Horse racing tips: ‘Trip’s ideal and we know he wins off this mark’ – Templegate’s Thursday NAP

TEMPLEGATE takes on Thursday’s action confident of smashing the bookies.

Back a horse by clicking their odds below.

CHALK MOUNTAIN (5.48 Kempton, nap)

Stuart Kittow’s five-year-old should be coming here off a win but he was badly hampered when cruising along at Newbury last time. He had to settle for a neck second there and can make amends. This trip is ideal and we know he can win off this mark.

RABY MERE (3.50 Perth, nb)

Has won two of his past three and can score again under champion jockey Sean Bowen. He has improvement to come and relishes this distance.

STELLA HOGAN (2.32 Yarmouth, treble)

Is consistent and was just over a length away at Chelmsford last time. She finished strongly there and looks hard to beat from the same handicap mark.

MAGIC BOX (5.11 Kempton, Lucky 15)

Has gradually improved with every run and looks the type to take a major step forward now handicapping.

Terrifying moment man, 57, stalks wife around home with bow & arrow after telling her ‘you are dying tonight’

TERRIFYING footage shows the moment a 57-year-old man stalked his wife around their home with a bow and arrow.

Stephen Carr picked up the compound bow he had previously used in target archery competitions after telling his wife Lorna “you are dying tonight”.

He also stabbed his wife Lorna with the pair both drinking on the night[/caption]

The keen archer picked up the weapon to shoot metal-tipped arrows at Lorna, at their home in Strensall, North Yorkshire, a court heard.

Carr then stabbed her six times with a kitchen knife while she was on the phone with emergency services, the court was told.

He was jailed for 20 years after unleashing the “terrifying and frenzied” attack using a bow and arrow.

Cameras installed at the couple’s to assist in the care of the defendant’s elderly mother recorded parts of the attack on the night of September 8 last year.

Now, footage released by cops shows Carr stalking his wife around their house with the weapon before he is seen coolly picking up a knife from the kitchen drawers.

Jurors previously heard Carr told her “you are dying tonight” before he pointed the bow at her and fired three arrows in her direction after he had downed a litre of vodka.

The argument was sparked over the “concerns and stresses of caring for the defendant’s mother” who lived with them at the time, prosecutor Angus MacDonald said during the sentence hearing at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday.

But 57-year-old Carr denied intending to kill his wife and claimed he “blacked out”.

However, a jury convicted him of attempted murder following a trial at the same court last month.

Judge Simon Phillips, sentencing, told the defendant: “During the course of the trial, the jury heard, and to some extent saw, clear evidence that you were intent on killing your wife Lorna.

“You anger towards your wife increased that Sunday night. She tried unsuccessfully to calm you down.”

The court was told the bow was a “heavy and powerful compound bow” which shot metal arrows at a speed of 270 feet per second, which “could cause serious injuries and even death” if used against a person.

Mrs Carr managed to dodge the arrow by closing the door, and the arrowhead lodged itself in it “a split second” after she had been in the doorway, the court heard.

Mrs Carr tried to stop the defendant from using the bow again by attempting to cut the strings with a kitchen knife.

“You threatened to ‘go mental’ if she did that,” Judge Phillips told the defendant Carr.

“You had reloaded your bow and pointed it at her and she says: ‘Do you want murder and blood on your hands?’.”

The defendant then pursued Mrs Carr inside the house where she had sought refuge, struck her on the face with the bow, and said “You are dying tonight”, the court heard.

Mrs Carr then made a 999 call from the bedroom where the defendant cornered her and shot three arrows.

The court heard the arrows missed Mrs Carr, but the defendant went on to stab her six times in the back with a kitchen knife whilst she was on the line with a 999 call operator.

She was recorded begging for her life and telling the call operator: “He’s got a bow, he’s got a compound bow… Don’t kill me Steve please. Do not kill me you c***. Please! Think of your mum”, a spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said.

“This was a terrifying, frenzied and sustained attack”, the judge said.

After the stabbing, Carr retreated to the garden shed on his property where police arrested him while Mrs Carr received medical care, the court heard.

She was taken to hospital for treatment to 10 wounds, including six to her upper back, as well as swelling and bruising to her forehead, shoulders and arms.

She was discharged three days later and has since made a full recovery, the court was told.

According to police, Carr sent a WhatsApp message to his wife after the assault in which he said: “I’m glad I didn’t do what I wanted to do. I did say you were pushing me to far (sic). My bag (sic) sorry.”

‘FRENZIED ATTACK’

During the trial, Carr claimed he “blacked out” and does not recall stabbing his wife, adding that he felt she was “controlling him”, a spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said.

His defence lawyer, Gulam Ahmed, told the judge Carr had not displayed abusive or violent behaviour towards his wife prior to the attack, adding: “For a short period Mr Carr certainly lost it, and it is without the background of any abuse, without the background of any violence.

“This was out of character and a one-off.”

The court heard Carr was “heavily intoxicated” throughout the incident which the judge said he took into account as an aggravating factor.

Carr received a sentence of 17 years’ imprisonment with an extended licence of three years, bringing his total custodial sentence to 20 years.

Despite the ordeal, Lorna declined to apply for a restraining order and told the court she wished to resume their relationship, the court heard.

Lorna wrote a letter to the court describing him as a “caring, compassionate man” who helped care for his beloved mum Betty.

She said he had “never been controlling or violent towards her” until the night of the event, when he was a “broken man” and said she has forgiven him for the attack.

Lorna added that she trusted he would never hurt her again, the court heard.

Nissan Micra reboot proves small car isn’t dead… it’s a million miles better than old ones & based around superb rival

Red Nissan Micra electric car driving on a road.

NOT so long ago everyone was predicting the death of the small car.

  • Ford Fiesta.
  • Ford Ka.
  • Vauxhall Adam.
  • Vauxhall Viva.
  • Peugeot 108.
  • Citroen C1.
  • Renault Twingo.
  • Volkswagen Up!

Micra is a reskinned Renault 5 using the same menu of batteries, e-motors, suspension and electronics[/caption]

All popular runabouts sent to the great scrapyard in the sky.

Manufacturers blamed cost, ever- tightening regulations adding even more cost, and the trend for pumped-up crossovers.

Now everything is about to go full circle and I’m here for it.

Renault will unveil an all-new Clio petrol hybrid shortly.

To sit alongside the gorgeous battery-powered 5.

Then the titchy Twingo returns as a £17K EV late next year.

Volkswagen is to update Polo with a mild hybrid petrol engine – so it’ll be around for much longer. Ditto Seat and Ibiza.

Then VW will roll out a family of urban EVs previewed by the ID2 and ID1 concepts.

ID2 will be badged ID Polo by the time it hits showrooms next summer priced from £22k – and ID1 will become Up! in 2027, costing about £17k.

Vauxhall already flogs Corsa in both power types and we’ll see the next one in a month or two.

Fiat has the brilliant 500 and box-fresh Grande Panda and there’s a smaller Panda city car in the pipeline.

We recently tested BYD’s £19k Dolphin Surf.

Lots of small, simple starter cars for everyone.

Now we come to the red car you see here. Nissan Micra.

Another household name rebooted for the electric age.

Basically, Micra is a reskinned Renault 5 – built by Renault at the R5 factory – using the same menu of batteries, e-motors, suspension and electronics.

So it drives like an R5. Feels like an R5. Goes as far as an R5.

Which is fine by me. Because the R5 is a peach.

So your choice is purely down to looks.

Whether you prefer the retro codes of the R5 or the cheery puppy-eyed Micra.

Those Micra lights “wink” at you when you unlock the car.

That thick stripe down the waistline is what Nissan’s London designers call the “ice cream scoop”.

Like dragging a spoon across the surface of untouched ice cream.

Yeah, whatever. It’s a million miles better than the vanilla Micras of old.

Man driving a car.
David Shepherd Photographer shep@Davidshepherdphotographer.com
The Micra drives like an R5, feels like an R5 and goes as far as an R5[/caption]

Other observations. They’ve printed Mount Fuji in the centre console and boot frame, a nod to the car’s Japanese heritage.

But they forgot to replace the French cockerel on the windscreen. Duh.

Like the R5, Micra has a twin-screen dash, Google brain, reversing camera and one simple button to switch off all the beeps and bongs the law now demands.

Unlike the R5, mid-spec Micras have steering wheel paddles to adjust the levels of braking regen.

So it’s actually more fun to drive.

The tech wasn’t ready before R5 hit the road. But it will get it soon.

Nissan has also done another deal with Renault for a city car based on the upcoming Twingo.

Death of the small car? No, mate.

There’s lots of good stuff just around the corner.

KEY FACTS: NISSAN MICRA

  • Price: £23,000
  • Battery: 40kWh
  • Power: 122hp
  • 0-62mph: 9 secs
  • Top speed: 93mph
  • Range: 192 miles

They host podcast The Therapy Crouch, where they get honest about married life and everything in between with their followers and listeners.

In an interview with OK! back in March, Abbey spoke about her husband and their marriage.

Swooning over her life with her hubby, Abbey also insisted she “doesn’t need space” from him.

However, on an episode of their podcast, Abbey jokingly mentioned how they both enjoy their own hobbies, and lived “seperate lives”.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that [having their own hobbies and spending time apart].

“Like, not every day, because we need to do stuff together as well.

“But I think some part of the week, I think that’s a totally healthy relationship.”

Abbey interjected: “It is, because I’ve never been happier.”

DARTS champ Luke Littler plans to become a sporting icon in the US, documents reveal.

The 18-year-old has applied to have his name and nickname The Nuke trademarked in America.

He has filed documents with the US Patent and Trademark Office for protection to sell goods such as clothes, sporting goods, luggage, books, and even food and drink.

He is already a millionaire after shooting to fame at 16 as runner-up in the 2024 World Darts Championship.

He then won the title in January.

His latest move will prevent bootleggers from using his moniker and cashing in on his fame.

One expert told us: “It grants the owner exclusive rights.”

The Warrington-born whiz kid already has similar trademark protection in the UK.

Luke has been in the States in recent days.

He was among the headline attractions at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York last weekend as the world’s top players went Stateside for the US Darts Masters.

However, his campaign ended at the quarter-final stage by his good friend and stablemate Nathan Aspinall, who triumphed 6-4 against the teenager.

Man, 26, who sexually abused & performed sex act next to horses at stables before he was caught on CCTV avoids jail

A MAN who sexually abused and performed a sex act next to horses at stables before he was caught on CCTV has managed to avoid jail.

Corey Coleman, 26, accepted he had an “unhealthy interest” in horses after footage revealed his various disturbing acts on the animals.

Wales’ Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates’ Court heard how Coleman, from Llanharan, regularly volunteered in helping look after the horses at the Ynyscrug livery yard.

But on June 27 last year, the man was found lying in a passageway between the stables with “serious injuries” to his back.

Coleman was hospitalised with spinal fractures and was given a back brace – but was “back at the stables” not long after, RSPCA prosecutor Geraint Richards said.

The owner of the stables, Alex Hill, questioned Coleman as to how he got the injury, to which he said one of the horses attempted to mount him.

Mr Hill then decided to look at the CCTV, which “concerned him enough to look deeper into it,” Mr Richards said.

When Mr Hill checked the footage from Coleman’s stables visits on July 15 and 29, he saw that he had been abusing horses.

Coleman was captured “teasing and arousing” a horse, with the date he was injured showing a similar disturbing incident.

After the yard’s owner called cops, Coleman was then arrested and made an “unsolicited” comment to officers that his actions were “part of the cleaning,” the court heard.

RSPCA prosecutor Mr Richards explained how the stables were “quite busy” and there were often “children in the vicinity” outside.

He added that it was likely the abuse had occurred “for many months” due to the horses’ behaviour during the incidents that “showed they had been conditioned to be used to this sort of attention”.

Daniel Maggs, defending, confessed it was a “very unusual case” and added that Coleman struggled to discuss the heinous incidents because of his “embarrassment”.

He also said his client already endured an “element of instant karma” after his injuries and accepted he had “an unhealthy interest” in stallions.

Coleman had been involved in an equine events organisation but had obviously “destroyed any future career of that nature” and was now receiving counselling.

The 26-year-old pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a bay stallion named Bear and a palomino stallion named Benny by sexually abusing them.

He also pleaded guilty to failing to ensure the welfare of the same stallions and failing to ensure the welfare of a bay mare named Nala who was exposed to the risk of injury from the stallions.

The court heard how there are two dogs and two cats at Coleman’s main place of residency – his girlfriend of nine years’s home – and two dogs at his mum’s where he stays “from time to time”.

Coleman’s solicitor Mr Maggs said it was be “fair to say” his relationship is now “on the rocks” due to the shocking discoveries.

Coleman was also disqualified from owning, keeping or transporting horses, or participating in their keeping for half a decade and ordered to pay costs of £474.

The band formed back in 1975 – and took on the name Saxon in 1978[/caption]

Saxon formed in Barnsley back in 1975 – and adopted their current name three years later.

Lead vocalist Biff Byford is set to undergo emergency surgery, which requires six weeks of recuperation.

As a result of this, a string of summer performances have been cancelled.

The affected dates are listed in full further down.

The band’s management said: “Saxon were so looking forward to performing at all the below Summer festivals and events, but the health and well-being of the band obviously has to come first.

“It goes without saying that all in Saxon are gutted that they will be unable to perform but look forward to hopefully being back on stage in time to play both Trutnoff Open Air Festival in Czech Republic on August 23 and Neuborn Open Air on August 29.

“The band are also very much looking forward to their upcoming tours of both Spain, France and the UK later this year too.”

Continuing, the management relayed that Saxon are “sorry for any inconvenience” and ask for “patience and understanding”.

It means Saxon’s Swedish club shows on July 24, 26 and 27 are cancelled altogether – with fans advised to seek refunds.

However, the band are working with ticket sellers in order to reschedule other affected dates.

Alongside Biff, other Saxon members include Paul Quinn, Nigel Glockler, Nibbs Carter, Douglas Scaratt and Brian Tatler.

During the 1980s, they had eight Top 40 UK albums – which included two UK top 5 albums.

In addition, Saxon enjoyed success overseas spanning Europe, the United States, Canada, South America and Japan, to name a few.

It comes as rock band Murder Capital have also been forced to cancel gigs.

The Murder Capital are an Irish five-piece who released their third album in February of this year.

Saxon's cancelled performances

Jul 12: Leoben Area 53 Festival, Austria
Jul 24: Ekilstuna Lokomotivat, Sweden
Jul 25: Borgholm Öland Rock Festival, Sweden
Jul 26: Linköping Garden, Sweden
Jul 27: Gävle Furuvik, Sweden
Jul 29: Oberhausen Turbinenhalle 2, Germany
Jul 31: Czaplinek Pol’And’Rock Festival, Poland
Aug 01: Wacken Open Air, Germany
Aug 09: Finland Stallörsparken, Ekenäs
Aug 16: Dinkelsbühl Summer Breeze Festival, Germany

Posting on social media, the band said: “With heavy hearts, we have to cancel our tour this autumn due to unforeseen financial challenges and the ongoing travel uncertainties.

“This is a bitter pill to swallow. We hope you know how much we wanted to be out there playing these shows for ye all.”

They continued: “Thank you to all our fans that bought tickets, we appreciate your support and can’t wait to come back as soon as the time is right. Sending you all love in these strange times.

“All our summer shows are on, we look forward to seeing everyone out there.”
