Spy chiefs probed ‘Russian double agent’ at the heart of MI6 in huge 20-year global operation – and never caught ‘mole’
SPY chiefs probed a suspected “Russian double agent” at the heart of MI6 in a 20-year global operation.
An investigation launched into the alleged mole, dubbed Operation Wedlock, sent surveillance officers around the world.

It included a team of over 30 MI5 officers, as reported by the Guardian, whose work spanned up to two decades.
One on occasion, they were sent to the Middle East and sheltered in a CIA safe house.
It is understood they were sent on the mission under terms that would have been illegal according to international law.
Despite their work, MI5 were unable to conclude whether there had been a mole spying for Russia.
A source told the Guardian: “We thought we had another Philby on our hands”.
Kim Philby was a prominent member of the notorious Cambridge Five, a ring of spies who passed information to the Soviet Union.
With fascism plaguing Europe, Philby headed for Austria where he became active in helping the oppressed working class socialists.
Alongside his wife, Jewish socialist Litzi Friedmann, the couple helped the anti-fascist cause in Vienna but later fled to London to escape the Nazis.
Philby’s life changed when he was introduced to a resident Soviet agent, code-named “Otto”, at Regents Park.
Along with four other Cambridge students, they were persuaded to start double lives as spies for the Soviets.
Through the help of the KGB they worked their way into government jobs and passed on state secrets to the Russians.
Philby was so good at his job he even secured a high-level job with MI6.
In 1949 he was sent to Washington where be became a liaison intelligence officer ‘combating Soviet subversion in Western Europe’.
However, after two members of the Cambridge Five defected, suspicion grew over Philby and he resigned from the Foreign Office.
Cleared of treason allegations, MI6 posted him to Beirut, where he worked as a correspondent for The Observer.
In 1962, his cover was blown during a conversation with a MI5 officer at a party and he later made a ‘sham’ confession to be granted immunity.
A year later a KGB guide smuggled him into Russia where he lived out the remainder of his life and was treated as a ‘hero’.
MI6 is the intelligence agency which supplies the Government with foreign intelligence (as opposed to MI5 which deals with domestic security threats).
Its existence was not formally acknowledged until 1994. It is regarded as one of the best spy agencies in the world.
Describing its work on its official website, the agency says: “Our mission is to provide Her Majesty’s Government with a global covert capability.
“We collect secret intelligence and mount operations overseas to prevent and detect serious crime, and promote and defend the national security and economic wellbeing of the United Kingdom.”
Meanwhile, MI5 is widely understood to focus its intelligence efforts inside the UK but that isn’t always the case.
With threats to Britain’s security often coming from abroad, the agency says it does “work outside the UK where it’s necessary to protect the UK’s national security or to counter security threats”.
It describes itself as a “publicly accountable civilian intelligence organisation”, not a “secret police force”, as it does not have the power to arrest people.
Reporting to the Home Office, it was formed in 1909 under British army captain Vernon Kell to identify and counteract German spies in the country, according to the Britannica.
The MI5 probe into an alleged mole was sparked in the 1990s and continued to at least 2015.
It was launched after a tip off from the CIA in America, where they believed a British intelligence officer was working for Russia.
Vladimir Putin was in charge of the FSB, Russia’s secret intelligence service, at one point in the investigation.
A source said: “[We were told] the target was a Russian spy. The US believed he was leaking information to the Russians.
“He was suspect 1A. The job was taken more seriously than any other [MI5] was involved in. Wedlock eclipsed them all.”
As reported by the Guardian, it has been revealed the UK believed they had identified the alleged spy.
MI5 specialists were put in charge of tracking him down, although they did not operate from the Westminster HQ.
The mission was so top secret, one insider claimed the officer in charge was briefed about the task in a church.
Instead, the team were based in Wandsworth, south London, which was near an MI6 base.
The officers were told the suspected mole held a senior role at MI6 and listening devices were planted inside his home, as well as secret cameras.
He was tracked across the world, with officers travelling as far as Asia and the Middle East.
The agents were given authentic passports, but fake names, and told they would be “on their own” if caught.
A source also claimed the suspect was not thought to have been working by himself, but aided by two other people.
The insider added how Wedlock was a “highly unusual operation, the longest in recent memory and probably the most expensive”.
“MI5 never got the conclusive proof it was looking for,” they added, and MI6 “still [potentially] has a mole to find”.

World Health Organisation admits they STILL have no idea what caused Covid pandemic – but refuses to rule out lab leak
A LEADING theory that the Covid pandemic originated from a lab leak in China cannot be ruled out, the World Health Organisation said.
A team of experts set up by the WHO in 2021 to investigate Covid’s origins said “all hypotheses remain on the table” – while also accusing Beijing of not giving up critical information.

The Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (Sago) said on Friday that most data suggests the idea that the virus jumped from animals to humans.
This is the same conclusion the WHO came to in 2021.
Watch the documentary in full on our YouTube channel here
Their new report made the bombshell claim that a lab leak theory should “not be ruled out”.
But they added: “Nor can it be proven until more information is provided.”
Group chair Marietjie Venter said after three years of investigating, they were unable to come to a certain conclusion of the pandemic’s origins.
They blasted China for not releasing all necessary data to determine Covid’s creation – despite hundreds of requests for genetic sequences and biosecurity information to the government.
She Venter: “Therefore, this hypothesis could not be investigated or excluded.
“It was deemed to be very speculative, based on political opinions and not backed up by science.”
Venter said the 27-member group could not reach a unanimous conclusion on Covid’s origins, following one member’s resignation earlier this week.
Three other scientists also asked for their names to be removed from the new report.
Covid-19 emerged just eight miles from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Scientists there had been importing and manipulating bat coronaviruses and had been filmed handling animals with inadequate protection.
Venter added that there was no evidence proving Covid was created in a lab, nor was there any indication it was spreading before December 2019 anywhere outside of China.
She said: “Until more scientific data becomes available, the origins of how SARS-CoV-2 entered human populations will remain inconclusive.”
Beijing has consistently refused to release full details about the lab in Wuhan, despite repeated requests for information from multiple countries.

It comes after The Sun’s explosive Covid lab leak documentary laid bare the mounting evidence and disturbing questions surrounding the virus’s emergence in Wuhan – home to China’s most secretive bio-research facility.
In April, the US unveiled a bombshell new web page on the origins of Covid, blaming the Wuhan Institute of Virology for unleashing the killer virus.
And in a fresh propaganda push, Beijing insisted “substantial evidence” showed Covid “might have emerged in the United States earlier than its officially-claimed timeline, and earlier than the outbreak in China”.
The document – titled Covid-19 Prevention, Control and Origins Tracing: China’s Actions and Stance – was released via China’s official Xinhua news agency.
It unashamedly accused the US of “indifference and delayed actions” during the global Covid fight – and of scapegoating China to deflect from its own “mismanaged” response.
It wrote: “The US has made China the primary scapegoat for its own mismanaged COVID-19 response.”

The report added that America was “spreading misinformation” and wasted “precious time China had secured for the global fight against the pandemic”.
It revived Beijing’s long-standing claims that it shared information with the world in a “timely manner”.
The paper added: “The US should not continue to ‘pretend to be deaf and dumb’, but should respond to the legitimate concerns of the international community.”
In May Donald Trump banned all US funding for risky virus research in China and beyond, five years after Covid-19 upended the planet.
The US President said in the Oval Office last month: “I said that right from day one it leaked out — whether it was to the girlfriend or somebody else, [a] scientist walked outside to have lunch with the girlfriend or was together with a lot of people — but that’s how it leaked out in my opinion.”

‘Nightmare neighbour’ arrested for posting smoke bombs and throwing eggs is found with sick pictures of children

A MAN dubbed a “nightmare neighbour” by police for posting smoke bombs and throwing eggs was found with sick pictures of children after being arrested.
Andrew Wilson, 53, from Lichfield, Staffordshire, was jailed for multiple offences on June 19 at Stafford Crown Court.

Wilson was jailed after cutting off his neighbour’s internet access and throwing smoke bombs and eggs.
Staffordshire Police said Wilson had taken a dislike to his neighbour merely because they had a dog who they would play with in the garden.
When officers arrested him he was then found with indecent images of children on his device.
Police said he put smoke bombs through his neighbour’s letterbox, threatened them with a baseball bat and cut off their internet access as part of the dispute.
Wilson was jailed for two years and four months after admitting multiple offences.
This included two counts of stalking involving alarm and distress which involved him throwing stones, smoke bombs and eggs at a neighbour.
This is in addition to threatening them with the baseball bat and interfering with their wi-fi and CCTV cameras.
Wilson also admitted to three counts of making an indecent photograph of a child relating to category A, B and C images.
As part of his sentence, Wilson was handed a sexual harm prevention order and a notification order for ten years.
He was made the subject of a restraining order indefinitely.
Wilson was ordered to forfeit the internet tampering device and mobile phone to police as well as pay a victim surcharge of £228.
An officer who lead the case from Lichfield local policing team, said: “Wilson’s conviction and sentence sends a clear message that those who engage in such disturbing and harmful behaviour will be prosecuted and brought to justice.
“The safety and wellbeing of our community is our absolute priority, and we remain committed to protecting residents from those who pose a threat – whether through stalking or any other form of abuse.
“We continue to work closely with partner agencies to support victims and ensure Lichfield remains a safe place for everyone.”
Funeral home owner who stashed 190 decomposing bodies in abandoned building and sent families fake ashes jailed
A TWISTED funeral home owner who stashed 190 decomposing bodies in a bug-infested building and handed grieving families fake ashes has been jailed for 20 years.
Jon Hallford, co-owner of the Return to Nature Funeral Home in southern Colorado, was sentenced in federal court on Friday.

The 44-year-old pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud over a gruesome scheme that shocked the nation.
He admitted fleecing clients and siphoning nearly $900,000 in Covid-19 relief funds meant for struggling businesses — splurging the cash on luxury shopping sprees, laser body sculpting, flashy cars and cryptocurrency.
His sentence is five years more than prosecutors requested, and double what his own lawyer pushed for.
“I am so deeply sorry for my actions,” Hallford told the judge.
“I still hate myself for what I’ve done.”
He added that he opened the funeral home hoping to “make a positive impact in people’s lives,” but admitted: “Then everything got completely out of control, especially me.”
Bodies piled up ‘like lumber‘
Hallford and his wife, Carie Hallford, who co-owned the funeral home, ran their grisly scam between 2019 and 2023.
Investigators were first alerted in October last year when neighbours in Penrose, a tiny town two hours south of Denver, complained of a foul stench.
Cops who turned up made a stomach-churning discovery — at least 190 bodies stacked atop each other in various states of decay, so badly decomposed that FBI agents had to lay boards over the sludge to navigate the rooms.
Some corpses had been left there for years, including the body of Colton Sperry’s grandmother who died in 2019.
In court on Friday, the young boy tearfully told the judge he fell into a deep depression when he found out.
He told his parents at the time: “If I die too, I could meet my grandma in heaven and talk to her again.”
His father later rushed him to hospital for a mental health check, which led to therapy and an emotional support dog.
Another victim, Derrick Johnson, travelled nearly 3,000 miles to tell the court how his mother was “thrown into a festering sea of death”.
“I lie awake wondering: was she naked? Was she stacked on top of others like lumber?” he said.
“While the bodies rotted in secret, [the Hallfords] lived, they laughed and they dined.
“My mom’s cremation money likely helped pay for a cocktail, a day at the spa, a first-class flight.”
Two families even buried the wrong bodies after being sent urns of worthless dust — devastating relatives who said it destroyed their ability to properly grieve.

Lavish spending spree
Federal prosecutors revealed the Hallfords drained the pandemic aid and clients’ money to bankroll a lavish lifestyle.
They splashed out on a GMC Yukon and an Infiniti worth over $120,000 combined, snapped up Gucci and Tiffany jewellery, spent $31,000 on cryptocurrency, and paid for laser body sculpting treatments.
The sentencing also included an order for Jon Hallford to pay more than $1 million in restitution — with $193,000 to be divided among the victims’ families and the rest to the Small Business Administration.
Hallford will serve his 20-year term concurrently with a state sentence expected in August, after he pleaded guilty to 191 counts of corpse abuse and hundreds of other state charges including forgery and money laundering.
Meanwhile, his wife Carie withdrew her guilty plea in the federal case earlier this year and will now go to trial in September.
She also faces 191 counts of corpse abuse in the state case.
The pair were arrested in Oklahoma last November after going on the run.
By then, the decaying funeral home had already been torn down.
‘The journey is not complete’ – President Michael D Higgins wishers revellers happy Pride 2025 & marks key milestone
MICHAEL D Higgins has wished revellers a happy Pride 2025 — his last LGBT+ event as president.
The Dublin Pride Parade and March 2025 will assemble on O’Connell Street today — celebrating a decade since the marriage referendum.

President Higgins, 84, whose Aras An Uachtarain term ends in November, said: “In this, my final year as President of Ireland, may I offer my warmest greetings to all those marking Pride 2025.
“This annual celebration is a vital affirmation of the rights, the dignity and the joy of our LGBT+ communities.
” It is a time, too, to remember with gratitude the courage of those who paved the way for progress when marching was not safe, who gave voice to truths that were long silenced, and who set the foundations for the inclusive Ireland that we continue to strive towards today.
“In recent years, great strides have been made in advancing the rights and recognition of LGBT+ people in Ireland.
“In celebrating Pride this year, we are also marking the 10th anniversary of the Marriage Equality referendum.
“A moment that spoke of the kind of Ireland we aspire to be — inclusive, generous and unafraid to affirm the equal worth of all of our citizens.”
The President said that we must also acknowledge that “the journey is not complete”.
He continued: “A truly inclusive society is one where all can live authentically and creatively, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression, where all can participate fully, and where all voices are not only heard but valued, in all their richness and diversity.
“Pride remains a vital expression of that vision in challenging us to deepen our commitment to human rights, to solidarity, and to the kind of republic that cherishes all of its people equally.
“In a time when hard-won rights are being questioned in many parts of the world, such vigilance and unity are more vital than ever.
Mr Higgins reflected on his terms as President of Ireland.
He added: “I have been continually inspired by the creativity, resilience and generosity of spirit shown by Ireland’s LGBT+ community.
“In so many aspects of Irish life, your rich and varied contributions have helped to enrich our society immeasurably — widening the circle of belonging for us all.
“May I wish all those marking Pride 2025 the very best as you celebrate and embrace this remarkable festival of equality, respect, and love.
“May this Pride be a time of joy, of solidarity, and of renewed hope as we work to craft a future together that is peaceful, just and inclusive – a future defined by equality and participation of all citizens across the world in all their wonderful diversity.”

Horse racing tips: ‘His rapid improvement shows no sign of stopping’ – Templegate’s 7-2 Saturday NAP
TEMPLEGATE takes on a busy Saturday of racing confident of bashing the bookies.
Back a horse by clicking their odds below.
PABORUS (2.25 York, nap)
Has won four of his past five starts and can keep his excellent run of form going here. He signed off last season clocking a fast time while winning in good company on the Southwell sand. That was over this trip and he struck on comeback at Thirsk last time out in April. He went through the gears with the minimum of fuss there and could have won by a lot more than the official margin of two lengths. He takes a fair hike in class here but looks well up to it for trainer Ed Bethell who really put himself on the map with a couple of big wins at Royal Ascot last week. With William Buick in the saddle he will take a lot of beating even at Group 3 level.
KIND OF BLUE (2.10 Newcastle, nb)
We’ll stick with Wathnan Racing and their speedster in the Chipchase Stakes. He’s a proven Group 1 sprinter who needed the run after a long break in France last time. James Fanshawe’s flyer looks a cut above these rivals.
PAPPANO (3.15 Newcastle, treble)
Has success on a Northumberland Plate! Jumps legend Willie Mullins is starting to make his mark on the level too and this former Gosden runner will relish this challenge in the big one at Newcastle. He stays and looks on a fair weight.
Templegate’s verdicts
NEWCASTLE
1.40
ARAMRAM ran well in the Wokingham last week, finishing like a train after missing the kick.
He’s best over this trip and could have more to offer. He’s gone well on the all-weather before.
Pocklington goes well here and is best after a break so don’t worry about his 311 days off. He looks solid each-way.
Durham Castle is progressive and had a bit up his sleeve when going in at Windsor last time. This trip suits and he’s another with tapeta form.
Arctic Thunder came home strongly into second at Haydock on just his second run for Ed Walker and is another to note.
2.10
KIND OF BLUE is a proven Group 1 performer who should be much too good.
He finished last season winning the Champions Sprint at Ascot and can be forgiven his comeback in France last time when missing the break by half a furlong.
He doesn’t usually do that and will be much smarter away today.
Ferrous is a classy handicapper who deserves a crack at this level. He won well here last time and is best over today’s trip.
Fair Angellica took Listed honours at Salisbury when enjoying the drop to this distance and can hold her own again.
Spycatcher is proven in this grade and is capable of hitting the frame wisely dropping back from seven furlongs.
2.40
CONTACTO went close at Goodwood last time on his first crack at this two-mile trip.
He should come on for that first outing in nine months and he looks capable of better over extreme trips.
Godsend was well backed for the Plate but didn’t quite get in.
He’s a typical Sir Mark Prescott improver who made it four in a row at Nottingham last time.
This is his toughest assignment yet from another 7lb higher but he’ll be right there.
Humble Spark has four Newcastle wins on his CV and stays well. He was far from disgraced in this grade at Haydock last time and looks a player.
Savrola is consistent over slightly shorter trips and went close at Hamilton last time. He’s got place claims.
Gibside won over 2m2f at Chester last month and is another serious contender.
3.15
PAPPANO was useful on the level for the Gosdens and can take a step forward on this Flat debut for Irish genius Willie Mullins.
He has gone well in Listed company and looks on a fair weight under Jamie Spencer who can time his run right.
East India Dock hit traffic issues when running a cracker in the Ascot Stakes and the Chester Cup winner looks a real threat.
Zanndabad is a proven stayer from the Tony Martin yard that has won this race before.
He had a nice warm-up for this at The Curragh last time.
Last year’s winner Onesmoothoperator has a lot more weight this time but his liking for trip and track can take him into the frame.
Who’s Glen was a solid fifth to East India Dock at Chester and has place prospects.
3.45
NATIVE WARRIOR has some smart form over a mile and should enjoy Newcastle’s straight over 7f which takes some getting.
He’s dropped close to the mark that saw him go close in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot last year and he was a solid second at Windsor 33 days ago.
He can have a say in this wide-open contest.
City Walk is interesting despite coming back from 540 days off.
He won the Gosforth Park Cup sprint here but has stamina too and Saeed Bin Suroor should have him ready.
Zip looks a big price considering he was a solid second over course and distance last time. The veteran could easily make the frame again.
Eldrickjones was ahead of him here in May and has gone close in hot company twice since. He’s another with an each-way say.
Dosman is back from nine months off and looks on a fair mark with trainer Roger Varian in decent form.
Telemark ran better than seventh suggests at York last time and likes this trip.
YORK
1.55
ARCHIVIST relished this decent ground when scooting in by more than four lengths at Leicester earlier this month.
That was just his second run for William Haggas and he can improve on this handicap debut over an ideal distance.
Cadarn is going the right way and landed back-to-back wins at Redcar before a little break.
He showed good pace on the front end last time and relishes this trip. He looks a big danger under William Buick.
Madame De Sevigne may just be better over seven furlongs but was just edged out over this mile at Nottingham and can’t be written off.
Barley may not have been entirely at home on soft ground in the Carlisle Bell on Wednesday after two decent runs on quicker going.
Shamrock Bay has few miles on the clock and has place claims for the Kublers despite going up in class.
2.25
PABORUS is improving with every run and had plenty in hand at Thirsk last time out in April.
That was his first run in six months and he’s had another little break since.
This seven-furlong trip on fast ground is ideal and he looked well up to Group 3 standard last time.
William Buick can land a rare win in the Wathnan Racing colours for trainer Ed Bethell who is having a big season.
Lethal Levi was just collared on the line in a Curragh Group 2 last time and has some hot handicaps on his CV.
The slight worry is the extra furlong he tackles today but he’ll take some pegging back from the front.
Formal deserves this hike in grade after taking a Listed prize at Epsom’s Derby meeting.
She goes on any ground and gets a big weight allowance as a three-year-old filly.
Lake Forest was a good fifth in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot 11 days ago.
He tried to come from a long way back there and this drop in grade will definitely boost his chances.
3.00
JM JUNGLE has a formidable record at York and comes here on the back of winning the red-hot Dash at Epsom last time.
He’s up 5lb for that but is in excellent form and should be well drawn in stall four. He can be relied on to go close again.
Habooba went from the front when winning here last month ahead of the tip and the form has been franked. A 6lb rise may not stop him from following up.
Regal Envoy has a brilliant strike-rate for a sprinter and made it five wins from his past six runs at Windsor 19 days ago.
This trip is ideal on any ground and he’s in the mix under Oisin Murphy.
Azure Angel clocked a personal best when scoring at Redcar last time.
She had the best of the draw but beat the track record so it was still a good effort.
Squealer has been knocking on the door and was touched off at Doncaster three Saturdays ago. A 3lb rise is fair and he likes quick ground.
