors”.

The new study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, analysed the electronic records of nearly 1.7million American patients with type 2 diabetes over three years.

Patients taking semaglutide had a “significantly lower” risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease-related dementia compared to those on seven other antidiabetic medications.

This included other types of GLP-1R-targeting drugs.

The results were more “profound” in women and older adults.

Prof Xu said the findings support the idea that semaglutide could prevent dementia.

But she cautioned that more research is needed.

“Our results indicate that research into semaglutide’s use for dementia prevention will need to be further investigated through randomised clinical trials,” Prof Xu added.

Are you eligible for weight loss jabs on the NHS?

By Sam Blanchard, Health Correspondent

THEY are arguably the biggest medical breakthrough of recent times.

And now, so-called ‘fat jabs’ are available to many more Brits on the NHS.

In what marks the dawn of a new era, GPs have begun prescribing the weight loss jab Mounjaro in the first anti-obesity rollout of its kind.

More than three million people are thought to be eligible for tirzepatide – the active drug in Mounjaro – the strongest jab on the market.

Health chiefs hope it will turn the tide on England’s obesity crisis which has seen rates double since the 1990s.

Injections including Ozempic and Wegovy have previously only been available for type 2 diabetes or through specialist slimming clinics.

Family doctors will now be encouraged to prescribe them in a bid to get more people on the meds.

Experts hope widespread use will slash work sick days and boost the economy, while reducing rates of cancer, heart disease and dementia.

But demand for the drugs is already huge and NHS clinics cannot dish them out fast enough.

Who is eligible in the new rollout?

The new rollout allows GPs to prescribe tirzepatide for weight loss, starting with those patients whose weight places them at greatest health risk.

Top of the list will be those with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher (or 37.5 if from a minority ethnic background) and four weight-related health conditions.

A BMI of 40 is roughly equal to weighing 16st (102kg) for an average height 5’3” woman, or 19st 6lbs (123kg) for an average 5’9” man.

Weight-related conditions include high cholesterolhigh blood pressure, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea and heart disease.

Patients will likely be expected to have tried diet and exercise first before being offered a jab.

Many are likely to miss out, as some 13.5million adults in England are obese but only 3.4million are estimated to be eligible in the rollout.

Professor Kamila Hawthorne, chair of the Royal College of GPs, said: “Currently only patients who meet certain criteria – those who could benefit most – are eligible to be prescribed weight loss drugs on the NHS, and GPs will also need to follow local guidelines when prescribing.

“If your practice advises you that they won’t be able to provide weight loss medication, these will likely be the reasons why.

“We appreciate the idea of weight loss medication is an attractive prospect to many patients – and they do have a lot of potential benefits for patients and may be a valuable tool as we try to tackle obesity at a national level – but it’s important these medications aren’t seen as a silver bullet.

“Weight loss drugs do not come without risk, they can cause side effects which range in seriousness, and they won’t be suitable for everyone.

“It’s important we don’t lose sight of the role lifestyle factors play in achieving a healthy weight.

“The roll out of weight loss medications as a treatment for obesity must not come at the expense of other weight loss services.”

If you are eligible but your GP denies you a prescription, you may be able to ask for a referral to specialist weight management services.

Known as tier 2 and tier 3 weight management services, they may prescribe the jabs after other weight loss attempts.

Many people are expected to find it easier to go private, with the injections widely available from high street pharmacies like Boots, Superdrug, and even Asda.

There are also numerous online pharmacies offering the drugs.

Buying the drugs online might seem like the faster fix – but buyer beware.

Slimming success stories are everywhere but so, too, are tales of horror.

Many patients have been duped by dodgy sellers, suffered severe side effects or even died after taking jabs they bought online.

Bargain prices, easy tick-box applications, or prescriptions with no follow-up, should all be red flags to online shoppers.

BBC make major change to Wimbledon coverage that risks upsetting tennis fans

THE BBC’S Wimbledon highlights show is set to be moved to a “graveyard slot” next week.

Fans have become used to watching “Today at Wimbledon” during the Championships since the programme’s launch in 1990.

Qasa Alom has presented Today at Wimbledon since 2023[/caption]

The highlights show has typically commenced between 8pm and 9pm over the years, with Qasa Alom replacing Clare Balding as host in 2023.

Last year’s programming schedule was disrupted by a series of late finishes on Centre Court due to bad weather.

With play on the main courts often continuing beyond 8pm, the BBC’s coverage typically decided to stick with the live action.

Per the Telegraph, Beeb chiefs have decided to move their TV slot for Today at Wimbledon to 11:55pm for day one at the Championships.

The show will be recorded earlier and made available online from 9pm during the first week of the tournament, but won’t be broadcast on TV until what the Telegraph describe as the “graveyard slot”.

BBC chiefs say that their highlights programme will begin “after live play ends”.

And it will be shown on BBC Two.

During the second week of the tournament, Today at Wimbledon will return to a more familiar slot.

A BBC spokesperson told SunSport: “Live Wimbledon coverage is scheduled to air on BBC One or BBC Two until 10pm in the first week, and until 9pm from the second week, when matches typically finish earlier.

“We wouldn’t show highlights on another channel during live play, so Today at Wimbledon will be available on BBC iPlayer and scheduled on BBC Two later in the evening, depending on when play ends.

“It’s currently set for 8pm from Tuesday 8th to Friday 11th July, when earlier finishes are expected.”

Isa Guha will present main coverage from SW19 each morning, with Balding taking over as the action moves to BBC One during the afternoon.

Alom will continue to present Today at Wimbledon.

The BBC have confirmed their commentary team for the Championships.

Usual suspects including John McEnroe, Tim Henman and Martina Navratilova will all be involved.

But there is no place for Nick Kyrgios, who featured on the Beeb’s coverage last year, or Andy Murray – who has not yet been tempted into punditry since hanging up his racquet.

Busy Dublin city street closes to traffic for good in days with new north-south route in rule change affecting thousands

A BUSY Dublin street is set to close to traffic in days as a new rule change comes in.

Dublin City Council has announced that the transformation of Parliament Street will begin on Friday, July 4.

There will be a market held to celebrate the change.

And family-friendly events are scheduled to take place every weekend throughout the month, starting from July 5.

It’s believed that up to 23,000 people pass through the street on a daily basis.

This new measure will permanently close the space to traffic, reallocating it to walking and cycling.

It will also provide green and public seating.

The council said: “This space will provide an attractive north-south pedestrian and cycle route between City Hall and Bolton Street.”

It will link with Capel Street as well as between the east and west areas of Temple Bar.

In May 2025, 90 per cent of respondents to a survey said they were in favour of enhancing public space and enabling two-way cycling.

The presentation to the South East Area committee showed a positive reaction, as the majority said they had a desire for fewer cars and more space for people.

People referenced the success of Capel Street as an example, citing the increased vibrancy, improved atmosphere and greater footfall as positives for local businesses.

SAFER AREA

They mentioned that the proposed measures would make the area safer and more pleasant to walk and cycle through.

It would also encourage families and children to visit, with outdoor seating perfect for socialising and community events.

Works on seating, planting and surfacing will begin on July 7 and will continue through the summer.

It is the third measure in the Dublin City Transport Plan 2023.

ALL CHANGES

Dublin City Council revealed that the traffic movements in the area will be:

  • Between Essex Quay and Essex Gate – this section of Parliament Street will be permanently Traffic Free with only pedestrians and cyclists permitted in this space. The road level in this section will also be raised to the existing kerb level.
  • The current west to east traffic flow between Essex Gate and Essex Street East will remain open for all vehicles at all times.
  • The section of Parliament Street between Essex Gate and Lord Edward Street will be Traffic Free with deliveries allowed between 6am and 11am daily.
  • Two-way cycling will be permitted on Parliament Street.
  • A new two-way cycling link will be created on the east side of Grattan Bridge. The traffic lanes will be reduced to one right turn lane only on the bridge.
  • A two-way cycling link will be created on the east side of Capel Street between the quays and Strand Street Little. Northbound cycling will also be permitted on Capel Street to complete a full 2 way cycling link between Dame Street and Bolton Street.

Here are nine of the towns where you will find a Wetherspoons pubs serving Worthington’s beer for less than a quid.

Dudley

The Full Moon in Dudley opened as a Wetherspoons pub in 1996, transforming a previous pizza restaurant.

It is one of the many pubs that have moon in the name, which originated from George Orwell, who named his fictional pub ‘Moon Under Water’.

But Dudley is also known for being the home of the Black Country Living Museum, which lets guests go ‘back in time’ with replica high streets as old as 1850s.

There is also the free-to-visit Dudley Museum and Art Gallery right n next door, with dinosaurs and fossils to explore.

And history buffs will love Dudley Castle, dating back to 1530 with limestone tunnels underneath to explore.

Need somewhere cheap to stay? There is an affordable Travelodge hotel with rooms from £27.

Wath-upon-Dearne

The small town of Wath-upon-Dearne is found in South Yorkshire.

There is Wath Wood and Manvers Lake and nature park for outdoorsy tourists who want a scenic walk, or a number of adventure attractions such as indoor karting and the Magna Science Adventure Centre.

But the cheap 99p pints are found at The Church House which opened as a Wetherspoons in 2000.

Map of UK towns with Wetherspoon pubs serving 99p pints.
We’ve rounded up the nine towns in the UK where the Wetherspoons have 99p pints

Built as Cross House in 1810, it was consecrated by the Archbishop of York before becoming a pub in the 1980s.

There is a cheap Holiday Inn in town, as well as a Premier Inn with rooms under £100.

Batley

Batley, a market town near Leeds, also has 99p beers at The Union Rooms.

The Wetherspoons pub is one of the most beautiful in the UK from the outside, built in a grand Victorian bank.

Otherwise the town is known for its Victorian architecture as well as Basghaw Museum, set in a Victorian gothic mansion set in 36 acres of woodlands and parks.

It was once famous for Batley Varity Club which attracted everyone from Tom Jones to Louis Armstrong, although this closed in the 1970s.

Leigh

One of Leigh’s most beautiful buildings is the The Thomas Burke Wetherspoons, which is built in a former cinema.

Along with 99p beers, the historic building opened in 1908 as the Grand Theatre and Hippodrome, before turning into an Odeon in the 1950s.

Elsewhere in the town there is The Turnpike Gallery for art lovers, while nature fans can head to the Pennington Flash Nature Reserve to spot everything from deer to endangered birds.

One of the cheapest hotels in town is the Holiday Inn, or opt for The Greyhound Hotel with £42 rooms.

Gateshead

The town of Gateshead has more to it than cheap pints at the Wetherspoons Tilley Stone pub.

It is famous for being home to the iconic Angel of the North statue, the largest of its kind in the world and seen by more than 33million people a year.

Gateshead also has beautiful outdoor space – one of it’s most beautiful buildings is the Victorian Saltwell Park, with 55 acres of gardens, woods and boating lakes as well as the Georgian landscape garden Gibside.

You aren’t short of cheap hotel rooms either, with Premier Inns and Travelodges in town.

Driffield

The Wetherspoons pub The Benjamin Fawcett is built in industrial print store, and even has an outdoor beer garden.

And most people visiting the town explore the nearby Sledmere House, a Georgian house with deer park as well as Burton Agnes Hall, which was built in 1173.

Nicknamed the Capital of the Wolds in Yorkshire, it is the burial home of Aldfrith, the King of Northumbria, who died in 705.

The town has few hotels, with Forty One having £105 rooms, or the fancier four-star Highfield House.

Bedlington

While there are many Red Lion pubs in the UK, the Wetherspoons in Bedlington is another cheap pint location.

And one of the best places for a walk after a beer is the Bedlington Country Park, with kids play areas, woodlands and horse trails.

Or opt for a day of golfing at the Bedlingtonshire 18 Hole Golf Course on the edge of Humford Woods.

Due to being a small town, you won’t find any chain hotels for the night, but there are a number of B&Bs.

Crook

Despite being small in size, the market town of Crook near Durham has a surprising number of pubs.

There is the gastropub The Copper Mine as well as The Kings and The Surtees.

But if you are on a budget, the Wetherspoons The Horse Shoe Inn is the cheaper option.

If you need somewhere to stay you have just one option, which is the three-star The Crook Hotel, or stay just outside of town at the four-star Dowfold House.

Byker

While it doesn’t look like much from the outside, The High Main Wetherspoons has a great beer garden to take your 99p pint.

And the district of Byker is mainly known for being the setting of the BBC TV series Byker Grove.

Not only that, but it is home to the modernist Byker Wall estate, now a Grade II listed building.

There aren’t any hotels in the district so you will have to stay in the centre of Newcastle, with everything from Premier Inn to Travelodge as well as Hilton, Leonard and INNside hotels.

Why Love Island’s Helena holding out for Harry will RUIN her career – and what he told me that proves he’ll never change

IT is a scenario we’ve all witnessed – or perhaps even lived through ourselves.

Boy meets girl. Boy cheats on girl. Girl tells friends they’re definitely over. Girl secretly thinks she can change boy. Girl takes boy back. Boy doesn’t change.

X / @LoveIsland
The tearful footballer said of his former partner ‘she can’t even be around me’[/caption]

You can change the genders whichever way around, but regardless, we’re about half way through this storyline so far with Love Island’s Helena and Harry.

The couple were over before they began because of the footballer’s wandering eye, with Helena moaning about being made to look like a mug.

She appeared to have conveniently forgotten however, about running to the Hideaway with Harry while he was coupled up with Shakirajust 56 hours after meeting.

Despite an intimate night in the boudoir, Harry then snogged saucy sexpot Yasmin behind Helena’s back before ending up back with Shakira again.

Through tears last night, Harry admitted to having regrets about ‘cheating’ on Helena, who has barely been able to look at him since.

But before Helena could take him back, she was whisked away for a sleepover with bombshell Giorgio.

He’s not the air stewardesses’ usual type, but he’s the perfect distraction to stop Helena reuniting with Harry.

I have no doubt Helena will end up back with Harry in a storyline set to rumble on this series, but I’m here to warn her that holding out for him will RUIN her career.

Aside from her obvious similarities to Love Island legend Olivia Attwood, Helena’s got the potential to be a stand-out star of the series thanks to her hilarious wit and bombshell beauty.

She had the villa in hysterics when, during a game of Spin the Bottle, she dared ex Harry “to go home”.

But if she doesn’t stick to her guns and stay far away from Harry, she’s going to come across more like pushover Chloe Burrows who kept going back for Toby Aromolaran than brave Liberty Poole who dumped Jake Cornish and left the villa on her own accord.

By proving she knows her worth and can resist Harry’s temptation, Helena will secure herself an army of female fans they can look up to.

She’ll be able to capitalise on this by landing lucrative deals with empowering female brands instead of facing heartbreak once they’re out the villa when Harry inevitably cheats.

I say this because a leopard never changes its spots – and if he’s already untrustworthy while living 24/7 under the same roof, then I don’t hold out much hope.

Helena and Harry from Love Island sitting on a couch and talking.
ITV
Helena read Harry the riot act and told him they can’t be friends[/caption]

My assumption is also based on what Harry told me before going into Love Island.

While the 30-year-old was in isolation days before the series launch, Harry’s ex said he dumped her for Love Island – despite claiming he was going to Bali for the summer.

When I confronted him about this, Harry played Mr Innocent.

“Oh that sounds so terrible, wow,” he exclaimed.

“No, we were casually dating and I told her I was going away for the summer and we left it there. I didn’t ‘dump’ anyone.”

In fact, Harry went on to rubbish the idea he was as much of a “player” in dating as he was on the pitch.

“I think that is the reputation footballers get, but I can only be myself and that’s not who I am,” Harry insisted to me.

“I’m not a player.

“I’m 30. I’ve got a mullet. I’m ready for something serious.”

As he said this, with a twinkle in his eye and dimple in his smile, it was difficult not to fall for Harry’s charm.

But Helena needs to be strong and resist – or face being played by a player who has no intention of settling down.
