For many years, Dragon Ball Super was infamous for its inconsistent animation quality. There were some instances in Dragon Ball Z (chins episode) compared to Super, the difference is massive. From stiff character models to bizarrely constructed scenes, Dragon Ball Super became the brunt of jokes among the fans.

Super had really good animation in the beginning, but as it went on and on, the technology improved, but maybe in order to stay consistent, Toei Animation stuck to the familiar animation style.
The reputation of having Super as their main work in the franchise and all the mistakes associated with it is not a glowing review of Toei’s capabilities, so when they got the chance to do a standalone, they proved themselves.
Toei proved why it is an anime hegemon
Toei Animation might have become lax and made a few mistakes with Super, but there is no denying that the animation quality in Dragon Ball Super was exceptional, the design got better as it went on.

But by sticking to the original way of animation, it felt a bit lacking, the fans could not understand where the abilities of Toei lay. What was the extent of the animation that they could do with the newest technology? This left many fans feeling sour as the quality will probably stay this way until the day Super ends.

It felt like a certain anime with a little detective (Case Closed). However, Dragon Ball DAIMA changed the game completely; it gave Toei the opportunity to offer some of the best visuals in the current anime industry, completely showing off their prowess in animation.
There is a reason that Toei is a hegemon in anime production: it produced Dragon Ball and all of One Piece.
How DAIMA walked out of Super’s shadow
Instead of falling into the same pitfalls as Super, with DAIMA, Toei took its time and focused on the designs, backgrounds, and scenes. They embraced a vibrant and colorful palette, making its world feel alive and fresh in a way never seen before in the franchise.

The Demon Realm, despite its creepy name, was filled with beautiful environments that broke away from the monotone settings in Dragon Ball Super. It is usually the fights that are given prominence and not the setting, but DAIMA did a great job and animated each part exceptionally well.

Even the ‘worst episode’ of the giant island had a lot to offer. There were many creatures (all giant-sized) that were well-animated, and the forest setting was vibrant and attractive. From an artistic point of view, DAIMA was a complete win that let Toei walk out of Super’s shadow.
Dragon Ball DAIMA was a much-needed breath of fresh air for the franchise. By turning into a repetitive power scaling series, Dragon Ball was going to lose its uniqueness and be called ‘outdated.’ Thus, not only improving its animation quality but also the fight choreography and sense of adventure (from the original Dragon Ball) made it stand out from Super.
Dragon Ball DAIMA is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
