Sky Q customers finally receive popular app with loads of free shows – and extra TV channels are coming soon too

A LONG-AWAITED free streaming app has finally landed on Sky Q boxes across the UK.

Satellite customers have been waiting for the platform to arrive for years, having been on Sky Glass and Sky Stream for a while now.

Now more Brits can access Channel 5’s full on-demand service My5.

The launch means apps for all four of the UK’s main broadcasters are instantly available on Sky Q.

My5 is not only home to hit shows from Channel 5, but also the company’s sister brands 5STAR, 5USA, 5SELECT and 5ACTION.

Sky customers could already find Channel 5 content on-demand but this latest move will open viewers up to the firm’s full slate of programming.

And there will be even more content on the app very soon too.

Channel 5 is preparing a major revamp of its streaming offering in March across all platforms.

Not only will there be a new name, 5, and new look, but there’s expected to be more binge-worthy box sets and live streamed channels.

Channel 5 claims that My5 grew at its fastest ever rate in 2024, with shock documentary My Wife, My Abuser its number one most watched single title.

Original dramas including All Creatures Great and Small, Blindspot, The Teacher and Ellis have also helped My5 grow.

“Our expanded distribution across Sky Q marks an important milestone in My5’s ongoing growth, enabling us to reach more homes than ever before,” Kiaran Saunders, VP Distribution at Paramount UK, recently said.

“With the upcoming refresh to 5, we’re thrilled to deliver an even more engaging, streamlined and richer viewing experience for all of our audiences.”

What will the new 5 app be like?

Channel 5 is owned by US media giant Paramount, which also owns free streaming service Pluto TV.

And I believe Pluto TV offers some hints of what we can expect from the new 5 app.

Given Paramount’s extensive family of brands, there’s a lot of good quality archive content to use.

My5 already does this with some shows like Geordie Shore but not others like Catfish, 16 and Pregnant, South Park and many more.

So I’m sure we can expect more of this.

And let’s not forget Paramount’s extensive back catalogue of movies, some of which may well make an appearance – though the lion’s share will no doubt remain paid on Paramount+.
