‘Murdered’ mum’s kids were ‘at a sleepover’ when she was stabbed to death before house exploded in ‘gas blast’

THE CHILDREN of a mum who was stabbed to death before the house exploded are understood to have been at a sleepover when the tragedy unfolded.

Charity worker Annabel Rook was discovered in the London home after the street “shook” from a suspected gas blast.

The 46-year-old mum was a “truly kind and gentle soul”, her neighbours said.

A friend of the family said her two sons were at a sleepover on Tuesday when she died.

They told The Standard: “We know them well. Our kids are in the same class. The school is on the corner. We are all here because of the school.

“They have two little boys. The kids were out at a sleepover. We know the family from birthday parties, everything.”

A mother-of-two, Annabel supported women who are survivors of gender based violence, female migrants and child refugees for two decades.

A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

He was taken to hospital with slash wounds where he currently remains. His condition is not life-changing or life-threatening.

Some 40 firefighters scrambled to the scene to put out a blaze which started an hour after neighbours heard “massive bangs” from the peaceful family home in Stoke Newington, North London.

Two children, aged seven and nine, were taken to hospital as a precaution, but are not currently believed to have been in the building during the explosion.

Cops said: “We do believe this to be a domestic-related incident.”

Ms Rook was the co-founder and head of the refugee and women’s charity MamaSuze, and had worked with “marginalised and displaced people” for more than two decades.

Neighbours in the leafy London suburb told The Sun they heard a “massive bang” before paramedics attempted to resuscitate Ms Rook on the street outside her £1million home.

One said: “I knew them and their kids very well. We are in complete shock. Our daughter was their babysitter.

“Smoke was billowing around the street and we had to shut all our windows.

“It is lucky nothing happened to nobody else.”

Ms Rook was the head of several special projects at the accomplished charity including its well-regarded theatre productions.

In a post on social media, she had written: “I have been working with marginalised and displaced people for over 20 years.

“I believe the ability to play and create should be a fundamental human right and in my work I aim to enable people to be creative and help them find their voice.

“At MamaSuze, we strive to create a joyful, inclusive space dedicated to enhancing the lives of women and children who are survivors of forced displacement and gender based violence.

“We build a strong community through offering diverse workshops in different art forms that nurture creativity, foster social connections and rebuild confidence and identity.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who leads policing in the local area, said:  “This is an extremely tragic incident and our thoughts are with the victim’s family at this very difficult time.

“Our officers arrested a man on suspicion of murder at the scene and will be conducting interviews as soon as possible, to establish the full circumstances that led to Annabel’s death.

“While enquiries continue, at this early stage we do believe this to be a domestic-related incident.

“We understand what happened will cause concern within the Hackney community and residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area, along with a crime scene, as we carry out the investigation.

“We are working closely alongside our partners at Hackney Council to help support those residents locally who have been impacted by this.”

The Metropolitan Police said: “A woman aged 46 was found inside the property with stab wounds.

“Despite the efforts of paramedics, she was sadly declared dead at the scene.

“A 44-year-old man was arrested at the address on suspicion of murder.

“He was taken to hospital with slash wounds where he currently remains. His condition is not life-changing or life-threatening.

“Two children aged nine and seven have also been taken to hospital as a precaution but are not believed to have been inside the property at the time of the gas explosion.”

LFB station commander Darren McTernan said: “Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area for most of this morning while investigations into the cause of this incident are carried out.

“There are road closures in place on Stoke Newington Church Street from the junction of the A10 to Defoe Road.

“Residents should also note that Kersley Road is completely shut at this time.”

Crews from Stoke Newington, Islington, Homerton and Holloway fire stations were called to the scene.

The Met and London Fire Brigade (LFB) are investigating the cause.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police on 101 quoting CAD 926/17June or to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Timeform boffins have picked out these tips on day two at Royal Ascot including big fancy for Aidan O’Brien

THE boffins at Timeform reckon punters should side with Karl Burke in the opening race on Day Two, the 25-runner Group 2 Queen Mary over five furlongs.

The bookies do too as they have North Yorkshire trainer Burke’s ZELAINA (2.30) as the 9-4 favourite after her visually impressive debut win at Nottingham.

Los Angeles is well-fancied in today’s Prince Of Wales’s Stakes[/caption]

Timeform have her on a rating of 90P, the large ‘P’ denoting a horse expected to show significant improvement.

If she does, it could take her past the current top-rated filly in the race True Love who is also expected to improve from her rating of 93p.

Punters should also note canny Burke has won two of the last three editions of this race.

LOS ANGELES (4.20) is not just the top-rated runner in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, Timeform make him the second-best horse currently in training in Britain and Ireland.

The form gurus were particularly taken by his win in last month’s Tattersalls Gold Cup which earned him a rating of 126, 2lb less than stablemate Jan Brueghel.

What Los Angeles may lack for in true superstar quality he makes up for with his never-say-die attitude which was too much for Anmaat at The Curragh who looked as if he was going to win but waved the white flag when gritty Los Angeles eyeballed him and battled back.

However Timeform have Anmaat just 1lb behind on 125. See The Fire has a rating of 120 but her 3lb fillies’ allowance edges her closer on 123.

ROGUE LEGEND (6.10) is worth the wait. Timeform reckon he has the best form in the race and they believe a repeat of his win in a conditions race at Tipperary would be good enough today.

He is on a rating of 105p – a whopping 15lb clear of his rivals in this.

Martin says ‘no issue’ with bigger fines for nursing homes as HIQA in new powers & ‘change catalyst’ call after RTE doc

IRELAND’S health watchdog does not have the power to tackle or punish big businesses that have taken over Ireland’s nursing home industry, HIQA bosses confessed today.

It comes as officials issued a grovelling apology over the failings that saw residents being abused and neglected in two homes that were exposed by an RTE undercover investigation.

Footage from the doc revealed neglect of patients
RTÉ Investigates

Both of these homes have since been hit with warnings that they could be closed down if improvements are not made with gardai also called in to investigate incidents covered in the exposé.

And today Taoiseach Micheal Martin has said he has no problem with large fines being levelled against nursing homes that are repeatedly failing to meet standards.

He also said that closures have to be used as “a real consequence” for some nursing homes that are neglecting residents.

The RTE investigation sent undercover reporters into The Residence home in Portlaoise and Beneavin Manor in Dublin – both of which are owned by a large company named Emeis Ireland.

The documentary revealed shocking neglect of residents who were left lying in soiled clothing, crying for help and being roughly handled by staff.

The Oireachtas Health Committee today heard that 198 allegations of abuse of residents had been made in relation to Beneavin Manor while 40 allegations of abuse were made in the Residence in Portlaoise since 2023.

The health watchdog HIQA told TDs and Senators that both homes have been issued warnings that they could have their registration cancelled if drastic improvements are not made.

The company – Emeis Ireland – owns 23 more nursing homes in Ireland with HIQA launching new inspections in each of these facilities following the RTE exposé.

HIQA CEO Angela Fitzgerald issued a grovelling apology to the public over the nursing home scandal following criticism that the watchdog had previously signed off on the homes.

She said: “The recent RTÉ Investigates, was incredibly distressing and I want to apologise to anyone who feels let down by HIQA as the regulator.

LACK OF POWER

“What we witnessed in the programme should never have happened, and I hope that this can be a catalyst for change at a number of levels.

“I want to assure you that we have taken a number of steps to ensure the safety of residents and will continue to do so.”

The HIQA boss also revealed to TDs and Senators that the State’s watchdog does not have the power to fine or punish big businesses that are now running our nursing home sector.

Some 75 per cent of nursing homes in Ireland are now owned by private companies – an increase from 30 per cent just 20 years ago.

Just 15 large companies are in charge of 10,000 spaces for people in nursing homes in Ireland.

While HIQA does have the power to close down a nursing home, the watchdog does not have the power to go after the businesses that own the homes.

‘SYSTEM NOT WORKING’

HIQA told the Oireachtas Health Committee that they would need to be given extra powers from the Government in order to go after businesses with fines.

Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald told the Dail that HIQA had “its hands tied behind its back” when dealing with big businesses that run nursing homes.

The Dublin TD claimed the “State walked away” and allowed a “corporate takeover” of the care of older people in Ireland.

She said the “system is not working” if 198 complaints can be made against a nursing home but there is no accountability until RTE’s undercover reporters show up.

Towie star in heartbreaking secret split from boyfriend after cheating row on ITVBe show

THE Only Way Is Essex’s Harry Derbidge has revealed he’s secretly suffered another heartbreaking relationship split.

Harry, 31, has quietly parted ways with Australian hairdresser Jam Gaud after a romantic fling with him.

Harry has described himself as ‘very single’ to fans

Tattooed Aussie Jam confirmed his romance with Harry last year with a series of loved-up photos.

Just months earlier, Harry had broken up with Joe Blackman – who then moved on with his former best friend Junaid Ahmed.

Confirming the relationship, Jam had snapped a selfie as kissed Harry in a lift, while also sharing a picture of them holding hands.

But sadly, Harry has now confirmed their relationship has come to an end.

In a Q&A with fans on Instagram, Harry was asked: “Single? Taken? Situationship?”

Harry replied: “Very single haha!”

The Sun revealed in December that Harry had started dating Jam after jetting to Australia.

A source told us at the time: “Harry and Jam have been dating for a few months, he’s really happy and he’s got his family approval, including his cousin Amy Childs.

“His Towie co-stars are chuffed that he’s found love again.

“They’re enjoying some time in Australia together, where Jam is from. They’ve been going on dates over there and are very loved-up.

“Harry is looking forward to the future after the whole Towie saga and split from Joe and wants to put that behind him.

“He has healed now and is looking forward to what the future holds.”

In March, Harry was caught snogging his Towie co-star Freddie Bentley during the cast’s trip to Bali.

His relationship with Jam, meanwhile, had come just months after his bitter break-up with Joe Blackman.

The couple had begun dating in 2023 and their relationship played out on telly screens in Towie.

Harry Derbidge's relationship history

Harry Derbidge is a Towie OG, having joined the ITV reality show when he was just 16 in 2010.

In late 2013, Harry was linked to his Towie co-star Bobby Norris and they began dating in January 2014.

The couple’s relationship only lasted six months, with them splitting amid rumours Harry had cheated with an ex-boyfriend while in Tenerife.

In 2017, Harry began dating Dean Rowland and things quickly got serious.

The couple got engaged but were forced to cancel their wedding twice due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Harry and Dean even confirmed they had begun the adoption process in 2019, as they were keen to have children.

But this was also held up by lockdown and eventually the couple split in October 2021.

Dean confirmed on social media at the time: “It’s with a really heavy heart and absolute anxiety that I’m sharing this with you all.”

He added: “There are no secret nor salacious events at the root of decision- just two best friends realising it’s time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives possible.”

In early 2023, Harry enjoyed a brief fling with Junaid Ahmed. However, they quickly decided they were better off as friends.

In July that year, Harry revealed he had moved on with a cryptic photo of his hand on a mystery man’s leg.

It was later revealed to be Joe Blackman, who made his Towie debut as Harry’s boyfriend two months later.

Harry and Joe dated for two years and even planned to tie the knot in Las Vegas. But in August last year, they split.

Weeks later, Harry was left heartbroken as it was revealed Joe had started dating Junaid.

In December 2024, Harry started dating Australian hairdresser Jam Gaud.

He was caught snogging Towie co-star Freddie Bentley in March 2025 and confirmed he had secretly split with Jam in June.

However, in August last year The Sun exclusively revealed how Harry and Joe had gone their separate ways, just weeks after vowing to marry in Las Vegas.

Then days later, we reported that Joe had moved on with Harry’s best mate Junaid Ahmed, which left Harry heartbroken.

Dani Imbert later told Harry that Joe had “cheated” with Junaid before they had officially broken up.

The drama went on to play out in the ITVBe show.

In May this year, Junaid revealed he and Joe had taken the next step in their relationship by moving in together.

In a statement to The Sun, Junaid said; “So excited for this new journey for myself and Joe.. our dream Essex home.. we’ve been looking for a while now and ready to start this new chapter.”

Shocking moment two brazen cops are caught romping in field propped against their police car in broad daylight clinch

A GOB-SMACKING video shows two cops romping next to a police car in broad daylight.

A local caught the lawless behaviour on camera in Cyprus, and the footage has the holiday island aghast.

Driving through a rural area on the outskirts of Larnaka, the resident stumbled across a mind-blowing scene in the middle of a farmer’s field.

Their video shows a cop car parked up in full view after ploughing through the crops – clearly in a hurry.

The front passenger door is open and one party is bending over the seat.

The other appears to be going at it hammer-and-tongs behind her.

Vehicles stream past on another road just a stone’s throw away, also with a clear view of the car.

The local force confirmed it was probing a video of “a man and woman”.

Two officers have been identified in relation to the clip and temporarily dismissed from their posts until the inquiry is wrapped up.

The investigation was said to be focused on ascertaining whether the vehicle belonged to the force.

One member of the local police said: “We are not ruling anything out.

“There is a possibility that this is a fake video, footage that has been deliberately manipulated and we are investigating that too.

By Wednesday, however, the clip had been confirmed as legitimate.

Well-placed officials vowed the embarrassing incident would not be allowed to sully “the good name” of the force.

One source told The Sun: “If this video is for real it is deeply offensive but we will not let it get in the way of our good name and good work.”

Social media users had a field day after the video went viral late Tuesday.

Commenters said it had “humiliated” a police force put already under stress from the escalating conflict in the nearby Middle East.

Amid the mockery, police spokesperson Kyriaki Lambrianidou called for sensitivity, as children and families are involved.

The person who filmed could have handed the video over to police rather than post it online for public consumption, she told local media.

Cypriot police responded to a more serious case this week after a British tourist plunged ten metres from a hotel balcony.

The 24-year-old tourist was left fighting for his life when he fell from the platform in the party town Ayia Napa.

The lad was rushed to the Famagusta hospital in Paralimni, but then urgently transferred to Nicosia general hospital – the largest on the island.

Doctors described his condition as “serious”, and cops launched an investigation into the circumstances.
