I’m UK’s most desperate bride-to-be – I have planned my wedding, have a £2K dress but there’s one thing missing…a groom

TAKING a sip of prosecco Theresa Mahon listens intently as her date chats about his love of football and music.

As with all first dates Ads, 30, has plenty of questions for Theresa too, including the inevitable ‘tell me a fun fact about yourself.’

When she met toyboy partner Ads, 15 years her junior, he wasn’t deterred by her organisation[/caption]

Theresa, 45, takes a deep breath and prepares to share the secret that sends most men running for the hills.

“I told my new man he was my first date in 13 years,” she says.

“I then dropped a bigger bombshell.

“I had already planned our wedding including everything from the castle venue, the purple colour scheme and his suit.

“I’ve even spent £2k on the dress and tiara.”

Sitting in silence, Theresa waited for her date to make his excuses, but she was in for a surprise.

“Despite being 15 years younger than me, my toyboy admirer didn’t exit stage left,” she says.

“He looked a little shocked but took it all in his stride.

“He did splutter a bit when I also revealed I’d already bought my wedding lingerie, but I was more shocked than he was.

“I’d met a man who appreciates that I’m not crazy, I’m just well organised.”

Events supervisor Theresa, 45, lives in Dublin, Ireland lives with her three sons aged 24, 18 and 14 and admits she’s been planning her big day ever since she was a teenager.

“I don’t think it weird to have planned my wedding without a man,” she says.

“It is a big job, so being prepared and planning everything down to the wedding dance and reception menu is just plain sensible.”

Despite having planned her entire wedding day, until nine months ago Theresa was single — and had not dated for 13 years.

But seven years ago Theresa decided to take the plunge – not to accept a wedding proposal or a date –  but to buy her dream wedding gown.

Theresa says: “I’ve been trying on wedding dresses since I was 19.

“For me, a day out shopping was never complete without visiting a bridal shop and trying on the latest dresses.

“Standing on the pedestal with a shop assistant helping me into the latest on trend wedding dress was an amazing high that was better than sex.”

In 2019 Theresa was out shopping and spotted her dream dress.

“It was a strapless dress with a crystal bodice and a huge skirt, like Cinderella.,” she says.

“When I put it on and twirled, I knew it was ‘the dress’… I loved the feel of fabric and how special it made me feel.

“I told the assistant I didn’t yet have a groom, she was shocked but I was not ashamed.”

Theresa paid £1,000 for her dream dress and another £120 on a veil. To complete the look, In January 2019 she ordered crystal-encrusted shoes from America for £250.

Since then, she’s bought wedding lingerie and a special wedding bag taking her total spend to £2000.

“I’ve been saving for my wedding for a year and used credit cards to pay for the dress, so I was £700 in debt but have now paid that off,” she says.

“Every time I open my wardrobe and see the white dress I’ll get married in, I get a flash of excitement,” she says.

“I’m convinced it won’t be long till I will be walking down the aisle.”

Growing up Thersa admits as a child she loved to dress up in big white bedsheets and pretend she was Cinderella.

At school, Theresa had boyfriends, then when she began work at her local Tesco aged 19 she fell in love for the first time.

She says: “I met Greg* and we fell for each other.

“We had been dating for a year when I was pregnant. I thought Greg would then propose — but instead he left me.”

I became ‘married to the plan’ not married to the man until I could find a fella who understood me

Theresa Mahon

Theresa brought up their son now 24, as a single mum, crushed that her dream of becoming a bride hadN’T been realised.

When she was 22, she then began dating Tom*, 38. The couple went on to have two boys, aged 18 and 14.

She says: “He knew I wanted a big wedding; I talked about it non-stop, but he didn’t want to rush into it.

“It caused arguments, and we ended up breaking up after six years in  December 2010.”

Since then, Theresa admits she’s been trying to find a real man, mature enough to settle down.

She says: “I was so angry with my past two men for leaving me, I decided I wasn’t going to wait any more and I would just go ahead and plan my wedding.”

“I became ‘married to the plan’ not married to the man until I could find a fella who understood me and wasn’t scared of commitment.”

While Theresa’s approach might seem unusual she is not alone.

A Interflora survey found six in ten  or 60% single women have already planned aspects of their wedding – including choosing the dress they will wear and the flowers they will carry on their big day.

The study found millions of women – who are still looking for Mr Right – have researched elements such as churches, flowers, reception venues, bridesmaid’s dresses and the car which will take them to the church.

The rise of social media has only encouraged the trend of single women being married to the plan.

According to Mashable and TheKnot.com, a whopping 70 percent of Pinterest users admitted to having pinned wedding-related content before they’re even engaged—or necessarily dating someone.

Wedding site Zola includes a section specifically for people not yet proposed to so they can start  browsing and creating plans without being engaged.

Other sites like TheKnot.com have a special “Not engaged yet” forum.

Theresa says: “I know I am addicted to weddings, but I know other women secretly share my obsession.

“I have Pinterest boards but for me scrapbooks offer a real keepsake of my love of weddings and commitment to my big day.

“I started small, filling scrapbooks with fabric swatches, dress designs and sample menus. I upgraded to a spreadsheet to record lists and budgets.

“I couldn’t stop. I sometimes spend up to four hours a day doing various things for my wedding day.”

It isn’t just the dress that Theresa has settled on, but the venue too.

“I knew I needed to know my venue. I spent hours scouring the internet for venues that looked like Cinderella’s castle,” she says.

“That’s when I found Lough Eske Castle, near Donegal. I booked a tour in May 2016 and fell in love with it.

Wedding Guest Outfit Etiquette

If you're struggling to decided on a dress to see you through wedding season, here's a few rules on what not to wear so you don't get in trouble.

  • Folklore says that wearing red at a wedding means you slept with the groom.
  • Casual attire like jeans and flip flops should always be avoided.
  • Any colour that could be picked up as white or cream – even if it’s not.
  • Most would agree that your cleavage needs to be covered.
  • Wearing white is a massive no-no if you’re not the bride.

“I have chosen the wedding package I want and even had meetings with the castle’s staff about my plans. I go there every few months.

“Then I started viewing glass carriages for transport and found a horse-drawn one I’m going to book.”

Theresa’s wedding colours are white-and-purple theme, and she has started shopping for bridesmaids’ dresses.

“I found one I loved, so I bought one and took it to a seamstress who is going to make more of them when I set a date,” she says.

“I’ve planned white tulips, and carnations with a single pink rose in the centre for the bouquets and have bought lots of purple ribbon to tie around the chairs.”

The mum of three also has a menu planned and says its top notch.

“It includes carrot and coriander soup to start, turkey and roasted veg for the main course and profiteroles for dessert,” she says.

Extreme planner Theres has picked out the first song -A Thousand Years, the lullaby by Christina Perri which features in Twilight.

“And yes, I have planned the honeymoon – it will be in Disneyland,” admits the Cinderella obsessed bride.

“I will always listen to my grooms input. He will get a chance to change something as long as he makes a good argument for it.”

The budget so far is £25,000  but with the cost of living Theresa admits it will have to go up.

She also  hopes her eventual groom will contribute towards the total.

Theresa has even got her wedding party on board.

I won’t tempt fate, but he may be a keeper

Theresa Mahon

In 2016 Theresea picked her three bridesmaids, all good friends, so they could help her plan.

“At first, they were shocked, thinking I’d found a secret fiance, but when I said I didn’t have one they just rolled their eyes but agreed,” Theresa says.

Theresa’s mum and dad were not convinced, however.

“My parents are less supportive,” she admits.

“They worry I’ll miss a potential husband because I’m too busy planning a wedding. They think I’ll scare men off.”

However, a year ago, Theresa’s ‘dating intuition’ paid off when Ads, 30  who she met at an events conference, asked her out.

“I’m 45 and he’s 15 years younger than me. He became a great friend, and we’d always have a laugh,” she says.

“Then in October last year he asked me out for a coffee at a local cafe.

“After 13 years of not dating it was terrifying. I thought I’d come off as a cougar.

“But we clicked and have been dating ever since. He’s even talking about taking me to meet his parents overseas.

“He didn’t laugh at my extreme wedding planning, his take is refreshing, and I won’t tempt fate, but he may be a keeper.”

At least 267 games will be televised across the upcoming season[/caption]

With a record number of at least 267 games due to be televised this season, with 215 – or 80 per cent – being covered by Sky Sports, the curtain raiser has been pencilled in for 8pm on Friday, August 15.

And that is only the first out of a cracking round of matches.

The early kick-off on Saturday has a tasty offering of Aston Villa against Newcastle.

That will be broadcast live on TNT Sports, in what could be an early six-pointer in the race for the Champions League places.

There are four games under the 3pm blackout: Brighton v Fulham, Nottingham Forest v Brentford, Sunderland v West Ham and Tottenham v Burnley.

Sky Sports then pick up broadcasting duties again as Wolves host Manchester City at 5:30pm.

Pep Guardiola’s side could be playing that game just over a month after their involvement in the Club World Cup if they reach the July 15 final.

As Sunday rolls around, fans are in for a real Super Sunday treat with two potential clashes.

The 2pm showing will see Chelsea host FA Cup winners Crystal Palace, starting a run of FOUR London derbies for Enzo Maresca’s Blues.

But the real headline act of the weekend comes in the 4:30pm kick-off, with a heavyweight bout at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Arsenal.

According to Opta Analyst, the Red Devils and Gunners have the toughest set of opening fixtures out of any teams.

Man Utd’s opening five sees them take on Fulham and Burnley before a Manchester derby at the Etihad and hosting Chelsea, which gives them a rating of 94.6 in Opta’s Team Rating equation.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s run of Leeds at home, Liverpool away and Nottingham Forest and Man City at home, gives them a ranking of 94.

The first weekend of the season rounds out with an 8pm Monday match up between newly-promoted Leeds and Everton.

Premier League opening fixtures, August 15-18.

EVs ‘more likely to break down and leave drivers stranded than petrol or diesel cars,’ damning report reveals

ELECTRIC vehicles are reported to be more likely to breakdown on the road than cars with petrol or diesel engines, according to research.

A survey of nearly 30,000 drivers looked into their experiences with breakdowns over the past two years.

The survey found 16.8 per cent of battery car drivers experienced a break down recently[/caption]

This compares to 10.7 per cent of petrol car owners who reported a break down.[/caption]

The Reliability Survey conducted by What Car? in association with MotorEasy looked at a comparison of petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric cars in terms of whether they were likely to break down, as well as be fixed or towed.

Overall, 11% of respondents of the survey had suffered a fault in the last 24 months that made it undriveable.

A similar figure of 10.7 per cent of petrol car owners reported a break down in this time, which is a significantly lower rate than batter car owners.

Hybrid and diesel cars were also at a lower rate, at 14.1 per cent and 15.4 per cent respectively.

Results of the survey come just days after the boss of AA reported attending a higher proportion of electric car breakdowns.

In 40.6 per cent of these break downs, the EVs had to be towed from the roadside to a garage.

However, only 29.6 per cent per cent of petrol cars required this.

CEO of the breakdown service provider, Jakob Pfaudler, added EVs are prone to not only punctures, flat batteries, but also jammed charging cables and technical glitches.

He claimed EV breakdowns are more common despite the “idea “common misconception” that they are more reliable than internal combustion engine cars due to having fewer moving parts.

On top of that, the report found there was only a one in four chance EV drivers would have their cars permanently fixed by a breakdown company after being stranded on the road.

This is in comparison to two in five petrol car owners who were able to get back on the road after calling out roadside assistance.

As a result, EVs were the most commonly transported vehicles taken to garages for repairs, as they cannot be towed.

They are unable to be towed due rotation of their driven wheels risking of damage to their e-motors.

Edmund King, president of AA, also suggested EV drivers are more likely to be confused and flustered by warning lights in their cars, leading them to call for roadside assistance.

Whereas petrol car drivers often drive to a garage when being given warning alerts.

King estimated, however, that only 86 per cent of traditional cars could be dealt with at the roadside compared to nine in ten battery powered cars which tend to just need a “simple reboot”.

An additional positive for EV drivers from the survey data suggested their breakdown-related faults could typically be resolved for free, more than any other fuel type.

89% of EV faults could be resolved at zero-cost for the driver, according to the survey, with only three per cent paying more than £1,500 for fixes.

Hybrid cars did even better on this front, with 91% being fixed for free, and only two per cent paying over £1,500.

However, 76% of petrol car owners reported having their vehicle repaired at no cost following breakdown, and only two-thirds of diesel car drivers.

And it did not make pretty reading for beaten Europa League finalists United, who finished a pitiful 15th last term.

Amorim will have been hoping for a straightforward start to the season.

But £62.5million signing Matheus Cunha and his new teammates face a trial by fire with an opening day home clash against bridesmaids Arsenal.

Things continue to be tricky for United as they then travel to London to face Fulham.

And following a clash with Burnley, the Red Devils then face back-to-back clashes with Man City and Chelsea.

United are next away at Brentford, where they lost 4-3 last season.

And as the fixtures pile up, they soon face a horror run of Liverpool, Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham.

It’s left fans fearing that Amorim will not make it to Christmas, with United’s poor form last season suggesting they will struggle in almost every game.

Every driver in Britain warned of £5K fine THIS WEEKEND over common mistake – how to avoid penalty

BRITS are being warned that a simple driving mistake could cost them £5,000 over the weekend.

The warning comes as the UK braces for a massive heatwave beginning today.

The Highway Code has determined what is appropriate on our roads, ever since it was first published in 1931.

Rule 97 of the code states that motorists must be adequately prepared for their upcoming drive.

This includes being dressed appropriately.

In the summer months, millions of Brits swap their trainers for flip-flops but this could lead to you getting fined.

Any shoe which could limit your ability to put pressure on the pedals breaks the code and leaves you liable for a hefty fine.

If you are found to be “driving without due care and attention”, you face an on-the-spot £100 fine.

Three points could also be added to your license.

If the matter escalates to court, you could face fines of up to £5000.

Speaking to the Express, John Wilmot, CEO and founder of LeaseLoco said: “It’s easy to overlook how your choice of clothing or footwear can affect your driving, especially in hot weather, but even something as simple as a pair of flip-flops or a long skirt can reduce your control of a vehicle.

“If this leads to an accident or you’re stopped by police, you could face serious consequences.

“So we’re urging all drivers to think practically before getting behind the wheel this spring and summer – your outfit shouldn’t compromise your safety or anyone else’s.”

The news comes after temperatures are set to soar over the week.

The country is bracing for highs of 29C today, with the East of England likely facing the hottest temperatures.

In some areas, meteorologists have forecast highs of 33C and have said the heatwave will continue through to the end of the week.

A heatwave is when temperatures exceed thresholds in a certain area for over three days.

Across the north and west of the UK, this is 25C and in the Home Counties and London it is 28C.

Wearing flip-flops in cars

Wearing flip-flops in the car isn't technically illegal, but it still could lead to you being fined.

Rule 97 of the Highway Code states that you must be adequately prepared to drive.

This includes having enough petrol and wearing appropriate clothes.

Wearing flip-flops can count as being inadequately prepared since it could interfere with your ability to use the pedals.

That could lead to a £100 fine and 3 points on your license.

If the case escalates to court, then the fine could rise to £5000.

I gave my house a designer makeover using Shein for just £270 – but there’s a catch they don’t tell you about

GIVING your home a designer makeover – but with a bargain price tag – sounds like an impossible task.

But while Janine Santos was browsing the Chinese retail website, Shein – known for selling clothes super cheaply – she suddenly spotted a ‘Home & Kitchen’ category.

She ordered these £3 and £7 prints to decorate the walls as well as dried pampas grass for £4.19[/caption]

There, on her screen, appeared to be the solution to her problem.

Attractive-looking curtains, cushions, tapestries, bedding, storage baskets and much more were being offered at rock bottom prices. It seemed too good to be true.

One thing led to another and soon Janine had bought around 50 items to give her Cardiff home a stylish new “boho” look that has transformed it from top to bottom.

The bill for her haul came in at just £269.

“I wasn’t sure about it, as it was so cheap,” says Janine, a 47-year-old cruise fleet manager. “But the quality looked good.

“Even if I’d gone somewhere else which is considered good value, like Ikea, I would have spent over £1000, easy.”

Before she discovered Shein homeware, Janine had a weakness for splurging on high end, expensive items.

“I used to use brands like Andrew Martin, Osborne & Little and Farrow & Ball,” says Janine, who is mum to Keanau, 26, and married to Damon, 53, a tiler.

“I also used to love Flamant, a high-end Belgian brand. They were my go-to for timeless pieces.” But when she decided to give her three-bedroom semi a refresh last December, Janine was looking to economise.

“I spend six months away at sea each year with work and when I come home, all I want is a space to relax,” she says.

“I’d been meaning to do this for a while and make it feel more homely. But I wanted to tighten my belt. I prefer to spend my money on experiences these days, like holidays, and thought: ‘How can I do this affordably?’”

Janine was shopping for clothing on Shein last December when she noticed they also sell homeware.

The China-based retailer’s popularity is currently soaring in the UK, with sales jumping by nearly 40 per cent to £1.5bn last year. It is expected to become Britain’s sixth largest clothing retailer by 2027.

For Janine, the prices seemed too good to ignore, so she ordered two photographic prints and some pampas grass to test the waters.

“I used to buy my prints from King & McGaw, which specialises in fine art prints,” says Janine.

“I paid £300 each for two prints years ago.

“But these 50cm x 70cm Shein prints were £3 and £7. I didn’t know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. They were delivered eight days later, in a cardboard box, and were printed on high quality cardboard. They also came rolled up, so there were no creases.

“They didn’t come with frames, so I got some from Amazon, at £50 for three.”

A couple of weeks later, Janine placed a second, bigger order, then a third.

She bought, among other items, a rug to go in front of the fire (£5.24), a king size duvet cover set with pillows (£26.48), two single  curtains (£21.75 each), a beige woven wall tapestry (£2.29), dried pampas grass (£4.19), two artificial ivy plants (£1.85 each), three white woven storage baskets (£6.12 each), a wall sticker (£1.30) and a cute ornament of someone reading (£1.10).

‘Cushion crazy’

“When I told my husband how much everything cost, he said: ‘There’s no way, you’re lying to me.’

“And one friend who came round couldn’t believe it when I told her so much of my stuff was from Shein – she literally screamed. I think she was expecting me to say some fancy, overpriced designer brand.

“She went straight to the website and started filling her basket. People have this idea that Shein is only for clothes – but the home stuff is genuinely stylish and surprisingly good quality. Nothing I ordered felt below par.”

When I told my husband how much everything cost, he said: ‘There’s no way, you’re lying to me’

Janine’s star buy was a pair of cream curtains for the bedroom. Curtains are sold individually on Shein and Janine bought two for £21.75 each. “In the past I’ve paid over a thousand pounds for a pair of curtains,” she says.

“They were handmade, very thick, like quilts. I don’t feel I need that sort of thing any more.“They’re my favourite – they’re lined and they’ve got this lace overlay – they’re really drapey and beautiful. I bought the pole off Shein as well for £11.44.”

Janine is also impressed with the bedding she bought from the retailer. She paid £25 for a king size polycotton white duvet cover and two matching pillowcases.

And the cushions were so cheap – just £3 each – that Janine went “cushion crazy”.

“I’ve got them all over the house,” she says.

“One is a tan leather look, the others are like the tapestry on the wall, with tassels on them. Damon loves the new look. The only thing he has said is: ‘Please, no more cushions’.”

‘Boho with a designer twist’

Another big hit was the pampas grass.

“I ordered the large size,” says Janine. I thought: ‘It’s going to be limp, but I can try it.’ Luckily, it’s really full.”

Janine’s method is to spend more money on big-ticket items – she recently bought a bed and chest of drawers from Freemans for about £1000 and a sofa from DFS for around £2,000 – and save on the accessories that finish off a room.

She describes her style as “boho with a designer twist”, mixing budget buys with statement pieces. “Spending so little is great, because if I want to do a different theme, I can buy a load more stuff from Shein,” she says.

“I will give these to charity, then I can buy new things. I’m just layering on to make a new theme. The foundations stay, they are good quality.”

Shipping is free, too, if you spend more than £35. And there are other incentives, says Janine.

“They give you vouchers. They say: add another item to your basket to receive a bigger discount.

“Then when I look at it, it’s as if I’ve got those curtains free.”

But Shein is not popular with everyone. The brand has been criticised for its sustainability practices, with concerns raised about textile waste and excessive carbon emissions.

I’m not here trying to impress anyone, I’m creating a space that feels like me

Last August, Shein admitted it had found two cases of child labour in its supply chain and factories failing to pay the minimum wage.

Janine says: “I know there are conversations around sustainability with brands like Shein and it’s something I do think about.

“When I was decorating, I made sure to choose pieces I actually love and knew I’d keep – not something trendy for a quick fix. I’ve never been sent the wrong product, or had to return anything, either.

“I think sustainability is also about how you use things and how long you keep them, not just where they come from.”

“I’ve mixed and matched, like I would with clothes. I might buy a designer outfit, but wear a T-shirt from Primark.

“I’ll change a few things in winter, like adding a fluffy rug and throws. I like that I can switch things up without spending a fortune.”

Janine has converted the garage in her house, adding an upstairs level and separate entrance to create an Airbnb.

She also has an Airbnb property in Egypt. Both are decorated with Shein homeware.

“I love my ‘Shein house’,” she says.

“It feels warm, modern and personal – and that’s what matters, not that I’ve had any negative comments – quite the reverse.

“I’m not here trying to impress anyone, I’m creating a space that feels like me. It’s like I’ve curated a little Pinterest board in real life.”
