Drogheda United owners to cover HUGE shortfall after European expulsion as Ben Boycott slams UEFA ruling

DROGHEDA UNITED chairman Ben Boycott has confirmed that owners Trivela will cover the €525,000 hole in the club’s budget following their Conference League expulsion.

The Drogs learnt on Monday that their CAS appeal against being barred from European competition under multi-club ownership rules had been rejected.

The statement comes after Drogheda United manager Kevin Doherty’s side were expelled from Europe

And it meant that a shortfall of €525,000 – the minimum prize money – this year in expected revenue.

But Boycott confirmed that it will have no impact on Drogheda United this season.

In an open letter to fans, he wrote: “Trivela will cover the shortfall in revenue from missing Europe, and we are fully committed to seeing this project through.

“Day-to-day operations are unaffected.  I will be meeting personally with our players and staff in the coming days, and I hope that we as a group can remain focused on the task at hand.”

Trivela also own Danish club Silkeborg, who also qualified for the Conference League and led to Drogheda United’s expulsion.

Under UEFA rules, the club with a lower league place is excluded where two clubs have the same owners.

But Boycott continues to argue that UEFA sticking with early deadlines and not allowing flexibility as was the case in previous years was harsh on the Drogs.

And he claims that UEFA contacted a number of clubs potentially impacted, but not Drogheda United.

Drogs submitted to CAS that UEFA gave “unequal treatment.” UEFA denied it and CAS agreed in a 2-1 majority vote.

He said: “It seems that some of those that were contacted and began taking steps before this deadline were then given time to implement structures after the deadline.

“We were not ever contacted directly, and Drogheda was not afforded that same flexibility.

“Worse still, historical precedent gave us every reason to believe that we would have a path to resolve any concerns post-assessment date.

“In recent years, multiple clubs have enacted share transfers, blind trust structures, and other remedies after the assessment date.

“Those precedents shaped our expectations—and we acted accordingly.

“I personally believe this decision makes an example of Drogheda so that UEFA can signal a change of approach to its regulation of MCOs (multi-club ownerships)

“It punishes a club that, just a year ago, was still part-time and operating without a CEO.

“It punishes a community-focused organization run with integrity, ambition, and limited resources—while major clubs with compliance departments and vast legal teams were granted direct communication and additional time to comply.

“That said, accountability ultimately falls on us at DUFC and at Trivela Group.

“The responsibility to navigate regulations—however murky or fast-changing—belongs to our leadership.

“And for that, I offer a personal, sincere apology to our players, staff, and supporters.  This will never happen again.”

Rachel Zelger’s remake of popular musical branded ‘woke’ after fans spot ridiculous warning signs at London theatre

A MAJOR new production of Evita has been slapped with a woke trigger warning for “loud music and sudden noises”.

Audiences are also told they could be upset by strobe lighting, flashing lights and haze.

The West End musical sees American star Rachel Zegler — as Eva Peron — sing its main ballad Don’t Cry For Me Argentina from a balcony to passers-by outside the venue for free.

Those who have paid up to £245 for tickets watch it on a screen inside the London Palladium.

Crowds are gathering in the street every night to watch Zegler, 24, perform.

Fans have been recording clips of her and posting them on social media, where they have amassed millions of views.

Trigger warnings for shows have been criticised by acting great Sir Ian McKellen, 86.

He said previously: “I think it’s ludicrous. I quite like to be surprised by loud noises and outrageous behaviour on stage.”

Despite the warning and Zegler’s free performance, the 130-minute show has been praised by paying punters.

Evita began a 12-week run on Saturday and tells how Peron rose from poverty to become one of the most powerful women in Latin America as First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death at 33 in 1952.

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote the musical and chart-topper Don’t Cry for Me Argentina in 1978, with Madonna playing Peron in a film version 29 years ago.

The decision to have Zegler sing outside came from director Jamie Lloyd.

His version of Sunset Boulevard, for which Nicole Scherzinger recently won a Tony Award, also featured an outdoor section.

Silly trigger warnings have hit several recent theatre shows.

A production of Oliver! advises viewers it will include themes of poverty, hunger and crime. Phantom of the Opera audiences were told it would include smoke and bangs.

A warning about nudity was put on a production of The Full Monty — a show about male strippers — while Matilda the Musical alerts the audience about the inclusion of a “loud burp”.

Zegler’s stage role comes three months after her live-action remake of Snow White hit cinemas.

The film had a £200million budget and made £148million at the box office as it was criticised for “going woke.”

Actors were replaced with CGI dwarves. And the plot was changed to be about the princess becoming a fearless leader, rather than ultimately finding love.

Zegler said the Disney original was “extremely dated when it comes to the ideas of women being in roles of power”.

She added: “People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it’s, like, yeah, it is — because it needed that.”

Luke Littler ‘can’t pass his driving test’ as darts ace eyes buying hot hatchback after being driven around in a van

DARTS sensation Luke Littler has hit a roadblock in his incredible success story – as he “can’t pass” his driving theory test.

The arrows ace has had an unbelievable 18 months since first bursting onto the sporting scene with him becoming the youngest ever world champion and bagging an MBE.

Luke was teased about his theory test by close friend AngryGinge when the pair appeared on Celebrity Gogglebox last week[/caption]

The teenage wonderkid stunned the world when he was crowned the best darts player on the planet at just 17 years old in January.

Luke, now 18, has gone on to win two World Series of Darts titles, 13 PDC titles and five major titles, as well as being crowned the youngest player to hit a televised nine-dart finish.

His impressive accolades and lucrative sponsorship deals have even propelled him to a net worth of over £2million and helped him become one of the nation’s most-loved sportsmen.

But he’s been lovingly mocked by his pal Morgan Burtwistle, better known as streamer AngryGinge, in recent days about the one thing Luke can’t quite get to grips with.

AngryGinge – the stand out celebrity in Soccer Aid last weekend – mocked Luke about not being able to pass his driving theory on national TV.

The pair made their debut appearance on Celebrity Gogglebox on Friday night, when Luke’s YouTube mate quizzed him on his overflowing trophy cabinet.

Pointing to the impressive accolades sitting on a shelf next to the sofa, AngryGinge asks him: “What have we got behind us here, Luke?”

He laughs before correcting himself, adding: “What haven’t we got?”

Smirking, Luke acknowledges his awards, including his incredible achievement in May when he became the first person to win five Premier League nights in the same year.

The Nuke’s even managed to sweep up a sixth triumph which took him past his own tally of nightly wins from last year, where he won a maiden title.

Laughing, AngryGinge goes on: “You get a bonus as well don’t you? We can all do the maths, Luke. You’re doing alright.”

But then he lovingly mocks: “You can do all this, but you can’t pass your driving theory.”

Luke, who laughs in response, previously revealed when he turned 17 that driving lessons were first on his agenda.

But it appears he’s been unable to hit the roads ever since as he continues to stall over his theory test.

Following his show-stopping display at Alexandra Palace in January, Luke, of Warrington, Cheshire, said he was desperate to get behind the wheel.

He revealed that his dream car is a modest Mercedes A-Class – a step up from his previous favourite Ford Focus – and he was eyeing one up with his £500,000 winnings.

But the sportsman was initially forced to cancel his driving lessons due to burnout fears regarding his busy schedule.

He had more bad luck when vandals trashed his van in May during an exhibition appearance in Norwich.

Luke, who owns the vehicle and is driven around by his team, branded the thugs “scum of the earth”.

His representative has been contacted for comment.

The new release boasts a star-studded cast, including Jodie, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, Erin Kellyman and Jack O’Connell

And the new 28 Years Later film follows the classic 2002 movie starring Peaky Blinders actor Cillian.

He’s returning as an executive producer – and will even appear as original character Jim “in a surprising way”, according to Sony Motion Pictures chairman Tim Rothman.

Arriving for the premiere of the hotly-anticipated new movie, Jodie turned heads in her floor length metallic dress.

The 32-year-old actress oozed glam with her makeup look on point, and her blonde locks in a straight down do.

She partnered her dress with some metallic heels and a smokey eye, while walking the red carpet in London, to the backdrop of a wall of skulls.

The beautiful actress posed for photos with Danny Boyle and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes rocked up in a statement blue suit for the World Premiere at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson put on a dapper display, and was seen posing for photos with his wife Sam Taylor-Johnson, who looked striking in a white dress.

The 14-year-old star of the film, Alfie Williams, also walked the red carpet in a red suit and black top, and joined together with his co-stars for photos.

The star-studded event saw a string of celebrity faces in attendance, from TV host Joel Dommett to model Tigerlily Taylor.

Speaking about her new film project, Jodie said: “Having met Danny [Boyle], he’s incredibly sure and confident and innovative

“As an actor to be on a set with someone like that who’s leading the charge is so exciting.

“I remember seeing 28 Days Later and I was so struck with how it was so rooted in reality, and it was more about the exploration of us as a species and our behaviour and how we react.

“It felt like there was a lot of emotional truth within the film that really anchored it. That’s also what I felt when I read this script.”

Meanwhile, Cillian says the 22-year-old movie is the only one of his films he watches back.

“I never watch my own films, except that one. I have great affection for it.”

He added: “I can’t give much more at this point, but I’ve always said I would love to be involved because that movie changed everything for me.

“It’s always on around Halloween and during the pandemic people were constantly sending me clips.

“And I’ve shown it to my kids. It’s really stood up, even though it’s 22 years old now.”

28 Years Later is set to be released on June 20, 2025.
