Wrexham stadium expansion update as architects ‘plan to create a real cauldron’ for new 5,500 capacity stand

ARCHITECTS behind Wrexham’s stadium expansion are planning to “create a real cauldron” as work continues on a new 5,500-capacity stand.

Welsh side Wrexham have gone from strength to strength under the ownership of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Wrexham are hoping to achieve promotion to the Championship this season[/caption]

After starting off in the National League, they now sit third in League One and are dreaming of another successive promotion – this time to the Championship.

But as Wrexham climb the rankings, they are also looking to grow their stadium at the same time.

The Racecourse Ground is the world’s oldest international stadium after hosting Wales’ first-ever game in 1877.

And it currently holds 12,000 fans as the club builds a new 5,500 stand for their Kop end.

Once completed, it will replace a temporary stand holding 2,000 supporters and will take the Racecourse Ground’s capacity to 15,000.

Plans are already afoot though to grow the arena into a 55,000 seater behemoth, dwarfing current Premier League stadiums including Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge.

Now, the architects behind Wembley Stadium, Tottenham’s £1billion home and the Las Vegas Sphere have lifted the lid on what the atmosphere will be like once the new Kop stand is in place.

Populous’ global director Declan Sharkey revealed it will “create a real cauldron” at the Racecourse Ground, enabling Wrexham fans to truly show off their support.

But the creation of the stand will also allow the club to easily continue adding and building more room as they continue to make strides.

Sharkey told The Athletic: “I genuinely believe this design would only work in Wrexham.

“When looking at the Kop stand, the plan was to create a real cauldron. We explored acoustic design, our in-house team going into a lot of detail to ensure that the noise will be like no other.

“As a League One stadium, which it is at the moment, the atmosphere is incredible. But what the new stand will do is lift that up a couple of notches again.

“The focus right now is on the Kop stand. But a big part of our design process was considering the rest of the stadium. How it could be expanded or modified in the future.

“All constraints will truly give the Kop stand a unique identity along with the rest of the stadium as we develop it.”

Meet Man Utd target Dorgu who has ‘never been injured in seven years’ and scored with first touch on international debut

PATRICK DORGU could be the answer to Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United conundrum.

Amorim was determined to implement his favoured 3-4-3 formation when he arrived at Old Trafford back in November.

However, it has failed to be as effective as he probably would have anticipated.

Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot were initially Amorim’s preferred wing-backs at the start of his tenure at the club.

But with Amad now used in a more attacking position and Dalot struggling to adapt to his new role, the head coach has been forced to look elsewhere for options.

Amorim set his sights on Lecce left-back Dorgu earlier this month and now looks primed to seal a deal for him.

United have reportedly reached a £29million agreement with the Serie A side for him.

It includes a further £4m in add-ons relating to Champions League qualification and a set number of Premier League appearances.

Should he join United, Dorgu could jump straight into Amorim’s starting line-up.

Compared to Man Utd stars Amad, Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, the 20-year-old has won more duels and more possession this season and has made more tackles, crosses and interceptions.

He also has four goals and assists – a huge improvement on Dalot and Mazraoui’s zero.

And the left-back has attempted 36 shots in total – more than any of his potential future team-mates.

Dorgu’s all-round game appears to be slightly more balanced than that of United’s current defensive players.

He is effective both going forward and tracking back – which is exactly what Amorim has been looking for in recent months.

In another huge boost, he also boasts an impressive fitness record.

Nordsjælland technical director Alexander Riget, who watched the youngster grow up at the club, recently told Sport Witness: “He’s never injured – never.

“He played for Nordsjælland for six or seven years and I can’t remember him having one day where he was injured, which is very abnormal when you are growing. That is also a very good thing.”

It will come as music to Amorim’s ears given the recurring injury issues that have plagued Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw in recent years.

Dorgu’s goalscoring prowess was also evident on his senior international debut for Denmark in September.

He broke the deadlock against Switzerland with his first touch just 42 minutes after coming off the bench.

Should the full-back join United, he will be the first signing of the Amorim era.
