Thailand’s Dynamic News Landscape: Protests, Cannabis Controversies, and Global Echoes – June 27, 2025

In an unfolding tapestry of events that seem to weave both the intricate and the absurd, Thailand finds itself at the center of a whirlwind that touches everything from scandalous crime to ambitious policy reform. As the sun sets on June 27, 2025, echoes of protests, brawls, and unexpectedly large animals on runways paint a picture of vibrant chaos. Let’s embark on a journey through the heart of Southeast Asia’s stunningly unpredictable news trail. Cannabis advocates in Thailand are preparing to light up the public discourse—figuratively and quite possibly literally—on July 7 at the Ministry of Public Health. The motive? To vociferously oppose plans to roll back cannabis decriminalization, a liberating legal twist that dates back three years. With Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin’s stubborn push to recriminalize the herb, the cannabis community sees red, suspecting political intrigues reminiscent of power shifts within the Bhumjaithai Party. With medical prescriptions set…

Lionel Messi gets stand named after him at club he never played for as fans are left baffled

LIONEL MESSI saw a football club naming a stand after him… even though he never played for that team.

Messi, 38, is considered by many as the greatest player of all time after winning a record eight Ballon d’Or honours throughout his glittering 21-year career.

Fans were frustrated with that decision and many complained about the paint job

The star forward’s brilliant legacy was carved out at Barcelona where he spent 17 successful years that saw him winning 10 LaLiga titles, seven Copa del Rey honours and four Champions League trophies.

The Argentina captain didn’t enjoy the same level of success at Paris Saint-Germain where he played for two years after his heartbreaking exit from Barca in 2021.

And now the Inter Miami superstar is enjoying the winter of his career in the MLS where he has fallen off the radar despite a string of impressive performances for David Beckham’s club.

But it was Newell’s Old Boys that gave Messi the ultimate honour by naming one of their stadium’s stands after him.

The Argentine great has history with the club as he joined their academy at the age of eight and spent five years within their youth ranks before moving to Barcelona esteemed La Masia set up.

However, the legendary footballer never picked up a senior appearance with the Argentinean outfit.

Nevertheless, Messi has always been a fan of the club and has repeatedly expressed his support.

Old Boys issued photos of their new stand on social media and added the following caption: “Our home. The house of football history.”

Some fans were left baffled and expressed frustration with the club for honouring a player that never competed for the team at senior level – even if it is someone of Messi’s caliber.

And a section of the fanbase was also angry with the powers that be as they didn’t bother to repaint the bottom part of the stand.

One fan tweeted: “@Grok how many senior appearances has Lionel Messi made for Newells Old Boys?”

Another commented: “I thought it was us messing around, but no, they’re just that clueless.”

A third wrote: “Can you give me the info on the number of official goals scored by Messi?”

This fan said: “How sloppy, they didn’t even paint below!! No wonder Messi didn’t even thank them.”

And that one stated: “I feel second-hand embarrassment.”

Carla Ward pinpoints lessons Ireland need to learn following heavy defeat to the USA

CARLA Ward shared learning points as Ireland fell victim to the World’s number one USA in a friendly thumping in Denver.

Ward’s team subsided to a four-goal defeat in Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Ward spoke to her players out on the pitch after full-time

A young and mainly NWSL-based team shone in severe heat and altitude in the early hours of Friday morning.

An early Avery Patterson headed goal gave the hosts the lead before Sam Coffey doubled it just before half-time.

It wasn’t long after half-time when Rose Lavelle extended the lead further and then Alyssa Thompson put the game to bed with a half hour still to play.

Ireland were hit with an early blow as America-based Denise O’Sullivan and throw-in expert Megan Campbell were ruled out through injury.

The Girls in Green were also without captain Katie McCabe and Aoife Mannion in the game as they were given a break by the Ireland boss.

This US friendly tour was all about learning, gathering experience and preparing for the tough Nations League promotion play-off in October against Belgium.

There is plenty to build on from Ireland’s Nations League campaign despite a few disappointing performances including a loss to Slovenia with the same scoreline as today’s game.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport‘s Tony O’Donoghue, Ward said: “Let’s be honest, we’ve faced the best team in the world, and we knew that.

“We’ve come and played against a group of players that are all in season, fit. We know where we’re at, we’re out of season, but it’s not just that. They’re unbelievable quality, they really are.”

Ward spoke of some of these tough challenges her side would face during the US tour in advance of the fixture.

She added: “I was just saying to the girls, we’re going to learn more out of tonight than we will have in all our Nations League games. And that’s what this is about.

“Being really honest, Erin Healy was only (able to play) 15 minutes, Ellen Molloy can’t do more than ten, Izzy Atkinson was on 15, Ruesha Littlejohn was on 45.

“We were very restricted with what we could put out and the changes we could make.

“Look, we’ve done what we could have done with what we had available.”

“It’s tough, it’s really tough. The altitude, you can feel it in your chest, you can feel it everywhere. I take my hat off to the group.

“We asked them to leave everything out there, they’ve left everything out there.
