Ben Askren health update as ex-UFC star’s wife confirms he has undergone double lung transplant
BEN ASKREN has undergone a double lung transplant after being left in a life-threatening condition in hospital.
The former UFC welterweight star, 40, was hospitalised earlier in the month with a severe case of pneumonia brought on by a staph infection.

Askren was in a critical condition in a Las Vegas hospital and, at one stage, was even “unresponsive”, according to his wife, Amy.
After a number of small, yet positive, updates from Amy – as well as friends and former rivals – there has now been cause for real relief.
Askren’s wife has now revealed the former MMA ace has undergone a double lung transplant.
Amy called it a “gift” and claimed they will be “forever thankful” while urging fans to keep him in their thoughts while his body adjusts to the new organs.
In a statement, she wrote: “We are so thankful to share that Ben has received a double lung transplant.
“We are forever thankful to the donor and his family.
“This is the beginning of a new lifestyle for Ben, but every new day he has is a gift.
“It still doesn’t feel real that he was walking around completely healthy just 5 weeks ago. So much can change so quickly.”
She continued: “Please keep Ben in your prayers that his body welcomes the new lungs as if they were his own.
“I am constantly in awe of all the people carrying us through right now. I can’t wait to tell Ben all about it.
“I’m hopeful that in coming weeks Ben will be able to give the next update, but hopefully he will wait until the drugs wear off.”
Askren – who made his name in wrestling and appeared at the 2008 Olympics – retired from MMA in November 2019 having won one of his three fights in the promotion.
But he briefly reentered the world of combat sports in April 2021 for a lucrative boxing match against Jake Paul, which he lost via first-round KO.
Askren’s highly-publicised boxing bout with YouTuber Paul saw 500,000 PPV buys.
Paul, then aged 24, won the bout via TKO in one minute and 59 seconds of the opening bell.

Woman, 42, arrested in pregnant mum murder probe as emotional tributes left at Down scene in ‘incredibly tragic case’
A SECOND arrest has been made in the probe into the murder of a pregnant mum, as emotional tributes were left at the tragic scene today.
A number of MLAs raised concerns over gender-based violence as police continue to question a 28-year-old man, and a woman was arrested over the murder of pregnant mother-of-two Sarah Montgomery.

The 27-year-old died at a house in Donaghadee in Co Down at the weekend.
The Stormont Assembly was told she was the 27th adult woman to be killed in Northern Ireland since 2020.
SDLP MLA Cara Hunter said the death of Ms Montgomery was an “unspeakable act of violence which has robbed her children of their mother and shattered a family forever”.
She added: “There is no grief more profound than that of a child torn from the love, safety and care of their mother.
“Their lives undoubtedly changed forever.”
Ms Hunter said: “This is not an isolated incident. It is part of a worsening epidemic of violence against women and girls in Northern Ireland.
“We are failing women, we are failing children and we are failing to meet this crisis with sufficient urgency, co-ordination and political will that it so greatly requires.
“Too many women in our communities live in fear, fear in their homes, fear on the streets and fear in their relationships.
“This fear is not imagined. It is real and it is justified.”
DUP North Down MLA Stephen Dunne described the death of Ms Montgomery as “devastating”.
27TH KILLED SINCE 2020
He added: “Sarah is the 27th adult woman to be killed in Northern Ireland since 2020.
“The majority of these woman have been killed in their own homes, which is a truly shocking and devastating figure.
“A home should be a place of refuge and safety, but sadly that is not always the case.
“Again, it highlights the need for tougher sentencing as well, when we see so many lives ended and totally devastated and shattered with this ongoing scourge of our society of violence against women and girls.”
He added: “Donaghadee is a very close-knit and caring community and I know the community there is already rallying around the family of Sarah Montgomery.
“There is a real sense of shock and sadness and alarm around the devastating events at the weekend.”
A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.
And PSNI have also arrested a woman, 42, in Belfast on suspicion of assisting an offender.
SECOND ARREST
Investigating officers have confirmed both the man and woman were known to Sarah.
They are currently not looking for anyone else in relation to the young mum’s death, but are continuing to appeal for information.
In a statement today the PSNI said: “Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team investigating the murder of 27-year-old Sarah Montgomery in Donaghadee, have made a second arrest.
“A 42-year-old woman has been arrested in Belfast earlier today, Monday 30th June, on suspicion of assisting an offender. She remains in custody assisting police with their enquiries.
“A 28-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder over the weekend, remains in police custody.
“Both suspects were known to the victim and at present, no-one else is being sought in connection with the crime.
“Police continue to appeal to the public for help with the investigation.”
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Phillips added: “We are working at pace to determine the circumstances of Sarah’s tragic murder and need help from people in the Donaghadee and Belfast areas.
“Did you see or hear anything unusual or suspicious in the Elmfield Walk area of Donaghadee between 1.20pm and 2.20pm on Friday 27th July?
“Did you see a yellow Jeep Avenger in the Airport Road area of the Belfast Harbour Estate, East Belfast between 3.30pm and 4.15pm on Friday 27th July? Do you have CCTV, dashcam or phone footage which could be useful in our investigation?
“Even if you think it may not be important, please come forward and speak with us as even very small pieces of information could prove invaluable to us.
MAKE A REPORT
“This is an incredibly tragic case which has devastated Sarah’s family and friends, and leaves two small children without their beloved Mum.
“Specially trained officers will continue to support Sarah’s family and we are working to do everything in our power to bring anyone involved in this senseless murder to justice.”
He added: “If you know anything that will help with our investigation, please contact us on 101 quoting reference number 865 28/06/25.”
“A report can also be made using the online reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport
“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”

18 names put forward for National Children’s Hospital in €4.5k taxpayer spend with bizarre Acorn and Dolphin options
THE Dolphin Children’s Hospital was among the names ruled out for the National Children’s Hospital.
Acorn and Rainbow were also among 18 put forward in a €4,500 consultancy process.

The Irish Sun last week revealed how a “specialist branding agency” was brought in to help decide the new Dublin hospital’s name.
But the Health Minister, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, snubbed the odd suggestions and went for the basic National Children’s Hospital Ireland.
The consultancy process cost the State €4,500, with a list of 17 other options drawn up in the process.
They include the Kernal Children’s Hospital, Acorn Children’s Hospital and Dolphin Children’s Hospital.
A series of other variations includes names like The Pearl, Silverbridge, The Wellspring, The Grove, Farelight and Rainbow Children’s Hospital.
The process also threw up some Irish based options including Solas Children’s Hospital, Rialto Children’s Hospital and the All Ireland Children’s Hospital.
The Summit, Lumina and the Central Children’s Hospital were also on the list of names recommended to the Department of Health.
Officials said the “specialist branding agency” was working to a brief of “engagement and inclusivity, being mindful of history and time and cost effectiveness”.
An extensive consulting process saw the names put to a number of groups, with young people quizzed going for the National Children’s Hospital Ireland, unveiled as the winner last week.#
However, in 2023, the Seanad passed a motion across all parties which called for the hospital to be named after Dr Kathleen Lynn — a doctor and activist who was involved in the 1916 Easter Rising.
And FF Senator Mary Fitzpatrick last week blasted the Minister for “wasting public funds” on a naming process that ignored the motion.
Sinn Fein were also highly critical of the Minister for not naming the hospital after the Easter Rising hero.
However, Minister Carroll MacNeill said she went with the National Children’s Hospital Ireland as she believed it would make it easier for people trying to get to the facility.
But she wants Dr Lynn to be part of the hospital, explaining: “I would like to name something in the hospital after her.
“Whether it’s a wing or maybe an education auditorium so that generations of students perhaps can see her name and reflect on her name and know who she is.”

I’m an OnlyFans model about to take on Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, here’s what I’m allowed to post – and what’s banned
NOVAK DJOKOVIC will face a French tennis star on Tuesday who has a side hustle as an OnlyFans model.
Alexandre Muller – the world No.41 – will face the legendary 24-time Grand Slam champion on Centre Court on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old has never been beyond the second round of a major in 12 attempts.
But he has gained an army of fans outside the sport because of his account on the infamous adult site.
In his biography, he describes himself as “sexiest professional tennis player from France”.
OnlyFans is a platform where people can post risque photos and images of themselves, some of which are semi-pornographic, and earn lots of cash from the public.
Muller, who has earned more than $3million (£2.2m) in career tennis prize money, insists he does not do anything bar the odd topless gym photo.
France’s No.4 best player says the site organisers are trying to change their tardy image and he likes to show off instead behind-the-scenes footage from tournaments around the world.
However, he is NOT allowed to post content from the Wimbledon locker rooms and can only show off facilities which are in public areas.
Speaking to SunSport, Muller said: “My agent told me that OnlyFans wanted to support me.
BEST ONLINE CASINOS – TOP SITES IN THE UK

“Of course, I was thinking, is it a bit tricky to sign with OnlyFans? But to see the project, they want to change their image.
“They are supporting lots of players, golfers, boxers, UFC fighters, a lot of sportsmen.
“At the beginning my friends were laughing at me. Then I showed them my platform and they said: ‘Okay, it’s very cool.’ Everybody wants to sign up now.
“I started two years ago. After two-three months the ATP (the sport’s governing body) told me to get the OnlyFans logo off my sleeve.
“They said it was not the image of the ATP and wanted me to stop.”
Other tennis stars on the site include Australian maverick Nick Kyrgios, French ace Chloe Paquet and Spaniard Pedro Martinez, who faces Britain’s George Loffhagen in the first round on Tuesday.
Muller says that the interactions with punters is much nicer on OnlyFans compared to the nasty betting messages he gets off angry individuals via Instagram.

The Poissy-born star, who won the Hong Kong Open in January, said: “On Instagram, I receive only messages from the guys who bet on me and lose money, who say a lot of bad words.
“When I go on OnlyFans there are only real fans who support me and send some nice messages even after some matches I’ve lost.
“I enjoy talking to these kinds of people and not the guys on Instagram.
“About 99 per cent of people who talk to me are very nice. There’s no problem.
‘DO I POST RISQUE PHOTOS?’
“People ask me about what happens behind the scenes, what does it look like, the gym, the courts. I just post things about tennis.
“Do I post risque photos? No, no. I don’t do it. Because I don’t want to.
“My job is a tennis player. Not making movies for adults. I received a lot of messages, saying: ‘Alex, can you show me this?’ But not my body.
“I like to show people where I go in the world, some nice places, my routine.
“It’s not easy every day being a tennis player. We train every week. Not a lot of days off or holidays. I enjoy this life.
“This year I won my first title. For the moment I don’t have any pain anywhere, the physique is good, everything is great.”
