Tipperary legend makes confident prediction for county’s future as quarter-final vs Galway looms large

THE appearance of green shoots in Tipperary helped to convince Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher it was time to bring an end to his days in blue and gold.

As a three-time All-Ireland SHC winner, the Lorrha-Dorrha half-forward played a prominent role in Tipp’s greatest days of the recent past.

And Maher, who retired from inter-county hurling last October, feels there is substance to the growing sense within the Premier County that the future is looking bright too.

Three weeks since their Under-20s were crowned All-Ireland champions, that belief would be vindicated by reaching a first senior semi-final in six years.

The All-Ireland Under-21 triumph of 2010 was an important launchpad for what Maher went on to achieve at the highest level.

Promising youngsters such as Darragh McCarthy, Oisín O’Donoghue and Sam O’Farrell are already making a similar transition now.

Maher said: “It’s great to see and there’s huge potential in that Under-20 squad to come up and get into that senior panel.

“From our perspective back in 2010, it was huge for us to get into the senior panel and get involved in senior games, so that will bring them on immensely as well.

“There’s a good few of them boys that I think will have a bright future and long careers ahead of them wearing a Tipperary jersey.”

For Maher, there was no fairytale ending as his swansong season was utterly wretched.

Liam Cahill’s men were dumped out of the Championship with a game to spare in the Munster round robin.

Just five years after the county’s 28th Liam MacCarthy Cup triumph, it painted a bleak picture for the state of Tipp hurling. Nevertheless, Maher viewed the situation from a different perspective.

He explained: “Coming to the end of 2024, I know the campaign didn’t go well but I could see the green shoots that were in there around the group and I knew Tipperary would do well moving forward.

“Another thing I kind of said to myself was maybe the time for me to step away is now and give some younger player, one of the Under-20s, an opportunity to come into the panel and to take a place and get an opportunity to drive it on from there.”

COMING GOOD

Having come under intense scrutiny following the failure of last season, Cahill has overseen an impressive response in 2025.

A victory over Galway in tomorrow’s All-Ireland quarter-final would be Tipp’s fourth on the bounce.

Maher continued: “It’s just one of those things when you train so hard to peak at a certain time and it just doesn’t happen for whatever reason.

“But the group got back together. They went hard at it early this year and the fruits of that are showing now.

“An awful lot of these younger players, the likes of Jake Morris and these boys, are stepping up, which is huge and it’s needed.

“Ronan Maher is always a leader, Mikey Breen, there’s an awful lot of these boys putting their hands up to show that they have the leadership quality there that they always potentially had.

“But they’re really shoving it on this year, which is great to see.”

MAGICIAN MCGRATH

While the injection of youth is serving Tipperary well, Maher also hailed stalwart Noel McGrath, 34, who is still central to the cause in his 17th season.

The two-time All-Star said: “Noel is a generational player. He’s always had it since we were playing together at minor and I suppose Under-16 level.

“He’s always had something special about him. Fair play to him, he’s some operator.

“It was a joy to play beside him for so long. You probably don’t see half the work that he does away from the field to get himself into the condition.

“He looks after himself fierce well to still be able to operate at the level he is. It’s great to see that he’s still doing the job and it looks like there’s plenty left in the tank with him too.”

Five ways to keep your kids cool in the heat

IT can be really difficult - and costly - to keep kids cool when it's hot outside. But Fabulous Digital Senior Reporter and mum-of-two Sarah Bull shares five ways to help, and they won't break the budget either.

Strip them off

It might sound simple, but stripping kids off at home can really help them regulate their temperature when it’s warm outside. Just remember to regularly apply suncream, as more of their skin will be exposed to the sun.

Cool down bedrooms before nighttime

When it’s hot outside, it can be difficult for kids to go to sleep – especially if their bedroom feels like an oven. If you have a room that’s not in direct sunshine, keep the windows open to let in a breeze. It’s also a good idea to keep the curtains closed, to prevent the room from heating up.

Wear a hat

Another simple technique, but one that really works. Make sure that if your kids are playing outside, they’ve got a hat on. It keeps their face and head shielded from the sun, and also helps if you’ve got a little one who struggles with bright sunlight. If your tot struggles to keep a hat on, try one with a strap that goes under the chin to help.

Avoid the car

The car can be one of the hottest places during a heatwave, and often takes a long time to cool down. If you have the option, it’s better to stay at home rather than taking kids out anywhere in a hot car.

Stay hydrated

This is always important, but even more so in a heatwave. Make sure you’re regularly reminding your kids to have a drink, and top them up with cool liquids whenever you can. Use ice too to ensure it’s as cold as it can possibly be.

Another added: “This looks good.”

Whilst a third person tagged a bargain hunter and begged: “Please grab me one of these!”

Best thing I brought two years ago and still going now

Facebook user

At the same time, many happy shoppers eagerly raced to the comments to share their rave reviews on the affordable fans.

One parent commented: “Got one of these two years ago for my toddler and it’s a godsend!!”

How to keep cool in a heatwave

Most of us welcome hot weather, but when it's too hot, there are health risks. Here are three ways to keep cool according to the NHS...

Keep out of the heat if you can.

If you have to go outside, stay in the shade especially between 11am and 3pm, wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothes, and avoid exercise or activity that makes you hotter.

Cool yourself down.

Have cold food and drinks, avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks, and have a cool shower or put cool water on your skin or clothes.

Keep your living space cool.

Close windows during the day and open them at night when the temperature outside has gone down. Electric fans can help if the temperature is below 35 degrees. Check the temperature of rooms, especially where people at higher risk live and sleep.

A second user claimed: “Best thing I brought two years ago and still going now.”

Someone else beamed: “Yep mine’s brilliant, best I’ve bought. Side of bed, back of car for dog and on him in his bed.”

Meanwhile, one Home Bargains fan shared: “I have two of these, work wonders.”

The reality star, 25, took to social media to share the couple’s exciting news.

They looked smitten as they got ready to take the next big step in the budding romance

Finn’s mystery lady was seen beaming as she leaned close to her man.

He captioned the sweet snap with: “We’re home owners!!

“Today we picked up the keys to our little Victorian home!

“We cannot wait to get started with the renovations and make it our own! We couldn’t be happier.”

The former semi-pro footballer is still yet to reveal the identity of his new partner, but since going Instagram official last summer, he has shared plenty of loved-up snaps with her.

EX FILES

Finn launched to fame on Love Island in 2020, and that’s where he met his now ex-girlfriend, Paige.

After three years together, the pair announced their split in 2023.

It was an amicable break-up, with Paige admitting they’d “lost themselves in each other” after winning winter Love Island and moving in together straight away.

However, they were reunited last year, when they both took part in Celebrity Ex On The Beach.

However, things took a turn when shortly after filming wrapped, it was revealed that MAFS Australia star Tamara slept with Finn the night before the MTV show’s launch party.

A source told The Sun at the time: “The cast was rocked by Finn and Tamara’s fling. They felt really uncomfortable for Paige who they’d grown close to.

“At the party, the girls sided with Paige and kept their distance from Tamara.

“Tamara was heard telling guests she was having a ‘miserable’ time and they were ‘all being so mean’.”

Ella Toone breaks down in tears as Lionesses star receives message from teammate’s dad ahead of Euro 2025

ELLA TOONE broke down in tears after receiving a heartfelt message from the dad of England teammate Alessia Russo.

Both players are preparing to turn out for the Lionesses this summer as Sarina Wiegman’s team look to defend their Euro crown.

England start their campaign next month against France before further tricky group tests against the Netherlands and Wales.

Russo and Toone will both be hoping to make a major impact, with the latter netting in England’s 2022 final win over Germany.

But the Manchester United star has been forced to endure heartbreak this season after dad Nick Toone passed away in September

He was diagnosed with prostate cancer the day after the Lionesses’ Euro 2022 victory.

And Nick sadly died three days before his 60th birthday, with Toone recently revealing she “didn’t properly grieve” his passing.

But ahead of this summer’s continental competition, Toone was left in tears as the father of England teammate and Arsenal star Russo paid tribute to Nick.

Mario Russo appeared on his daughter’s podcast, which she co-hosts with Toone.

And as Mario hailed Nick, Arsenal ace Toone immediately became emotional.

He said: “As this is a Toone and Russo podcast, it’s only right that I should also say that Nick, Ella’s dad, was one of my best friends in football.

“We met many years ago when the girls were playing at England youth together and we were fortunate enough to travel around Europe watching them play.

“Which culminated in Nick and I having to spend many hours in some, quite frankly, dodgy establishments, mulling over every minute of every game that we watched our daughters play.

“I’ve got some fantastic memories of those times. I know that Nick’s values and the qualities that he taught Ella will hold her in good stead and guide her through her career and off the pitch as well.

“And I know that Nick’s watching from above and he’s sorely missed by everybody that knew him.”

Teary-eyed Toone was all smiles as she responded: “Oh my god, now I am crying.

“Nice one Mario, this is meant to be a fun pod, now we’re all crying. It was all good until then. That’s so nice, bless him.”

Fans were quick to react to the heartwarming incident, with one saying: “Love that.”

Another declared: “Aww, that was pure emotion.”

One added: “An example of a real man.”

Arsenal ‘keeping tabs on Noni Madueke situation’ with Chelsea star on radar of several Premier League clubs

CHELSEA ace Noni Madueke has been linked with various Premier League clubs, including Arsenal – reports suggest.

Madueke, 23, amassed a total of 42 appearances last season and played a major role in the Blues’ Conference League triumph with three goals and one assists in five matches.

Chelsea ace Noni Madueke is linked with various Premier League clubs, including Arsenal
Noni Madueke's 2024-25 Chelsea season statistics.

According to The Telegraph, the winger’s recent performances have drawn interest across the top flight during the summer transfer window.

The same source claims the England international is on the Gunners’ radar.

However, the North Londoners have been monitoring several different forwards during the transfer window and it is unknown at this stage how keen they are on Madueke.

The ex-PSV Eindhoven star has not been put up for sale by Chelsea, who have also not offered him to other clubs.

But rivals believe the wideman could still be sold this summer as he is not considered untouchable in Enzo Maresca’s starting line-up.

The West Londoners have not received an approach or held talks with rivals Arsenal over Madueke.

But Mikel Arteta’s side is thought to be among those who have looked at his situation.

This comes as a number of Premier League teams are looking to sign wingers this summer.

Tottenham – where Madueke cut his teeth as a teenager in the academy – are looking for someone to cover the right flank.

The same goes for Newcastle, who need someone to provide competition for Jacob Murphy.

And Manchester United are pushing for the signing of Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo.

Arsenal have been rigorously looking for an option that can boost their attack, with Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams posing as a top target.

However, Barcelona appear to be frontrunners for Williams’ signature ahead of this coming season.

Nevertheless, Arsenal and Chelsea have made several deals these past few years despite being major rivals.

The likes of Kai Havertz and Jorginho have moved to the Emirates from Stamford Bridge, while Raheem Sterling played for Arteta’s team on loan last season and Kepa Arrizabalaga looks set for a similar path.

Inside Arsenal's frustrating striker transfer saga

By Jordan Davies

ARSENAL’S never-ending hunt for a world-class striker is in turmoil as deals for Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres stall.

The Gunners were confident of doing their business quickly this summer after months of preparation by boss Mikel Arteta and new sporting director Andrea Berta.

But inflated asking prices and broken gentlemen’s agreements have derailed those plans and left Arsenal frustrated.

Sesko believed he would be allowed to leave RB Leipzig for around £60million, while SunSport understands Gyokeres was told £59m would be enough to seal his own exit.

But those price-tags have gone up, leaving Arsenal debating whether they represent value for money.

While the players’ camps are also growing restless, knowing the Gunners can only sign one of them.

So what next? Will Arsenal keep waiting in the hope of fees eventually going down? Or turn to other targets, like Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike?

Whatever they decide, with pre-season looming and the fixtures already out, Arteta will be desperate for them to move quickly to avoid another nearly season.
