Steven Gerrard ‘lined up for immediate return to management’ with worst club in English professional football

STEVEN GERRARD is the new name on the wanted list at the worst club in English pro football.

Carlisle United are considering a shock approach for the Liverpool legend, who quit his post at Saudi side Al-Ettifaq last week.

Gerrard, who has managed Rangers and Aston Villa, left a lucrative role with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq after 18 months in charge.

But the iconic midfielder could switch the Middle East for Cumbria.

Carlisle are looking for a boss to save them from EFL relegation after sacking manager Mike Williamson on Monday morning.

In his 25 games in the dugout, Williamson managed just five wins, six draws and 14 defeats – a win rate of a mere 20 per cent.

But the club’s American owners have raised the unlikely prospect of Gerrard taking over.

Carlisle are on course to drop out of the football league as they sit five points adrift of safety at the foot of the League Two table.

Ex-Bolton boss Ian Evatt is the bookmakers’ favourite to takeover – but sources have disclosed that the Americans are eyeing Gerrard.

Carlisle pulled the trigger on ex-Newcastle defender and Gateshead boss Williamson just five days before deadline day.

Meanwhile, 12 players have been bought in the winter window as the club scramble in relegation scrap with Morecambe and Tranmere.

In August, they sacked Paul Simpson a day after the summer window had closed. Simpson had also signed 12 players before deadline.

In his third full-season in charge, Gerrard led Rangers to a first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years in the 2020-21 season.

The former England captain replaced Dean Smith at Villa Park in November 2021 but was sacked 11 months later following 13 wins in 40 games.

In his first season at Al-Ettifaq, which does not benefit from government funding, he guided his new side to sixth.

However, despite signing a new contract last year, he left by mutual consent with the team placed 12th out of 16, having won 23 of 59 matches.

Shane Lowry rockets up Official World Golf Rankings and Ryder Cup ladder after AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Lowry finished second to pal Rory McIlroy in the ‘Signature’ event in California

The Clara star pocketed a cool $2,160,000 for his runner-up position behind Ryder Cup pal McIlroy.

Signature events offer a massive $20m purse, along with huge FedEx Cup and OWGR points.

Holywood hotshot McIlroy finished on a total of -21, two strokes clear of Lowry in second place, taking home a whopping $3.4m.

Lowry, whose best-ever world ranking came after he won the 2019 Open Championship, surged to number 16 that year.

Going into last week’s event in California at the iconic Pebble Beach, he was ranked number 28, but now he’s jumped ten places to 18 in the official world rankings.

He’s also leapt up to ninth on the FedEx Cup ladder after missing the cut two weeks ago at the Farmers Insurance Open.

He also gained vital Ryder Cup points as he shot up to fourth on the European qualifying table.

McIlroy leads the way ahead of Tyrrell Hatton, Rasmus Højgaard, and Shane Lowry.

The iconic team event gets underway in September at Bethpage Black GC in New York.

Rory McIlroy remains in third place in the world rankings but is hot on the heels of Xander Schauffele after his first PGA Tour win of the season.

Scottie Scheffler remains way out in front at the top of the rankings.

And, like McIlroy, the event was the American’s first PGA Tour start of the 2025 season.

The two-time major winner returned after a cooking accident that left him requiring surgery.

Scheffler finished T9 at the event, six shots behind McIlroy’s winning score.

The PGA Tour heads to Phoenix this week for the WM Open.

Huge leap in search for aliens after ‘building blocks for LIFE’ found on ancient asteroid Bennu from lost watery world

HUMANS have come a step closer to finding aliens after the “building blocks for life” were discovered by scientists on an asteroid.

NASA’s Osiris Rex spacecraft had grabbed parts of the ancient Bennu asteroid and uncovered a rich set of minerals and compounds which could show signs of life.

The samples were collected in October 2020 and the capsule came back to Earth in 2023[/caption] Illustration of NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission collecting samples from the Bennu asteroid, with key findings highlighted.

The spacecraft collected samples from this ancient space object on 20 October 2020.

Scientists started examining the samples after the craft landed back on Earth in October 2023.

Two years of tests revealed the extraordinary discovery made from this ancient asteroid.

Bennu is a special space find as it is carbon rich and in close proximity to Earth – meaning it could allow us to look into the early stages of our Solar System.

Several crucial components for life were discovered in the spoon-sized amount of dust taken from the asteroid.

Part of this included some of the “building blocks of life”.

Firstly, scientists found 14 of the 20 amino acids that are used to make life on Earth.

Amino acids are important as they form proteins which living beings use for nearly every movement or bodily function.

A high abundance of ammonia and formaldehyde were also found, which react together to form amino acids.

Researchers also discovered all five nucleobases needed to make DNA and RNA.

Another remarkable discovery from Bennu’s samples could indicate that water was once present on the rock.

Salt minerals, which form when water evaporates from brine, were also present.

This is key as a wet environment is absolutely necessary to form life.

These remarkable discoveries do not confirm that life ever existed on Bennu or in the early Solar System.

Despite this, scientists revealed how this discovery could be a huge step in figuring out whether alien life ever existed, according to BBC Science Focus.

Sean McMahon, the co-director of the UK Centre for Astrobiology, said: We often talk about building blocks of life.

“As life seems to have originated on Earth, the question is how many of these building blocks for life came from processes on Earth and how many of them came from extraterrestrial material?”

He added: “If these blocks of life on Earth did come from extraterrestrial material, they could have also landed elsewhere in the Solar System.

“If these building blocks are found in asteroids, there is every chance they were delivered to early Mars for example.”
