Iconic British Olympian in talks to join Strictly Come Dancing as BBC bid to clean up scandal-hit show

OLYMPICS running legend Sir Mo Farah is in talks to appear on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Its reputation was dented when actress Amanda Abbington accused her professional partner Giovanni Pernice of bullying in 2023

Team GB hero Sir Mo, 42, however, is seen by BBC bosses as a “genuine national treasure” whose squeaky-clean image and profile would be popular with viewers and rebuild trust.

A source said: “His personality would provide the perfect tonic to the toxicity that’s overshadowed Strictly.

“Bosses would love to sign him up but the talks are at a very early stage.”

Sir Mo won 5,000 and 10,000m golds at the London and Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2012 and 2016.

He came fifth in I’m A Celebrity in 2020 when it filmed in Wales because of Covid.

Earlier this year he was unveiled as Giant Joel on The Masked Singer.

Asked if he would consider Strictly, Somalia-born Sir Mo replied: “Hopefully, when the time is right,” before joking he had “two left feet”.

The long-distance runner would not say if he had been approached.

A BBC spokeswoman declined to comment.

The line-up also features former footballer Shaun Wright-Phillips[/caption]

Among the celebrities taking part in the next series are Love Island legend Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, US reality star Jack Osbourne and ex-footballer Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Also entering the kitchen are actress Natalie Cassidy, actor and comedian Hugh Dennis and presenter Jordan North.

Former Towie star Jessica Wright and author/interiors expert Kelly Hoppen round out the line-up.

The all-star cast will each be tasked with creating delicious dishes to be judged by the professionals.

At the end of every episode, the bottom two celebs will fight for their spot – by cooking a dish without their mentor’s guidance.

The elimination is decided by blind testing – meaning a mentor could unknowingly vote their own protégé out.

Series four ended with Paralympian and Strictly star Ellie Simmonds crowned as the winner – but who will join her?

Emma Willis said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be back in the kitchen for another series of Cooking With The Stars.

“Every year our celebrities throw themselves into it, and this new line-up is no exception.

“It’s always a mix of nerves, excitement, and a few inevitable kitchen catastrophes which makes for brilliant tele.

“I can’t wait for everyone to see what culinary delights (and disasters!) our new batch of stars cook up!”

Tom Allen said: “The sheer nerve of these celebrities to step into our kitchen and attempt culinary greatness (or just, you know, edible food) is truly something to behold!

“I am absolutely delighted to once again join Emma to unleash another season of dazzling triumphs and utterly baffling disasters.

“Get ready for a delicious, slightly burnt and completely fabulous ride – that golden frying pan is waiting.”

Katie Rawcliffe, Director of Entertainment and Daytime Commissioning ITV, added: “We are delighted to bring ‘Cooking With The Stars’ back for another series.

“The partnership with M&S continues to be a recipe for success, and this year viewers can expect even more surprising culinary transformations and laugh-out-loud moments as a fresh set of celebrities step into the kitchen to show what they can bring to the table.”

Melanie Leach, Chief Executive Officer at South Shore, commented: “We’re delighted to welcome this year’s celebrity chefs to the show and look forward to watching them battle it out to become our Cooking With the Stars 2025 champion.”

Cooking With The Stars airs on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.

The junction leads from Newry to Dundalk in Co Louth.

Several videos have been widely shared across social media of cars driving past the truck as the fire raged on.

Huge flames rose from the lorry as thick black smoke billowed into the air.

However, the road was later closed as emergency services attended the scene.

Local resident Sean Magennis caught footage of emergency services at the scene of the blaze from a bridge above the busy dual carriageway.

And a local community page, Killean Edentubber Regeneration, shared the video to Facebook and warned road users of the raging fire.

They said: “Thanks to one of our residents Sean Magennis for the video taken from the bridge just before Junction 20 this evening

“A lorry has caught fire on the dual carriageway leading from Newry to Dundalk. Road currently closed.”

Emergency services can be seen attempting to control the blaze in the footage.

It is understood no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

The scene has now been cleared and the road reopened.

Locals even revealed they had noticed the blaze from their homes.

Commenting on the shocking footage one resident wrote: “We heard it from the house, dog was barking, we were wondering what it was.”

SUNNY WEATHER ALERT

Separately, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) are warning road users to take extra caution during the sunny weather.

It comes as Met Eireann have promised temperatures will reach at least 23C over the coming days.

Posting on social media TII warned Irish motorists to watch out for sun glare.

They said: “Sun glare can be a real hazard for drivers!

“Reduce the risk by wearing sunglasses and keeping
your windscreen clean.”

The ‘correct’ portion size of chips has been revealed & people have been left utterly baffled by it

THE ‘correct’ portion size of chips has been revealed – and it’s safe to say people are utterly baffled by it.

Chips are a staple of British comfort food, whether they’re paired with fish on a Friday night, piled high next to a juicy burger, or enjoyed straight out of a takeaway box.

According to nutritionists, the recommended serving size of chips is shockingly small[/caption]

But now, the suggested ‘right’ portion size has been revealed, leaving people questioning everything they thought they knew about their favourite treat.

According to nutritionists, the recommended serving size is shockingly small – just 10 chips.

Social media users were quick to react to the revelation after TikTok user @chellep78 posted a video explaining that she eats that amount while deciding whether she even wants chips.

“I eat 10 chips while I’m plating up,” one person commented, while another joked, “Mate, I shove 10 chips in my gob all at once.”

For comparison, McCain recommends a serving size of 110g for its Straight Home Chips, while Birds Eye suggests 125g for its Crispy Straight Cut Chips.

As @chellep78 points out, this equates to around 10 chips per serving.

However, a single serving of oven chips already exceeds the quantity suggested by a Harvard scientist, who believes a portion should be even smaller – just six chips.

Speaking to the New York Times, Professor Eric Rimm, a nutritionist at Harvard University, explained: “There aren’t a lot of people who are sending back three-quarters of an order of French fries.

“I think it would be nice if your meal came with a side salad and six French fries.”

For most Brits, chips are a food of indulgence, not restraint.

Whether they’re thick-cut, skinny fries, or drenched in salt and vinegar, it’s hard to imagine stopping at six – or even ten – chips.

More people joined in on the debate on TikTok, sharing their thoughts on the surprisingly small portion size.

One wrote: “I eat at least ten while I’m debating what I’m going to have with what I now know is 4x more chips than I should have had.”

Another added: “I’m already snacking on potato wedges, French fries, seasoned fries, curly fries, and skin-on fries while I’m waiting for my regular chips to cook.”

A TikTok user was shocked after hearing the ‘correct’ amount of chips people should have on their plate[/caption]

And a third said: “I don’t think I’d bother at all if I had to restrict my portion to 10 chips. I’m an all-or-nothing sorta girl.”

So, while the ‘correct’ portion size might technically be six – or ten – it seems most people are sticking to their own rules when it comes to enjoying this beloved snack.

Let’s face it – who can really stop at just six chips?

What food do you need for a healthy diet?

IF you want to have good health, a good way to start is from your diet.

The Eatwell Guide shows that to have a healthy, balanced diet, people should try to:

  • eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day
  • base meals on higher fibre starchy foods like potatoes, bread, rice or pasta
  • have some dairy or dairy alternatives (such as soya drinks)
  • eat some beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat and other protein
  • choose unsaturated oils and spreads, and eat them in small amounts
  • drink plenty of fluids (at least 6 to 8 glasses a day)

Greenwood, 23, had a prolific debut season for the club following his £26.6million transfer last summer.

The forward netted an impressive 22 goals and six assists in just 36 appearances in all competitions.

But he is now keeping on top of his fitness back in Manchester.

Greenwood was pictured going through the motions and was joined by former United team-mate D’Mani Mellor.

Like Greenwood, Mellor, 24, came through the academy with the Red Devils.

However, he never made a Premier League appearance for the club but did appear in a Europa League match against Astana in 2019.

Astana came out 2-1 winners with Jesse Lingard scoring for Man United.

Mellor shared the pitch with Greenwood as he replaced Tahith Chong in the 65th minute.

He is now playing for Macclesfield FC under the guidance of former Premier League star Robbie Savage.

Meanwhile, after just one season in France, Greenwood — who had charges of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour dropped in February 2023 — is yearning for a return to the UK with partner Harriet Robson and their two young daughters.

Reports have claimed that the striker has interest from at least two unnamed Premier League clubs.

Serie A or LaLiga could also be the next destination should he leave Marseille, while the Saudi Pro League may be an option, too, if one of the leading clubs can create a space in the squad.

Greenwood spent the 2023-24 season on loan in Spain with Getafe, scoring ten goals in 36 games.

Organ donation offers 2nd chance to those with life-threatening illnesses or injuries – everything to know about new law

EVERY person over the age of 18 in Ireland is now considered an organ donor under landmark legislation, which was introduced today.

The Human Tissue Act 2024 Part 2 will see each adult offering to donate their heart, liver, lungs, kidneys and pancreas on their death to patients desperately in need, unless they specifically choose to opt out.

These steps enable physiotherapists working in relevant roles across the health service to refer patients for diagnostic investigations such as X-rays. 200 physiotherapists will have completed the training in University College Dublin (UCD) by the end of 2025. The development of this training programme is funded by the Department of Health through the Sláintecare Integration Innovation Fund (SIIF). 1IMAGE PHOTOGRAPHY Studio: +353 1 493 9947 Mob: +353 87 246 9221 (Bryan) 1image.ie Copyright: 1IMAGE Photography/Bryan Brophy© All Rights Reserved
Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill said ‘consent is the cornerstone of this new law’
1IMAGE Photography/Bryan Brophy

The Act also provides a framework for living donations, allowing people who wish to donate a kidney to one of the approximately 600 people on waiting lists around the country.

In Ireland, comedian Jarlath Regan donated a kidney to his brother in 2017, while former Derry GAA star and pundit Joe Brolly gave a kidney to his friend in 2012.

Celebrity chef Derry Clarke and his wife Sallyanne also donated their son Andrew’s organs after he passed away in 2016 at the age of 16.

Speaking about the new Act, Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill said: “Consent is the cornerstone of this new law. In commencing Part 2 of this Act, we are hoping to increase the donor pool in Ireland by making organ donation the norm, while always fully respecting the wishes of individuals and their families.”

Here, Michael Doyle looks at how the new legislation will work and what it will mean for every adult in the country.

THE donation of an organ is an incredible gift that is life-changing for the recipient and their families.

Under this new legislation, all adults in Ireland will be considered to have agreed to be an organ donor when they die, unless they have recorded a decision not to donate on the National Organ Donation Opt-Out Register or are in one of the excluded groups.

This is commonly referred to as a soft opt-out organ donation system.

If you are 18 or over, you will be considered to have agreed to be an organ donor when you die, unless you opt out or are in one of the excluded groups.

The excluded groups include people who do not normally live in Ireland or who have lived here for less than a year and people who may not have had the capacity to decide to opt out of organ donation before they died.

This change only applies to organs referred to as relevant organs under the legislation: liver, lung, pancreas, heart or kidney. For all other organs, tissues, or cells, consent will be sought from your family member – as was previously the case.

If you want to be an organ donor, you do not need to take any action.
Consent for organ donation will be presumed unless you have registered your wish not to be an organ donor.

If you do not want to be an organ donor, you can apply to the Relevant Organ Donation Opt-Out Register maintained by the HSE.

If you are on this register, your family will not be asked about organ donation.

Medical criteria and other conditions must still be met to allow donation.

A potential donor has to be in a hospital and maintained on a life support machine before they can become an organ donor.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

At any given time, approximately 600 people in Ireland are on waiting lists for organ transplants.

Organ donation can save or improve lives and every year, hundreds of people in Ireland have their lives transformed by organ donation.

Adopting an opt-out system of consent for organ donation will bring Ireland in line with international best practice and aims to transform lives by increasing the donor pool in Ireland.

Let your family know your wishes regarding organ donation so they can honour your decision.

Opt-Out: If you do not wish to be an organ donor, you can opt out – see www.hse.ie/organdonation or contact HSE Live on 1800 700 700.

WHAT IS A DESIGNATED FAMILY MEMBER?

The Act sets out who will be considered a “designated family member” – the person who will be consulted regarding consent or confirmation that a deceased person does not object to a donation.

It allows for consent or confirmation of no objection to be obtained from the family member who has been the main point of contact for clinicians in their treatment of the deceased.

NON-DIRECTED ALTRUISTIC DONATION – WHAT IS IT?

This is a new pathway for living donation being introduced by the Human Tissue Act.

A living person who donates an organ to someone they do not know is called a non-directed altruistic donor.

They are donating an organ to someone on a waiting list who needs it.

The Act provides for non-directed altruistic donations by adults only with additional protections and safeguards in place for those wishing to donate.

An Independent Panel will be established which will consider, among other types of donations, applications for non-directed altruistic donations.

Dr Colm Henry, CCO of the HSE said: “The opt-out organ donation system will bring us in line with international best practice. Organ transplantation is one of the great advances in modern medicine.

“It offers a second chance at life to people with life-threatening illnesses or injuries to their vital organs.

“Every year, more than 200 people in Ireland have their lives improved or saved by the gift of organ donation.”
