Rangers takeover tycoon Andrew Cavenagh quizzed on 49ers deal after watching epic Europa League win over Fenerbahce

WOULD-BE Rangers owner Andrew Cavenagh watched Rangers face Fenerbahce for the second time in a week.

And coyly insisted his presence was only to “support the club”.

Then he was quizzed outside the ground[/caption]

The health insurance businessman is part of the group who have agreed a deal in principle to buy into the Ibrox club.

Cavenagh was spotted leaving Ibrox with Gretar Steinsson – the technical director of 49ers Enterprises who are also working on the same deal.

The pair watched Barry Ferguson‘s side lose 2-0 on the night but hold out through extra-time to win on penalties against Jose Mourinho‘s Turkish side.

Jack Butland saved two penalties and another was missed as Gers set up another Europa League quarter final – and will head to Final venue Bilbao and face Athletic Club in the last eight.

Both Cavenagh and Steinsson were also in attendance with Rangers current delegation of directors at last week’s 3-1 win at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul.

But as he left Ibrox after the late finish, the former goalkeeper batted away questions on the deal that everyone is talking about.

Quizzed by Sky Sports’ Luke Shanley outside the ground on Edmiston Drive he refused to give much away.

The Sky Sports reporter asked: “Mr Cavenagh, how close are you to taking over at Rangers?”

But Cavenagh politely sidestepped the mic – and the question – replying: “Great match tonight, just here to support the club.”

Smiling as he made his way to a waiting taxi, he was asked: “What is it about this club that attracts you?”

But Cavenagh cut the questions short and nodded: “Have a wonderful night.”

Gers’ shoot-out win sets up a quarter final with Athletic Club Bilbao next month.

Earlier this week we revealed Rangers’ proposed takeover was set for a May completion as talks progressed.

We also revealed Cavenagh played football at college before moving into business.

His former coach Wayne McKinney reckoned he could have gone pro rather than into the corporate world.

Cavenagh is executive chairman of insurance giants ParetoHealth – which manages over $8 BILLION in assets.

He started his career in commercial banking and worked at several publicly traded insurance companies.
