Frieren is definitely a unique mage who has an undying love for magic. She understands the core philosophy of spells and treats each and every one of them as something special, even if it is not.
However, as one of the strongest mages ever seen in her time, one would think Frieren would rely mostly on strong spells. But that is not the case; Frieren prefers simple magic that has very little to do with combat.
But, perhaps, this innate understanding and respect towards all spells is what makes Frieren so formidable. Now that she has her own apprentice, Frieren imparts the same kind of knowledge to Fern as well.
The strength of simplicity in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
The reason why Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is completely different from any other anime is because its root is in simplicity. Most of the characters do not rely on flashy moves or sudden power-ups to get things done, and there is always a realistic philosophy behind their strength.
Similarly, Frieren also believes in basic magic and its effectiveness. For her, rather than coming up with complex spells, collecting random mundane magic is far more important. Plus, it is not just a gag within the series that Frieren looks for weird spells.
Firstly, she does it because she genuinely thinks they are important and she will need them someday. Plus, it also impressed Himmel, and since then, she kept her hobby going.
We also see Frieren go to great lengths just to get her hands on spells that amount to nothing. She literally challenges the legendary Solar Dragon to get a spell on being able to see through clothes.
Not only that, but we also see her collect pretty much meaningless spells, like being able to create shaved ice at an alarmingly slow rate. However, she also has the explosive Zoltraak spell that has now been modified into a completely new thing.
Frieren’s simplicity makes her unbeatable
At a glance, it is very easy for Frieren to deceive anyone, especially demons, into believing she is weak. She does that by masking her mana and also by using spells that might seem weak but are not.
One of the best examples is her use of the Zoltraak spell, which was created by demons but was used extensively by Frieren and then later perfected by humans. Now, Zoltraak has evolved to become one of the most basic offensive magic that every mage knows. Plus, it is also something that can specifically pierce through demons, making it adequate against its own creators.

Frieren’s idea of sustainability in a battle also makes her the most formidable. The one simple move that she has perfected to the core and knows how to use extensively is more lethal than any out-of-the-box destructive magic.
On top of that, her experience and approach towards a spell automatically increase the potential of the most basic magic. Frieren’s true strength, thus, comes from mastery of her craft and not from needless complexity.
