With Enzo Maresca’s side already 2-1 down, it left the Blues with a mountain to climb – a task they ultimately failed as they lost 3-1.

And after the game, former Chelsea midfielder Obi Mikel did not hold back in his assessment of the 24-year-old’s actions.

While shaking his head he said: “Unbelievable. Stupid stupid stupid mistake. I don’t know what was going through his head.

“Your team needs you and he does that. He did the same at Newcastle… you can’t keep making these mistakes…

“I don’t care what his frustration is (Delap starting). This is a massive football club and it’s about competition.

“If you’re angry or p***ed off, then you have to embrace it. We need competition.”
