Aston Villa’s £100m stadium upgrade will create HUGE beer hall, welcome rival sport and be built in rarely-seen way

THESE are exciting times to be an Aston Villa fan – and they are about to get even better.

The club tasted Champions League football for the first time this season, with memorable victories at Villa Park over Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

Now they are progressing with plans to renovate their iconic stadium, bolstering the capacity to rival the Premier League elite while creating a giant beer hall and even hosting another sport.

THE VILLA PARK STORY

Villa Park opened in 1897 and has been Aston Villa’s home ever since after they moved from the uneven pitch of Wellington Road.

The stadium was built in the grounds of the Aston Hall stately home, owned by Sir Thomas Holte, whose name is used for the famous stand behind one goal.

The pitch now sits where an ornamental pond once took pride of place.

The original stadium took three years to build at a cost of £16,733, approximately £1.8m today, with a capacity of 40,000.

In its early years, the pitch had a cycling track around the perimeter to host cycling and athletics events.

Various renovations have taken place over the years, including an £887 terrace covering.

Plans were drawn in 1914 to fit in 120,000 fans but never materialised.

Everton’s Goodison Park inspired the two-tier design before further updates in the 1970s once Doug Ellis became chairman.

Villa Park’s capacity hit 46,000 in 1994 but reduced back to 40,310 when the Holte End became an all-seater stand by the end of that year.

The most recent renovation work was the rebuilding of the Trinity Stand in 2000, officially opened by King Charles, whose grandfather George VI opened the previous version 77 years earlier.

The current capacity is 42,918 – making Villa Park the tenth-biggest football stadium in England.

WHY NOW?

There have been long-term hopes to increase the size of Villa Park for years.

But they turned into genuine plans when the new V Sports owners took over from Tony Xia for good in 2019 and the club enjoyed promotion back to the Premier League.

Villa received planning approval from Birmingham City Council for their new development in December 2022, prompting the expansion ideas to go public.

The following year, though, the proposals to demolish the North Stand and completely rebuild it were shelved by president of business operations Chris Heck as a “bad idea” that would see the stadium’s capacity drop to 36,000 for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons.

But in December 2024, Villa announced new grand designs with artists’ impressions of what the updated Villa Park could look like with a modernised North Stand.

The timing could not have been better, coming in the year the club celebrated their 150th anniversary.

And it also coincided with the Champions League campaign, which saw Unai Emery lead his side to eighth in the league phase to book their spot in the last 16 where they saw off Club Brugge before falling to PSG in a blockbuster quarter-final.

WHAT ARE THEY PLANNING?

First and foremost, the standout plan is to redevelop the North Stand.

Villa confirmed in April 2025 that the stand will be refurbished and expanded from 5,000 to more than 12,000 seats.

The three other stands are also getting minor upgrades, too, which means the overall capacity of Villa Park will initially increase to around 50,000 – a 7,000 boost.

However, eventually the hope is to bolster that total to 52,000 in the coming years.

Ironically, even with the increases, Villa will slip down the Premier League pecking order because of Everton moving into their new 53,000-seater Hill Dickinson Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

Villa are also developing the area outside the ground, with a new “plaza” complex on the site of the current car park in front of the North Stand.

That will feature The Warehouse, a massive beer hall which will be the largest in the Premier League and a fan zone space for supporters to gather before matches.

A brand-new two-storey club shop is also in the works for fans to stock up on all their Aston Villa merchandise.

And, as part of the condition of the council’s approval, the Witton train station, located just a few hundred metres north of the ground, is also set to be rebuilt with a new footbridge, larger and safer queueing systems, improved shelters and capacity for bigger trains.

This is to accommodate double the number of passengers to 10,000 fans on a matchday.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

Villa expect the construction work to take around 24 months to complete – and are hoping it will all be done by the end of 2027.

The Warehouse is set to be ready to open by Christmas 2025, though.

Crucially, Villa are NOT planning to reduce Villa Park’s capacity while the new North Stand is built in a rarely-seen move.

The likes of Liverpool and Fulham saw their maximum attendances drop as a result of the building work.

But Villa proudly announced their “robust design process” found a way to modernise the existing North Stand “without losing any seats during the season”, meaning a full house can continue to roar the Villans on.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

As expected, the whole project will not come cheap.

Aston Villa have estimated the cost will be a minimum of £100m for the improvements to Villa Park.

The large bulk of that will go into the brand-new North Stand.

IS IT WORTH IT?

That is the big question – and it is hard to see this redevelopment being anything other than a positive for Aston Villa and the local area once the obtrusive building work is all done.

A bigger ground has two key, fundamental benefits – more fans creating a better atmosphere and more money made from selling extra tickets, refreshments and merchandise.

Villa also predict the renovation will help pump £120m annually into the local economy and create 1,700 full-time equivalent jobs.

But there are a few other major benefits.

The Warehouse will double up as a key indoor arena in the West Midlands, staging high-profile music gigs and even boxing fight nights in the new indoor arena.

Lastly, and most importantly for all football fans, the work is scheduled to be done by the end of 2027 – in time for Euro 2028.

Villa Park is one of the nine venues put forward to Uefa to stage matches when the UK and Ireland host the tournament.

Cork dad-of-three died from wasp stings while ‘picking up hedge clippings’ in garden, inquest hears as family issue plea

THE family of a man who died after being stung by wasps in his garden have warned people to be aware of the potential fatal side effects of insect stings.

Michael Sheehan was picking up hedge clipping at the rear of his Cork property when he was stung several times, an inquest heard today.

Dad-of-three Michael was gardening when he got multiple bee stings[/caption]

The 56-year-old father-of-three died at his home near Macroom last year after he received five or six wasp stings in November 2024.

Mr Sheehan, who was originally from Ballinlough in Cork city, was pronounced dead at 2.16pm on November 5, at his home in Glen Tanar, Carriganine.

His wife Carmel told an inquest that shortly after noon her husband left the study to help men who were cutting the hedge in their garden.

After a short period he came back into the home and said he was “after getting stung by a wasp”.

However, there was no cause for concern at this stage as he wasn’t showing any ill effects.

Mrs Sheehan realised there wasn’t any allergy medication in the house and decided to make the short journey one mile down the road to the chemist to pick up some Zirtek.

But when she returned home, she found her husband “face down on the kitchen floor”.

She alerted the men working in the garden who then rushed in to the house.

She told the inquest: “I saw John trying to get Mick to respond. He was sitting Mick up and slapping his face.”

Mrs Sheehan called emergency services and the Irish Community Air Ambulance from Rathcoole landed in the nearby golf club.

START PRAYING

On arrival to the home a first responder told her that if she had prayers to say it was probably the appropriate time to start them.

Mrs Sheehan said that sometime after 2pm Dr Jason van der Velde, a consultant in emergency medicine, told her that her husband had passed away.

A local priest was contacted and prayers were said in the kitchen before the deceased was brought to the morgue at Cork University Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Mrs Sheehan told Coroner Frank O’Connell her husband had no history of allergies.

WASP STINGS

Garda Don Coomey said when he arrived at the Sheehan home he was informed of the death of the retired tax consultant.

He noted that there was a small number of wasps in a nest out the back of the property.

Giving evidence, Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster said Mr Sheehan suffered around five to six wasp stings on his head, back, and arms.

She said very high levels of tryptase were recorded.

SUDDEN COLLAPSE

Elevated levels of tryptase can be a marker for severe anaphylactic reactions, including those triggered by insect stings.

Dr Bolster told members of the family that Mr Sheehan suffered a swelling of the larynx which obstructed his breathing causing him to “collapse very suddenly”.

She said he suffered a massive allergic reaction and didn’t think that “anything could have been done” to change the outcome.

The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death.

He said it was “most unfortunate” that Mr Sheehan died when he was “innocently picking up hedge clippings”.

He offered his condolences to the Sheehan family on the loss of a much loved father and husband.

Inspector Mary Skehan also offered her heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s wife, his children – Conor, Katie, and Aine – and the extended Sheehan family.

Speaking after the inquest members of the Sheehan family urged the public to be aware of possible side effects of insect stings.

They said that people who know they have an allergic reaction to wasp or bee stings should consider investing in EpiPens.

Rory McIlroy claims he ‘needs a break mentally’ as golf icon prepares for The Open

MASTERS champion Rory McIlroy has revealed that he plans to fly back to the UK for a break following a whirlwind few months in the States.

The 36-year-old ended his 11-year wait for a Masters title earlier this year, beating Justin Rose to the green jacket in Augusta.

In winning the prestigious tournament, he became just the sixth male golfer to achieve a career Grand Slam.

But the Northern Irishman has experienced a dip in form over the last two months.

He finished 19th at the US Open and sixth at the Travelers Championship on Sunday.

Following a disappointing few weeks, McIlroy is now looking forward to returning home with his wife, Erica, and four-year-old daughter, Poppy, for a well-earned break.

He said: “I think more so than anything else it’ll just be good for me mentally to take a little bit of a break and get back to my neck of the woods, get back to the UK for a little bit.

“I’m excited for that and I’ve alluded to the fact I probably haven’t taken enough time off or time to reflect after what happened in April.

“So I’m excited to do a little bit of that over these next two weeks.”

He also said: “I feel like I live two different lives.

“I’m a dad and a husband when I’m away from here, and then I’m who I am when I’m here.

“It’s always nice to get away and feel a bit of normality.”

McIlroy snubbed the press after his first two rounds at the US Open earlier this month.

He then didn’t hold back when explaining the reason behind his hiatus.

“It’s just frustration with you guys [some sections of the media],” the golf ace said.

“I have been totally available for the past number of years.

“That [driver issue] was a part of it, but at Augusta, I skipped you guys on Thursday.

“It’s not out of the ordinary as I’ve done it before, but I am doing it a little more often.

“I feel like I’ve earned the right to do whatever I want to do.”

Half a dozen CWC fixtures have been halted by thunder, lightning and rain Stateside, despite the sizzling heat.

So the DAZN presenter’s 9.2million Instagram followers were grateful for Diletta sharing serene snaps.

The wife of ex-Liverpool keeper Loris Karius is covering the controversial 64-team tournament.

And she chose a backless, sleeveless white top for her pics as she wrote: “Club World Cup Show! Let’s go.”

Diletta also ditched her bra – but hopefully not her brolly, given the downpours besetting the CWC.

The Italian opted for pinstripe black trousers as she shared behind-the-scenes pics and clips from the studio.

At one point she winked to the camera – possibly one reason likes for her post soared beyond 100,000.

And whereas the weather in the USA for the CWC might have been unpredictable, the opposite is true for the reaction to Diletta‘s snaps.

Amid all the much-expected excitement, the 33-year-old was called “quite possibly the prettiest human being I have ever seen!”

And even though we’re only midway through the tournament, all bets are already off for one admirer.

He told Diletta: “You’ve already won the world.”

More foreseeable fervour flowed in as she was praised for doing a “brilliant job”.

One observer surveyed Diletta’s minimal blouse and concluded: “It’s going to be cool with this top” after surveying Diletta’s minimal blouse.

“Fantastic and beautiful” as well as “gorgeous” were other verdicts.

Just days earlier Diletta had shared a fun contrast to her elegant studio look – as she posed in a bikini in a Miami swimming pool.

She was floating on an inflatable pink flamingo.

Which surely proves anyone ridiculous enough to say her pics lack variety barely has a leg to stand on.

Shock moment Jamie Laing and pregnant Sophie Habboo MOCK Meghan and Harry’s dancing video from inside Buckingham Palace

JAMIE Laing and his pregnant wife Sophie Habboo have caused shock among fans after mocking Meghan and Harry’s dancing video – from inside Buckingham Palace.

The former Made In Chelsea stars filmed themselves recreating the Sussexes’ infamous “Baby Mama” dance on the Grand Staircase.

The clip shows them twerking and laughing at the royal residence, just metres from portraits of senior royals.

Jamie posted the video to his 1.6 million Instagram followers, writing: “They said we couldn’t film in Buckingham Palace.”

Sophie, wearing a pastel yellow halter-neck dress, showed off her growing baby bump as Laing pointed to it.

The pair danced to Starrkeisha’s Baby Mama, the same track used in Meghan and Harry’s original clip.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex recorded their version in 2020, shortly before Meghan gave birth to Princess Lilibet.

She posted it earlier this month to mark their daughter’s fourth birthday.

While Jamie and Sophie’s video could have sparked a royal backlash, palace aides appeared to see the funny side.

The Royal Family’s official Instagram account commented: “We see you,” adding a pair of eye and wink emojis.

The King’s Trust, which hosted the reception, also responded. “All of our attendees are very well behaved,” it joked, with a laughing emoji.

Fearne Cotton, who also attended the event, teased Jamie in the comments, writing: “You also had your pap camera out with a flash. Think of what the flash has done to those priceless paintings.”

Fans were quick to react – with one joking: “When you get to do it at the Palace but Harry and Meghan couldn’t lol.”

Another added: “In a world at times worrying and serious, this comment was so needed.”

The King’s Trust, set up by King Charles in 1976, supports disadvantaged young people.

It has helped more than a million into work, education or training.

Jamie and Sophie were just two of several high-profile guests at the palace event, alongside George and Amal Clooney.

The ex-Suits actress defended her decision to post the personal footage[/caption]

The reception honoured this year’s award winners – young people who have turned their lives around with help from the charity.

Meghan posted the footage earlier this month showing her and Prince Harry dancing in a hospital room as she tried to induce daughter Lilibet’s birth in 2021.

But conspiracy theorists bizarrely claimed that Meghan’s bump was not real, suggesting she was wearing a prosthetic pregnant belly in the clip.

Almost a fortnight after sharing the 80-second video with her three million followers on Instagram, the ex-Suits actress defended her decision to post the personal footage.

She called on people to “tell the truth” about her and claimed that the video was a chance for her to share behind the scenes of her “authentic” life.

Speaking on Dragon’s Den star Emma Grede on the entrepreneur’s Aspire podcast, she said: “You have to be authentic.

“Did you see my “Baby Momma” dance? That wasn’t yesterday, that was four years ago.

“It’s a really great reminder that with all the noise or whatever people do, there’s still a whole life – a real, authentic, fun life – that’s happening behind the scenes.

“I’m just grateful that now, being back on social as well, I have a place where I can share it on my own terms.”

The footage – released to celebrate Lilibet’s fourth birthday on June 3 – showed heavily pregnant Meghan making rowing movements and shimmying her shoulders beside the hospital bed.

Prince Harry also shuffles into view in a hoodie to the strains of then-viral pregnancy hit The Baby Momma Dance.

Podcast host Emma, founding partner of SKIMS and CEO of Good American, admitted she was shocked to see Prince Harry dancing in the video.

She joked: “We maybe watched it like 20 times yesterday.

“I was like, is that Prince Harry there with the fingers? I was like, okay, Meghan and Harry, let’s go.

“But that’s you, right? That’s you in a way that we kind of haven’t been able to see you before.”

Emma Grede’s Aspire episode with Meghan is set to air today.

She posted it on the social media platform alongside the caption: “Four years ago today, this also happened.

Meghan Markle's ventures after stepping down as a working royal

THE Duchess of Sussex has kept busy since stepping down as a senior working royal in 2020 and relocating to California. Here are some of her business ventures...

  • Netflix Deal – Producing content like Harry & Meghan and With Love, Meghan.
  • Archetypes Podcast – Former Spotify show on female stereotypes.
  • Clevr Blends – Investment in a women-owned wellness latte brand.

“Both of our children were a week past their due dates… so when spicy food, all that walking, and acupuncture didn’t work – there was only one thing left to do!”

But it was slammed by royal experts as cringey and “hard to watch”.

Commmentator Ingrid Seward accused The Sussexes of invading their own privacy.

She told The Sun: “They can do what they like but why put it online?

“Does Meghan have no boundaries? I think it’s vulgar, unnecessary, attention-seeking.

“They make such a point about privacy and security and then they put stuff out there. Meghan can’t resist putting it out there.

“I think it’s completely hypocritical for everything she stands for. It’s very embarrassing.”

Meghan’s comments came after she shared a rare personal video showing Archie and Lilibet to wish Harry a happy Father’s Day.

The compilation showed photos and videos of Harry laughing, dancing and spending time with his children through the years.

Her Father’s Day tribute to husband Harry followed the same pattern with the clips of her kids featuring the back of their heads only.

Four dumped Love Island stars revealed as mass dumping rocks the villa

LOVE Island has revealed which four islanders have been dumped from the villa.

Tonight’s nail biting episode saw Maya Jama enter the sleepover villa, where she had some big news for Helena, Dejon, Emily and Remell.

Helena, Emily, Dejon and Remell had to decide whether to stick or twist

In a shock twist, Maya told them that they have to decide if they want to stick in their current couple or recouple with a bombshell.

“Having some time away has allowed you to explore new connections, but are these connections stronger than what you have with your current partner?”  she said.

The foursome then had to decide whether they head back to the villa alone, or with one of the newcomers, Giorgio, Will, Poppy and Caprice.

In the end, only Helena decided to recouple and opted to go back with Giorgio.

Dejon decided to stick with Meg, despite kissing Caprice during his time at the sleepover villa.

Remell hesitated but chose to stick with Alima, even though he told Poppy earlier he felt different with her and they shared a snog.

That left Emily, who opted to stay with Conor- unaware of his growing connection with Megan back in the main villa – over new boy Will.

As a result of Helena’s decision, Shea found himself single and a text back to the original villa broke the news.

The four islanders going home were Shea, as well as three of the bombshells: Poppy, Caprice and Will.

While Helena was the only one to recouple, she has admitted she is still pining for Harry.

Chatting with Emily before having to make her decision, she told her she was attracted to Giorgio but was still thinking about Harry.

Earlier in the evening, it had looked like Remell and Dejon might be swayed by the new girls too.

During a game of Truth or Dare, Dejon dared Remell to kiss an islander of his choice and he plumped for Poppy.

Poppy then kissed Dejon after being dared to smooch the person she’s most attracted to other than the person she chose.

Poppy, Caprice and Will were also sent packing

When Dejon was later dared to kiss the Islander he’s most attracted to, he locked lips with Caprice and they both rated the smooch 10/10.

When quizzed by Dejon who he would chose between Alima and Poppy, Remell paused for a few moments and then opted for Poppy. asks Remell who he would choose between Alima and Poppy if there was a recoupling and he hesitates but says Poppy.

And in a subsequent talk with his pal round the firepit, Remell went on to confess: “I’m loving the chats with Poppy, flirty, chill…I don’t want to leave with regrets which is why I’m giving Poppy the time of day.”

Dejon responded: “You’ve got to look long term… whoever you see a long term future with, that’s the one you pursue.”

On his own love triangle after snogging Caprice, Dejon said: “What me and Caprice have could be something good, but what me and Meg have is something special.”

Later that night, Remell pulled Poppy for a chat.

“I’ve been comfy around you, it’s the first time in the Villa that I’ve felt like this so it’s telling me something,” he told her before they snogged again.

So it came as something of a shock when he eventually chose to stick with Alima instead.

It’s only a matter of time, however, before Alima learns what he has been up to. How will she react?

Love Island continues at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
