Batman: The Animated Series remains a modern animated classic, arguably one of the best in the genre. Writer-producer Paul Dini helped develop the series and also served as one of its writers. However, Dini originally got a start in his career working with Star Wars legend George Lucas.

During an interview, Dini reflected on the experience of working on Lucas’s epic space opera saga before going on to create one of the greatest animated shows ever made. As a result, it is safe to say that we wouldn’t have had Batman: The Animated Series without Dini’s work on Star Wars, and here is everything you need to know about it.
DCAU Legend Paul Dini recalled the experience of working with Star Wars creator George Lucas
Paul Dini is primarily known for his work on the DC animated shows and movies, starting with 1992’s Batman: The Animated Series, co-created by Bruce Timm. However, before his legendary run on the series, Dini also worked on the Star Wars franchise.

Earlier in his career, Dini worked with George Lucas on the animated shows Star Wars: Droids and Ewoks. During an interview with Starburst Magazine, Dini opened up about the experience of working on the epic space opera saga.
I was the ultimate fanboy, so I was dazzled by it all. I thought, ‘Oh man, this is really great.’ Working at Skywalker Ranch back then, it was all new. He had just wrapped up doing Star Wars and the last of the Indiana Jones movies that he was going to make for a while.
Dini made the above statement, recalling the then-state of the franchise with Lucas preparing to take some downtime.
The writer-producer revealed that the animated shows were the only work related to the franchise that was being developed at the time. Dini admitted that Lucas’s involvement with the animated projects of the time was limited. However, Dini later returned to the saga to work on The Clone Wars animated series, with Lucas having more creative input on the final product.
Paul Dini revealed the real reason Batman: The Animated Series remains a classic

After working on the Star Wars animated shorts, Dini worked on several animated projects, but none reached the heights of the success seen by Batman: The Animated Series, which laid the foundation for the DCAU. The series remains popular even today, and Dini explained why.
It really was not just a show for kids. It was a show that took quite a lot of people by surprise.
Dini made the above comment, revealing the show’s appeal extended beyond its target audience, resulting in its classic status even today.
Furthermore, Dini felt that the series had an edge over other cartoons of its time because of its cinematic qualities, including its treatment of its background music, writing, and action sequences. Therefore, the series has remained fresh and appealing to viewers despite premiering almost three decades ago.
Batman: The Animated Series is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
