Incredible plans for huge new 70,000-seater stadium made of WOOD – but they need to demolish the iconic old ground first

INCREDIBLE new plans to re-build one of the US’ most iconic stadiums have been unveiled – but the beloved old ground will need to go first.

The RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. was once host to the biggest sports events on the planet, including the soccer World Cup and Olympic Games.

Concept art shows a football stadium that would seat 70,000 people with a transparent dome on the top of it[/caption]

A Boston architecture firm, KaTO Architecture, has revealed what their new structure would look like, which would be made of mass timber.

This ambitious design would be the first structure of its kind to be built out of wood.

Amazing images show the new-and-improved RFK Stadium site, with massive lights taking up the skyline, and surrounding housing adding dimension to an already imposing development.

Lead architect Kyle Murphy said: “We don’t have a dedicated national venue here and that would be the ideal place to do that – when you think about Wembley Stadium in England, Mexico has Estadio Azteca.

“We’ve been trying to pitch this as something that could be about national pride beyond just being of value to a specific team or certain city.”

The plan lays out a football stadium that would seat 70,000 people with a transparent dome on the top of it.

The west-facing window, in particular, is designed to provide a direct line of sight to the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument, which is only two miles away.

The seating bowl inside the stadium is divided into multiple levels, with the stands behind the end zones intentionally lower.

This is done to make way for two massive windows offering panoramic views of the surroundings.

This is across 177 acres of land, with a cluster of new waterfront residences and a pedestrian pathway on the Anacostia River also included in the proposal.

It’s been reported that around 2,000 housing units and new retail and public spaces would be built adjacent to the stadium.

A spokesperson for Mayor Muriel Bowser commented: “It is a good day for D.C. when we finally have control of our own destiny at the RFK campus.

“We are ready and optimistic about unlocking the full potential of this space, and with more than 170 acres of land we can do it all – deliver housing, economic opportunity, green space, recreation, sports, and more.”

However, the road to realizing this bold vision is long, and requires lots of things to go in KaTO’s favor.

Before the project can be started, the old RFK Stadium, which has been abandoned for years, will have to be demolished.

This relies on the approval of the city council and the issue of public funding to finance the building.

Talks are already underway between the Washington Commanders and Disctrif Officials to see if they can agree on what to do with the space.

There has been the suggestion that the redevelopment could become the new home for the Commanders franchise.

An agreement will have to be reached by April, and it is currently understood that the Commanders are undecided about whether to occupy the area.

The RFK Stadium was built by the Anacostia River and next to the DC Armory in 1961.

It was originally known as the District of Columbia Stadium and would be renamed a few years later to honor US senator and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy after his assassination.

Its construction followed decade-long efforts to build an arena on US soil with facilities to accommodate Olympic competitions.

The stadium was one of the first ones to employ the circular “cookie-cutter” design, allowing it to host both baseball and football games.

In the 1990s, the 56,000-seater became a major site for boxing as well as domestic and international soccer.

Interestingly, the arena was also where a couple of soccer legends debuted for their new clubs.

In 2003, Ronaldinho scored a goal and registered an assist during his first game for FC Barcelona in a friendly against AC Milan.

And in 2007, David Beckham and his LA Galaxy lost to DC United in his MLS debut.

Plans to demolish the rusting stadium were announced in 2019, and it has been sitting abandoned ever since.

John Egan joins Hull City from Burnley as Republic of Ireland defender targets Championship impact

JOHN EGAN is hoping to add his Championship know-how to Hull City after his move from Burnley.

Egan, 32, had been unable to establish himself at Turf Moor following the end of his six-year stay with Sheffield United last summer.

The Republic of Ireland star has targeted a push with Hull City in The Championship

And the centre-half – who began his professional career with Sunderland – has returned to the north-east on an 18-month deal with the option of a further year.

The Cork man knows the division inside-out and will look to help the Tigers steer clear of relegation trouble.

Egan – capped by Ireland 36 times – said: “I’m delighted. I’d known about the interest for a couple of weeks but wasn’t sure if it was going to happen.

“Last night, I got a call and I made my way over this morning.

“The club has made some really good signings in January. It’s a really good squad, a very good manager; it just needs to drive up the league now.

“The manager has steadied things and the team plays some good football, high intensity, on the front foot.

“They’re the type of teams you want to play in.

“I’ve played a lot of games in this division, managed to get promoted twice.

“Every game is really hard and the main thing is about being consistent.

“Having consistent standards in training leads to consistent performances on a matchday.

“I’m looking forward to the future, putting on the black and amber, being a Hull City player.

“I’ll give it my all, and hopefully, we can achieve success together.”

Horror moment dolphin leaps to its death at notorious resort where animals are kept in tiny tanks just yards from ocean

HORRIFYING footage shows the moment a dolphin leapt to its death during a show at a hotel with the sea just yards away.

The clip shows three dolphins leaping out of the pool at the Barcelo Riviera Maya hotel near Cancún in Mexico.

The tank where the dolphins were held has been called “Latin America’s smallest dolphin tank” by animal organisations who have called for a boycott of the Barcelo Riviera Maya.

The traumatic footage shows adults and children looking on from the pool side.

One of the dolphins continues to get perilously close to the concrete bridge separating two small pools.

On the third jump out of the water, the dolphin closest to the bridge leaps out and immediately descends head first into the concrete.

The helpless animal, reportedly named Plata, immediately went limp as an instructor swam over to check on its condition while horrified onlookers held their hands to their faces.

The dolphin was left slumped half in the water and half on the concrete as the other two soon poked their heads out of the water knowing that something was not right.

The concrete pool where the animals live is only two metres deep, which leaves the dolphins exposed to constant sunlight which can burn their skin.

Philip Demers, UrgentSeas co-founder and executive director, said: “Dolphins are wide ranging, emotionally complex, social animals that live their entire natural lives in large family pods.

“To see them separated from family and forced to perform for food in the most unsustainable, tiny tank is just heart-breaking.

“The dimensions of the tank offer no reprieve from the sun and the fact that it’s a mere few meters from the ocean makes this entire situation more gut wrenching.

“Imagine seeing and smelling the ocean, a.k.a. freedom, while simultaneously being treated like jailed criminal.

“Shame on Hotel Barcelo. The dolphins deserve better.”

UrgentSeas also says that two dolphins recently died at the hotel, only to be quickly replaced by others.

Animal rights organisations including Animal Heroes, Dolphin Freedom, Marea and Oceanos De Vida Libre have similarly slammed the resort after repeatedly calling for its closure.

The groups have reported the deaths of two dolphins in recent months.

In a joint statement they said: “For a year now, the organisations Animal Heroes, Dolphin Freedom, Marea, and Oceanos De Vida Libre have maintained a permanent campaign demanding the closure of this dolphinarium, which is one of the smallest in Mexico.

“We have delivered letters to both Barcelo in Playa del Carmen and in Mexico City, as well as letters from schoolchildren in Baja California pleading for an end to the exploitation of dolphins, yet they have never been willing to receive us.”

They added: “In addition, we have exposed other tragedies, such as the deaths of the dolphins Alex and Plata in just one year, which were never properly investigated.

“We have shown that the dolphin pool is smaller than those for humans, despite the fact that in the wild they swim vast distances and depths, that they have no shelter from the sun, and so on.”

The hotel has been open since 2019 and offers guests a chance to swim with the dolphins and watch them perform synchronised tricks.

Guests can swim with the dolphins at the resort and pay for “interaction programmes,” according to the company’s Tripadvisor page which also states it “does not meet animal welfare guidelines.”

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has opened an investigation.

The hotel has been contacted for comment.

I found free iPhone travel hack that improves ANY day out – it’ll save you money and even old phones can do it

HAVE you ever gone on a day trip or holiday somewhere that’s clearly very interesting – but you’ve just got no idea what you’re looking at?

It’s a nightmare. You’ve paid all this money and you’re wandering around, totally clueless about the sights.

Hand holding iPhone showing a live video call in progress.
Sean Keach
You can load up the Gemini app and talk to it like a real human[/caption]

A tour guide is the obvious answer, but that comes with downsides.

There aren’t always tour spots available, or convenient times to do one – and often there’s a fee. On top of that, if you book a tour for absolutely everything, you’ll be stuck to a strict schedule – and potentially a lot poorer.

So in a bid to intellectually upgrade my holidays, I’ve turned to a free and clever AI app.

It’s called Google Gemini, and it’s an AI-powered chatbot that also has a live voice mode for conversations. Can you see where I’m going with this?

GOOG TRAVELS!

I’ve used it for the past three trips I’ve been on as a stand-in tour guide, and it’s genuinely incredible.

I activate the voice mode, slap my iPhone in my pocket, and walk around asking questions about what I’m looking at.

If I’m on my own, I put headphones in. Or if I’m somewhere quiet with my wife, I’ll just have it on a sort of speaker-phone mode.

We can chat to it like we’re having a conversation – and it’s even possible to interrupt the AI mid-sentence.

The beauty of it is that it’s a totally personal tour based on your own desires, at your pace, and using the questions you ask.

You can dive into interesting bits as you go, and skip over anything that you think is boring.

The best bit is that it’s totally free – the Google Gemini app costs nothing to download, and it’ll work even if you don’t have the latest iPhone or Android.

All you need to do is prime the app for where you are. So you can say “I’m standing next to the Trevi Fountain in Rome”. Or even “I’m looking at a giant bull outside of a shopping centre in Birmingham”. Glorious.

Then you can ask away with whatever questions you have – and even tell the app that you want a proper tour, and to guide you to the next location.

If your tour gets interrupted, you can pick up where you left off.

Last week, I was lucky enough to visit Princeton University in the USA. I did a real tour, but went back with my AI helper afterwards to find out more about a mysterious half-buried cannon on the campus.

It was a British cannon that was abandoned after the Battle of Princeton. The cannon was taken to New Brunswick, but was eventually returned to Princeton by a group of students led by Leonard Jerome – that’s Winston Churchill’s grandad. Explosive stuff.

TOUR DE FORCE

I don’t think this is going to replace tour guides. It’s hard to beat a real human showing you around somewhere special.

But it’s unlikely you’ll have a tour guide for everywhere you go on holiday – so Gemini works as a really handy add-on.

You might also not feel comfortable in a group, or asking questions out loud.

So you can use Gemini to retrace bits of your actual tour and ask those questions you were desperate to know about.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR GOOGLE GEMINI LIVE

Here's Google's official list...

  • An Android phone or tablet.
  • The Gemini mobile app, or Gemini as your mobile assistant. For now, Gemini Live isn’t available in the Gemini web app, Gemini in Google messages, or the Gemini tab in the Google app on iPhone.
  • A personal Google account that you manage on your own. For now, Gemini Live isn’t available while signed in to a work or school Google account.
  • Your first language in settings is a supported language.
  • Be 18 or over.

There’s also a chance that you’ve gone somewhere so obscure that there aren’t any tour guides. That might just be the perfect spot to load up the app.

It’s also worth mentioning that voice isn’t your only option.

You can also take pictures of what you’re looking at, and paste it into your chat with Gemini.

Then you can ask a question about a specific thing that you’re looking at, because Gemini can process the images that you’re sharing.

You can also upload photos to Gemini and ask questions about them[/caption]

This is really handy if you’re looking at something like a piece of art. I can’t say I’m great at describing artwork out loud – but I can certainly chuck a photo into an app.

I’ve also found it useful for planning what to see before I actually get to a place.

We’ll chat to Gemini about what sort of things we’d like to see, and it’ll tell us what to look out for. It’s like a personal travel assistant.

Although keep in mind: it might just recommend booking an actual tour guide.

WHAT CAN YOU USE GOOGLE GEMINI FOR?

Here's the official tip list from Google...

  • Go Live with Gemini to brainstorm ideas, simplify complex topics, and rehearse for important moments.
  • Connect with your favourite Google apps like Search, Youtube, Google Maps, Gmail, and more

Tottenham facing desperate transfer scramble as Radu Dragusin set to miss rest of season with devastating ACL injury

TOTTENHAM have found themselves in a dramatic last-gasp transfer scramble on deadline day.

Spurs have been inundated with a raft of injuries throughout a turbulent campaign that has seen them tumble down to 14th place in the Premier League table.

Manager Ange Postecoglou’s injury hell has been so devastating that at some point he lost both of his starting centre-backs in Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

They were recently joined by the likes of Dominic Solanke, Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner, Wilson Odobert and Fraser Forster in the physio room.

According to The Athletic, Postecoglou’s woes have been extended as Radu Dragusin has torn his ACL.

Dragusin’s knee injury has proven to be so serious that he will miss the rest of the season – the Romania international found out the bad news on his 23rd birthday.

The defender sustained the damage when landing awkwardly after attempting a clearance in the second half of the 3-0 win over Elfsborg in the Europa League last Thursday.

The centre-back is now set to undergo surgery on the problem and is aiming to return early next season.

According to L’Equipe, Tottenham have now turned their attention on Burnley ace Maxime Esteve.

The same source claims the North Londoners have tabled a £20million offer for Esteve, 22.

However, the Clarets rate their defender at a minimum of £30m.

Esteve has stood out at Turf Moor this season in the Championship.

The centre-back has already amassed 30 appearances in the second division for Burnley.

The France youth international joined the Championship outfit on an initial loan from Montpellier before signing a permanent deal last year.

This comes as Tottenham are closing in on a big loan deal for Bayern Munich ace Mathys Tel.
