SKY SPORTS have signed the biggest TV deal in darts – and it is all down to the “Luke Littler effect”.
The subscription channel has agreed a new five-year contract with the Professional Darts Corporation to showcase six majors annually between 2025-2030.
Luke Littler’s rise has led to a surge in darts viewing figuresReutersPALittler’s world championships defeat to Luke Humphries in January 2004 was Sky Sports’ most watched non-football event ever[/caption]
Starting in December, the agreement will cover the PDC World Darts Championship at Ally Pally, the 17-week Premier League road show, the World Cup of Darts, the World Matchplay in Blackpool, the World Grand Prix in Leicester and the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton.
Last month, the Telegraph reported that Sky had beaten Netflix to a £125million deal – worth £25million per year, more than double its existing rights fee in recognition of the growth in darts viewing figures.
SunSport has put those figures to Sky and the PDC but both declined to comment.
Sky have broadcast the sport since December 1993 when the PDC (formerly the World Darts Council) set up a rival world championship following a bitter legal battle and split from the now-defunct British Darts Organisation (BDO).
What strengthened the hand of the PDC in the negotiations this time was the incredible emergence and nationwide interest in Littler over the past 14 months.
When he reached the World Darts Championship final on his debut in January 2024, aged just 16, it captured the imagination of the sporting public.
A record non-football Sky Sports/Now TV audience of 4.8million tuned in as Littler was beaten 7-4 by Luke Humphries in the finale to the flagship event in North London.

Figures throughout 2024 on Sky rose considerably as Littler played on tour for the first time.
Notably, he won the Premier League Darts – he hit a nine-darter in the final win over Humphries – and banked £315,000 in prize money.
In November, he became Grand Slam champion when he crushed Martin Lukeman 16-3 in the final.
In 2024, Littler came top in Google’s most-searched athletes in the UK, ahead of football superstars Lamine Yamal and Jude Bellingham as well as Olympic champions Simone Biles and Adam Peaty.
Littler has earned more than £1.5million in prize money since turning professional and brought a much younger audience to the sport.

IRISH holidaymakers are set for a major blow as a number of Ryanair destinations have been axed for 2025.
The budget airline has made the decision to cancel flights in some European spots due to “excessive fees” and aviation taxes.
Ryanair will scrap flights to Aalborg in DenmarkThey will close their base at Billund Airport in Denmark
The low-cost airline is now scrapping flights to and from Aalborg.
The news comes after Denmark announced new aviation taxes.
The tax has introduced a 50DKK (€6.70) fee for all passengers departing Denmark, which is paid for by airlines.
The cancellation will see Ryanair‘s base at Billund Airport closing, as they scrap the flights by the end of March 2025.
A spokesperson said: “We are very disappointed to announce the closure of our 2 aircraft Billund base and our operations at Aalborg from the end of March, but we have been left with no other choice following the Danish Govt’s short-sighted decision to introduce a harmful aviation tax from Jan 2025.”
This will result in 1.7million fewer seats to and from the city, 32 route cancellations and the loss of two aircrafts as Ryanair reallocate capacity to other EU countries that don’t have aviation taxes.
Denmark will now face a decline in connectivity, tourism and jobs.
Sweden, Hungary and Italy are eliminating aviation taxes in an effort to boost growth, which will see more tourists fly there.
According to Aviation24, Ryanair pilots and crew in Billund have been offered transfers within the airline’s network.
As Ryanair close down its route, it’s expected that KLM, the other airline to provide flights from Dublin to Aalborg will hike up their prices.
And unfortunately for passengers, this isn’t the only route that has been given the chop.
The Irish budget airline will quit operating in Jerez, and Vallodolid, and reduce flights in and out of Vigo, Santiago de Compostela, Zaragoza, Santander, and Asturias.
Ryanair said the move was down to fees put in place by State-controlled airport operator Aena.
The flight cuts will see 12 routes affected with capacity being dropped by 18 per cent, with 800,000 passenger seats cancelled.
Ryanair said they’ll move the aircraft and capacity to countries “where governments encourage growth” like Italy, Sweden, Croatia, Hungary and Morocco.
The airline has long had issue with fees charged by Aena, previously taking action over attempts to increase fees amid a five-year charge freeze.
The Irish airline is offering cheap flights to over 35 destinations but bargain punters need to act fast as the sale is around for a limited time.
Thousands of flight seats are on offer with fares starting from just €35.99 one way.
The sale includes a range of popular cities, providing an affordable opportunity for those who wish to adventure in the hidden gems of Europe.
However, jet setters must act fast to bag these sales as the seats are quickly selling out and thousands of holidaymakers are busy planning their city breaks with the upcoming bank holiday weekends.
FLIGHTS SCRAPPED BY RYANAIR
Ryanair have scrapped or reduced a number of flights to European hotspots, leaving jetsetters short.

MADE in Chelsea fans may have spotted a beautiful island on the TV show – with the crew often filmed on the French island of Corsica.
Even better – it takes just over two hours to get there from the UK for some Mediterranean sunshine.

If you thought the island of Corsica was just a pricey place for the socialites of Chelsea, think again.
It is possible to achieve on a budget as we found direct return flights for as little as £74 from London Gatwick to Corsica with EasyJet.
As for accommodation, you can find hotels for as little as £45 per night for two.
With over 200 beautiful beaches, it can be hard to know which to choose.
One that has been recommended for being “ideal for families” is Ostriconi.
Found on the north of the island, the beach is soft and sandy with shallow water perfect for paddling.
One TripAdvisor reviewer wrote: “This was definitely the best beach we found in Corsica.”
Just note that there are no facilities, so you’ll have to take your own towels and drinks onto the beach.
In contrast, the Tamaricciu beach found on the south of the island comes with loungers perched on the sand.
There’s also a beach club at the very end of the spot where you can enjoy gelato, a cold drink, or local food.

For anyone seeking history, take a gander around the Villages of la Balagne.
The region, high up on the mountains, gives incredible sea views over the island and it feels like you’re walking back in time as they’re barely changed from when they were built centuries ago.
The region was once the home of artists and in the village of Pigna winding streets you’ll find hand-painted music boxes and colourful ceramics for sale.
Each village offers its own crafts, from jams and honey to jewellery, hand-woven baskets and oils – so it’s worth a visit if you want something more than a basic souvenir.
The official travel guide for the island suggests visiting Ajaccio, the capital of Corsica and the birth place of former French Emperor,Napoleon Bonaparte – and you’ll see his legacy everywhere.
His former house Maison Bonaparte is a two-minute walk to the marina, and his name also appears on streets and in the museums.

GettyYou can see the French and Italian inspired architecture on the streets of Ajaccio[/caption]
The heart of the city is a great place to explore chic shops, cafés and restaurants.
The island is also a great place to hop on a boat tour. There’s one that stops off to enjoy a Corsican wine tasting hosted by a sommelier and a local wine-grower while watching the sunset.
If staying on-land is what you’d prefer there are guided bus tours, organised walking groups and even a train that will take you on a two hour tour along the coastline from £15 per person.
If you fancy doing Corsica like the Made in Chelsea cast, head to the Cala Rossa on the south of the island.
It’s an exclusive area visited by celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Beyoncé who have both stayed in the glamorous Domaine de Murtoli hotel.
The cast also headed to the popular beach side restaurant, Le Tiki Chez Marco, in Lecci. On TripAdvisor, the restaurant is firm favourite in the area.
Our Corsica Trip from Hiking to Cocktails
Sun Travel took a trip to Corsica and here were our best bits...
Our stay at Marina D’Erba Rossa with Eurocamp was ideal for a family getaway, featuring a cosy campervan, a sparkling lagoon pool, and delightful touches like peacocks roaming the site and a miniature zoo that captivated the children.
Mornings began with freshly baked baguettes and pastries enjoyed al fresco amidst leafy trees and golden sands, while evenings were spent indulging in mouthwatering Mediterranean dishes at the campsite’s Le Nemo or local restaurants.
Beyond the beach, Corsica’s rugged wilderness beckoned with hidden swimming holes, scenic hiking trails, and thrilling canyoning adventures, while the historic forts and vibrant marina at Bonifacio added a cultural twist to our trip.
From soft sands and swaying palm trees to the fusion of French and Italian flavours, Corsica delivered a dream family holiday we can’t wait to experience again.
One guest praised the restaurant for the “copious cheese and charcuterie platter” another added it was “true paradise with beautiful sunset and views”
The cast later dined in Porto-Vecchio with the cast spotted at al fresco restaurantLes Beaux Arts.
As for daytime activities, the cast took a boat out on the water adn headed to Bonifacio on the southern tip of Corsica.
Here they rented a boat for the day to explore the hidden beaches only accessible by boat or foot.
Temperatures on Corsica see highs of 30C between May and September. In the winter, the average temperature is around 12C.
That being said, the island has hundreds of days of sunshine throughout the year, so it is still a great choice for a winter getaway.
