Chelsea 4 Benfica 1 (aet): Blues eventually reach Club World Cup quarters with extra-time blitz after TWO-HOUR delay
CHELSEA overcame the best efforts of Mother Nature and Malo Gusto to reach the last eight of the Club World Cup – in one of the most bizarre games to grace a major tournament.
The Blues were four minutes away from victory when reports of lightning forced a weather delay of almost TWO HOURS.

When play resumed, hapless defender Gusto conceded a penalty which allowed Benfica to equalise with just 60 seconds left on the clock to force extra time.
The Portuguese side then had a player sent off before Chelsea sub Christopher Nkunku stabbed home the scruffiest of goals to finally put his team into the last eight.
But the game which kicked off at 4pm local time did not finish until 8.30pm.
And Chelsea had to fly straight back to their Miami HQ immediately afterwards.
Reece James’ classy goal had Chelsea on the brink of reaching the quarter finals only for the weather to intervene and transform a tepid match into a remarkable experience.
Strict safety rules mean the players must come off the pitch and fans must leave their seats if lighting occurs within a ten mile radius of the ground.
That was at 5.54pm local time and the game did not resumed until 7.47pm. A hold up of one hour and 53 minutes.
Chelsea even posted pictures of their players keeping their tired legs warm by riding exercise bikes and playing keepy-uppy in the dressing room while waiting for the skies to clear.

Violent storms are normal in these parts at this time of year which means the same fate awaits games at the real World Cup next summer when 48 countries will be spread across the US.
It’s one thing to delay Chelsea v Benfica. Quite another to call a halt to Brazil versus France.

But amid all the drama Maresca’s men only had to hold on for a few minutes to steer themselves into the last eight and a date with Brazilians Palmeiras – the team they beat to win the 2022 Club World Cup.
But the delay clearly affected the Premier League side more than the Portuguese.
Chelsea were already riding their luck when Benfica mounted one last attack with just two of the six added minutes remaining.
Nicolas Otamendi headed across the area and Chelsea sub Gusto jumped to clear but the ball touched the back of his arm.
The ref was sent to the monitor by VAR and after a brief debate awarded a penalty.
Vastly experienced Argentina winger Angel di Maria calmly slotted home from the spot, sending his shot straight down the middle while Blues’ keeper Robert Sanchez dived to his left.

It had got so close for Chelsea too. They had controlled the first 86 minutes of the game with ease before the bizarre set of events kicked in.
Marc Cucurella, Pedro Neto and Cole Palmer had all gone close to scoring but they ended up paying for the missed chances by leaving Benfica in with a chance to get back in the game.
James curled in a classy free kick in the 65th minute to put Chelsea one up and they looked like seeing it out.
Gusto only came on in the 80th minute. The Frenchman was also guilty of a string of errors in Chelsea’s Conference League Final win last month and was taken off by Maresca at half time.
Benfica were reduced to ten men in extra time when sub Gianluca Prestianni was sent off for a second yellow card for a foul on Levi Colwill.

With the opposition a man down, Chelsea slowly piled on the pressure and won it in the 108th minute when Cole Palmer broke free.
He fed Moises Caicedo whose shot was only partially saved. Sub Nkunku pounced on the rebound but even that was blocked by defender Otamendi before the Frenchman got back on his feet and smashed home at the second attempt.
Winger Pedro Neto made it 3-1 in the 114th minute and Kiernan-Dewsbury Hall added a fourth with four minutes left.
Chelsea are edging closer to a last four all-Premier League meeting with Manchester City in the semi finals – in New York.

Chelsea player ratings: Reece James impresses with free kick as Liam Delap struggles to make an impact
CHELSEA forced their way into the Club World Cup quarter-finals win extradorinaiy fashion with a 4-1 win over Benfica.
The Blues were uninspiring as they played at pre-season pace until they were made to fight for their lives in extra-time and turned on the flair to get the better of the Portuguese giants.

Reece James‘ quick thinking from a wide free kick saw him find the bottom corner and give the few fans that made the journey to North Carolina something to cheer about.
However things sparked into life when, five minutes from time, referee Slavko Vincic brought the game to a halt and told the players to leave the pitch for a suspension due to extreme weather in the area.
That led to a TWO HOUR delay, seeing players play keepie-uppies in the dressing room and try and stay warm on electric bikes.

When they returned to action, with only a few minutes of football to finish off, substitute Malo Gusto gave away a penalty with a flailing hand and Benfica’s Angel Di Maria converted from the spot to force extra-time.
What had been a dull example of why this tournament has been criticised, quickly became one of the stories of the tournament and an eye-catching additional spell.
Thankfully for The Blues, Christopher Nkuku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall provided the goods to turn things back in their favour to send them through to the quarter-finals where they face Brazilian club Palmeiras on Saturday.
Here’s how SunSport’s Joshua Hall rated every Chelsea performance…
ROBERT SANCHEZ – 6
Not much he could have done to deny Angel Di Maria’s penalty and looked solid when called upon beyond that.
Still, Chelsea will still be hoping they can find an upgrade on the shot-stopper in the coming weeks of the summer window.
REECE JAMES – 8
Almost made a costly error when he tried to shield the ball from a Benfica attacker and let it role into Robert Sanchez’s hands in the first half.
Got away with it, but was close to gifting an opener to the Portuguese outfit.
He, like most players on the pitch, looked like he was playing within himself to avoid injury and fatigue at what is still deemed as a glorified post-season tour until the delay turned it on his head.
He used that sleepy atmosphere to catch out Anatoliy Trubin with a near-post free-kick to give his side the lead.

BENOIT BADIASHILE – 4
Not up to scratch to be a starting centre-back for Chelsea, even when they’re playing at half-pace and against no threat.
Perhaps the only time he was called upon saw him shakily deal with Vangelis Pavlidis by way of the Greek striker inexplicably throwing himself to the ground.
He was lucky because Pavilidis looked like he would have got the better of him. Substituted off for Tosin Adarabioyo immediately afterwards.
LEVI COLWILL – 7
Colwill has become a reliable defender and a ‘senior’ figure in this Chelsea team, despite being just 22 years old.
He doesn’t set the world alight, but he rarely make a mistake when called upon as the last line of defence.
Another solid performance from the youngster who appears to be relishing the responsibility he has been given by Maresca.
MARC CUCURELLA – 6
Terrific effort in the first half seemed destined for the top corner if not for a spectacular headed clearance off the line by Antonio Silva.
Denied again from close range when Trubin’s outstretched arm blocked what looked like a certain goal.
The more advanced role that Enzo Maresca is giving him may be putting him in better positions, but until he can actually consistently provide goals and assists from those areas it seems to be a confusing decision from the Blues boss.

ROMEO LAVIA – 5
An uninspiring performance in which he did little wrong and little to impress.
The lack of pace and any real impetus from Benfica meant that Chelsea didn’t really need three defensive minded midfielders on the pitch at all times.
As such, he struggled to influence anything.
MOISES CAICEDO – 6
Always a reliable ball-mover and rarely pulls of a challenge.
Unfortunately for Caicedo, the tempo for the majority of the game was so slow that he rarely had an opportunity to do what he does best in terms of breaking up play and progressing the ball.
Perhaps he needs to start adding more creativity to his game when he knows he has the likes of Romeo Lavia and Enzo Fernandez beside him.
He won’t be able to do that in the quarter-final though, after receiving a one-match ban for his second yellow card.

ENZO FERNANDEZ – 4
Not his best performance by a long stretch as he tried to impress against his former team.
This felt like an example of when Maresca’s insistence on deploying Fernandez as an attacking midfielder doesn’t pay off.
Yes, he’s scored one and assisted two from that position at the Club World Cup already, but it still looks like he would be better suited in a deeper position.

PEDRO NETO – 6
Some sloppy passing under little pressure when inside his own half and a real lack of danger when in the opposition half.
It’s easy to forget that Neto cost Chelsea in excess of £50m and scored just four league goals last season.
With the news of an agreement for Jamie Gittens, Neto will be looking over his shoulder knowing exactly whose place the 20-year-old is coming for.
But he can thank Benfica’s tired defence for splitting like the red sea and allowing him to bag a late safety-blanket goal in extra time to buy himself a little bit more kudos.
COLE PALMER – 7
Palmer must be growing frustrated with his teammates, constantly delivering dangerous balls into the box, shimmying into space and causing problems – yet he is rarely met with the same efforts from his fellow players.
It didn’t take long for it to show either, with Palmer waving his arms in frustration at not being picked out for a pass multiple times within the first 20 minutes of the game.
Liam Delap had a golden opportunity to pick him out in the box, but failed to beat the one Benfica defender that stood in his way – passing it straight onto his foot.
When things opened up after the delay Palmer was pulling the string to help force Chelsea back in front.

LIAM DELAP – 3
If Chelsea want to find a new goalscorer to solve their striker longstanding problems, they probably need to start passing to him.
That said, when he did have the ball he didn’t exactly impress – struggling to offer much in terms of creating for the players running off him.
Noticeably overhit a long ball to Palmer that ran all the way out for a throw-in during a promising counterattack.
While he couldn’t even stay onside to make the moment he did get in behind count.
It’s fair to say that patchy form is expected for such a young striker making such a big transfer, but on tonight’s showing Delap looked like he could have played for 900 minutes and never got his goal.

SUBS
Tosin Adarabioyo (for Badiashile, 70min) – 6
Looked comfortable enough for the period of time he was on the pitch as Badiashile’s replacement.
Malo Gusto (for James, 80min) – 4
His flailing hand flicked the ball to give away the penalty deep into injury time – a costly mistake that meant almost Chelsea were dumped from the Club World Cup.
Looked desperate to make up for his mistake, but never convinced that he could actually do so.
Christopher Nkunku (for Delap, 80min) – 8
Made the difference from the bench, smashing home a shot from point blank range to ensure Chelsea hadn’t fluffed their chances of advancing to the next round.
He could be playing his last few games for Chelsea with rumours swirling about his future, but this goal will be one he will always remember.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (for Fernandez, 80min) – 7
Joined in the party with a well-taken goal to give Chelsea a 4-1 lead in extra-time as Benfica’s tired bodies caught up with them.
He looked good from the moment he stepped on the pitch, more like the player Enzo Maresca had at Leicester.

Trevoh Chalobah (for Lavia, 86min) – 7
Made a crucial interception to deny Benfica to snatch an extra-time winner through Andrea Belotti.
Like Tosin, he continues to prove why there is no reason for Badiashile to be starting games for this Chelsea side.

Boy, 2, born with one kidney fights for life after being stung 150 times by wasps when he bumped into nest on toy car
A TODDLER missing a kidney is fighting for his life after being stung more than 150 times by wasps in a nightmare accident.
Little Beckham Reed, two, was swarmed head-to-toe by yellow jackets after bumping into their nest while riding in a toy car with his cousins in Georgia.

His parents, Mariah and Peyton, raced him to hospital where he was given morphine and Benadryl before being sent home.
“They said his breathing was okay so they didn’t need to keep him,” family friend Tiffany Hewatt wrote on a GoFundMe set up to help with mounting medical bills.
But horror struck less than a day later when Beckham’s skin turned yellow.
He was rushed to another ER and diagnosed with multiple organ failure affecting his heart, liver and his only kidney.
“Due to his age and size and the amount of stings he had, his little body was unable to handle the amount of toxins in his body,” said Hewatt, a registered nurse.
Beckham was admitted to the ICU at Memorial Savannah Hospital and hooked up to a ventilator, dialysis machine and pumped with life-saving IV meds.
“There is no antivenom for yellow jackets so all they can do is support his body while the toxins work their way out,” Hewatt explained.
On Wednesday, Beckham’s hemoglobin dropped to a dangerously low 6.8 — forcing doctors to give him more blood.
He’s also being tube-fed and was recently taken off blood pressure meds.
“We know the dialysis and sedating meds are causing the BP drop.
Beckham is waking up more and we know this is good news because he is STRONG and a great kicker,” Hewatt added.
“However, we don’t want him pulling the vent or other lines so they have to keep adjusting his sedating meds.”
The family is desperate to see if his only kidney will recover once he comes off dialysis.
Doctors hope that could happen as soon as tomorrow, though concerns remain the brave tot might yank out his lines.
“We are so ready for him to be off the vent and to hear his voice again,” Hewatt wrote.
The family’s GoFundMe has been launched to help cover soaring hospital costs.
It comes after an adorable seven-month-old baby girl was mauled to death by the family’s pitbull in a harrowing attack.
Little Elizah Turner was bitten by one of her family’s three pitbulls on inside their home in Columbus, Ohio.
The tot was rushed to a nearby fire station in May before being taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Cops said there were multiple dogs inside the home at the time of the horror, but it’s still unclear which one bit the infant.
Columbus Police Sgt. James Fuqua told local outlet WBNS the incident is being treated as a “tragic accident” and no charges are expected.
‘Irreplaceable’ 105-year-old Rolls Royce stolen in hotel heist moments before European tour
A RARE 105-year-old Rolls Royce valued at £300,000 was stolen from a hotel on the evening of a vintage car expedition.
The 1920 Silver Ghost was on a trailer at a hotel near Grays, Essex, on Wednesday night.

It was about to be transported to Tilbury Docks and on to Helsinki, Finland.
But the “irreplaceable” car had vanished when owner Bryan Fitton went to check on it at 6am the next morning.
The 82-year-old from Wilmslow, Cheshire, is “heartbroken” at the loss.
Essex Police is investigating and urged anyone with information, CCTV, dashcam or other footage to get in contact.
The owner is offering a £2,000 reward for the car’s return.
Bryan told the Mail: “I am hoping someone can spot the car as it’s so rare and help me get the trip of a lifetime back on track – hence the reward.
“The car is full of irreplaceable parts – it’s an original and has even got the original Lady on the grill.
“The car has been all over the world and is an advert for British motors – it’s been everywhere and it gets stolen in Essex – it’s just appalling.”
He spent years rebuilding the car and has driven it all around the world.
It has toured England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Austria among other nations.
However this trip was set to be Bryan’s first trip to the Baltic States with his beloved car.
Development of the Silver Ghost goes back to the start of the 20th century.
Around 7874 Silver Ghosts were produced between 1907 and 1926, with American President Woodrow Wilson even owning one of the cars.
It was named the best car in the world by Autocar in 1907.
