Solo Leveling and Demon Slayer are definitely two of the most popular anime that fans absolutely love and support across all platforms. This gets proven as Solo Leveling finally overthrows Demon Slayer, with the most reviews on Crunchyroll.

The number one position is still within the grasp of One Piece, but Solo Leveling is not far behind. Demon Slayer used to be in the second position, but now it has been pushed to the 3rd rank.
Nevertheless, their popularity is raising questions amongst fans who understand the hype but not the appeal. Just because they are famous, does that automatically mean they have good stories, or maybe other factors are at play that masterfully hide their flaws?
A simple story with flashy execution

The common criticism that both Solo Leveling and Demon Slayer get from their critics is their extremely simple storyline. On the one hand, we have a brother trying to find a cure for his demon sister while fighting against more demons with the help of a bunch of fighters, sharing a similar goal in Demon Slayer.
On the other hand, we have Jinwoo, a hunter, who, after almost dying in one of his dungeon hunting raids, gains the ability to level up as a hunter in Solo Leveling. Apart from these basic elements, there is hardly any complex theme within these shows that can give you a mind-bending experience.
Solo Leveling runs almost entirely on the fact that it has an overpowered protagonist who is winning battles with a plot armor so strong that nothing can defeat him. While Demon Slayer mostly just thrives on simple emotions of friendship and familial bonds.
While these aspects are definitely not bad, they become redundant when used for an innumerable amount of time. If we compare these to highly complex anime like Steins;Gate or Neon Genesis Evangelion, one starts to question the value of popularity.
Why do Solo Leveling and Demon Slayer still work?

As anime is a visual medium, the animation quality becomes the most powerful and essential aspect. Even with a subpar storyline, an anime with exceptional animation can definitely garner a huge fanbase.
Here, the studios of Solo Leveling and Demon Slayer, A-1 Pictures, and Ufotable, respectively, deliver some of the finest animations ever. Solo Leveling has intense fight sequences and smooth transitions. Demon Slayer is on a whole other level with its stunning visuals and realistic animation that promises a jaw-dropping experience.
On top of that, other aspects like a quick pace, good background score, and some really talented voice acting also help heighten the overall viewing experience. But one thing is certainly true, without the production quality, neither of the series amounts to much.

Yes, we cannot entirely deny that the simplicity of these shows does help the popularity a lot. However, we should also keep in mind that just because they are famous and loved by a majority of people doesn’t make them the greatest anime of all time. There are many other shows that deserve recognition as well.
