Inside abandoned Disney World airport with its own singing runway where planes are banned from landing

AN ABANDONED Disney World airport once welcomed visitors into the heart of the Magic Kingdom with a musical runway – but planes are now banned from the area.

Lake Buena Vista STOLPort was constructed in the early 1970s – with a runway which played When You Wish Upon a Star if pilots drove over it at the right pace.

Hidden just off the road into Disney World, the stretch of tarmac literally sang when jets went over it at around 45mph.

The small airport was made in 1971 to fly in Disney World guests and employees from Orlando International Airport and Tampa International Airport, on a journey that lasted just a few minutes, according to Culture Trip.

For a short time, it was the only runway where you could fly directly into Disney’s world-famous theme park.

The only jets to ever fly into the incredible airport were part of a now-defunct airline called Shawnee.

The airport, which rests south of the Magic Kingdom park and north of Epcot, next to World Drive, was only big enough to operate four planes at a time.

The runway was also reportedly used for high-ranking Disney company executives until as late as 2006.

The concept was that the small airport would later be revamped into a much larger airport – but this idea never took off, and the fairytale flight service didn’t last long before it was scrapped.

Lake Buena Vista STOLport was ultimately closed in the 1980s after the theme park built a Monorail close to the runway.

This meant planes were no longer able to land there safely.

Ever since, the one-of-a-kind airport has been used as backstage storage.

Bus drivers were even reportedly trained on the tarmac, where they revealed the bizarre musical feature of the singing airstrip.

Tragically, the musical grooves were removed in 2008 – though the airport still stands.

There is actually another bizarre reason no planes are allowed to land there today.

And it is because Disney World actually has the same airspace protections as the White House.

The park has a special “no-fly zone” called TFR 9/4985, which it was given shortly after 9/11.

This means no planes can fly low or land over attractions such as Cinderella’s castle – much to the annoyance of Florida pilots.

Disney has even tried to bend the rule too.

They recently applying for permission to fly their own drones in the zone.

Planes aren’t the only things that no longer exist at Disney World – mosquitoes have also been banned.

Disney has a comprehensive programme for keeping the park mozzie-free, which is called the Mosquito Surveillance Programme.

But while the airspace is locked down tight, the legend of Disney’s once musical runway still lives on.

Married deputy head teacher, 51, ‘had sex with schoolgirl in car & at home while dad was away’

A MARRIED deputy head teacher allegedly had sex with a schoolgirl in his car and at her home while her dad was away.

Former assistant head and English teacher John Harvey is accused of having sex with the girl several times.

The 51-year-old, who worked at Penryn College in Cornwall, denies the charges.

When he was arrested and interviewed by cops, he said it was all “a figment of her imagination”, CornwallLive reported.

Prosecutor Nigel Wraith said the pair had sex outside school, in his car and even at her home when her dad had been away.

Truro Crown Court was told that the teenager had been in love with her teacher but he told her to keep the relationship secret.

This was because he was a married man with children and he could lose his job and could go to prison.

The prosecutor told the jury that the relationship, which included two pregnancy scares, continued after she left school.

It wasn’t reported to the police until her friends became concerned.

Truro Crown Court was told that there is no question of sexual assault or rape.

Harvey is facing two counts of inappropriate sexual behaviour with a 16-year-old girl while being in a position of trust and abusing that trust.

The alleged behaviour are said to have occurred several years ago.

While the age of consent is 16, this rises to 18 when someone holds a position of trust.

This is in order to protect pupils at school from potential inappropriate relationships with teachers.

I stayed in the VERY affordable Eastern European town King Charles is obsessed with – it cost just £60 a night

IT’S not the Count that counts in Transylvania. The King’s the thing. Our king.

I first heard of Transylvania, as many do, via Count Dracula. The place is so mythical that it hovers above the map, somewhere between fact and fiction, but it does really exist – in modern day Romania

Affordable Eastern European lodging.

This (entirely vampire-free) land is a mosaic of sleepy traditional villages wreathed in mountains and forest.

It’s a storybook place of haymaking with scythes, of horse-and-cart transport, of bears in the woods, and of homemade plum brandy strong enough to blow your socks off.

While the rest of Europe is struggling with more concrete and more speed, Transylvania is still cloaked in a meditative serenity. It is not a place for motorways or spa hotels, so the inner peace is deafening.

For King Charles, highly attuned to everything organic, this harmonious balance between man and nature is a spa for the soul.

He first came here in 1998, and was so entranced that he invested in property and agreed to become the patron of the Mihai Eminescu Trust (MET), which was formed to try to preserve its village houses.

Since then he has returned over 20 times, and Transylvania was his first overseas trip after becoming king. His interest has made Romanians themselves start to treasure their rural areas.

His presence has transformed one village in particular, and I was there last week. It’s a settlement called Viscri, originally of mostly Saxon (German-speaking) people who first arrived here way back in the 12th century.

Many of Viscri’s pastel-painted houses carry the MET motif, and I booked one of them, via the MET’s rental business, Experience Transylvania.

Number 129 turned out to be a simple property that sleeps four, with bare wooden floors, decoratively painted furniture, handwoven blankets, and wood burning stoves, for £58 a night.

Out back is an orchard with cattleshed and haybarn, enough for the original family to be self-sufficient.

Just down the road, my neighbour HRH’s house is at number 163. It’s the same layout as mine (and all the others in the village) but immaculately renovated.

When he first bought it, the then Prince would overnight here, but Viscri has simply become too busy these days.

That’s partly because of the Unesco-designation of its magnificent fortified church, one of half a dozen in these Saxon villages, but mostly because of him.

So he opened the house up to the public instead, using it to explain his connection to Transylvania and showcasing its wonderfully diverse flora.

Meanwhile the village itself has had an extraordinary turnaround. The taxi driver who brought me here described it as ‘the most famous village in Transylvania’. Because of him.

When I meet Caroline Fernolend, president of the MET, who lives in Viscri, she agrees that “his contribution has been enormous. Romanians didn’t appreciate this kind of rural tourism before him.”

Two very memorable guest experiences in an unexpected corner of Europe

At the end of the Communist era, country villages were depopulated and dilapidated.

Today, the young families are back in Viscri, there are no fewer than seven restaurants, and Charles has even funded its (highly ecological) sewage system. “When he visits, he always asks, ‘what can I do to help?’” says Caroline.

Tourists like me are here in increasing numbers, too, but there are still horses and carts, the family cows still bring themselves back from the meadows in the evening.

There are storks’ nests on chimneystacks, the main street is unpaved and there’s a magnificent view from the church tower across the rooftops to the bear-rich woodlands.

Viscri doesn’t feel overrun, but these days Charles prefers to stay in his other property, in a Hungarian origin village called Zalanpatak, about 50 miles east.

‘Old school hospitality’

This village is not nearly as handsome as Viscri, and it doesn’t have any magnificent churches, but it is hidden up a secluded green valley so I can see why he likes it.

His property here has been converted from a traditional farmstead, and when Charles isn’t in residence, its seven bedrooms operate as an upmarket guest house, with handpainted and antique Transylvanian furniture.

There’s a lofty dining room where everyone sits down together over a set dinner of uncompromisingly traditional food.

It’s sociable and companiable, and the day I was there, most of the other guests were well-educated city-dwelling Romanians, motivated partly by curiosity.

And if you’re lucky, as I was, Charles’ friend and fixer in Romania, Count Tibor Kalnoky, will be there too, as host. In the absence of HRH himself, the Count brings a touch of gracious, old school hospitality to the table.

So there you have it. Two very memorable guest experiences in an unexpected corner of Europe.

And in an era where holiday homes are increasingly accused of destroying local communities, it’s a pleasure to discover that one particular holiday home owner has had quite the opposite effect.

The country musician said: “I’m gonna be saying a little goodbye to you today, just a tiny little goodbye, just maybe for a couple of months.

“I just need to take a small little social media break. I’ve been posting videos pretty much every day for the last two and a half years, and it’s been my great f***ing pleasure to do so.”

The Mayo native is focusing on his upcoming gig as well as “ideas” he wants to work on.

Garron explained the “pressure” he’s been putting on himself to “try and feel worthy” of the amount of people who watches him.

He said: “I think I just need to get me head out of the game for a little while, and I’ll come back nice and fresh with me lovely new ideas, and we’ll have a great craic together.”

The influencer shared how grateful he is to his fan base saying: “I want to thank you from the absolute bottom of my soul for everything you’ve given me over the last few years.

“All of the opportunities, all of the people I’ve got to meet, everything good has come from you, and I really f***ing appreciate it, and you’ll never understand how much I do. But thank you.”

And the singer has left his fans with a generous “parting gift”.

He explained: “A lot of the money that I make from social media and stuff, I like to put it in a little pot and give it to charity, and I don’t believe that money is coming from me, it’s coming from you, the people that watch.

“So thank you so much for that. It’s been able to help with animals and homelessness and all sorts of important things. And today I want to make a €10,000 donation on behalf of you good, delicious people to Doctors Without Borders.

“There’s a lot going on in the world at the moment. I know you’re hearing about that everywhere. You probably don’t want to hear about it from me, but they do excellent humanitarian work, and I just think it’s a great charity to give to. So thank you very much for that.

“I’ve been in contact with them to make the donation, and as soon as they receive the money, I’ll put up confirmation of that on my Instagram story.”

He finished off his farewell statement saying: “Thank you so much for that, and thank you so much for everything. Until I see you again, and if I don’t see you again, it’s been a pleasure having you. Maybe you won’t catch me when I come back.

FAN SUPPORT

“It’s been a pleasure having you. You are delicious. Stay delicious. And until next time, follow me, I’m delicious.”

And while Garron’s fans have been left devastated by the news, they flooded the comment section with support for the star.

Annalie wrote: “Such a delicious thing to do for those charities. Wishing you a restful break.”

Jill commented: “I’ll miss your content Garron, truly. You make me laugh everyday! Enjoy your break… well deserved. The donations to charity make me love you even more. Cheers!!”

April said: “The charitable donations are so kind hearted. You’ll be missed Garron. Have a wonderful summer!”

Shannon added: “Gonna miss you and remember you are loved.
Stay delicious.”

Lando Norris ‘girlfriend’ posts cryptic picture at same time as F1: The Movie premiere as F1 star left flying solo

After qualifying a dismal P7 on Saturday, he crashed out of the race following a “stupid” overtaking attempt on team-mate Oscar Piastri, seeing him drop to 22 points behind his championship rival.

However, the Brit had a chance to separate fact from fiction as he attended the F1 movie premiere alongside his fellow drivers.

The 25-year-old put on a brave face as he took to the red carpet on Monday wearing a sharp blue suit and trousers alongside a white collared shirt and trainers.

But while many of his rivals turned up with their respective other halves – with Sauber’s tag team duo of Nico Hulkenberg and wife Egle stealing the showNorris was notably a one-man show.

Norris has been in an on-off relationship with model and actress Margarida Corceiro.

The 22-year-old was first seen with the racer in 2023 following her break-up with Chelsea‘s Joao Felix and she has since been seen in attendance at a couple of F1 races since.

This included the Monaco Grand Prix in May, when she was spotted by cameras as their romance went “official” as Norris secured pole position before converting that into a win.

Margarida was absent from the paddock in Montreal and also left Norris solo at the New York film premiere.

During the same time as the glamorous event was taking place, the Portuguese influencer shared stunning pictures behind the scenes of a swimsuit photo shoot at a scenic beach in Italy.

The pictures shared showed her doing a variety of activities, including tucking into some spaghetti while hanging on the end of a boat, tanning in the sun wearing a bikini and showing off a stunning dress on the beach.

Before that she had also posted a snap of the sun setting in the distance.

In New York, Norris was not the F1 star seen flying solo, with seven-time world champion and movie consultant Lewis Hamilton also unaccompanied.

He rubbed shoulders with Hollywood A-lister Brad Pitt and rising South London actor Damson Idris, who stars in the film as Pitt’s younger rival and team-mate.

Hamilton’s Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc was seen with his stunning girlfriend Alexandra Saint Mleux.

The British driver saw his struggles continue as he finished P6 in last Sunday’s race, while he also admitted he was “devastated” after learning he had hit a groundhog during the Grand Prix.

Former team-mate George Russell converted pole into a win to become the fourth different race winner this year.

F1 has a week long break before it returns for the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg on June 29.
