A GLOBAL pop star has revealed they were just weeks away from having a very different celebrity career.
Emma Bunton is best known as Baby Spice from the 90s mega girl group, The Spice Girls, but she very nearly bagged herself a role in soap land that could have changed the course of pop history.
The Wannabe icon had always wanted to be on stage and screen but before singing became her passion, Emma pursued an acting career.
Keen to one day become a household name, Emma joined the prestigious Sylvia Young Theatre School.
She had some success and managed to land a minor role in the ITV police drama The Bill in 1993 and she was cast as a prostitute in the BBC drama To Play the King.
But it was Albert Square that almost gave Emma the big break that she’d been hoping for.
Back in 1992 the Heart Radio presenter had appeared briefly in Walford as a criminal, attempting to mug pensioner Jules.
Producers were keen to see more of Emma though, and they invited her to audition for a new character they were going to introduce called Bianca.
Emma tried out, got through the initial screenings and down to the last four hopefuls for the soon to be legendary part.
It wasn’t meant to be though and BBC bosses decided Patsy Palmer would be better suited to play the fiery market trader.
This fateful rejection left the door open to other opportunities and it was only a few weeks later when Emma was asked to sing for the managers of a new girl group.
She said in an interview with Guardian Guide back in 2019, which was then reprinted in journalist Michael Cragg’s book Reach For The Stars: “I’d just missed out on playing Bianca in EastEnders. I was down to the last four.
“So I’d just found out about that and I was devastated. I was at college and a singing teacher asked if I’d ever thought of being in a band.
“She said, ‘Well I’m working with some girls and one of them wants to go back to uni so they’re looking for another girl’.
“She told me to go and meet these two managers, I sang for them and they asked me when I could move in with the girls.”
These were, of course, the Spice Girls and Emma was catapulted into global stardom as part of one of the most successful pop groups of all time.
With the 40th anniversary of EastEnders coming up, fans are looking forward to some more incredible cameos from iconic faces of Walford's past. But who have we had so far?
Tracy-Ann Oberman – Oberman returned as Chrissie Watts, a character she last played nearly two decades ago.
Paul Bradley – Bradley returned as Nigel Bates, a character he last played over 25 years ago.
Micheal French – French returned as David Wicks, a character he last played two decades ago.
Patsy Palmer – Palmer returned as Bianca Jackson, a character she last played in 2019.
Coming up this year…
Ross Kemp – Kemp will reprise his role as Grant Mitchell, a character he first played in 1990. The BBC has described Kemp’s storyline as “explosive”. Kemp said it was an “absolute honour” to return to the show.
Other aspects of the 40th anniversary celebration include: A wedding between fan favorites, A huge explosion at the Queen Vic, and A live interactive episode.
Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of the group’s debut single, Wannabe, and The Sun recently revealed that plans for a landmark Netflix drama of their story has been put into jeopardy.
The streamer has failed to get every member of the group on board with the project but it seems that they have now decided to go ahead with, or without them.
POPSTAR Rita Ora looked the picture of happiness as she strolled on the beach alongside husband Taika Waititi.
The Let You Love Me hitmaker stripped down to a spot patterned bikini for her loved-up day out.
Rita and her film director husband have been enjoying some down time on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia and enjoyed a dip in the sea during their break.
Taika, 49, made a bold statement on the beach as he paraded up and down in a pair of bright orange shorts.
The 34-year-old planted a kiss on New Zealand native Taika’s lips at one point as they walked along the golden sands.
Their outing came on Australia Day with Taika holding his wife close as they walked back along the beach to their waterfront hotel.
Rita put her washboard abs on full display as her gym-honed figure soaked up the sun during the outing.
She kept her soaking wet hair pulled back and went make-up free for the day.
Rita has spent plenty of time Down Under in recent years thanks to her big-money role as a coach on The Voice Australia as well as it being close to her hubby’s home.
The star is also currently enjoying success Stateside having been chosen to replace Nicole Scherzinger on the US version of The Masked Singer.
Now, she is aiming to set her sights on an even bigger role with The Sun revealing the star is in talks to land a role in a Marvel movie.
Rita was overheard discussing her film plans recently at the British Fashion Awards.
An event-goer told The Sun: “Rita was dressed like a baddie from a Marvel film, and when someone commented on it she let slip she has a part in a new Marvel film.
“She confirmed she had landed the role of someone evil and that she was super excited about getting stuck into it.”
Rita’s husband Taika Waititi has previously directed two Marvel films, including Thor: Love And Thunder in 2022
Rita parted ways with her long-time music manager Sarah Stennett to focus on new projects at the end of last year and it seems being on screen is now at the top of her agenda.
A DRIVER has taken the internet by storm after giving her Renault Clio a sparkly pink glow-up with a paint brush.
Maisie-Ellen Pearson took to TikTok to show how she took her vehicle from bright red to hot pink with a few licks of paint mixed with silver glitter.
According to the young woman, she had purchased the car – a Renault Clio – a few days ago and decided it needed to go pink.
Armed with just one medium size paint brush, the blue-eyed beauty first poured in a whole bag of shiny glitter into the pot and gave it a good mix with a piece of wood she’d found outdoors.
Once the paint was all ready and she had carefully taped around the lights and windows, the car enthusiast began the makeover process, sharing the journey on a video on social media.
To make the vehicle fir the Barbie theme even more, the driving fanatic had also popped into a store where she forked out for ”stunning” pink mats, a pink steering wheel cover, as well as a sticker that read ‘You just got passed my a girl’ and a pink rally flaps.
Another feature in the freshly-purchased motor included spray-painted fog lights – which Maisie explained never came in handy where she’s based.
”Do you even need fog lights? Cause I live in Blackpool and it’s never even foggy,” she said.
”I just sprayed the black,” she told the 119k followers, many of whom were left concerned about the safety of the vehicle.
Maisie, who posts under the username @maisiepee, used some of the leftover spray paint to go over the legendary diamond emblem in the middle.
”I actually think that’s pretty cool,” the beauty seemed to be chuffed with her unleashed creativity.
The now-viral clip, which has been viewed more than 2.2million times in just two days, also sees the young woman use the same black paint to make a DIY sun strip.
But while the young driver may have been all pleased with herself, the pink transformation hasn’t necessarily gone down a treat online.
Hundreds of horrified viewers flocked to comments left in total disbelief, with one writing: ”Nothing screams ‘avoid me, I’m a danger to the road’ more than this.”
Someone else chimed in: ”What in the council estate front garden is this?”
”What a chav,” a third added, as another insisted that Maisie’s brains had ”left the chat”.
However, not everyone was racing to criticise and slam the sparkly glow-up, as one fan said: ”this is absolutely brilliant.”
”can you do my car please I’ll pay you,” another begged.
”Oh this is giving 2014 vibes & I’m HERE for it,” a viewer commented.
