Minister requested for Seanad grilling on Tusla review into Kyran Durnin case as ‘still questions to be answered’

THE Children’s Minister has been asked to appear before the Seanad over the disappearance and murder of Kyran Durnin.

The young lad from Drogheda, Co Louth, was last seen alive in June 2022, when aged six.

Norma Foley is being requested to give an update on the Tusla review into the case, none of which has been made public so far.

The  update was made by Drogheda Senator Alison Comyn almost three years to the day since the boy was last publicly seen alive at a school in Dundalk.

Despite a series of searches of various houses in Co Louth, so far no body has been found and although two people were arrested over the murder, no one has been charged.

Tusla, the Child and Family Protection Agency, must carry out a review any time a child on its books or in its care, dies to see what lessons can be learned.

Senator Comyn said: “It is three years since Kyran’s last confirmed sighting at the end of June 2022.

“There are still  questions to be answered about who  knew what, given that Tusla had engaged with the family in the months before Kyran disappeared.

“I have requested that Minister Norma Foley come to the Seanad to discuss what further information she has received since her most recent statement last year.”

Back in April, cops investigating the youngster’s murder said it could be months before there are any developments in the case.

Detectives are going through a mountain of new information and tip-offs from the public as they seek to find his body.

Hundreds of hours of CCTV footage are also being carefully examined.

‘COVER-UP WON’T LAST FOREVER’

A Garda source said: “The investigation is ongoing and it will be months before we see any more developments.

“There are people out there who know what happened to this little fella, we just need them to come forward confidentially and tell us the truth. This cover up won’t last forever.”

Four homes have been searched so far with no significant finds made.

Kyran was reported missing along with his mother, Dayla, last August.

‘NO PROOF OF LIFE’

But after Gardai established his mother had been living in the UK, they upgraded the case to a murder inquiry after establishing there was “no proof of life” of Kyran.

Detectives later identified how the last public sighting of the child was in June 2022 when he was at school.

So far, two suspects have been arrested and released without charge, including father-of-two Anthony Maguire, who took his own life days after being freed.
