I live on UK’s best council estate – I wake up to the sound of cockerels & views of rolling hills, there’s no ASBOs here

OPENING my front door I breathe in the smell of red and pink roses as I watch the sun rise over our woodland-side crescent.

The only sound comes from the neighbour’s chicken coop as I hear a rooster calling out cock-a-doodle-do.

She says that a morning stroll is like a scene from The Waltons[/caption]

It’s like stepping into a scene from The Waltons as I make my way past fields and rolling hills.

However, it is not a family homestead I live on but rather a council estate and Britain’s nicest in my opinion.

I live on Parksite, in North Staffordshire’s Silverdale, a village near Stoke-on-Trent and in the suburbs of Newcastle-under-Lyme, my local market town.

While naysaying locals will be quick to tarnish its name, they’re just being snobs, if they didn’t know it was a council estate they would be fighting for a set of keys themselves.

Why do people look down on council estate tenants like me, I’ll never know – who doesn’t want a peaceful home surrounded by countryside? With cheap rent? And friendly neighbours?

I live at the top of a steep hill on a long private drive in my shared ownership bungalow and pay my way with a little journalism, and state benefits like Universal Credit and PIP.

It only costs me £380 a month and I boast two gardens to the front and back, with blossom trees and flowers, lovingly cared for & nurtured by myself and my boyfriend, an aspiring Capability Brown.

It’s not just our gardens that are green, floral and verdant with the neighbours pruning their rose bushes most mornings.

There isn’t a tower block in sight as Parksite has Keele – a small countryside University village – next door. And Scot Hay – another country village with a farm – to the other side.

I feel incredibly lucky to live on Parksite and pinch myself most days to check I’m not just living in a dream.

Aside from Parksite’s abundant nature, it is the residents that make the place.

Far from teaming with chavs and ABSO-slapped teens you find friendly families and people have time to stop and say hello when they’re taking a stroll.

I’ve even put a tangerine and fuchsia egg chair outside my front door so I can greet passersby as I smoke one of my 40-a-day ciggies.

There’s a 2.5K-strong community of local Silverdale residents on Facebook, who help each other out with missing pets, free household items, and lost bank cards and smartphones.

Far from getting mugged, on our council estate residents make it their mission to keep your valuables with you.

Not long ago, local campaigners, academics and MPs also clubbed together to get a nearby stinking landfill closed down. They finally won, and it was closed last year.

Today the air is more fragrant and the streets much cleaner here than when I lived in cities like Birmingham and London, too. The bins are always emptied on time (Hackney Council take note!)

I’ve lived on several estates in my time, here in Staffordshire and all over London and none of them are a patch on Parksite.

In London, I lived in a shared, one-bedroom council flat on the Roman Road in Bethnal Green which I rented for £75 a week. I enjoyed the fish market and cheap winkles.

But not the community. Once a car was blown-up on the estate at 2am. It was terrifying to wake up to a bang and flames lighting up the entire estate.

Another time, while a student, I lived on one of the high rises on Shepherd’s Bush Green.

While it was lovely to be in central London, the flat always stank of weed and I’d often hear next door arguing.

When I returned to Staffordshire to help care for my mother in 2010, I lived on the Highfields estate in Stafford for a year. It was cheap, but the one-bedroom flat had no flooring down and I found the grey pebbledash facade of my Cul de Sac really depressing.

It’s different here on the Parksite estate.

Visitors always notice how quiet it is: “It’s so peaceful here” They’ll coo.

What It's Really Like Growing Up On A Council Estate

Fabulous reporter, Leanne Hall, recalls what it's like growing up in social housing.

As someone who grew up in a block of flats on a council estate, there are many wild stories I could tell.

From seeing a neighbour throw dog poo at the caretaker for asking them to mow their lawn (best believe they ended up on the Jeremy Kyle show later in life) to blazing rows over packages going missing, I’ve seen it all.

While there were many times things kicked off, I really do believe most of the time it’s because families living on council estates get to know each other so well, they forget they’re neighbours and not family.

Yes, things can go from zero to 100 quickly, but you know no matter what you can rely on your neighbour to borrow some milk or watch all of the kids playing outside.

And if you ask me, it’s much nicer being in a tight community where boundaries can get crossed than never even knowing your neighbour’s name while living on a fancy street.

Thanks to support from the local council, Aspire, I’m able to afford the rent and upkeep of the property.

But the real difference from the pokey flats I once afforded is that it’s the first time I’ve had my own garden, and my own drive.

As I write this, the sun is rising over the council housing rooftops – all red-orange glow, and also rising over the green parkland and bushy trees of Silverdale. It’s so peaceful.

My favourite memories here include sitting outside when the sun’s out on my secondhand sunlounger. I’ll be in the back garden, surrounded by green and just soak it all up.

I so enjoy all the forest, all the nature, all the woodland sounds like a sparrow or the breeze among the grasses and buttercups.

The only other sound’s the tiny waterfall in the pond we’ve built to the left, overlooked by a red, Japanese Acer tree and a big silver Buddha head I bought from TK Maxx some years ago.

My boyfriend also bought a TV when he moved in but we tend to just watch the wildlife in the forest over the bank, from the bifold windows that frame our sitting room – squirrels, nuthatches, woodpeckers.

We have a birdfeeder here and can sometimes hear an owl in the dead of night.

I believe I’ll be here until I retire now and – after decades of struggling with shambolic, overpriced rentals in inferior council flats and dilapidated terraces – I finally feel complete and at peace.

Indeed, the festival season officially begins with Glastonbury, and over the next couple of months, many artists are bound to hit the headlines with their acts, some more controversial than others.

American singer Kesha recently sparked outrage following her ”vulgar” performance as she headlined the second night of pop festival Mighty Hoopla in London earlier in June.

While singing new track Boy Crazy the TiK ToK hitmaker, 38, took to her hands and knees and suggestively chomped on a banana which a male dancer held between his legs.

The songstress was sporting a red latex catsuit and knee high boots as she seemingly mimicked oral sex for the fans.

A clip of the X-rated display was shared on Instagram with critics rushing to the comments where branded Kesha ”desperate for attention”, Mail Online reported.

”That’s vulgar”, one fumed.

”Ohh she’s desperate for attention,” another slammed the artist.

”Music is support to be art not porn!! What the heck!!” a third shamed the singer.

As thousands of festival-goers are eagerly awaiting their favourite musicians and bands to take over the Worthy Farm, here are the most racy stage moments of all time – from steamy smooches to stimulating masturbation.

Hosting the American Music Awards in Las Vegas, J-Lo proved she’s definitely left ex-hubby Ben Affleck in the past by kissing not one, but three of her dancers – men and women – during an X-rated routine.

The surprise snogs happened as the mother-of-two, 55, writhed on stage to Teddy Swims’ Lose Control during a medley of hits by the night’s nominees, and sparked a flurry of comments on social media.

Some branded Jennifer‘s performance “embarrassing” while others questioned whether she’d “lost the plot”.

Another viewer wrote: “Just looked up from my phone and JENNIFER LOPEZ IS KISSING A GIRL?!?!”

Others then suggested the Maid In Manhattan actress had staged the routine intentionally to make ex husband Ben Affleck jealous, after their divorce was finalised.

When Miley Cyrus, now 32, was transitioning from Disney child star to a pop icon, she was doing everything in her power to distance herself from her role as Hannah Montana.

To achieve this, the Tennessee-born singer leaned a lot on an image change that involved a fair amount of twerking.

Her new love of expression was on full display in her 2013 performance with fellow star Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards, where they sang We Can’t Stop and Blurred Lines.

The jaw-dropping acts featured teddy bears and many sexual innuendos involving foam fingers that made this performance controversial and shocking.

Miley, who officially separated from Liam Hemsworth six years later, in 2019, succeeded in generating upset and buzz.

The Wrecking Ball millionaire was met with huge backlash, including from the Parents Television Council that voiced concern over the ceremony’s inability to keep the performances clean.

BRITs viewers threatened to call Ofcom as the latest pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter stripped to sexy lingerie for a very steamy performance.

The Espresso star was also seen having a close encounter with a dancer dressed as a soldier wearing a bearskin hat during the show, broadcast live on ITV.

Performing in revealing lace lingerie, including thigh harnesses, Sabrina – who was sat provocatively on a heart-shaped bed – embraced the innuendo-filled nature of her music.

However, not everyone was impressed, with some expressing their disapproval on social media, claiming the performance was too risqué for a primetime audience.

In total, the awards ceremony prompted a whopping 825 complaints to media watchdog Ofcom, with the majority involving Sabrina’s pre-watershed opening performance, BBC reported.

‘I truly hope no children were watching’

Grammys host Trevor Noah prepared the audience ahead of the raunchy act[/caption]

It’s the hit that got everyone talking five years ago – so it comes as no surprise that Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion caused outrage when they were performing WAP at the 2020 Grammy Awards.

Grammys host Trevor Noah prepared the audience ahead of the raunchy act, advising: “If you have small children in the room, just tell them it’s a song about giving a cat a bath.”

Donning a neon purple two-piece, former stripper Cardi B, 32, kicked off the song by showing off her curves against a pole, before being joined by a group of backup dancers.

Megan Thee Stallion, 30, then hit the stage for her verse in a tight purple one-piece.

The two later appeared on a massive bed, crawling and intertwining their legs as they danced together, USA Today reported.

Some social media users expressed concern for kids who may have been watching the awards show[/caption]

But while the risqué performance earned praise from fans online, plenty of critics argued it was inappropriate.

“I’m a pretty laid back person, but having WAP featured on the #GRAMMYs is absolutely disgusting and ridiculous,” wrote one X – formerly known as Twitter – user.

Some social media users expressed concern for kids who may have been watching the awards show.

“i truly hope no children were watching the WAP performance..” said another.

“WAP!! At the #GRAMMYs,” chimed in someone else.

”Really where is the reserved decency and honour for our children! There’s a time and place for everything ppl! This was neither for this song. No class #GRAMMYs.”

The 2003 MTV VMAs delivered a truly unforgettable opener when Madonna shared passionate snogs with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during a performance of her hits Like a Virgin and Hollywood.

After the pop queen locked lips with Britney, then 22, the cameras panned to Justin Timberlake, who looked anything but impressed by his ex’s antics.

The zoom-in of Justin meant viewers at home then missed the second kiss between the Hung Up hitmaker and Christina.

The provocative display, with Britney and Christina both clad in white lace corsets in a nod to Madonna’s legendary 1984 VMA performance, sparked headlines worldwide and became one of the most talked-about moments in awards show history.

The late Purple Rain singer pushed boundaries at the 1991 MTV VMAs.

During his performance of Gett Off, Prince left the audience open-mouthed with his bizarre outfit.

The yellow lace costume featured dozens of cheeky cutouts revealing his bare buttocks.

The daring ensemble, by Prince’s costume designer Stacia Lang, used illusion fabrics to suggest nudity, creating a buzz that overshadowed even the pyrotechnics on stage.

It was a shock for everyone watching — both at home and in the studio.

According to Stacia Lang, the controversial outfit actually offered less exposure than it appeared to[/caption]

“The camera seemed embarrassed,” reported the Chicago Tribune of the performance, “constantly cutting away to avoid whichever lurid scene it was stumbling across.”

But according to Stacia Lang, the controversial outfit actually offered less exposure than it appeared to.

In the latest episode of “The Prince Mixtape,” the master behind the ensemble explained that she used a thin, net-like fabric called marquisette to suggest exposed buttocks.

“There was a beautiful, white, pure, really heavy French lace that we took right away to the dyers and had that dyed bright citron yellow,” she said.

“And also (the dyer) had to dye up several fabrics that would create the illusion that his rear end was showing.”

Some of the moves included the ‘’dutty whine’’ that left many in the audience hot under the collar[/caption]

Bronchitis may have stopped Rihanna from performing at the Grammys in 2016 but she was back on full form for a raunchy live show at the Brit Awards just ten days later.

The Umbrella star and mum-of-two brought out Canadian rapper Drake as a surprise guest for her rendition of their chart-topping hit.

The Fenty Beauty face kicked off the steamy performance dressed in white tasseled trousers and sunnies as red and blue lights crisscrossed over her.

The 37-year-old was soon joined by a troupe of black-clad, twerking backing dancers before the Hotline Bling millionaire came out for his verse.

Cue plenty of X-rated moves, including the ‘’dutty whine’’, that left many in the audience hot under the collar.

The duo released the seven-minute, two-part music video for “Work” in February 2016.

The first half sees RiRi and Drake hit the dance floor in a Caribbean restaurant before getting more intimate in the club’s VIP area during the second half.

Adam Lambert – who rose to fame in 2009 after finishing as runner-up on the eighth season of American Idol – went all out for his debut American Music Awards performance the same year… and made quite the impression.

The former contestant performed his single For Your Entertainment, which critics thought to be too frisky for an award show.

The performance’s production featured the Whataya Want From Me star pulling a back-up dancer wearing a leash across the stage, bringing another dancer’s face near his groin, and kissing his male keyboard player.

Adam’s raunchy performance saw over 1,500 people complain to ABC[/caption]

Like Sabrina, Adam, 43, had more than 1,500 members of the Parents Television Council calling ABC to complain about his freedom of expression.

Adam then defended the performance, The Hollywood Reporter shared.

“Female performers have been doing this for years — pushing the envelope about sexuality — and the minute a man does it, everybody freaks out,” the openly gay singer said backstage at the awards show.

“My goal was not to p**s people off; it was to promote freedom of expression and artistic freedom.”

Drivers could receive up to £4,000** refund due to car finance scandal with 31.7 million eligible to claim

HAVE you heard about the car finance scandal?

For nearly 20 years, drivers with PCP and HP agreements were being charged higher interest rates, potentially costing them thousands of pounds.

The scandal has affected millions
getty

The missold car finance scandal could cause one of the largest compensation payouts in UK banking history.

An estimated 31.7 million drivers could be eligible to claim a refund.

Could you?

Learn why the car finance mis-selling scandal is serious and why you need to submit your claim to secure a potential payout.

What is the car finance scandal?

In 2021, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) discovered that car dealers were earning extra commission on PCP and HP finance agreements by setting higher interest rates.

The bottom line is that they earned more cash if loans were more expensive.

It turns out that the practice, known as Discretionary Commission Arrangements (DCAs), had been ongoing since 2007.

Fast forward to today, and any PCP or HP agreement signed between 2007 and the end of January 2021 could have been mis-sold.

During this period, an estimated 31.7 million PCP and HP finance deals were agreed. That’s about 99% of total car finance agreements.

All of these drivers could be eligible for mis-sold finance compensation, which is why banks and lenders have set aside billions of pounds to deal with claims.

Who is eligible for a refund?

Potentially anyone who bought a car, motorbike, or van with a PCP or HP finance agreement between 2007 and January 28, 2021, when the practice was banned, could be eligible for a payout.

You can even make a claim if you have previously been denied compensation.

Check if you could claim for mis-sold car finance below

How much could drivers receive?

The car finance mis-selling scandal is a serious problem for banks and lenders.

Drivers could be eligible for up to £4,000* for each PCP or HP agreement they took out, say My Claim Group.

Data they have gathered shows that the average person could make two claims, with compensation of roughly £2,000 per claim**.

The £2,000** figure reflects the £1,100 overcharge for every £10,000 financed (estimated by the FCA) plus 8% simple interest.

Had more than two agreements? There are no limits on the number of claims that you can make as long as you’re eligible.

How to check your eligibility for a car finance scandal claim

Not all car finance agreements were mis-sold.

To find out if you’re eligible, you’ll need to find details of your HP and PCP car finance agreements and communicate directly with the lender.

Don’t worry if you can’t remember who arranged your loan agreement or provided the finance, there’s another way to claim compensation.

Claims management firms like My Claim Group can manage the whole process for you, including identifying eligible finance agreements, contacting your lender, and passing you onto a solicitor firm that could secure your compensation.

The solicitor firm will take a fee from the settlement to cover the cost of the service of up to 36%, including VAT*.

How does it work? Let’s walk you through each step below.

Get some answers to common car finance mis-selling questions.

What happens after you submit your claim?

Lenders are currently dealing with thousands – and potentially millions – of claims, so you’ll need to be patient.

Due to the high volume of claims, the FCA has given lenders until 4 December 2025 to begin communicating with claimants.

If you’ve claimed with My Claim Group, you’ll receive regular notifications about the status of your claim and the potential likelihood of a payout.

How long does the process take from application to payout?

We can’t tell you exactly how long it will be until you receive a payout (see above).

Tips for protecting yourself in future

If you’ve been caught out by the car finance mis-selling scandal, it wasn’t your fault.

While all current PCP and HP agreements will be sold legally, here are some tips to ensure you get the best deal on any finance agreement.

  • Take some time to learn about the different types of finance agreements (car loans, PCP, HP, etc.), including their benefits and drawbacks
  • Understand how to compare the costs (including APR) of any finance agreement
  • Always ask about any add-ons or additional fees you’re being charged
  • Trust your instincts and be prepared to walk away if you feel you’re being pressured to sign
  • Check the small print for any added extras that could increase costs
  • Ask for a copy of the credit agreement so you can see what you’re signing
  • Finance agreements have a 14-day cooling off period, so don’t worry if you get second thoughts, there’s time to change
