Elderly patients wait on row of trolleys in crowded corridor in scenes that lay bare deep crisis facing NHS

ELDERLY patients wait on a row of trolleys in a crowded corridor in a picture that lays bare the deep crisis facing NHS hospital A&Es.

Around 15 were wheeled there because the department’s bed bays were all full — an increasing problem nationwide, says the Royal College of Nursing.

Carer Samantha Howes, 38, met with the “disturbing” sight at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent, where she had taken her daughter with suspected appendicitis.

The mum of two said: “I’ve never seen anything like it. It makes you emotional.

“A lot of these elderly folk looked fearful and confused. Some were being treated as people walked past. A few had their legs sticking out. Where’s the dignity in that?”

Samantha added: “Only one nurse was looking after 15 or so patients in that corridor and it wasn’t the only one like that.

“There were sick people everywhere. Even the children’s A&E waiting room was full.

“I feel for the nurses. They’re overworked and stressed. But it’s disgusting that people must wait in these conditions.”

East Kent Hospitals University NHS Trust apologised for the delays, blaming “high demand”.

Research shows that patients are more likely to die within a month if they spend more than half a day waiting in A&E.

There were 43,000 12-hour A&E waits a month on average last year compared with 8,272 for the whole of 2019.

More than 13,000 out of 100,000 hospital beds in England are blocked by people fit to go home but who cannot until proper care is arranged.

A Royal College of Nursing poll of 5,000 frontline staff found two-thirds treat patients in non-medical areas every day.

Offices, cupboards and car parks are being used.

Patients are dying in waiting rooms and public areas due to delays.

RCN general secretary Nicola Ranger said: “The scale of this is absolutely the worst it has ever been.”

Analysis found Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust was the worst in England for emergency waits.

Meanwhile, noughties pop icon Roisin Murphy has been as one of the acts who will be performing on June 15.

The Irish singer-songwriter, 51, first gained attention as part of the pop duo Moloko, alongside Mark Brydon.

She is joining the likes of headliner London Grammar as well as Celeste, The Blessed Madonna and Pip Millett, among others.

It comes following Roisin cancelling gigs last year – while sharing a “horrifying” health update.

The singer told fans she was having to rest after doctors discovered a non-cancerous abscess in her breast.

On Instagram, Roisin said in a video: “Just want to say how terribly sorry I am. I’m going to have to cancel a couple of gigs. I’m cancelling All Together Now this weekend in Ireland and a show that’s scheduled for Tuesday in Croatia.

“I’m extremely sorry to anyone who follows me, anyone who is my fan knows how much I love doing what I do, love to perform and love to be there with you.

“This is horrifying for me. Absolutely desperately sorry.”

Continuing, she added: “I have an abscess in my breast.  “It’s not cancer thank God but it’s a very tricky thing and it’s not healing as it should yet.

“I’ve just seen a consultant today in London who has told me I need to get as much rest as possible in the next two to three weeks in the hopes of avoiding an operation.

“So incredibly sorry to have to announce that due to illness I have to cancel my shows in Ireland and Croatia over the weekend and next week. I need time and rest to heal.

“I love you all so, so much, please stay with me. I’ll be back!”

Moloko performed together for a decade, spanning 1994 up until 2004.

After they disbanded, Roisin pursued a solo career beginning with her critically acclaimed solo debut album Ruby Blue.

However, she embarked on an eight year hiatus after the release of her second solo album.

She released her third solo album, Hairless Toys, in 2015 and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

Since then, Roisin has gone to release four more solo albums – most recently being Hit Parade in 2023.

Rachel Reeves backs Man Utd’s plans for new 100,000 seat mega-stadium to help ‘generate growth’

CHANCELLOR Rachel Reeves will set out her goals for growth today — backing the construction of Britain’s biggest football ground.

The Sun can reveal Manchester United’s plans for a 100,000-seater mega-stadium will “generate growth” to the tune of £7billion every year.

Ms Reeves is expected to give the residential, transport and entertainment development at Old Trafford the green light — and back a new runway at Heathrow and possibly Gatwick airport too.

She has warned “low growth is not our destiny but growth will not come without a fight”.

All the decisions risk a major backlash from other parts of Britain desperate for similar investment.

Newcastle United and Aston Villa are also keen for government support for stadium developments and scores of Labour MPs may attempt to block any airport expansions.

But the Chancellor will insist she is “on the side of working people . . . willing to take the right decisions now to change our country’s course for the better”.

In a speech in Oxfordshire, she will say: “Britain’s potential has been held back for too long. We have accepted low expectations, stagnation and the risk of decline. We can do so much better.

“We are at the forefront of some of the most exciting developments in the world like artificial intelligence and life sciences. We have great companies, delivering jobs and investment in Britain.

“And we have fundamental strengths — in our history, our language, and our legal system — to compete in a global economy.”

Ms Reeves will also back a new rail link from Oxford to Cambridge, which will add an estimated £78billion to the economy over the next decade.

PM Sir Keir Starmer yesterday threw down the gauntlet to his ministers yesterday, saying growth must be “hard-wired into all Cabinet decisions”.

Last night, Tory Shadow Business Secretary Andrew Griffiths hit out, saying: “Words are cheap but a growth strategy cannot just be infrastructure projects for the 2030s.”

But, Hughie and Paul were thrown when Pete wouldn’t finalise the deal after he realised the logbook was wrong.

Pete worried the car was stolen and wondered J.J. was aware.

When Pete called the deal off with Hughie, Hughie accused him of a shakedown.

Paul stepped in to keep the deal alive, much to Pete’s annoyance.

Pete then tried to broach the topic of the car’s provenance to an affronted J.J.

Under pressure from J.J., Pete and Paul were left with no choice but to close the sale with Hughie.

Pete completed the sale with Paul’s support, but Pete was left feeling guilty.

And RTE viewers were all left making the same complaint as they took to social media to share their reactions.

Ciara wrote: “Poor Hughie has awful luck.”

Pamela said: “Poor auld Hughie had no joy does he.”

Elsewhere in Carrigstown, Dearbhla and Gar agreed to not let their night together jeopardise their new friendship.

However, Gar expressed his apprehension about Aoife’s visit to Fergal.

Gar feared Fergal would try and intimidate Dearbhla into leaving.

Meanwhile, Fergal worried Gar was planning on moving back to the States with Dearbhla.

CITY DRAMA

Jacinta made Gar realise he was not over Dearbhla.

Dearbhla was conflicted when Gar revealed he still had feelings for her.

In the end, Gar and Dearbhla decided they wanted to be together, for now, despite their expiration date.

Separately, Sash urged Gwen to trust her to deal with Nina.

Later on, Sash told Nikki that Nina was looking for information on Zak.

EXPOSING NINA
