But fans have been left stunned to realise that Stephen’s wife also made a secret cameo in the show – and it is not her first time popping up in his shows.
51-year-old Stephen has been married to partner Hannah Walters for 17 years and they’ve appeared in a total of 13 films and TV shows together, largely without anybody noticing.
Whilst Stephen is usually in the hot seat in the leading role, Hannah usually enjoyed a smaller part or a one-episode cameo in his projects.
Netflix hit Adolescence was no different with Hannah cropping up in episode two of the show.
In a blink and you’ll miss it moment, she took on the role of Mrs Bailey, a teacher who could be seen reprimanding pupil Jade after they hit another pupil.
Also this year, Hannah appeared in another of Stephen’s shows, A Thousand Blows on Disney+.
She appeared as part of the ensemble cast as a female gang member with Stephen appearing in a leading role as boxer, Sugar Goodson.
The married couple first appeared together in the This is England franchise when she played the role of Trudy in the show.
Other roles they’ve appeared in together include the BBC drama Time and the hit movie, Boiling Point.
Following the success of Adolescence, Netflix have already revealed they’re hopes for a second series of the four-parter following its runaway success.
The show explores the story of the fictional Miller family, whose lives are turned upside down when their 13-year-old-son Jamie is arrested on suspicion of murder having been radicalised online.
It has reached 24.3million views in its first four days and been hailed the most important show of the year.
A TV source said: “Execs are thrilled by the results and acclaim for Adolescence.
“It’s seen as a format that can run and run, at least to a second series if not further, as it could take in a different teen issue each series.
“The topic has resonated with viewers because it taps into parents biggest fear and there’s plenty of scope for more in the same vein.
“Stylistically, the one-take creative approach could become the hallmark of the series. It’s one of the aspects which has got everyone talking.”
