A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested by Leicestershire Police on suspicion of murder after a woman died.
The woman in her 50s was allegedly assaulted after a road traffic collision – and has since sadly died.
On June 24 just after 5:30pm, Leicestershire Police were called to a road traffic accident after a vehicle overturned.
The driver was seen leaving the vehicle before assaulting a woman near Leicester Royal Infirmary.
The crash and subsequent assault occurred on Aylestone Road, Leicestershire
She was left with life threatening injuries, and later died on June 26.
He was detained at the scene and arrested by police.
The original charges were: suspicion of attempted murder, possession with intent to supply class B drugs, assault of an emergency worker, dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drugs and failing to provide a specimen.
He has since been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.
Police have asked anyone with information, or with dash cam footage of the vehicle or subsequent assault, to come forward.
Detective Inspector Emma Matts, from East Midlands Special Operations Unit Murder Investigation team said: “This woman was sadly subjected to a serious assault and was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries. Her family and close friends have remained at her bedside and tragically she died this afternoon.
“Since the incident, a dedicated team of detectives have worked tirelessly pursuing all lines of enquiry to establish the full circumstances around what happened. Those enquiries will very much continue as we now move the incident to a murder investigation.
“I would like to thank those members of the public who have contacted with information about what they saw but I would also still like to appeal to anyone who saw anything connected to this incident or filmed any footage – whether that was of the vehicle being driven beforehand through the city centre, the collision itself or the assault – and hasn’t spoken to officers to please get in touch.”
“Again, if you were driving a vehicle which has a dash cam, please check your vehicle to see if it has captured anything of use to the investigation.
“What you know could still be a crucial piece of information so please do not hesitate to pass that on.”

IT was not unexpected but that did not make it any easier.
Ireland boss Carla Ward has never beaten USA boss Emma Hayes, and the Girls in Green have never got a result against the USA.
So a 4-0 loss in Denver in the first of two games against the Olympic champions is no shock, nor a disaster.
But that an Ireland team – without key players Katie McCabe, Denise O’Sulivan, Aoife Mannion and Megan Campbell – were thoroughly outclassed is a worry.
Rose Lavelle of the United States is tackled by Kyra Carusa of Ireland
Win that two legged tie against the Red Flames and Ireland go into League A for the World Cup qualifiers; something that makes qualifying that little bit easier.
But Belgium are, on paper, better than Ireland.
So taking on the top class Americans was arranged to prepare; effectively like altitude training in thinner air that you will face in future.
But against the USA, the Girls in Green learnt that it can be tough to breath when the best team in the world are running you ragged.
The statistics said it all. The USA had 26 shots to Ireland’s two, and it would have been greater than 4-0 were it not for stand-in captain Courtney Brosnan, winning her 50th cap.
Ireland were already hanging on before Avery Patterson opened the scoring with a header from a Rose Lavelle corner on 18 minutes.
A second goal arrived in first half stoppage time when Sam Coffey skipped by two defenders before firing home.
And the second half was all-USA and Lavelle got a goal her performance deserved on 53 minutes before Alyssa Thompson added a fourth with a lovely curling effort after beating two Ireland defenders.

IRELAND is set to join a new EU scheme to buy drones, guns and air defence systems.
Defence Minister Simon Harris will today sign up to Security Action for Europe, which enables members to bulk buy military equipment.
The ability to team up with other EU countries will make the procurement process quicker and cheaper for the Irish Defence Forces.
The SAFE deal only covers specific military equipment and weapons including air defence systems, artillery, ammunition, drones and anti-drone weapons.
The procurement deal will also give Ireland quicker access to cyber security technology and weapons for our navy including underwater equipment.
This is part of a move from the EU to cut red tape around the purchase of military equipment and boost the Bloc’s defences.
The SAFE deal was agreed by the EU last month with each individual member state given the option of signing up.
The instrument also creates a €150 billion pot which EU countries can borrow from in order to purchase military equipment.
Tanaiste Simon Harris believes that the SAFE instrument could help speed up the Government’s plan to beef up our military over the coming years.
A Commission on the Future of the Defence Forces has recommended that Ireland increase spending on the military to €1.5 bn a year by 2028 and add 2,000 staff and soldiers to our army, navy and air corps.
Minister Harris said: “Availing of the possibilities available under the SAFE Regulation will allow Ireland to realise this ambition more quickly and more efficiently.
“I am determined to provide for the development of a full spectrum of Defence Force Capabilities that will bring Ireland in line with other similar-sized European countries.
“I have agreed, therefore, that the Department of Defence should leverage the common procurement opportunities offered under the SAFE Regulation as much as possible to progress delivery of Ireland’s defence capabilities needs as quickly as possible.”
TRUMP PUTS ON PRESSURE
It comes as US President Donald Trump pressured European countries to ramp up their spending as he threatened to row back American support for Ukraine’s fight against the Russian invasion.
President Trump has previously accused the EU of freeloading on the military capabilities of the US.
Earlier this week, NATO countries – which does not include Ireland – agreed to increase their military spending to five per cent of their economic output by 2035.
Ireland is one of the lowest spenders on defence in Europe with current spending equating to around 0.25 per cent of GDP.
