Mum who lost arm & leg after she was run over by two Tube trains ‘contributed to her own injuries’, TfL claim

A MUM who lost an arm and leg after she was run over by two Tube trains “contributed to her own injuries”, Transport for London claim.

Sarah de Lagarde slipped on a wet platform at High Barnet station in North London and fell down the gap between the train and the platform.

The 46-year-old desperately cried for help but no one came to her aid as she lay undiscovered on the track for 15 minutes.

Sarah was eventually rescued but needed to have her leg and arm amputated after she was run over by two Tube trains.

The PR executive, who now uses two prosthetic limbs including a bionic arm, has launched a £25million legal battle against London Underground Ltd (LUL), part of Transport for London (TfL).

In defence documents submitted to the High Court, TfL has instead shifted the blame to Sarah – claiming her injuries were a result of her own negligence.

Denying liability, lawyers argued she “placed herself in a position of danger” because of how she got off the train, Mail Online reports.

TfL also suggest the horror was “caused or contributed to by the claimant’s negligence”.

Sarah was returning home from work at around 10pm on September 30, 2022, when she fell asleep on the train.

The mum was woken up by another passenger when the train reached the end of the line at High Barnet.

After getting off the train, Sarah noticed it was returning back the same way and stepped backwards to get back on.

But she slipped and fell through the gap on to the track.

Lawyers for TfL say: “The claimant took a few steps forward on to the platform and then took a few steps backwards, before the rear of her body struck the rear side of the door of the train she had exited from.

“The claimant continued to move backwards and, approximately seven seconds after exiting the train, she fell into the gap between carriages five and six of the train.”

Around five minutes later, the Northern Line driver walked back through the train to start the return journey southbound.

He noticed Sarah’s bag wedged between the train and the platform, which he later handed to lost property, but did not hear her screams or investigate further.

As the train left the platform, it caused devastating injuries to Sarah’s right arm.

She attempted to open her phone but her face was so badly injured the face ID did not work and it was too wet from the rain for the touch screen to respond.

A second train then drove over Sarah – this time running over her right leg.

Speaking previously, she said: “Twenty-two tonnes of steel crushed my limbs, and, if that wasn’t bad enough, I remained on the tracks undetected until the second train came into the station, crushing me for a second time.”

A judge indicated an eight-day trial would be listed at the High Court for early 2027.

A TfL spokesperson said: “We are responding to a legal claim brought by Sarah de Lagarde.

“It is not appropriate to discuss details of our defence while this case is ongoing.

“Our thoughts continue to be with Sarah and her family following this terrible incident, and we will continue to make every possible effort to learn from any incident on the Tube network.

“Safety is our top priority and we will always place it at the forefront of our thinking.”

‘Disappointing decision’ – Munster Rugby suffer early pre-season blow as glamour fixture falls through

MUNSTER Rugby’s pre-season friendly against Biarritz Olympique has been cancelled. The province were set to play the Pro D2 side on Friday 22 August.

However due to a delay to pitch renovations at the Stade Aguilera, Biarritz Olympique are unable to host Munster Rugby for the fixture.

Alternative venues were explored between the Basque club and the 2023 URC winners but “no viable and workable solutions were found.”

The cancellation of the province’s opening pre-season friendly will cause a lot of disruption for the new-look Munster team.

A Munster spokesperson said: “Given the disappointing decision by Biarritz Olympique, Munster Rugby will now make alternative arrangements regarding pre-season preparations.”

New boss Clayton McMillan would have been hoping to have a good pre-season before his first campaign with the Stags.

With new team manager Martyn Vercoe being announced to replace the departing Niall O’Donovan, the almost complete make-over coaching team will want to have plenty of time to work with the squad and have good pre-season fixtures.

The Red Army are still set to face Gloucester Rugby on 5 September and Bath Rugby on 12 September.

That will be a long gap in matches for the side who’s season ended in a heartbreaking penalty shootout against the Sharks on 31 May in South Africa.

It will be a long summer break for many Munster players to dwell on the agony of the URC quarter-final exit.

Tadgh Beirne was Munster’s only selected player for the British and Irish Lions’ Australia Tour this summer and has started the first two tests.

A large Munster contingent were picked by former player Paul O’Connell for the Ireland squad to face Georgia and Portugal.

Seven players for the province will be up for selection for the game in Tbilisi on Saturday with Craig Casey picked as captain.

With a record number of fifteen Ireland stars selected for the Lions, it gave an opportunity for players such as Alex Kendellen to get their first call-ups.

Uncapped players Tom Aherne and Michael Milne will be looking to make their debuts alongside clubmates Jack Crowley, Calvin Nash and Gavin Coombes who have already got a taste of international rugby.

Kate opens up about ‘difficult phase after treatment’ as she meets with hospital patients after dropping out of Ascot

PRINCESS Kate has opened up about the “difficult” phase after treatment ends on a visit to hospital patients and staff.

The visit marks her first public appearance since dropping out of Ascot at the list minute as she “had to find the right balance” on returning to full time duty.

The Princess visited RHS Wellbeing Garden at Colchester Hospital, in Essex, today.

She met with NHS workers and planted some of her ‘Catherine’s Rose’ plants in the recovery garden.

Kate spoke about life after cancer treatment, and told staff: “You know I think there’s a lot of brave faced stoicism through treatment, but then treatment’s done.

“I think the phase afterwards is really difficult, I mean, you know, you’re not necessarily in a clinical team any longer, but you’re not able to function normally at home as you once used to.

“And actually, someone to help talk you through that, show you and guide you through that phase that comes after treatment, I think it’s really valuable to have a space like this here for patients.”

She added: “But it’s life changing for anyone, through first diagnosis or post treatment and things like that, it is life changing experience both for the patient but also for the families as well.

“And actually it sometimes goes unrecognised, you don’t necessarily, particularly when it’s the first time, appreciate how much impact it is going to have.

“You have to find your new normal and that takes time…and it’s a roller coaster it’s not one smooth plain, which you expect it to be.

“But the reality is it’s not, you go through hard times and to have a place like this to have the support network, through creativity and singing or gardening whatever it might be is so valuable and it’s great this community has it, it would be great if lots of communities had this kind of support.”

Kate announced her cancer diagnosis in March 2024 after abdominal surgery at The London Clinic in January that year.

She finished chemotherapy in September and announced she was in remission in January of this year.

The royal’s visit today coincided with donations of 50 ‘Catherine’s Rose’ plants named in honour of Kate.

Funds from sales will go to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

And, the roses will be donated to gardens across the country including cancer hospitals.

This comes after the royal pulled out of a Royal Ascot appearance last month.

Kate was understood to be “disappointed” not to go but “had to find the right balance” on returning to full time duty.

The mother-of-three had sadly dropped out to continue her recovery.

Prince William then arrived at day two of the event in a carriage looking deep in thought.

Despite the absence of his wife, William put on a brave face and was seen smiling and chatting with other royals as the day went on.

The palace insisted there has always been flexibility around Kate’s engagements more than a year after her cancer announcement.

She had already attended Trooping the Colour and Order of the Garter in days prior to Royal Ascot plus a visit to V&A East Storehouse

Kate missed last year’s event as she stepped back from her royal duties before announcing her cancer diagnosis.

Despite her absence at Ascot, the Princess did subsequently write a personal message to mark the end of Children’s Hospice Week.

The mum-of-three is Royal Patron of East Anglia Children’s Hospices (EACH), and in January this year became the Royal Patron of Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice in South Wales.

In a letter shared in social media she wrote: “No parent expects to hear that their child has a serious health condition that could shorten their life.

“Sadly, this is the reality faced by thousands of families across the country, leaving them heart-broken, fearful of the future and often desperately isolated.

“Being able to access the support of one of the UK’s 54 children’s hospices means they don’t have to face that future alone.

“As Patron of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice in South Wales, I have the immense privilege of seeing for myself the extraordinary work of our children’s hospices.

“Lifting spirits through laughter, fun and play, as well as listening, holding, caring and sharing, they support children and families through life, death and beyond.

“This Children’s Hospice Week, I hope you will join me in celebrating the life-changing work they do and thanking them for the vital care they provide to children and families experiencing the most challenging times.”

Kate’s appearance today comes as King Charles and Queen Camilla are set to carry out a number of engagements as Royal Week continues in Scotland.

The royals will kick off engagements today in Kirkcaldy, Fife, including marking the centenary of the town’s war memorial, and unveiling a commemoration cairn.

Queen Camilla will then travel to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, where she will host a reception for the Queen’s Nursing Institute of Scotland.

The charity provides professional development opportunities for Scotland’s community nurses and midwives.

It was founded in 1899 with a donation from Queen Victoria to organise the training of district nurses.

It also supports them in working collaboratively with those they care for to tackle health inequalities.

The King traditionally spends a week based at the Palace of Holyroodhouse each year in what is known as Holyrood Week or Royal Week in Scotland.

Yesterday, the King started his official visit with the traditional Ceremony of the Keys in the palace gardens.

He then presided over an investiture ceremony for honours recipients.

Later in the day the King and Queen hosted guests at a garden party at the palace, alongside the Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence.

Dressed in a grey tracksuit, he stood in the dock and nodded when asked if he understood the charges.

A PSNI detective chief inspector told the court he could connect Hughes to the offences.

No facts of the case were laid out and there was no application for bail.

The date of the offences given on court papers was June 27.

District Judge Conor Heaney remanded Hughes in custody until July 30.

Ms Montgomery, 27, died at her home in Donaghadee.

Floral tributes have been left outside her house in Elmfield Walk.

A 42-year-old woman, who was arrested in Belfast on suspicion of assisting an offender, was released unconditionally on Tuesday.

The death of Ms Montgomery has led to renewed focus on the rate of violence against women and girls in Northern Ireland.

She was the 27th adult woman to be killed in Northern Ireland since 2020.

TRIBUTES PAID

Dozens of tributes have been paid to Ms Montgomery since her death.

Donaghadee Primary School described their former pupil as “the most supportive and loving mum to her two wonderful daughters”.

The school said she was “a much-loved past pupil” and offered its “heartfelt thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences to Sarah’s family at this very sad time”.

A number of MLAs at Stormont also expressed their condolences.

UNIMAGINABLE TRAGEDY

Answering questions at the Northern Ireland Assembly, Northern Ireland, First Minister Michelle O’Neill has said: “I can’t even imagine what her family are going through.

“A young mummy expecting her next child, her whole life ahead of her and taken from her family in the most devastating way.

“Sarah Montgomery had her whole life ahead of her, a beautiful woman, two children and one on the way.

“That tragedy is just unimaginable for so many people.
