HOLLYWOOD golden age actress Jan Shepard has died at the age of 96.

Shepard was famed for starring opposite Elvis Presley in 1958’s King Creole and 1966’s Paradise, Hawaiian Style.

The star died at a hospital in California on January 17 of pneumonia brought on by respiratory failure.

As well as acting alongside Elvis, who died in 1977, Shepard had a glittering TV career.

She earned dozens of small screen credits for her roles in westerns including Rawhide, The Virginian and Gunsmoke.

Shepard made her TV debut in 1952 on Fireside Theatre – one of the first successful filmed television shows.

But her most celebrated roles came in King Creole and Paradise, Hawaiian Style.

Speaking about her first encounter with Elvis, Shepard previously told Elvis Australia: “I went in the office and I was waiting to be called in.

“In walks Elvis with two of his buddies. I looked at him and he looked at me and we started to laugh.

“His jacket was the identical material and color of my slacks.

“He looked at me and he said, ‘Honey, I’m either going to have to give you my jacket or you’re going to have to give me your pants’.”

Shepard starred as Mimi Fisher – the sister of Elvis’ character Danny – in rock musical King Creole.

In Paradise, Hawaiian style, she took on the role of Betty Kohana, the wife of the business partner of Elvis’ character Rick Richards.

DRIVERS have been warned a major motorway used by 75,000 cars a day is set to close in hours – will you be affected?

There will also be closures on the A1(M) at Letchworth Gate Interchange between entry and exit slips at junction 9[/caption]

It will see the A1(M) Northbound J6 carriageway in Hertfordshire blocked off until 5am on Wednesday.

Manhole repairs are being carried out at the entry slip road at The Clock at Welwyn.

Drivers will be diverted to travel southbound to J4 at Stanborough, and then directed to turn around and continue their journey northbound on the A1(M).

There are also other works in place tonight, which began earlier this month.

Until Friday March 14, there will be closures on the A1(M) at Letchworth Gate Interchange between entry and exit slips at junction 9.

It will be shut down from 9pm to 5am, on weeknights only.

Motorists should instead travel through the up and over slip roads, to get back onto the A1(M) in both directions.

It comes as police were called to the A1(M) at around 1.18pm yesterday.

A multivehicle crash between J8 and J9 on the northbound carriageway saw one lane closed.

A Herts Police spokesperson said: “Two vehicles, a silver Hyundai and a BMW, were involved. No injuries were reported that required hospital treatment.”

It is not known whether this is connected to the road closures.

Elsewhere, another major motorway, used by 180,000 drivers every day, is set to close lanes at times for three weeks with diversion routes in place.

The M602 near Eccles, Greater Manchester, will undergo overnight “essential” barrier repairs throughout late January and into February.

The 4-mile-long motorway links the M60 ring road to Salford, bypassing the town of Eccles.

Highways North West said the works are being carried out to replace sections of the safety barrier for both the central reservation and along the roadside in both directions.

Running from January 21 to February 12, the works will run overnight from Monday to Friday, from 9pm to 5am between junctions two and three.

Works will also occasionally take place on Saturdays, running two hours longer until 7am on weekends.

If there is congestion from the lane closures, drivers joining the motorway from the M60 can leave at junction 2 and follow the A576 and later the A6 to continue their journey into the city.

If you are aiming to travel south, follow the A576 and then the A6, heading east, before taking the A5063 south which will link you up to the eastern end of the M602 at junction 3.

Last week drivers were affected when the M2 motorway, which averages around 90,000 vehicles a day, was closed from Monday, January 20, with works until Friday, January 24.

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Neymar is heading back to Santos.

The versatile forward burst onto the scene with the Brazilian giants where he amassed a staggering 136 goals and 64 assists in 225 appearances.

That led to a big move to Barcelona in 2013 where he registered 105 goals and 76 assists in 186 matches during a four-year stint that included two LaLiga titles, three Copa del Rey trophies and the 2015 Champions League.

Romano claims Neymar is set to undergo a medical with Santos after flying back to Brazil.
