My hack to keeping cool this weekend without fancy aircon works so well, it makes a room a little too cold

THERE’S nothing more frustrating than trying to fall asleep in a hot and stuffy room.

However, a simple hack may be able to help, keeping you cool throughout the hot weekend around the corner.

Brits are set to enjoy glorious weather this weekend – but it’s a nightmare if you don’t have aircon[/caption]

The mum later chuckled that the hack worked so well, she was feeling a little too cold[/caption]

Since the majority of UK households don’t have air conditioning, millions of people resort to using fans or other gadgets in the warm weather.

However, fans only help to cool down your body temperature, and not the stuffy temperature of the room.

So if you’re looking to elevate this and feeling an instant cooling effect, a simple step can help.

One mum, only known as @lucascraftyco, recently shared a handy hack for creating a DIY air conditioner in your home – and chances are, you already have all the necessary items.

For your very own DIY aircon, you will need a fan, water, empty plastic bottles, as well as an optional egg box.

The rest is straightforward and foolproof – simply pour some water into the bottles and freeze them overnight.

The following morning, she demonstrated in the video, place them in front of your fan and voila, feel the magic happen.

The egg box is thought to keep the bottles high enough for the fan air to reach them for the extra cooling effect.

According to the TikTok video, the hack is so effective it even works a little too well, the mum chuckled.

”I’m actually now a bit cold,” she wrote in the caption.

This trick works creating a localised cooling effect, similar to a personal air cooler.

According to experts, ice absorbs heat from the surrounding air as it melts.

This is why placing ice in front of a fan can help to lower the air temperature.

How to keep cool in hot weather

Most of us welcome hot weather, but when it's too hot, there are health risks. Here are three ways to keep cool according to the NHS...

Keep out of the heat if you can.

If you have to go outside, stay in the shade especially between 11am and 3pm, wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothes, and avoid exercise or activity that makes you hotter.

Cool yourself down.

Have cold food and drinks, avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks, and have a cool shower or put cool water on your skin or clothes.

Keep your living space cool.

Close windows during the day and open them at night when the temperature outside has gone down. Electric fans can help if the temperature is below 35 degrees. Check the temperature of rooms, especially where people at higher risk live and sleep.

The fan then helps to circulate the cooled air, ensuring that the cooling effect isn’t limited to just the area directly around the ice.

And while this hack have the same effect as an actual AC unit, it can provide a noticeable and refreshing breeze in the immediate area.

It is also more cost-effective than running an air conditioning unit.

However, it is also worth noting that this method can increase the humidity in your room.

Stay cool this summer

And a doctor has revealed the exact time to shower to keep cool in the hot weather.

Plus, six methods for keeping cool in the hot summer conditions, including repurposing your hot water bottle.

Or there are savvy steps you can take to keep your space cool without breaking the budget.

Mum shoved her babysitter down concrete stairs after day boozing at Ladies Day – leaving her with horror injuries

A MUM left her babysitter with “horrific” injuries when she shoved her down concrete stairs after the races.

Chloe Bell launched her assault following a long day of booing on Ladies Day at Newcastle racecourse last July.

The 33-year-old became embroiled in a scrap with her ex-boyfriend’s mum, who was babysitting, when she returned home.

Newcastle Crown Court heard a “scuffle” ensued between the two women.

The victim, 59, was pushed and fell down four concrete outdoor steps.

She was taken to hospital with a head wound that needed six staples.

Doctors also treated her for a “horrific” open laceration on her arm, as well as hand injuries and bruises.

The victim said in an impact statement, which was read in court: “Me and Chloe were so close, she would call me mam and I would call her my daughter.

“I can’t believe she has done this to me.”

The victim said the incident has stopped her from sleeping, and her husband had to take off work to care for her.

She said it is still “all I think about”.

Bell, 33, of Blyton Avenue, Sunderland, admitted unlawful wounding.

Mr Recorder Jonathan Sandiford sentenced Bell to an 18 month community order with rehabilitation requirements, 40 hours unpaid work and £800 compensation order.

The recorder told her: “You had been out at the races in Newcastle, ladies day. As is common on such days people had a lot to drink. You had a lot to drink and it seems from what I have read that was an unusual situation for you.

“It seems to me a fair summary of what happened when you returned was effectively, as far as you were concerned, a drunk or intoxicated argument broke out.

“You had your hair pulled but you pushed the complainant down the outside steps. I have seen a photograph of them, they are quite high steps and she sustained very unpleasant injuries.

“She was taken to hospital and had various scans. I have seen photographs, particularly the injury to her upper left arm which can only be described as a horrific, large open laceration to the arm.

“She had significant lacerations to her head and hand, bruising to her legs and bruising to the back and chest.

“The emotional impact this had upon her is as much as the physical impact because of the nature of the relationship she had with you.

“To your credit, you yourself are horrified at what you have done to her.”

Recorder Sandiford also told the court Bell was of previous good character, and showed remorse.

“There was an element of you being subject to at least having your hair pulled,” he added.

Nicholas Lane, defending, dubbed the brawl a “spontaneous incident”.

He said: “She was incredibly close to the complainant. She cannot herself believe she behaved in the way she did.

“The court can safely conclude her actions were out of character.”

Keith Andrews backed to bring ‘his own evolution’ to Brentford as former Ireland star replaces Thomas Frank as manager

KEITH ANDREWS has been backed to make Brentford even better after succeeding Thomas Frank as head coach.

The former Republic of Ireland midfielder takes the reins from the German who has moved to Tottenham Hotspur.

It represents a promotion for Andrews, who was set piece coach since joining from Sheffield United in July 2024.

Since their promotion to the Premier League in 2021, the London side have finished 13th, 9th, 16th, and 10th.

And director of football Phil Giles backed the 44-year-old to build on that which Thomas Frank built.

He said: “Keith is a very good fit.

“He gets on with everyone, he’s very open and he’s a learner. Keith is clear in what he wants, he’s detailed, and the players and staff like and respect him.

“He understands the players in the building and the way we’ve played and trained under Thomas Frank.

“Keith will bring his own evolution but isn’t starting from scratch, so hopefully we can make some quick progress.

“He’s a very good coach and has clear ideas about how he wants the team to improve.

“We were looking for somebody not just to maintain what we’ve been doing but actually try and get better.”

Andrews will have quite the rebuilding job on his hands amid a summer of flux at the Gtech Community Stadium.

On the pitch, the Bees are set to lose Bryan Mbeumo amid ongoing talks with Manchester United, while Christian Norgaard is closing in on a move to Arsenal.

Off the pitch, meanwhile, assistant first-team coach Justin Cochrane, head of athletic performance Chris Haslam and first-team analyst Joe Newton followed Frank to Tottenham Hotspur.

On these vacancies, Giles added: “There’s been a lot of work going into what the team around Keith looks like.

“How do we take what we had last year and get better? That process is ongoing.

“We have to look at the blend of skills and experience. It’s an exciting project to have these roles open together.

“We’ll build it over time and learn about strengths and weaknesses. We’ll build it step by step and get the right balance.”

Andrews is a highly regarded coach, having previously served as assistant manager to Stephen Kenny with the Republic of Ireland.

He was also MK Dons’ assistant manager for the 2015/16 Championship campaign.

In his playing days, Andrews represented the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Hull City, MK Dons and Blackburn Rovers during a 16-year playing career which began in 1999.

Andrews earned 35 caps for the Republic of Ireland and featured at UEFA Euro 2012 under Giovanni Trapattoni.

‘VITRIOLIC CRITIC’

He was a frequent critic of Martin O’Neill, who succeeded the Italian and led the Boys in Green to Euro 2016.

And O’Neill is keen to see how his former player gets on in his first managerial gig.

Speaking to talkSPORT O’Neill said: “He has been their set-piece coach.

The irony is when I was manager of the Republic of Ireland he was a particularly vitriolic critic of mine at the time.

“He was really dead against me trying to use set-pieces to try to win games.

“The irony is he becomes the set-piece coach. Really I say good luck to him. Brentford have decided, if it is the case, that he should get it.

“I hope he does get it because then he will realise what management is all about.”

‘That’s the end of our friendship’ jokes Doireann Garrihy as she reveals Joe Duffy’s reaction to her baby bump

RTE star Doireann Garrihy has jokingly said she’s “ended her friendship” with Joe Duffy.

The 2FM host ran into the legendary broadcaster in the RTE studio in Donnybrook after his final Liveline show.

Joe, who confirmed his shock RTE exit after 37 years at the start of last month, looked the part in a smart three-piece suit for his last show in front of a live studio audience.

The 69-year-old finished up on air for the final time at 3pm this afternoon and his fellow RTE colleagues joined in on the celebration.

He visited the 2FM staff at the other side of the Donneybrook building and met Doireann, who’s presenting her show that runs on weekdays from 3pm until 6pm.

The Dublin beauty is currently pregnant with her and her husband Mark Mehigan’s first child.

Doireann shared a photo on Instagram of herself smiling from ear-to-ear with her arm wrapped around Joe, who looked startled as he pointed at the camera.

The mum-to-be revealed the hilarious reaction Joe had to her growing baby bump.

She said: “I asked him to bless the bump. He did, and said, ‘It’s triplets’. That’s the end of that friendship. Farewell to a legend, Joe Duffy.”

Doireann was also “honoured” to be handed a slice of the iconic host’s leaving party cake.

Joe and his beloved wife June Meehan welcomed triplets Ellen, Ronan and Seán into the world on 28 March 1995.

Joe only learnt that his wife was expecting triplets just weeks before she gave birth and he admitted that he knew nothing about parenting before the trio arrived.

The birth of their babies was announced on The Gay Byrne Show.

Emotions ran high as Joe bid a final farewell to beloved listeners, with celebrity guest appearances and a special tribute from Taoiseach Micheal Martin this afternoon.

The 69-year-old’s final show kicked off with a performance from The Camembert Quartet of the classic 70s hit Thank You For Being a Friend.

The band’s frontman Paddy Cullivan told Joe he gave him his “big break” and added: “But for the people of Ireland, you’ve been beacon, a light. You’ve listened to genius and to some awful aul… stuff.

END OF THE LINE

“It’s a new beginning job. This is not the end. So from the Camembert Quartet, from the people of Ireland, from everyone here: Thank you for being a friend.”

The emotional programme was filled with friends, fans and unforgettable past callers sharing their fond memories and praising Joe for being the “voice of the people”.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin came on air and gave a tear-jerking tribute saying: “I just want to take the opportunity to thank you sincerely.

“You were and are the voice of the people. You’re authentic and give the people a platform. I think you never left your roots, your working class background stood to you. The values your parents gave to you.

DUFFY’S DAY

“And on a personal level, going back to my student days, where you taught me a few things when I was a student activist.”

Joe interrupted the politician’s speech and joked: “You forgot them quick enough now.”

Martin told Joe he has touched his family and his “personal acts of kindness” have been “quite extraordinary”.

He spoke about how Joe took photos of Martin holding his daughter Léana during a crab-fishing day out in Cork and Joe sent them to him after Léana’s death, aged 7, in 2010.

Martin said: “That’s something Mary and I have always treasured.”

And Joe chose to keep his farewell statement simple as he subtly signed off telling listeners: “Goodbye from studio one and remember 51551 wash your hands.

“Love you all. It’s been a privilege. Slán go fóill.”
