“Kubo’s uncensored mind was too much for Shonen Jump”: One Piece Is Dark but Bleach Fans Will Never Know How Unhinged Kubo Really Is Because of the Anime

One of the most liked aspects of major anime and manga series like One Piece or Naruto is the darkness within the story. These narratives use bleak and sinful elements that make the plot even more thrilling and hype up the emotions within the characters and the fans. And while there are many manga creators who are proficient in it, none of them does it like Tite Kubo.

Kubo is known for his magnum opus, Bleach is a part of the Big Three and has a global fanbase. The series majorly focuses on adventure and the supernatural genre, but there are some moments that are quite dark, especially for the shonen fanbase. Thus, these dark and evil moments had to be toned down within the anime series for the audience.

One such moment that had to be filtered was at the beginning of the Bleach storyline and involves one of the most important characters of the series, Orihime Inoue. Kubo made the scene so dark that the Bleach anime adaptation had to literally remove it because it could have caused big issues for the series in terms of censorship.

The darkness of Tite Kubo in Bleach

As fans know, the story of Bleach is established in a universe where the world of Shinigami is not only visible but the center of the plot. Thus, dark moments regarding death and destruction are quite common within the series. However, Kubo has taken it to the next level by introducing some uncomfortable aspects that make the overall narrative even darker.

From execution to assault, the range of these dark elements is quite varied, and they reflect in different scenarios throughout the entire Bleach storyline. Ideally, these elements should have made the series uncomfortable and unwatchable for the fans, but the way Tite Kubo writes them and embeds them within the story makes all the difference.

He compliments them by adding more emotional depth and making it more thrilling for Bleach fans. This way, while they feel the density of the darkness within the scene, they also cannot look away from it because of the enchanting storyline that is being portrayed within the series.

Tite Kubo’s darkness was hidden because of the anime

One of the darkest moments in Bleach manga’s history was in chapter 41 when Orihime, Tatsuki, and Chizuru are battling against Numb Chandelier, one of the Hollows who was introduced in the Agent of the Shinigami arc. This Hollow had the power to control others by firing seeds as projectiles and embedding them within his opponents.

When he attacked Orihime and Chizuru, Tatsuki jumped in to save the two but couldn’t do much against the huge army that Numb Chandelier had built.

Eventually, she herself gets attacked by his seeds, and then Numb Chandelier plans a gruesome and vile way for her death through the hands of her classmates that would shiver anyone to their core.

Although he remains unsuccessful as Orihime unlocks her power, it was indeed one of the evilest moments in the history of Bleach, and it reflected Kubo’s unhinged mindset. In fact, it was so dark that the scene had to be completely removed from the Bleach anime series in order to maintain censorship.

Bleach is available to watch on Hulu.
