How amateur Brit ace Oliver Tarvet CAN claim £99,000 in Wimbledon prize money thanks to loophole to ‘$10k college

AMATEUR star Oliver Tarvet can claim his £99,000 Wimbledon prize money in “actual necessary expenses over the course of a calendar year”.

On Wednesday, the world No.733 from St Albans will play Carlos Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion, in the second round.

It is an incredible underdog story and were he to win, as improbably as they may sound, then it would be the biggest upset in the competition’s history.

Tarvet has an interesting background and is a part-time player because he studies at the University of San Diego.

The 21-year-old, who gets no support from the LTA, is entering his senior year where he is majoring in Communications with a minor in Marketing.

Alongside his education, he has been able to play thousands of tennis matches in a collegiate-style system.

Under National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules, Tarvet is not allowed to take winnings from competitions outside of the college set-up.

Yet according to his coach, he is able to claim back plentiful expenses, which would cover his accommodation and travel costs, plus those for his coaches.

Ryan Keckley, head of men’s tennis at the University of San Diego, landed in the UK via Chicago at 6am on Monday, just in time to watch his star pupil win the opening match against fellow qualifier Leandro Riedi from Switzerland.

Still suffering from jet lag, Keckley said: “There’s an outdated bylaw of the NCAA, probably two or three years old, of the ‘$10,000 rule’.

“But there have been so many changes of how you can get money into people’s back pockets.

“One of the changes that took place is you are allowed actual necessary expenses over the course of a calendar year. As long as you have the expenses to show, then all good.

“So say he played a tournament in June and he flew there. It’s 1000 bucks and the hotel is another 1000 bucks. And the meals are another 1000 bucks.

“That’s $3,000 expenses. Then he goes and plays another tournament, another tournament, another tournament. Four tournaments.

“Times 3000 by four and that’s $12,000 he can offset his expenses by. Put a coach on that for $2000-4000 a week. That adds up.

“What every college player has to do is work through that, until the NCAA kind of rights the ship. But that’s going to be a work in progress.

“No profit. It’s all actual and necessary expenses.

“In my opinion, Oli has proven himself worthy of any candidate here. And that’s the beauty about sport, you just never know.

“Do I think he has the capability of going out there and beating Alcaraz? Absolutely, because every challenge that we put in front of him, he’s done sensational.”

I built a hobbit house on wheels for £200 & now have zero bills – it’s only 13ft long & my roof comes from an old pigsty

A SAVVY man has built himself a hobbit house on wheels for just £200.

And now, the bargain hunter who is on a mission to cut costs, lives in his unique tiny home and doesn’t have to pay any rent or bills.

The man, who lives an off-grid lifestyle and doesn’t pay any rent or bills, explained that he used bits from an old pigsty and a stable to create his tiny pad[/caption]

Eager to show off his off-grid lifestyle, the content creator who posts online under the username ‘The Grow Co’, gave his followers a close-up look at his home, which he made using bits from an old pigsty and a stable.

In a bid to live sustainably, the man explained “In total, this trailer cost around £200 to build – you can’t even rent a house for £200 a month, never mind build a house.”

He described his home as “possibly one of the smallest trailers you would have seen” and revealed that he has spent the last six months living inside this trailer, whilst travelling around the UK and through Wales.

While the main section of the trailer is 8ft long by 4ft wide, in total, the small home is just 13ft long, which he claims is “absolutely tiny for a house.”

He even made a large storage box on the back of the hobbit house, which he uses as a shed to store his tools.

But he isn’t bothered by the size of his pad, as he shared: “I’ve spent the last six months living inside of that tiny space that has everything that I need to survive and live on a daily basis comfortably.”

The DIY fan then explained how he made the off-grid home, as he acknowledged: “About 90% of the materials in this trailer were reclaimed or acquired for free – the wood for the door, the window and the box on the back, were all the walls of an old stable that somebody had taken down and was gonna burn the wood.”

Not only this, but he then confirmed: “The roofing sheets are really thick, the big industrial sort of ones, these were from an old pigsty.

“The glass in the window used to be a shelf from an old glass display unit.”

The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @thegrowcouk, just three days ago, has clearly left many open-mouthed as it has quickly racked up 82,900 views.

It’s also amassed 2,777 likes and 224 comments.

Social media users were left stunned by the man’s tiny home and many raced to the comments to share their thoughts.

The rise of tiny homes

By Jonathan Rolande

Property expert Jonathan Rolande told Fabulous: The reason we are seeing more creative ways of finding a home: super-high property prices and rents. Younger people are remaining in the family home later in life to avoid paying high prices and to save for a deposit. With increasingly busy lives, staying within a larger family group makes sense, chores such as gardening and housework can be shared.

Garages are rarely used for their intended purpose as cars are far more reliable and less prone to rust and so are perfectly happy outside. On the other hand, the amount of property space per person has been shrinking – converting a garage can make great sense.

Things to consider. (the boring stuff)

Usually easier than building from scratch but still a lot to do to turn a garage in to a habitable space.

You’ll need to check if you need planning (more likely to be required if the garage is detached).

Building Regulations stipulate many things to make homes safe and secure. Consider

Walls, are they cavity?

Roof height

Windows

How will you get plumbing, electrics and drainage connected

Insulation – it will be cold!

Fire safety

Damp proofing

Also consider if, by converting, you are adding or deducting value from the main home. Garages can add value in busy urban areas where parking is limited.

One person said: “Wow this is fantastic, well done you. I wish all the homeless people could have one.”

Another added: “Looks amazing!”

Good for you! I thought it was a chicken coop at first!

TikTok user

A third commented: “Well done! This is the way forward.”

At the same time, one user wrote: “Love it, really love to see inside.”

Meanwhile, someone else penned: “Good for you! I thought it was a chicken coop at first!”

Petra Kvitova’s Wmbledon career is over

An emotional Kvitova wiped away tears from her face after embracing Navarro at the net for the final time.

The former world No.1 received a huge standing ovation on Court One on Tuesday afternoon.

Navarro was quick to give up the floor to Kvitova and joined in on applauding the Czech star, who won Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014.

BBC pundit Martina Navratilova, who won 18 Grand Slams in her heyday, was also overcome with emotions on commentary.

The tearful Czech-American legend said: “It’s hard for me. She’s just such a nice person on and off the court.

“A grand role model for kids everywhere and Czech tennis.”

Soaking up the crowd and speaking for the last time on Centre Court, Kvitova said: “Thank you for the atmosphere, it was wonderful to play on this beautiful court. Congrats Emma.

“I wish we could have played for a bit longer. I never dreamed of winning Wimbledon and I did it twice so this is something very special.

“I will miss Wimbledon, I will miss tennis, I will miss you fans but I am ready for the next chapter of life as well.

“I can’t wait to be back as a member. Thanks to the people who helped me to improve as a player and a person.

“I didn’t have many tennis coaches in my career but my first one was my dad and he is here today.

“My last one is my husband so I want to thank them all and the people in my box.

“Thank you to all my family back home. Thank you very much Wimbledon.”

She was far from her best today but the Czech still showed fleeting moments of what made her a winner at Wimbledon in the past.

Emma Navarro knocks out two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova with a 6-3 6-1 victory in just an hour.

It marks Kvitova’s final appearance at Wimbledon before heading into retirement after a great career.

Wimbledon maverick reveals Sir Alex Ferguson phone call still gives him goosebumps

A SIR ALEX FERGUSON phone call in 2016 still gives British wheelchair tennis ace Andy Lapthorne goosebumps.

The legendary ex-Manchester United boss called Lapthorne ahead of the 2016 Paralympic games in Rio.

The 34-year-old credits the call for life changing results, according to a recent interview with The Times.

He said: “That phone call is still giving me goosebumps.”

Lapthorne – who has cerebral palsy which affects his ability to stand for extend periods or fully straighten his arms – competes in wheelchair tennis in quad singles and doubles events .

He has been ranked no.1 in the world in quad singles, and is a 16-time Grand Slam winner in quad doubles, a record he will attempt to improve at Wimbledon next month.

By the time of the call, Lapthorne already had one singles and five doubles Grand Slam wins – but it was not a great tennis players that Ferguson compared him to.

Lapthorne continued: “We chatted about Eric Cantona, because he had been told what I was like, a bit of a maverick.

“He was talking about embracing that, but also about listening to people that know me.”

The call was not the end of Sir Alex’s support of Lapthorne, who received an email of encouragement from the iconic manager following his semi-final victory later in the tournament.

Sir Alex’s call spurred the Brit all the way to the finals in Rio, where he was eventually defeated in straight sets by Australian Dylan Alcott.

The winning influence did not fade with that loss though, as Lapthorne went on to become a serial winner in wheelchair tennis, especially in the quad doubles.

He remains the fourth ranked player in quad singles, and the third ranked player in quad doubles.

Earlier this week he brought home silverware in both disciplines on home soil at the Eastbourne Open – continuing to prove Sir Alex’s advice right after almost a decade.

Lapthorne will take to the Wimbledon court with tennis partner Greg Slade next month to attempt to win his third doubles trophy at the event, having last won it in 2021.

Knife amnesty bin installed just yards from Wimbledon as crime warning is issued

COUNCIL chiefs installed a knife bin near Wimbledon just days before this year’s Championships kicked off.

The amnesty box – where people can surrender their weapons – was instated at a church last week.

All blades, including soon-to-be-banned ninja swords, can be handed in at the secure bin on Pollards Hill.

It will be emptied by specialist organisation Words4Weapons.

Councillor Edith Macauely MBE, the London Borough of Merton’s Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, said she welcomed the move as “a meaningful step towards reducing violence and promoting safety” in the area.

She added: “Knife crime has devastating effects for everyone involved – the victims, the perpetrators and the community as a whole.

“Our message must go out loud and clear: you never make yourself safer by carrying a knife.

“This new amnesty bin gives anyone who has made the error of acquiring a dangerous weapon the chance to correct their mistake and make themselves safer with no questions asked.”

The amnesty box is part of a Home Office-funded scheme to tackle knife crime in the UK.

Thirty seven other knife surrender bins have been installed across London and other violence hotspots.

It comes after Wimbledon star Yulia Putintseva paused her first-round match on Monday over fears a “crazy” fan had a knife courtside.

The world No33 – who lost in 45 minutes without winning a game – reported the spectator to the umpire.

Fans said the man had been attempting to talk to the Russian-born ace, who plays for Kazakhstan, at the start of her clash with American Amanda Anisimova on Court 15.

Putintseva was heard saying: “Can you take him out because maybe he has a knife? I am not going to continue playing until he leaves. These people are dangerous, they are crazy.”

The chair umpire consulted security and the game was resumed.

It is unclear if any action was taken against the spectator, but it is understood he was not carrying a knife and would have been subject to a search for weapons when he entered the grounds.

When asked about the incident on Tuesday, Wimbledon head of operations Michelle Dite told SunSport: “We’ve been very upfront about this, that if the players have got any concerns, if they feel that there’s something that doesn’t feel quite right, they absolutely should bring it to light. We would rather know about these things.”

She added: “One of the players had some concerns, they went and spoke to the umpire, we checked it all out with security.”

Wimbledon bosses played down the incident, including Putintseva’s “knife” remark.

A spokesman insisted: “Security was in the area. The issue was dealt with.”
