I accidentally ruined my neighbour’s fence after I painted mine – but it’s not the mess that’s annoyed people the most

A DIY enthusiast has revealed that after giving his fence a lick of fresh paint, he soon realised he had accidentally ruined his neighbour’s fence in the process.

Unsure of what to do, the homeowner took to social media to show off the “nightmare” and ask for people’s advice on how to remove the stains.

But social media users are more frustrated by something else rather than the mess…[/caption]

But while many were stunned by the mess, this wasn’t what annoyed people the most.

In fact, users were more bothered by the colour he had chosen to paint his fence – yes, you heard that correctly.

Posting on Reddit, on the r/DIYUK thread, the anonymous man shared his post under the username @nokpaan and wrote: “HELP!!! Made a mess of [my] neighbour’s fence.”

Alongside pictures of his neighbour’s side of the fence, he then confessed: “I recently painted/stained my fence with the paint dripping over to my neighbours side of the fence.

“Has anyone come across this nightmare or has any idea on how to remove this stain?”

In an attempt to clean up his error, he shared: “I’ve tried using a sander and paint stripper was of little help.”

Desperate to fix the issue, he begged: “Any product or idea will be highly welcomed and appreciated.”

Reddit users were left stunned by the man’s paint error and many eagerly flocked to the comments to share their advice.

One person said: “Offer to paint their side the same colour.”

Another added: “Oops. That won’t be coming out any time soon! I’m sorry but you must surely have noticed what was happening whilst you were undertaking this work?

“There’s literally nothing that will get that out, so it’s either stain their side too, cover it somehow, or replace the fence.”

Whilst a third commented: “Only option is to bite the bullet and paint their fence as well.”

The Top Five Reasons Neighbours Squabble

One study by Compare the Market revealed the top reason British neighbour's argue

  1. Broken fences – top of the board was broken fences and whose responsibility it was to fix it
  2. Parking: one of the leading drivers of neighbour disputes, with 54.1 per cent of people having issues with people parking in front of their house, parking bay or driveway
  3. Trees – complaints about a neighbour’s tree cracking your garden path was also common with nearly half of participants finding it frustrating
  4. Bin wars – outdoor bin etiquette continues to ignite the most furious debates between neighbours
  5. Nosy Neighbours – some people have their eyes and ears at the ready to have a peek causing problems for others

But it turns out it wasn’t the mess that frustrated people the most – in fact, many were more offended that the man had chosen to paint his fence grey

Not only did someone describe it as a “hellish grey fence”, but alongside a puking emoji, one user sighed: “And of all the colours…grey.”

If this was my fence I would have you replace it. I would not want a grey fence that needs maintenance every two/three years

Reddit user

A second questioned: “Did you think you’d somehow be able to only paint one side without it bleeding through to the other side. Grey? Really? On a garden fence?”

At the same time, another wondered: “When will this terrible fashion for grey wood die out? My neighbour did the same.”

Meanwhile, one person confessed: “If this was my fence I would have you replace it. I would not want a grey fence that needs maintenance every two/three years.”

Rules on fences and trees

Fences:

  • Height Restrictions: In most areas, fences in front gardens should not exceed one metre in height without planning permission. For rear gardens, the limit is generally two metres.
  • Shared Fences: If a fence is shared with a neighbour, both parties are typically responsible for its maintenance and any costs associated with repairs or replacement.
  • Building Regulations: Ensure that any new fence complies with local building regulations and does not obstruct visibility for drivers or pedestrians.

Trees:

  • Ownership: Trees located on your property are your responsibility, including any damage they may cause. Conversely, trees on a neighbour’s property are their responsibility.
  • Overhanging Branches: You are entitled to trim branches that overhang into your property, but only up to the boundary line. The cut branches should be offered back to the tree owner.
  • Protected Trees: Some trees are protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). Check with your local council before undertaking any work on a tree, as unauthorised work can result in fines.
  • Roots: If tree roots from a neighbour’s tree cause damage to your property, you have the right to remove the roots. However, it is advisable to discuss this with your neighbour first to avoid disputes.

Always consult your local council or a legal adviser for specific regulations and advice.

In response to the comments, the Reddit author later wrote: “I made a mistake hence I wanna fix it to have a good relationship with my neighbour

“[The] neighbour doesn’t want to paint his fence so I might have to cover the mess.

“Thanks for the help and I don’t think I’m touching a brush anytime soon.”

UK weather: Temperatures to hit 28C today before weekend of glorious sunshine with Brits basking in 34C highs on Monday

BRITS will bask in 28C heat today — with more sunshine on the way and temperatures set to soar to a whopping 34C by Monday.

A second amber heat health alert in two weeks will come into force on Friday, with temperatures set to top 30C again this weekend.

The alert covers London, the East Midlands, South East, South West and East of England, and runs from midday Friday until 6pm on Tuesday.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has also issued a yellow alert for Yorkshire and the Humber and the West Midlands for the same period, warning of major strain on health and social care services.

It comes as temperatures could hit 28C in central and southern England on Friday, rising to 30C on Saturday, 31C on Sunday, and peaking between 32C and 34C on Monday, according to the Met Office.

An amber alert was previously issued across all regions of England on June 19 — the first time it had been used since September 2023.

That same day, temperatures hit 32.2C in Kew, west London, before heatwaves were declared across England and Wales.

An official heatwave is declared when an area hits specific temperature thresholds for three days in a row — ranging from 25C to 28C depending on the region.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at the UKHSA, said: “We have already seen a spell of hot weather last week and temperatures are once again set to increase in the coming days, with central, southern and eastern areas of the country likely to see the biggest impacts.

“Our findings show that heat, especially at the sort of temperatures we are likely to see at the beginning of next week, can result in serious health outcomes across the population, especially for older adults or those with pre-existing health conditions.

“It is, therefore, important to check on friends, family and neighbours who are more vulnerable and to take sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.”

Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell added: “From Friday onwards, we’re starting to once again see the heat build across England and Wales.

“We’re likely to see temperatures potentially peak around 27C or 28C in central and southern parts of England, it’s going to feel quite humid.

“On Saturday, the hottest weather will be in the south east, potentially 30C.

“On Sunday, we’re most likely to see somewhere around 30C or 31C.

“It looks like the peak of the hot spell will be Monday, at the moment it’s looking between 32C and 34C, there’s a chance it’ll be hotter than the previous (heatwave).

“Tuesday, some fresher air is going to spread across the country, but we’re potentially likely to see between 31C and 33C.”

Some parts of central and southern England could meet the heatwave threshold by Monday, Mr Snell added.

The meteorologist said that from Monday, some thunderstorms might develop, but it’s too early to know where.

Temperatures are expected to drop to the mid-20s after Tuesday, which is still above average for this time of year, the forecaster said.

It follows the relief of partygoers at Glastonbury Festival who were spotted trudging through mud in ponchos and wellies this morning.

Attendees refused to let the poor weather dampen their spirits as thousands descended onto Worthy Farm.

The weather should improve as the rest of the festival is set to be mostly dry and mild, with temperatures in the low 20s.

Sun-seekers will be out in full force on Saturday and Sunday, with the mercury set to reach the low 30s and high 20s.

Monday is predicted to be the hottest of the four-day stretch, with sunshine revellers set to flock to beaches and parks to make the most of the glorious weather.

People have been spotted flocking to the seaside and rivers so they could take a quick dip to cool off.

Others went to sunbathe in parks instead, making the most of their lunch breaks.

Earlier this week, one school’s uniform policy sparked fury among parents when dozens of students were not allowed to attend class despite hot temperatures.

More than half the pupils were reportedly missing from Bristol Free School in Southmead during the 30 degrees Celsius heat last week because they were wearing PE kit.

Those wearing the school’s sport polo shirts and shorts were turned away by leaders at the gates as they arrived in the morning.

An email sent from the school to parents the following day clarified students were only allowed to remove the regulation school tie from their uniform for the hot weather.

Kanchanaburi Shock: Entrepreneur Sittikorn’s Murder Sparks Urgent Hunt for Gunmen

In the serene and verdant heart of Kanchanaburi, a picturesque province known for its lush landscapes and tranquil rivers, the unsettling echoes of gunfire have stirred a community into shock. The peaceful facade of the Pak Phraek sub-district was violently interrupted on a seemingly ordinary Wednesday afternoon, June 25, with a chilling incident that could rival any high-tension thriller. Sittikorn, affectionately known as Sia Piak, a well-respected and entrepreneurial spirit in the region at 51, met a tragic demise at the hands of still-at-large assailants. The dreadful scene unfolded in the parking lot of a local construction materials store, where Sittikorn and his wife, Amphai, had visited with plans far from sinister—merely to procure chairs and decorations for their flourishing family restaurant. However, fate had a cruel plot twist in store. As the couple approached their trusty black pickup, an afternoon routine turned into a nightmare that Amphai narrowly survived.…

Hun Sen vs. Thaksin Shinawatra: Unveiling a Furious Southeast Asian Feud

An unexpected rift has emerged between former allies, as Cambodia’s Senate President Hun Sen finds himself embroiled in a fierce dispute with former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The normally stoic Hun Sen has unleashed a whirlwind of accusations, pointing a finger at Thaksin, his erstwhile “godbrother,” for betraying the ties they once held dear. This political drama has tongues wagging across Southeast Asia, as the Cambodian leader has boldly threatened to unveil details of the purported “treasonous” acts committed by Thaksin’s family, particularly those acts which allegedly disrespected Thailand’s revered monarchy. However, Hun Sen is playing the long game; he’s keenly assessing Bangkok’s reaction before spilling more tea on this simmering saga. Speaking before a gathering in Preah Vihear province, Hun Sen’s words were laced with disappointment and determination. “I’d rather let others betray me first; I don’t betray others first. Now that I’ve been betrayed, I feel I…

Reviving Pattaya’s Eastern Region National Sports Complex: 774 Million Baht Venture Awaits Grand Finale by December 2025

The grand vision of making Pattaya a national sports hub has been sitting on the sidelines since 2008, gathering not fans but layers of neglect. This grand enterprise, a whopping 774 million baht ambition, unfurls across 59 hectares in the heart of Chon Buri like an unfinished epic tale. Destined to become a stage for international events, it now paints a rather forlorn picture, more of a ghost town than a bustling arena. Just yesterday, the complex was back in the spotlight with an inspection by Thailand’s National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), spearheaded by the ever-vigilant Saroj Phueng-ramphan. The scene that greeted the commission was not one of victory but of vacant promise—a 20,000-seat capacity monument to dreams deferred. What was meant to captivate the world now pleads for redemption under the weight of damaged equipment and neglected facilities. In a bid to piece together this ambitious jigsaw, Boonthian Jansuk, Director…

Thailand Faces Crucial Trade Deadline: Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira in Key US Tariff Negotiations

In the high-stakes world of international trade, all eyes are currently on Thailand as it teeters on the cusp of a crucial deadline with the United States. With the clock relentlessly ticking down, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira has announced his imminent voyage across the Pacific for urgent trade negotiations next week. The only thing higher than the anticipation is the potentially crippling 36% tariff looming large over Thai exports, should no deal be reached by the expiry of the moratorium on tariffs in July. A significant economic cog, exports are a powerhouse propeller of growth for Thailand. Minister Pichai’s laconic briefing to the press confirmed the schedule but left the agenda bereft of detail, much like a suspense novel withholding its thrilling crescendo. Currently, thanks to the moratorium, most countries are enjoying a relatively sweet much-lower tariff of 10%, a breeze compared to the storm Thailand is bracing for if…
