ARSENAL came from behind to defeat Girona and book their place in the Champions League last 16.

Former Tottenham winger Arnaut Danjuma gave the hosts a 28th minute lead by slotting the ball beyond the bizarrely onrushing Neto.

Ethan Nwaneri then scored a brilliant bending effort before half-time to complete the turnaround.

Girona veteran Cristhian Stuani thought he’d levelled on 77 minutes, only for his goal to cruelly be disallowed following a VAR check.

DROGHEDA UNITED have signed defender George Cooper on a season-long loan from Mansfield Town.

Cooper, 22, has made just two league appearances for the Stags but also played 52 times in National League North during two loan spells for Kettering Town.

He had joined Kiddersminster Harriers on loan in September but that was cut short by a shoulder injury.

Drogheda boss Kevin Doherty said: “George is an excellent player and meets the profile of what we look for in our defenders.

“He is a big, mobile, strong and athletic defender, and from his first session with us we can see he is vocal and commanding in defence.

“I’ve watched George for a long time and he has really impressed me every time I have seen him. 

“He really wanted to join and he has a hunger to play and that’s what we were looking for. I’m delighted to get him in.”

Elsewhere, Bohemians boss Alan Reynolds has hailed the quality of loan signing Kian Best.

Best, 19, has joined Bohs until the summer, when his Preston North End contract ends.

The left-back made 12 Championship appearances and won five England under-19 caps, scoring on his debut against Romania, last season.

He featured in their opening game of this campaign too but, after Ryan Lowe stepped down after that game, his only games under his successor Paul Heckingbottom came in the Carabao Cup.

But Reynolds believes he will prove a valuable addition. He said: “I am delighted to get Kian on board.

“He comes with a really good pedigree having played a significant number of games at a very high level in the English Championship with Preston.

“He is exactly the kind of quality that will strengthen our squad. He is a really exciting talent, he’s young and is clearly hungry to push on.

“Left-back is a position we wanted to strengthen. We have taken our time to find the right fit, as we are with other positions.

And the Royal super-supporter watched on with his head in his hands as what seemed at first straightforward night for his heroes suddenly got complicated.

Morgan Rogers blitzed Celtic by bagging his first two Champions League goals ever – inside the first five minutes.

The midfielder tucked home Jacob Ramsey’s pull-back in the third minute.

He then made it 2-0 after keeper Kasper Schmeichel’s clearance was blocked.

Rogers thumped home into the top-corner from 18 yards, albeit via deflection.

But despite Villa having dominated, Celtic pulled one back in the 36th minute.

Greg Taylor raked in a low cross that Villa skipper John McGinn deflected kindly for Adam Idah to neatly volley in.

And just two minutes later the Republic of Ireland forward did it again.

This time a sweet Celtic move opened up the chance for Reo Hatate to slip the ball across for Idah to nip in ahead of keeper Emiliano Martinez and clip the ball in.

But Villa regained momentum after the break.

And Ollie Watkins grabbed his maiden Champions League goal on the hour to restore both their lead and place in the eight automatic qualification spots

Villa sped away quickly, McGinn releasing Ramsey for a cut-back steered home by Watkins.

The England hitman then couldn’t believe it as he fluffed a simple opportunity to make it 4-2.

Villa had gone into the home clash certain of at least a play-off spot.

And they knew victory over the Scottish champs would give them a great chance of a top-eight finish.

Meanwhile, Celtic began the night only one point below Villa.

But that small deficit actually meant a huge difference.

They needed victory to give them hope of a place in the leading eight.

But even then they would still have to cross their fingers and hope many other results went their way.

NETO had a nightmare Arsenal debut and has Ethan Nwaneri to thank for sparing his blushes.

The goalkeeper was nervous from the start and at fault for the opening goal after he was caught in no man’s land.

Jorginho was able to show his calmness, however, as he converted from the spot to level the game for the Gunners.

Ethan Nwaneri then stepped up with a wonderful goal before the end of the first half to put Arsenal ahead and into the last 16.

Raheem Sterling was then denied from the spot late on.

Partey struggled with the winger for much of the game which gave the hosts an edge.

The defender put in a decent shift at the back and was able to keep Abel Ruiz quiet for much of the match.

Like Kiwior, Gabriel was fairly solid against Girona and dealt with most of the danger from the hosts.

Thought he scored the opener but was a good foot offside.

Continued to be positive up the wing and helped the Gunners up the pitch.

Mikel Merino – 6

Merino was fine against Girona. It was not a performance that will grab headlines but did what he needed to do in midfield.

It’s been a while, but the Italian was back on the scoresheet after converting from the spot in the 38th minute.

The midfielder was composed on the ball and helped recycle the ball and control possession.

It was a quiet night for the Gunners captain as he helped the team maintain the ball but lacked that creative spark.

Raheem Sterling – 4

Struggled to make a big impact in the first half and was the weakest of all of the Gunners’ frontline.

To make matters worse, he was booked for diving in the 70th minute.

And just as he though it couldn’t get even worse, he missed a penalty late on.

He wrapped a curling effort into the top corner before half-time on his first Champions League start.

His goal saw him become the second youngest English goalscorer in the history of thre Champions League.

Added some energy down the left-hand side after replacing Partey at half-time.

Got involved in the attack but struggled to find a clear scoring chance,

Came on in the final stages to help solidify the defence for the Gunners and put in some dangerous corners.
