Ever since Jessica Simpson announced her divorce from Eric Johnson, many have wondered, “What the heck happened?” While they’re both kept quiet about the reason behind the split, Simpson’s new song tells a story that fans are convinced is about her and Johnson’s breakup.
In case you missed it, on March 7, she released a song called “Leave.” Simpson shared a video of behind-the-scenes glimpses ahead of the song’s release on Instagram. She posted it with the caption reading, “Evolvin’ as an artist means embracin’ the hard truths. “Leave” is my most vulnerable track yet. Now, let’s talk about the lyrics because they got everyone talking. She started the song by singing, “What we had was magic / Now you made it tragic / Giving her what you gave to me / Now the well that you drank from’s empty.”
She then sang the lyrics, “Did you do to her what you did to me? / Was she on her knees? / Oh, she’s everything but me.” And she sang lines like “Oh, I, I’d rather die / Then let you be inside me with her on your mind,” and “So hold on / I’m letting you go.”
So, as you can imagine, fans are thinking that this song is an allegation about what may have happened between her and Johnson. Neither has publicly commented about this, but everyone is putting on their investigator hats!
For those who don’t know, Simpson and Johnson met back in May 2010, dating soon after. They got engaged a few months later, and finally wed on July 2014 at San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, Calif. The Open Book author and Johnson later welcomed three children together named Maxwell Drew, born on May 1, 2012, Ace Knute, born on June 30, 2013, and Birdie Mae, born on March 19, 2019.
Then, as we said, Simpson confirmed her split from Johnson on Jan. 14, 2025 after 10 years of marriage.
“Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” she revealed in a statement to People. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family,” she said.
