Boxing is full of scumbags but I love them… you don’t come into it if you’re a good man, says Derek Chisora

DEREK CHISORA will soon leave this scumbag sport of boxing behind – even though he loves us.

At 41, he has announced his 49th professional bout against Otto Wallin on Saturday in Manchester will be his penultimate battle.

The 50th that follows – no doubt against a seriously dangerous rival – will be the swansong for the warrior who ducked nobody.

In a brutal 18-year career, Chisora has been robbed by foreign judges and beaten by drug cheats, on numerous occasions.

But he somehow refuses to be bitter, as he has built brilliant lives for daughters Angelina and Harare and looked after adored mum Violet.

When he calls us – the reporters, the fighters, the promoters and the managers – scumbags, it’s not said out of spite.

It’s out of a bizarre love for the hurt business that only usually attracts the destitute or damaged and can make influential millionaires out of hopeless young offenders.

“It’s a scumbag sport,” he told us with the trademark sort of grin he uses when he’s going to ruffle feathers. “But we love it.

“It’s crazy, it’s full of scumbags, but we love the scumbags in it.

“Whoever is in boxing is a scumbag and we love the scumbags. There’s no two ways about it.

“You don’t come into boxing because you’re a good man.

“If you’re a good man, you go work for a preacher or church or in a mosque. You’re a good man because you want to help.

“But if you are working in boxing, you’re a scumbag. It is what it is. It’s God’s honest truth.

“Let’s all be honest about it, boxing is the most f***ing wealthy sport, but it’s a poor man’s sport.

“If your son or your daughter wants to play tennis, or be a jockey, it will cost you money, you’ve got to train and buy a horse. Those are rich men’s sports.

“But if you want to become a boxer, it’s cheap, it’s a game of scumbags. Boxing is a scumbag sport.”

For almost a decade now, British fight fans have been worried about Del Boy and wishing he would hang up his gloves.

While his courage and durability are superpowers in the ring against fellow violent giants, they will be useless against the threat of boxing’s most dangerous opponent, dementia pugilistica.

Chisora addresses retirement calls

Heavyweight world titles are long beyond his grasp, but his cult-hero status is secured, his fortune is safe and his daughters’ futures are bright.

So when everybody – from the depths of the industry in the away corner at York Hall, to the casual row-Z seats at an Anthony Joshua show – wishes the veteran brawler would call time on his career, we do so out of genuine concern and gratitude.

Typically, he is fighting back at our empathy.

“Everybody always says, ‘Retire, retire, retire’,” he said. “But let’s be honest; nobody cares. It’s bulls***.

“When people tell me to retire, because they care, It’s bulls***.

“I care about me, my kids care about me. The only people who care for me are my mother and my kids.

‘I will retire when I want to retire’

“Nobody cares, they’re only saying because it makes them feel good.

“I will retire when I want to retire.  Nobody tells me: ‘You should retire. You should do this’. No, no, no, no, no, no.

“I know when it’s time for me to hang them up. And, when I hang them up, they will stay up.”

SunSport speaks on behalf of British boxing when we end the interview by promising Chisora that we honestly do care.

“You f***ing liar!” he says.

“Pay for my taxi home then.”

Steady, Del, we love you but that’s not fare.

Forgotten former Arsenal star Rob Holding bringing Crystal Palace nightmare to an end as he closes in on loan transfer

ROB HOLDING is set to end his Crystal Palace nightmare by joining Sheffield United on loan.

The former Arsenal star has not featured for Oliver Glasner’s side this season and has made just one appearance for the Eagles.

His exit was always on the cards this month as long as Palace could find an interested party.

And according to The Telegraph Sheffield United are closing on a move for the defender.

Holding is having a medical with the Blades ahead of a loan switch until the end of the season.

It is a chance for the 29-year-old to resurrect his career after being frozen out by Glasner.

Explaining the reason behind Holding’s expulsion, Glasner said in September: “Rob is training individually at the moment.

“We will talk together. He knows the reason. But it is something that stays between Rob and me. Nothing public.”

Glasner replied “no” when asked on Friday if Holding could return to the team.

Asked if he would be allowed to leave, Glasner said: “Yes, if there’s a club who wants to sign him and he wants to go there.

Over 30k premises still without power after Storm Eowyn chaos as Government issues update on water, schools and telecoms

SOME 32,000 homes, farms, schools, and businesses remain without power across the country as the Storm Eowyn clean-up continues.

The National Emergency Co-ordination Group confirmed electricity has been restored to 736,000 customers so far.

Officials warned that customers who were reconnected may experience some short disruptions to power to allow neighbours to be safely reconnected.

At the peak, over 300 schools across the country were without power.

But the vast majority of schools now have power restored and can reopen as normal tomorrow.

Department officials have extended the CAO deadline until February 6 for those who have been impacted by Storm Eowyn.

Skilled technicians from counterparts in Austria, Finland, France, Great Britain, Germany, Netherlands and Norway are on the ground in the worst impacted areas.

They are supporting over 2,500 ESB crews and partner contactors who have been bolstered by colleagues from the south and east of the country, as well as skilled retirees.

Several large-capacity generators are being provided by Poland and Denmark, following a request under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

The generators are being deployed to support ESB Networks, Uisce Éireann and telecommunications operators to bring power, water, phone and broadband services back to homes, schools and businesses.

A spokesperson for the ESB said: “ESB Networks reminds the public to Stay Safe, Stay Clear of fallen electricity wires.

“If you come across fallen wires or damaged electricity network, never, ever touch or approach these as they are LIVE and extremely dangerous.

“Please report any damage to electricity infrastructure by calling 1800 372 999.”

Some 400 premises remain without water today.

Uisce Eireann have now deployed and installed generators at “almost all of the plants, pumping stations and reservoirs” where it is feasible to do so.

They are continuing to work closely with the ESB to prioritise the restoration of electricity supply in the remaining locations.

In areas where water has not yet returned, Irish Water bosses said alternative water supplies are being provided for communities.

Uisce Eireann is tankering water to treated water reservoirs to resupply smaller schemes.

They will continue to liaise with Local Coordination Groups and Emergency Response Hubs in areas where these have been established.

Government officials said that “significant progress” has been made in restoring telecommunication services.

As of today, 0.83 per cent of fixed service users are without services and 2.76 per cent of mobile service users are experiencing some level of degradation of service.

The most impacted areas continue to be the north and west of the country.

Calls to emergency services utilise any available network, regardless of operator subscription.

And these are expected to continue to function as normal nationwide.

Emergency Response Hubs

  • Cavan – 18 hubs
  • Clare – 6 hubs
  • Donegal – 50 hubs
  • Galway City – 3 hubs
  • Galway County – 52 hubs
  • Kildare – 1 hub
  • Leitrim – 31 hubs
  • Limerick City and County – 1 hub
  • Longford – 6 hubs
  • Mayo – 35 hubs
  • Meath – 10 hubs
  • Monaghan – 23 hubs
  • Offaly – 10 hubs
  • Roscommon – 37 hubs
  • Sligo – 21 hubs
  • Westmeath – 20 hub
  • Cork County – 2 hubs

Many network and infrastructure operators have already brought in overseas crews to assist the ongoing repair work.

ComReg is “closely monitoring” the situation and liaising with operators.

They said further updates will be provided “over the coming days”.

Local Coordination Groups are now in place in 16 local authority areas.

A number of organisations including Uisce Éireann, ESB Networks, An Post, An Garda Síochána, HSE and Local Link are checking in on people and any concerns will be raised through the Local Coordination Group for follow up.

Any member of the public who has any concerns about friends, family or neighbours can contact their local coordination group helpline who will follow up.

Helpline numbers are available at www.gov.ie/stormresponse.

There are 326 Emergency Response Hubs currently operational, down from a high of 380 hubs.

The Humanitarian Assistance emergency financial payment is available to homeowners in the immediate aftermath of a severe weather event.

It’s open to homeowners in affected areas who do not have any power or water supply and includes support to pay for alternative accommodation if necessary.

The NECG will meet again tomorrow as the relevant subgroups continue to progress work in their respective areas.
